Strider

The strider is the only mob in Minecraft that genuinely enjoys standing in lava. While every other creature in the game treats lava like the liquid death trap it is, striders treat it like a warm bath. They waddle across lava lakes in the Nether with the casual confidence of someone who has never once considered the concept of burning alive. They are passive, rideable, and the single most practical way to cross the Nether’s massive lava oceans without building a 400-block bridge out of cobblestone and regret.

Striders were added in the Nether Update (1.16) and immediately solved a problem players had been complaining about since the Nether existed: getting across lava without dying. Saddle one up, grab a warped fungus on a stick, and suddenly you are cruising across a lava lake like it is a Sunday drive. They are one of the few Nether mobs that will not try to kill you, which already puts them in the top tier of Nether residents.

Outside of lava, striders are a different story. They shiver, turn purple, and move at a pace that makes snails look ambitious. They are built for lava and lava alone. Take them out of it and they let you know — constantly — that they would very much like to go back.

Appearance

Striders look like someone designed a creature specifically to survive in lava and then gave up halfway through making it look normal. They have a wide, flat body that sits low on two stubby legs — legs that dangle and sway beneath them while they walk on lava like it is solid ground. Their face is a broad, slightly dopey expression with two small dark eyes and a wide mouth that makes them look perpetually confused about something.

When a strider is in lava or on a warm block, its skin is a deep reddish-orange — it looks content, healthy, and right at home. The moment it steps out of lava and onto solid ground or gets rained on, it turns a dark purplish-blue color and starts shivering visibly. This is not just a cosmetic change. The strider is genuinely cold and unhappy, and its reduced movement speed reflects that.

Baby striders are smaller versions of the adult with the same proportions. They can often be found riding on the backs of adult striders, which is one of the few genuinely cute things that happens in the Nether. Sometimes a zombified piglin will be riding a strider instead, holding a warped fungus on a stick. That is less cute and more concerning.

Behavior & AI

  • Lava Walking: Striders walk on the surface of lava as if it were solid ground. They do not sink, swim, or take damage from lava. This is their entire purpose in life.
  • Idle Movement: When not being ridden or lured, striders wander aimlessly across lava lakes. They gravitate toward lava and will path toward it if they are on land.
  • Cold State: When outside of lava (on land, in water, or in rain), striders turn purple, shiver, and move significantly slower. They take damage from water and rain — yes, rain can kill a strider. They are the opposite of every other mob in that regard.
  • Following: Striders follow players holding warped fungus or a warped fungus on a stick within 16 blocks. This works on both lava and land.
  • Baby Riding: Baby striders frequently spawn riding on the backs of adult striders. Up to three baby striders can stack on one adult. They dismount when the adult enters a portal or when they grow up.
  • Zombified Piglin Jockey: A zombified piglin can spawn riding a strider, holding a warped fungus on a stick. This effectively “steers” the strider, making it move with purpose rather than wandering randomly.
  • Pathfinding: Striders pathfind toward lava sources. If placed on land, they will attempt to reach the nearest lava. On lava, they wander randomly unless lured or ridden.
  • Persistence: Striders that have been interacted with (saddled, named, ridden) will not despawn. Wild striders follow standard despawn rules.
  • Water Damage: Striders take 1 damage (half a heart) every tick they are in contact with water or rain. This adds up fast — a strider in water will die in about one second.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Lava Immunity: Striders are completely immune to lava and fire damage. They walk on lava surfaces without sinking.
  • No Attack: Striders have no attack of any kind. They are fully passive and will never fight back, even when hit.
  • Rideable: When saddled, striders can be ridden by players. The player controls direction using a warped fungus on a stick, similar to how pigs are steered with a carrot on a stick.
  • Boost: Using the warped fungus on a stick (right-click/use while riding) consumes 1 durability and gives the strider a temporary speed boost. The boost lasts approximately 7 seconds and significantly increases movement speed on lava.
  • Fire Resistance (Inherent): Striders are immune to all fire-related damage, including lava, fire, magma blocks, and campfire damage.
  • Water Vulnerability: Contact with water or rain inflicts rapid damage (1 damage per tick, 20 damage per second). This is the fastest environmental kill in the game for a mob with 20 health.

Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth

  • Food: Warped fungus. Striders follow players holding warped fungus and can be bred with it.
  • Taming: Striders cannot be tamed in the traditional sense. You cannot form a permanent bond like with wolves or cats. However, you can saddle them and steer them with a warped fungus on a stick, which is functionally close enough.
  • Saddling: Use a saddle on a strider to make it rideable. The saddle cannot be retrieved by interacting with the strider — you need to kill it or use a dispenser trick. In creative mode, you can just pick it up.
  • Breeding: Feed warped fungus to two adult striders to breed them. They produce a baby strider and the player earns 1-7 XP. The breeding cooldown is 5 minutes, same as most mobs.
  • Baby Growth: Baby striders take 20 minutes (one full Minecraft day) to grow into adults. Feeding them warped fungus accelerates growth by 10% of the remaining time per feeding.
  • Leashing: Striders can be leashed with a lead. This is useful for pulling them out of lava and onto land, though they will shiver and hate every second of it.

Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms

Zombified Piglin Jockey

  • Spawn Rate: Approximately 1 in 30 striders spawns with a zombified piglin rider (Java). In Bedrock, the rate is similar but not identical.
  • Behavior: The zombified piglin holds a warped fungus on a stick and actively steers the strider. The strider moves with direction and purpose instead of wandering.
  • Combat: If you attack the zombified piglin, it dismounts and aggros normally. The strider remains passive. If you attack the strider, the piglin also becomes aggressive.
  • Drops: Killing the zombified piglin rider gives its normal drops. The strider drops its own loot separately.

Baby Strider Rider

  • Spawn Rate: Baby striders have a chance to spawn riding adult striders. Multiple babies can stack on one adult.
  • Behavior: The baby rides passively and dismounts when it grows up or when the adult enters a nether portal.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location The Nether — on the surface of lava
Biomes All Nether biomes (Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, Crimson Forest, Warped Forest, Basalt Deltas)
Y-Level Range Any Y-level where lava lakes exist (typically Y=31 for the main lava sea)
Light Level Any light level
Required Block Must spawn on lava (the block beneath the spawn position must be lava)
Group Size Java: 2-4
Bedrock: 2-4
Weight 60 (common — striders are one of the most frequently spawning Nether mobs)
Edition Differences Spawning mechanics are largely identical between Java and Bedrock. Both editions require lava as the spawn surface. Striders spawn in all Nether biomes in both editions.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Lava: Striders walk on lava as if it were solid ground. They are the only mob in the game with this ability. They do not sink, and lava does not damage them in any way.
  • Water & Rain: Water and rain deal 1 damage per tick to striders. A strider in water will die in roughly 1 second. Rain in the Nether is not naturally possible, but if a strider is brought to the Overworld, rain will kill it quickly.
  • Zombified Piglins: Zombified piglins can spawn riding striders as jockeys. The piglin steers the strider using a warped fungus on a stick. Attacking either mob aggros the piglin, but not the strider.
  • Baby Striders: Baby striders ride on adult striders. This is purely a spawning mechanic — players cannot place baby striders on adults manually.
  • Boats & Minecarts: Striders can ride in boats and minecarts. Putting a saddled strider in a boat on lava does not work the way you might hope — the boat burns. Do not try this.
  • Nether Portals: Striders can walk through nether portals, transporting them to the Overworld. Once there, they will shiver constantly, take rain damage, and generally have a terrible time. They can still be ridden on land, just slowly.
  • Magma Blocks: Striders do not take damage from magma blocks and treat them as normal walkable terrain.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
String 2-5 Guaranteed Roll Drops 1 extra per level of Looting (max 2-8 with Looting III).
Saddle 1 100% (if saddled) Only drops if the strider was wearing a saddle. This is the only way to recover the saddle — you cannot remove it by interacting with the strider.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Lava Lake Transportation: The primary use for striders is crossing lava lakes in the Nether. Saddle a strider, equip a warped fungus on a stick, and ride it across. This is dramatically faster and safer than bridging, especially across the massive lava ocean at Y=31.
  • Warped Fungus on a Stick: Craft one by combining a fishing rod and a warped fungus. The stick has 100 durability. Each boost consumes 1 durability, and steering does not consume durability — only the speed boost does.
  • String Farm: Striders drop 2-5 string on death, making them a potential string source in the Nether. However, spiders and cave spiders in the Overworld are far more efficient string farms. Striders are not worth farming specifically for string unless you are doing a Nether-only challenge.
  • Nether Highway Mounts: For players who prefer not to build ice-boat highways, saddled striders on lava can serve as a Nether transportation method. They are slower than ice boats but require zero infrastructure.
  • Breeding for XP: Breeding striders with warped fungus gives 1-7 XP per baby. This is not a competitive XP source, but it works in a pinch if you are in the Nether with no other options.
  • Advancement Completion: Riding a strider with a warped fungus on a stick over a lava lake in the Nether awards the “This Boat Has Legs” advancement in Java Edition.

Commands & NBT

/summon minecraft:strider ~ ~ ~ {Saddle:1b}

Summons a strider that is already saddled and ready to ride.

/summon minecraft:strider ~ ~ ~ {Age:-24000}

Summons a baby strider. The negative Age value determines how many ticks until it grows up (-24000 = 20 minutes).

/summon minecraft:strider ~ ~ ~ {Passengers:[{id:"minecraft:zombified_piglin",HandItems:[{id:"minecraft:warped_fungus_on_a_stick",Count:1b},{}],IsBaby:0b}]}

Summons a strider with a zombified piglin jockey holding a warped fungus on a stick.

  • Saddle: 1b if the strider has a saddle equipped, 0b if not.
  • Age: Negative values indicate a baby. -24000 is a newborn; 0 is an adult.
  • Passengers: List of entities riding the strider. Can include baby striders or zombified piglins.
  • NoAI: Set to 1b to freeze the strider in place. Useful for decorative builds in the Nether.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • #minecraft:freeze_immune_entity_types: Striders are immune to powder snow freezing despite being cold-sensitive to water and rain. Go figure.
  • mobGriefing: Does not affect striders — they do not interact with blocks destructively.
  • Loot Table Path: minecraft:entities/strider
  • Spawn Egg ID: minecraft:strider_spawn_egg

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Difficulty Scaling: Striders do not deal damage and are not affected by difficulty settings. Their health, speed, and behavior are identical across Easy, Normal, and Hard.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Riding Speed: Ridden strider speeds are functionally similar between editions, though exact values can vary slightly due to engine differences.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Jockey Spawn Rate: The zombified piglin jockey spawn rate is approximately 1 in 30 in Java. Bedrock uses a similar but not perfectly identical probability.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Baby Growth: Growth acceleration with warped fungus works the same in both editions — each feeding reduces remaining growth time by 10%.
  • Bedrock — Saddle Interaction: In Bedrock, you can equip a saddle to a strider by using it while crouching. Java does not require crouching.

Sounds & Audio

  • Ambient: entity.strider.ambient — a low, gurgling chirp. Striders make these sounds regularly while wandering on lava.
  • Happy: entity.strider.happy — plays when the strider is in lava or on a warm surface. Slightly more upbeat than the standard ambient sound.
  • Retreat: entity.strider.retreat — plays when the strider enters a cold state (leaving lava, touching water/rain). This is distinctly different from the ambient sound and sounds appropriately distressed.
  • Hurt: entity.strider.hurt
  • Death: entity.strider.death
  • Eat: entity.strider.eat — plays when fed warped fungus.
  • Saddle: entity.strider.saddle — the standard saddling sound, shared with other rideable mobs.
  • Step (Lava): entity.strider.step_lava — a unique squelchy stepping sound specific to walking on lava.
  • Step: entity.strider.step — standard footstep sound when walking on solid ground.

History & Major Changes

  • 20w13a (Java Snapshot): Striders added to Java Edition for the first time as part of the Nether Update development cycle.
  • 20w14a: Striders now drop string instead of nothing. Breeding behavior added.
  • 20w15a: Striders now take damage from water.
  • 20w19a: Baby striders can now be found riding adult striders naturally.
  • Java Edition 1.16: Official release of striders as part of the Nether Update.
  • Bedrock Edition 1.16.0: Striders added to Bedrock Edition alongside other Nether Update content.
  • Java Edition 1.16.2: Zombified piglins can now spawn riding baby striders in certain configurations. Minor pathfinding fixes.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Saddle Recovery: Once you put a saddle on a strider, you cannot take it back without killing the strider. This catches a lot of players off guard, especially since saddles are not craftable. Plan your saddle usage accordingly.
  • Overworld Transport: Striders can be brought to the Overworld through nether portals. They function on land but are extremely slow and will take damage from rain. If you live in a desert biome where it never rains, a strider is technically a very slow, very sad land mount.
  • Lava Walking Physics: Striders treat lava as a solid surface, but if you dismount while riding a strider on lava, you — the player — will fall into the lava. Do not dismount on lava unless you have fire resistance. This has killed more players than anyone will admit.
  • Stacking Babies: Multiple baby striders can spawn stacked on a single adult, sometimes creating absurd towers of baby striders. This has no gameplay impact but is consistently amusing.

Advancements / Achievements

  • This Boat Has Legs (Java): Ride a strider with a warped fungus on a stick. Specifically, you must boost the strider while riding it. This is part of the “Nether” advancement tab.
  • The Parrots and the Bats (Java): Breed two animals — striders count toward this advancement when bred with warped fungus.
  • Two by Two (Java): Breed all breedable animal types. Striders are one of the required mobs for this advancement.
  • Feels Like Home (Bedrock Achievement): Ride a strider with a warped fungus on a stick across a lava lake in the Overworld. Yes, the Overworld — you need to create a lava lake in the Overworld and ride the strider across it. This is oddly specific and moderately annoying to set up.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Design Inspiration: Striders were designed as a solution to one of the most common player complaints about the Nether — the difficulty of crossing lava lakes. They are a rare example of Mojang adding a mob specifically to solve a gameplay problem rather than just adding atmosphere.
  • Name Origin: The name “strider” comes from their ability to stride across lava. Not the most creative name, but it tells you exactly what they do.
  • Community Reception: Striders were immediately popular when announced, largely because players had been asking for a way to traverse lava safely since the Nether was first added. They are widely considered one of the best additions in the Nether Update.
  • Shivering Animation: The cold/shivering state was one of the first things players noticed and memed. A strider on land looks so visibly miserable that players genuinely feel bad about taking them out of lava.
  • Minecraft Dungeons: Striders do not appear in Minecraft Dungeons as of the most recent content updates.
