The pig is one of the original passive mobs in Minecraft, and honestly, it might be the most underappreciated animal in the entire game. It wanders around plains and forests looking like a pink rectangular lunchbox on legs, minding its own business, occasionally oinking at nothing in particular. Most players sprint right past pigs on their way to find diamonds or fight the Ender Dragon, and that is a mistake — especially in the early game when food is the difference between life and a very embarrassing death screen.

Pigs are one of the simplest mobs to farm, breed, and cook for food. A cooked porkchop restores 8 hunger points and 12.8 saturation, making it one of the best food sources in the game tied with cooked beef. You do not need any special taming mechanic, rare items, or complex setups. Just find two pigs, hand them a carrot, and wait twenty seconds. Congratulations — you now have a self-sustaining food supply that requires less effort than most things in this game.

And then there is the saddle. You can ride a pig. Is it practical? Not really. Is it fast? Absolutely not. Will you do it anyway because steering a pig off a cliff with a carrot on a stick is one of the funniest things in the game? Every single time. Pigs also have a hidden talent that most players discover by accident — if lightning strikes a pig, it transforms into a zombified piglin. So yes, even the humble pig has a dark side.

Appearance

The pig is a small, pink, rectangular mob with a flat snout, two dark eyes on the sides of its head, and four stubby legs. It is one of the most immediately recognizable mobs in the game — a pink box with a face, basically. The entire model is made up of simple cuboid shapes, and the skin texture is a uniform light pink with a slightly darker pink on the snout.

Baby pigs are scaled-down versions of the adult with a proportionally larger head, following the standard baby mob template. They are noticeably smaller — roughly half the dimensions of an adult — and somehow even more ridiculous-looking. When a saddle is placed on a pig, it appears visually strapped across the pig’s back and cannot be removed without killing the pig. So choose wisely, or don’t — saddles are not exactly rare once you start fishing or raiding dungeons.

Pigs have a small walking animation that wobbles their legs back and forth. When idle, they occasionally look around and oink. There is no visual difference between a pig that spawned naturally and one that was bred — they all look exactly the same.

Behavior & AI

  • Passive Disposition: Pigs never attack the player or any other mob, regardless of what you do to them. Hit a pig and it just runs away for a few seconds. No grudges, no revenge. Pigs are the pacifists of the Minecraft animal kingdom.
  • Wandering: Pigs wander aimlessly within their spawn area, walking a few blocks in random directions before stopping. They avoid cliffs and ledges that would cause fall damage and generally stay on grass or dirt surfaces.
  • Food Temptation: Pigs follow any player holding a carrot, potato, or beetroot within a 6-block radius. They path directly toward the player and will follow for as long as the item is held. This is the primary way to lure pigs into pens or breeding areas.
  • Panic Behavior: When damaged, pigs sprint away in a random direction for a few seconds at increased speed. They do not call other pigs for help and the panic is short-lived.
  • Despawning: Pigs do not despawn naturally once they have spawned. They are persistent mobs. If you build a pig pen, those pigs will stay there until they die or you unload the chunk.
  • Water: Pigs can swim and will float on the surface of water. They do not actively seek out or avoid water, but they will not drown — they bob at the surface.
  • Pathfinding: Pigs can navigate around obstacles, climb single-block heights, and walk through open doors. They cannot open doors themselves. Their pathfinding is functional but basic — do not expect them to navigate a maze.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Rideable: Pigs can be ridden by placing a saddle on them with right-click. Once saddled, right-clicking the pig again mounts the player. The pig is steered using a carrot on a stick — the pig moves in whatever direction the player faces while holding it. Without the carrot on a stick, the pig wanders wherever it pleases, which is never where you want it to go.
  • Carrot on a Stick Boost: Right-clicking while riding a pig and holding a carrot on a stick gives a speed boost lasting approximately 40 ticks (2 seconds). This consumes 7 durability from the carrot on a stick (which has 25 total durability). The boosted speed is roughly 5.2 blocks/second.
  • Lightning Conversion: If a pig is struck by lightning (natural or from a channeling trident during a thunderstorm), it instantly transforms into a zombified piglin. This works on both adult and baby pigs. The zombified piglin spawns with a golden sword. The saddle is lost in the conversion.
  • No Attacks: Pigs have no attack capability. They deal 0 damage. They inflict no status effects. They are food that walks.
  • Fall Damage Advancement: Riding a pig off a ledge and having it take fall damage greater than 5 blocks triggers the “When Pigs Fly” advancement (Java) or achievement (Bedrock). This is one of the most specific and deliberately inconvenient advancements in the game.

Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth

  • Breeding Food: Pigs breed when two adults are fed any of the following items: carrots, potatoes, or beetroots. Each parent must be fed one item to enter love mode.
  • Love Mode: After being fed, pigs enter love mode for 30 seconds, indicated by heart particles. Two pigs in love mode within range of each other will path toward one another and produce a baby pig. There is a 5-minute cooldown before the same pig can breed again.
  • Baby Growth: Baby pigs take 20 minutes (one full in-game day) to grow into adults. This can be accelerated by feeding the baby pig any of the breeding foods — each item fed reduces the remaining growth time by 10%.
  • Taming: Pigs cannot be tamed. They can only be led with food or a lead. There is no loyalty mechanic — a pig follows a carrot, not a person.
  • Saddle: A saddle can be placed on any adult pig by right-clicking. The saddle cannot be retrieved by right-clicking again — it is only recoverable by killing the pig. This is one of those “are you sure?” moments the game does not warn you about.
  • Lead: Pigs can be attached to a lead and tied to a fence post. This is the most reliable way to transport them if you do not have their preferred food on hand.

Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms

Baby Zombie Pig Jockey

  • Description: In both Java and Bedrock Edition, baby zombies (and baby zombie villagers, baby husks, and baby drowned) can spawn riding a pig. This is known as a pig jockey. The pig itself is still passive, but the baby zombie on top is fully hostile and attacks the player normally.
  • Spawn Rate: Extremely rare. Baby zombies have a small chance to attempt to mount a nearby rideable mob when they spawn, and pigs are one of the eligible mounts.
  • Behavior: The baby zombie controls the pig’s movement and steers it toward the player. The pig moves at normal walking speed. The baby zombie attacks with its usual melee damage. Killing the pig dismounts the zombie; killing the zombie leaves the pig alive and wandering.

Zombified Piglin Conversion

  • Trigger: A pig struck by lightning (natural or channeling trident) converts into a zombified piglin instantly.
  • Details: The pig is removed and a zombified piglin spawns in its place. The new mob spawns with a golden sword and follows all standard zombified piglin behavior (neutral until provoked, group aggro). Any saddle on the pig is lost. Baby pigs convert into baby zombified piglins.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Overworld surface
Biomes Plains, Sunflower Plains, Forest, Birch Forest, Old Growth Birch Forest, Taiga, Old Growth Spruce Taiga, Old Growth Pine Taiga, Snowy Plains, Snowy Taiga, Windswept Hills, Windswept Gravelly Hills, Windswept Forest, Meadow, Cherry Grove, Savanna, Savanna Plateau, Windswept Savanna, Jungle, Sparse Jungle, Bamboo Jungle, Swamp, Mangrove Swamp
Y-Level Range Surface level — spawns on the highest valid block at any Y-level where grass blocks exist.
Light Level 7+ (Java Edition)
7+ (Bedrock Edition)
Required Block Grass block with at least 2 blocks of air above.
Group Size Java: 4
Bedrock: 1–3
Weight 10 (standard passive mob weight — shares spawn pool with cows, sheep, and chickens).
Edition Differences Bedrock spawns pigs in smaller groups (1–3) compared to Java (groups of 4). Bedrock also allows pigs to spawn in some additional biome variants. In both editions, 5% of pig spawns are babies.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Wolves: Wolves (wild and tamed) do not attack pigs by default. However, tamed wolves will attack a pig if the player hits the pig first. Wolves do not hunt pigs on their own — pigs are not prey animals in Minecraft’s mob hierarchy.
  • Foxes: Foxes do not target pigs.
  • Zombies & Hostile Mobs: Most hostile mobs ignore pigs entirely. Pigs can be caught in explosions or crossfire, but they are never specifically targeted by hostile mobs (except baby zombies attempting to mount them for jockeys).
  • Boats & Minecarts: Pigs can be pushed into boats and minecarts. A pig in a boat or minecart does not despawn and can be transported over long distances. A saddled pig in a boat is a particularly absurd sight, but it works.
  • Fire & Lava: If a pig dies while on fire (from lava, fire, or a flame-enchanted weapon), it drops cooked porkchops instead of raw porkchops. This is a legitimate cooking method if you are feeling creative — or desperate.
  • Lightning: As covered above, lightning converts a pig into a zombified piglin. This can happen to pigs in pens during thunderstorms, so keep that in mind if your pig farm is outdoors and you enjoy unexpected zombified piglin invasions.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Raw Porkchop 1–3 Guaranteed Roll Drops 1 extra per level of Looting (max 1–6 with Looting III). If the pig dies while on fire, drops cooked porkchops instead.
Cooked Porkchop 1–3 Guaranteed Roll (fire death only) Only drops if the pig is killed while on fire. Same Looting scaling as raw porkchops. Saves you a furnace and some fuel.
Saddle 1 Guaranteed (if saddled) Only drops if a saddle was placed on the pig before death. This is the only way to recover a pig’s saddle.
Experience Orbs 1–3 Guaranteed (player/wolf kill) Only drops when killed by a player or a tamed wolf. Environmental deaths (fall damage, lava, suffocation) yield no XP.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Food Source: Cooked porkchops are one of the best food items in the game — 8 hunger points and 12.8 saturation per chop. This ties with steak as the best non-golden food. A simple pig farm is one of the most efficient early-game food solutions you can build.
  • Basic Farm Design: Fence in a 5×5 or larger area, lure at least two pigs inside with carrots, breed them, and kill the extras once they grow up. Feed babies to accelerate growth. It is not glamorous, but it works and it scales easily.
  • Automatic Farms: More advanced pig farms use water streams to push pigs into a killing area, or lava blade designs where pigs are bred and the adults are killed by a lava source that auto-cooks the porkchops. Lava blade farms save fuel since the pigs die while burning, dropping cooked porkchops directly.
  • Carrot on a Stick Transport: Riding a saddled pig with a carrot on a stick is a niche but functional early-game transport method before you find a horse. It is slow, the carrot on a stick has limited durability, and you look ridiculous — but it technically works.
  • Lightning Farming: During thunderstorms, a channeling trident can be thrown at pigs to convert them into zombified piglins on demand. This is an unreliable but technically free source of golden swords, rotten flesh, and gold nuggets.
  • Fire Kill Cooking: Using a flint and steel, fire aspect sword, or lava to kill pigs causes them to drop cooked porkchops instead of raw. This skips the smelting step entirely and is a common trick for players who do not want to bother with furnaces.

Commands & NBT

Here are common commands for summoning pigs with specific properties:

/summon minecraft:pig ~ ~ ~

Summons a basic adult pig at the player’s location.

/summon minecraft:pig ~ ~ ~ {Age:-24000}

Summons a baby pig. The Age tag is set to -24000 ticks (20 minutes), which is the time it takes to grow into an adult.

/summon minecraft:pig ~ ~ ~ {Saddle:1b}

Summons a pig with a saddle already equipped.

/summon minecraft:pig ~ ~ ~ {CustomName:'{"text":"Dinner"}',CustomNameVisible:1b}

Summons a pig with a visible custom name. You can name it whatever you want. We are not here to judge.

/summon minecraft:pig ~ ~ ~ {Passengers:[{id:"minecraft:zombie",IsBaby:1b}]}

Summons a pig jockey — a baby zombie riding a pig. The baby zombie is fully hostile.

  • Notable NBT Keys:
  • Saddle — 1b if the pig has a saddle, 0b or absent if not.
  • Age — Negative value for babies (ticks until adulthood). 0 for adults.
  • InLove — Ticks remaining in love mode after being fed.
  • ForcedAge — Used when growth is accelerated by feeding.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Type Tags (Java):
    • #minecraft:fall_damage_immune — Pigs are NOT in this tag. They take full fall damage.
    • #minecraft:dismounts_underwater — Players are ejected from a saddled pig when it enters water deep enough to submerge.
  • Gamerules:
    • doMobLoot — When set to false, pigs drop nothing on death.
    • doMobSpawning — When set to false, no new pigs spawn naturally.
    • mobGriefing — Does not affect pigs (they do not interact with blocks).
  • Loot Table Path: minecraft:entities/pig — Can be modified via datapacks to change what pigs drop.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Difficulty Scaling: Pigs are passive and do not deal damage, so difficulty settings have no direct effect on pig behavior. However, difficulty affects how quickly hunger depletes, which indirectly changes how often you need to farm pigs for food.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Spawn Groups: Java Edition spawns pigs in groups of 4. Bedrock Edition spawns them in groups of 1–3.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Baby Spawn Rate: Both editions have a 5% chance to spawn a baby pig as part of a natural spawn group.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Saddle Recovery: In both editions, the saddle drops on death. Neither edition allows saddle removal from a living pig without commands.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Lightning: Lightning conversion works identically in both editions — the pig is replaced by a zombified piglin. In Bedrock, the converted mob may briefly appear at a slightly offset position due to entity replacement timing differences, but the mechanic is functionally the same.

Sounds & Audio

  • entity.pig.ambient — The standard oink. Plays periodically when the pig is idle.
  • entity.pig.hurt — Higher-pitched squeal when the pig takes damage.
  • entity.pig.death — Longer squeal when the pig dies.
  • entity.pig.step — Soft footstep sounds when walking.
  • entity.pig.saddle — Plays when a saddle is placed on the pig.

History & Major Changes

  • Classic 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST (August 2009): Pigs added to the game. They are one of the very first mobs ever implemented in Minecraft.
  • Java Beta 1.5: Pigs can now be saddled and ridden using a saddle. No steering — the pig just wanders wherever it wants.
  • Java 1.0.0: Pigs now drop 1–3 raw porkchops (previously 0–2). Breeding mechanic added using wheat.
  • Java 1.4.2: Carrot on a stick added, allowing players to steer saddled pigs. Breeding food changed from wheat to carrots.
  • Java 1.8: Potatoes and beetroots added as alternative breeding foods.
  • Java 1.9: Sound events updated with new pig ambient, hurt, and death sounds.
  • Java 1.16 (Nether Update): Lightning-struck pigs now convert to zombified piglins instead of zombie pigmen, following the zombie pigman-to-zombified piglin rename and model change.
  • Bedrock 1.16.0: Same zombified piglin conversion change applied to Bedrock Edition.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Saddle Trap: There is no way to remove a saddle from a living pig in vanilla survival. This has been a known “feature” since saddles were added. Many players have accidentally wasted saddles on pigs before realizing this. Consider it a learning experience.
  • Riding Into Water: If you ride a saddled pig into deep water, you get dismounted automatically. The pig floats. You swim. The carrot on a stick is wasted. Nobody wins.
  • Fire Aspect Cooking: Killing a pig with a Fire Aspect sword drops cooked porkchops because the fire damage kills the pig while it is technically on fire. This is intentional behavior, not a bug, but many players discover it by accident and assume it is a glitch.
  • Baby Zombie Jockey Rarity: The pig jockey is one of the rarest naturally occurring mob combinations in the game. Most players have never seen one in survival without specifically trying to trigger it.

Advancements / Achievements

  • “When Pigs Fly” (Java — Advancement): Triggered by riding a pig (saddled, controlled with carrot on a stick) and having the pig take fall damage. The pig must fall more than 5 blocks while you are riding it. The easiest way to get this is to build a tall pillar, ride the pig off the edge, and accept that the pig is probably not going to survive the landing.
  • “When Pigs Fly” (Bedrock — Achievement): Same requirement — ride a saddled pig off a cliff and have it take fall damage. Worth 40 Gamerscore.
  • “The Parrots and the Bats” (Java — Advancement): Breed two animals. Pigs count. This is one of the easiest advancements to complete using two pigs and a carrot.
  • “Two by Two” (Java — Advancement): Breed all breedable mobs. Pigs are one of the required mobs on this list.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Origin Story: The pig model was actually the result of Notch accidentally making the body of the first mob model wrong — he swapped the height and length values. The resulting shape looked like a pig, so he went with it. The original “correct” model became the Creeper. So the Creeper exists because the pig was a happy accident. You are welcome.
  • Minecraft Dungeons: Pigs appear as background animals in several levels of Minecraft Dungeons. They do not drop loot or interact with gameplay — they are purely decorative.
  • Minecraft Legends: Pigs do not appear as controllable or combat units in Minecraft Legends.
  • Merchandise: The pig is one of the most commonly featured mobs on official Minecraft merchandise, including plush toys, LEGO sets, and clothing. Its simple, recognizable design makes it a popular branding choice.
  • Cultural Impact: The “When Pigs Fly” achievement is one of the most well-known achievements in all of gaming, referenced in countless videos, streams, and memes. It perfectly captures Minecraft’s sense of humor — technically accomplishing something impressive in the most absurd way possible.
  • Technoblade: The pig skin is closely associated with the legendary Minecraft content creator Technoblade, whose iconic player skin was a pig-themed design. The pig has taken on additional cultural significance in the Minecraft community as a tribute to his legacy.
