Mooshroom

The Mooshroom is what happens when Minecraft looks at a perfectly normal cow and says, “What if we grew mushrooms on it?” The result is one of the rarest passive mobs in the game — a fungal bovine that only spawns in the mushroom fields biome, a place so remote and bizarre that most players never even find it without coordinates. Mooshrooms are essentially cows with a mycological upgrade, and they come with a few tricks that make the journey to find them absolutely worth it.

These mushroom-covered cows are walking renewable food sources. You can milk them with a bucket for regular milk, or use a bowl to get mushroom stew — an infinite food supply from a single mob. The red variant is the one you will encounter naturally, but strike one with lightning and you get the rare brown mooshroom, which can produce suspicious stew with whatever flower you feed it. That is not a joke. You literally hand a cow a flower, milk it with a bowl, and get potion-effect stew. Minecraft is a normal game.

Beyond the novelty factor, mooshrooms are genuinely one of the most useful passive mobs in survival. They provide everything a regular cow does — leather, beef, milk, breeding — plus the stew mechanics on top. And the mushroom fields biome where they spawn has a secret weapon of its own: hostile mobs cannot spawn there. It is one of the safest places in the entire game, which makes building a mooshroom ranch there one of the smartest long-term survival plays you can make.

Appearance

The mooshroom uses the same model as a regular cow — same blocky body, same rectangular head, same stubby legs. The difference is that it is covered in mushrooms growing directly out of its back and head, which is either adorable or deeply unsettling depending on your feelings about parasitic fungi.

The red mooshroom has a deep red body with white patches and red mushrooms sprouting from its back. It looks like a cow that wandered into a mushroom field and just decided to stay forever. The texture pattern mirrors a regular cow’s markings, but swapped to red instead of brown.

The brown mooshroom has a brownish-grey body with slightly darker patches and brown mushrooms on its back. It looks significantly more muted than its red counterpart — less “magic mushroom cow,” more “cow that has been through some things.” Brown mooshrooms only appear when a red mooshroom is struck by lightning, so that weathered look is honestly appropriate.

Baby mooshrooms are smaller versions of the adult with proportionally larger heads, just like baby cows. They have the same mushroom growths as adults but scaled down. Baby mooshrooms inherit the variant color of their parents — two red mooshrooms produce a red baby, and a red bred with a brown has a 50/50 chance of either color.

Behavior & AI

  • General Behavior: Mooshrooms behave identically to regular cows. They wander aimlessly, avoid cliffs and water, and make the same ambient mooing sounds. They are not exactly the brightest mobs in the game, but they are not trying to kill you, so that counts for something.
  • Wheat Following: Mooshrooms follow players holding wheat within a 10-block radius. This is how you lead them out of the mushroom fields biome and into your base — slowly, painfully, across oceans if necessary. Bring a lead.
  • Idle Behavior: When not following a player or panicking, mooshrooms wander randomly, occasionally looking around. They graze on mycelium in the same way cows graze on grass, though this is purely cosmetic and does not affect the block beneath them.
  • Panic: When damaged, mooshrooms sprint away from the attacker for a few seconds. They do not fight back under any circumstances. They are pacifists with mushrooms on their heads — what did you expect?
  • Despawning: Mooshrooms do not despawn naturally. Once they spawn or are bred, they persist in the world until killed. This makes every mooshroom you find a permanent resource.
  • Water/Lava: Mooshrooms avoid water and lava when pathfinding. They can swim if pushed into water but will try to exit immediately. They are not fire-resistant — lava kills them just as quickly as any other cow.
  • Daylight: Mooshrooms have no special daylight behavior. They are active during both day and night cycles.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Mushroom Stew Milking: Using a bowl on an adult mooshroom fills the bowl with mushroom stew (restores 6 hunger points and 7.2 saturation). This works infinitely with no cooldown. One mooshroom is an unlimited food source as long as you have empty bowls.
  • Regular Milk: Using a bucket on a mooshroom gives regular milk, identical to milking a cow. Milk removes all status effects when consumed.
  • Suspicious Stew (Brown Mooshroom Only): Feeding a small flower to a brown mooshroom and then milking it with a bowl produces suspicious stew. The stew’s effect depends on the flower used. This works once per flower — you need to feed another flower for the next bowl. The mooshroom remembers the last flower it was fed until milked.
  • Shearing: Using shears on an adult mooshroom drops 5 mushrooms (matching the variant color — red or brown) and permanently transforms the mooshroom into a regular cow. This cannot be reversed. The cow is just a cow now. It has lost its identity and its mushrooms, and there is nothing you can do about it.
  • Lightning Conversion: When a red mooshroom is struck by lightning (natural or from a channeling trident during a thunderstorm), it converts into a brown mooshroom. A brown mooshroom struck by lightning converts back to red. The mooshroom is not harmed by the lightning strike that triggers the conversion.
  • No Attacks: Mooshrooms deal 0 damage and have no attack AI. They are completely passive under all circumstances.

Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth

  • Food / Tempt Item: Wheat. Mooshrooms follow and can be bred with wheat, identical to regular cows.
  • Taming: Mooshrooms cannot be tamed. They can only be led with wheat or a lead.
  • Breeding: Feed wheat to two adult mooshrooms to breed them. The 5-minute breeding cooldown applies. Two red mooshrooms produce a red baby. Two brown mooshrooms produce a brown baby. One red and one brown parent gives a 50/50 chance of either variant.
  • Baby Growth: Baby mooshrooms take 20 minutes (one full Minecraft day) to grow into adults. Feeding them wheat accelerates growth by 10% of the remaining time per wheat consumed.
  • Leash Behavior: Mooshrooms can be attached to leads. This is strongly recommended for transporting them, because leading a passive mob across hundreds of blocks with wheat alone is an exercise in suffering.
  • No Mounting/Saddle/Armor/Chest: Mooshrooms cannot be ridden, saddled, armored, or given chests. They are cows with mushrooms, not horses with mushrooms.

Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms

Red Mooshroom

  • Appearance: Red body with white patches, red mushrooms growing from its back and head.
  • Spawning: The only variant that spawns naturally in mushroom fields biomes.
  • Stew Production: Produces regular mushroom stew when milked with a bowl. Cannot produce suspicious stew.
  • Conversion: Converts to brown mooshroom when struck by lightning.

Brown Mooshroom

  • Appearance: Brownish-grey body with darker patches, brown mushrooms growing from its back and head.
  • Spawning: Does not spawn naturally. Only created when a red mooshroom is struck by lightning.
  • Suspicious Stew Production: Can be fed any small flower, then milked with a bowl to produce suspicious stew with a potion effect matching the flower. The available effects include:
    • Dandelion — Saturation (0.35 seconds)
    • Blue Orchid — Saturation (0.35 seconds)
    • Allium — Fire Resistance (4 seconds)
    • Azure Bluet — Blindness (8 seconds)
    • Red Tulip — Weakness (9 seconds)
    • Orange Tulip — Weakness (9 seconds)
    • White Tulip — Weakness (9 seconds)
    • Pink Tulip — Weakness (9 seconds)
    • Oxeye Daisy — Regeneration (8 seconds)
    • Cornflower — Jump Boost (6 seconds)
    • Lily of the Valley — Poison (12 seconds)
    • Wither Rose — Wither (8 seconds)
    • Torchflower — Night Vision (5 seconds)
    • Poppy — Night Vision (5 seconds)
  • Conversion: Converts back to red mooshroom when struck by lightning again.
  • Rarity: Extremely rare due to requiring a lightning strike on an already-rare mob. Using a channeling trident during a thunderstorm is the most reliable way to create one.

Baby Mooshroom (Calf)

  • Appearance: Smaller version of the adult with a proportionally larger head. Retains the mushroom growths of its parent variant.
  • Behavior: Follows adult mooshrooms. Cannot be milked, sheared, or bred until fully grown.
  • Growth Time: 20 minutes to reach adulthood. Accelerated by feeding wheat (10% reduction per wheat).

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Surface of Mushroom Fields biome
Biomes Mushroom Fields only
Y-Level Range Surface level (typically Y 63–100+, depends on terrain generation)
Light Level 9 or higher
Required Block Mycelium (spawns on mycelium blocks only)
Group Size Java: 4–8 per herd
Bedrock: 2–3 per herd
Weight 8 (only passive mob that spawns in mushroom fields)
Edition Differences Java spawns larger herds (4–8) compared to Bedrock (2–3). Both editions only spawn red mooshrooms naturally — brown mooshrooms require lightning conversion.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Wolves: Wolves do not attack mooshrooms. Mooshrooms are treated as cows by the game’s mob interaction systems, and wolves do not target cows.
  • Mushroom Fields Safety: The mushroom fields biome has a unique property — no hostile mobs can naturally spawn there (above ground or underground). This makes it the safest biome in the game and the ideal location for a mooshroom ranch.
  • Iron Golems: Iron golems do not interact with mooshrooms in any special way. They protect villagers, not cows — even fancy mushroom cows.
  • Boats & Minecarts: Mooshrooms can be placed in boats and minecarts for transport. A boat is usually the easiest way to move them across water if you found a mushroom island offshore.
  • Lightning Rod Interaction: Placing a lightning rod near mooshrooms during a thunderstorm can direct lightning strikes to convert them. This is more reliable than waiting for natural strikes and pairs well with channeling tridents for targeted conversion.
  • Cats & Ocelots: No special interaction. Mooshrooms ignore cats and ocelots entirely.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Raw Beef 1–3 Guaranteed Roll Drops as steak if killed while on fire. Looting adds 1 per level (max 1–6 with Looting III).
Leather 0–2 Guaranteed Roll Looting adds 1 per level (max 0–5 with Looting III).
Mushrooms (Shearing) 5 Guaranteed Drops 5 mushrooms matching the variant color (red or brown). Permanently converts the mooshroom into a regular cow.
Mushroom Stew (Milking) 1 Guaranteed (infinite) Use a bowl on any adult mooshroom. No cooldown, infinite uses. Restores 6 hunger and 7.2 saturation.
Suspicious Stew (Milking) 1 Guaranteed (per flower fed) Brown mooshroom only. Feed a small flower first, then milk with a bowl. Effect depends on flower type. One stew per flower fed.
Milk 1 bucket Guaranteed (infinite) Use a bucket on any adult mooshroom. Same as regular cow milking.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Infinite Food Source: A single mooshroom with a stack of bowls gives you unlimited mushroom stew. Each bowl of stew restores 6 hunger and 7.2 saturation, making it one of the best renewable food sources in the game. The only downside is that stew does not stack, so you need to milk on demand rather than carrying stockpiles.
  • Suspicious Stew Farm: A brown mooshroom paired with a flower farm lets you produce suspicious stew with useful effects on demand. Oxeye daisies for regeneration and cornflowers for jump boost are particularly valuable. Dandelions and blue orchids give saturation, which is effectively bonus hunger restoration.
  • Safe Base Location: Building your base in a mushroom fields biome means zero hostile mob spawns on the surface and in caves within the biome. Pair this with a mooshroom breeding pen and you have the safest, most self-sufficient survival setup possible.
  • Transport Considerations: Getting mooshrooms to your base is the hardest part if you do not live in or near a mushroom fields biome. Boats across oceans work but are slow. Nether portals can shorten the distance significantly — build a portal near the mushroom fields and one near your base, then lead mooshrooms through. They can enter nether portals.
  • Breeding Farm: A simple fenced enclosure with wheat is all you need. Breed mooshrooms for leather, beef, XP, and unlimited stew. Because they do not despawn, you can build up a herd of any size. Keep at least two alive at all times — if you lose your last pair, getting replacements means another trip to a mushroom island.
  • Mushroom Farming: Shearing mooshrooms produces 5 mushrooms per shear. However, this permanently converts them to cows, so it is a one-time harvest per mob. If you need mushrooms, it is more sustainable to farm them from huge mushrooms or find them in dark areas. Do not shear your breeding stock.

Commands & NBT

Here are the most common commands for summoning and working with mooshrooms:

/summon minecraft:mooshroom ~ ~ ~

Summons a red mooshroom at your position. Red is the default variant.

/summon minecraft:mooshroom ~ ~ ~ {Type:"brown"}

Summons a brown mooshroom (Java Edition). The Type tag accepts “red” or “brown”.

/summon minecraft:mooshroom ~ ~ ~ {Age:-24000}

Summons a baby mooshroom (Java Edition). The Age tag is in ticks — negative values indicate time remaining until adulthood. -24000 ticks equals 20 minutes.

/summon minecraft:mooshroom ~ ~ ~ {Type:"brown",Age:-24000}

Summons a brown baby mooshroom (Java Edition). Tags can be combined in the NBT compound.

Notable NBT keys for mooshrooms:

  • Type — String: “red” or “brown”. Determines the mooshroom variant and its mushroom type. Default is “red”.
  • Age — Integer: Negative values = baby (ticks until growth). 0 or positive = adult. Set to -24000 for a freshly spawned baby.
  • ForcedAge — Integer: Used when growth is accelerated by feeding wheat. Tracks the forced growth timer.
  • InLove — Integer: Ticks remaining in love mode after being fed wheat. Set to 600 to trigger breeding readiness.
  • EffectId — Integer (Java): The numeric ID of the suspicious stew effect stored in a brown mooshroom after being fed a flower. Only present on brown mooshrooms that have been fed.
  • EffectDuration — Integer (Java): Duration in ticks of the stored suspicious stew effect.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Type Tags (Java): #minecraft:dismounts_underwater, #minecraft:can_breathe_under_water (mooshrooms are NOT in this tag — they can drown).
  • Relevant Gamerules: doMobSpawning controls natural spawning. doMobLoot controls drops on death. mobGriefing does not affect mooshrooms (they do not modify blocks).
  • Loot Table Path: minecraft:entities/mooshroom — can be overridden in datapacks to customize drops.
  • Spawn Rules (Bedrock): Defined in behavior packs under spawn_rules/mooshroom.json. Can be modified to allow spawning in other biomes.
  • Shearing Loot: The mushrooms dropped from shearing are handled by the shearing interaction, not the death loot table. Datapack customization of shearing drops requires modifying the shearing mechanic itself.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Difficulty Impact: Difficulty does not meaningfully affect mooshrooms since they are passive and deal no damage. Their health (20 HP) remains the same across all difficulty levels. The only indirect impact is that hostile mobs do not spawn in mushroom fields regardless of difficulty.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Spawn Group Size: Java spawns herds of 4–8 mooshrooms. Bedrock spawns 2–3 per herd. This makes mooshroom populations noticeably smaller on Bedrock worlds.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — NBT/Commands: Java uses NBT tags like {Type:"brown"} for variant control. Bedrock uses component groups and event triggers in behavior packs — there is no direct equivalent of Java’s NBT Type tag in Bedrock commands. On Bedrock, use /summon mooshroom ~ ~ ~ minecraft:spawn_brown to summon brown variants.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Suspicious Stew Effects: Effect durations from suspicious stew may vary slightly between editions. Always verify durations in your specific version.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Entity ID: Java uses minecraft:mooshroom. Bedrock also uses minecraft:mooshroom — one of the rare cases where the entity ID matches exactly across editions.

Sounds & Audio

  • entity.cow.ambient — Idle mooing sound. Mooshrooms share all their sound events with regular cows.
  • entity.cow.hurt — Played when the mooshroom takes damage.
  • entity.cow.death — Played when the mooshroom is killed.
  • entity.cow.milk — Played when milked with a bucket. Also plays when milked with a bowl for stew.
  • entity.mooshroom.convert — Played when a mooshroom is sheared and converts into a regular cow.
  • entity.mooshroom.eat — Played when a brown mooshroom is fed a flower (Java Edition).
  • entity.mooshroom.suspicious_milk — Played when suspicious stew is milked from a brown mooshroom (Java Edition).
  • entity.sheep.shear — The shearing sound effect is shared with sheep. Even mushroom removal sounds like a haircut.

History & Major Changes

  • Beta 1.9 Pre-release (Java): Mooshrooms added to the game alongside the mushroom fields biome. Only the red variant existed at this point.
  • Java 1.0.0: Official release included mooshrooms as part of the base game.
  • Bedrock Edition 0.9.0: Mooshrooms added to Bedrock Edition (then Pocket Edition).
  • Java 1.14 (Village & Pillage): Brown mooshroom variant added. Suspicious stew milking mechanic introduced for brown mooshrooms. Lightning conversion between red and brown variants added.
  • Bedrock 1.10.0: Brown mooshroom variant and suspicious stew milking added to Bedrock, aligning features with Java Edition.
  • Java 1.15: Baby mooshrooms now inherit their variant color based on parent combination (50/50 for mixed parents).
  • Java 1.20.5: Suspicious stew effect storage updated to use the new effect data component system internally, though player-facing behavior remains the same.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Shearing Baby Mooshrooms: You cannot shear baby mooshrooms. The game only allows shearing on adults, which makes sense because converting a baby into a cow calf would be mechanically identical anyway.
  • Lightning in Boats: Mooshrooms in boats can still be struck by lightning and will convert variants. The boat does not protect them from electrical fungal transformation.
  • Stew Does Not Stack: Mushroom stew and suspicious stew both have a max stack size of 1. This is the mooshroom’s one major drawback as a food source — you cannot carry a stack of 64 stews. You carry bowls and milk on demand.
  • Flower Memory: A brown mooshroom remembers the last flower it was fed, even across chunk unloading and reloading. The flower data persists in the entity’s NBT until it is milked for suspicious stew.
  • Mycelium Spreading: Despite being associated with the mushroom fields biome, mooshrooms do not spread mycelium or cause any fungal growth. They are carriers, not vectors. The mushrooms on their back are purely decorative from a mechanics standpoint.

Advancements/Achievements

  • A Balanced Diet (Java): Eating mushroom stew from a mooshroom counts toward this advancement, which requires eating every food item in the game. Suspicious stew also counts and is tracked separately from regular mushroom stew.
  • A Furious Cocktail (Java): Some suspicious stew effects can contribute to this advancement, which requires having all potion effects applied at the same time.
  • Two by Two (Java): Breeding two mooshrooms together counts toward this advancement, which requires breeding every animal pair.
  • The Parrots and the Bats (Java): Breeding mooshrooms contributes to this advancement as part of the general animal breeding category.
  • Husbandry (Java): Feeding wheat to a mooshroom triggers this root advancement for the Husbandry tab.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Name Origin: “Mooshroom” is a portmanteau of “moo” (the sound a cow makes) and “mushroom.” It is exactly the kind of name you would expect from a game where you can punch trees with your bare hands.
  • Minecraft Dungeons: Mooshrooms appear in Minecraft Dungeons as a cosmetic pet that follows the player. They do not produce stew in Dungeons, which honestly feels like a missed opportunity.
  • Merchandise: Mooshrooms are featured in official Minecraft merchandise including plush toys, LEGO sets (the Mushroom Island set), and figures. The red mooshroom is one of the more recognizable Minecraft mob designs.
  • One of the Rarest Natural Mobs: Because mushroom fields biomes are exceedingly rare (they only generate as islands in deep ocean), mooshrooms are among the least-encountered mobs in natural survival gameplay. Many players complete the game without ever seeing one.
  • Community Nicknames: Players commonly call them “shroom cows,” “mushroom cows,” or just “mooshrooms.” The brown variant is sometimes called the “sad mooshroom” due to its more muted color palette.
  • Inspired Fan Builds: The mushroom fields biome and its mooshrooms have inspired a large number of fan builds, including massive mushroom houses, mooshroom statues, and entire servers themed around the biome.
