The Ender Dragon is the final boss of Minecraft, and calling it “the final boss” almost undersells it. This is a massive flying mob that lives in a barren hellscape called the End, perched on top of a tall obsidian pillar fountain, waiting for you to show up after weeks of preparation just so it can knock you into the void. It is the only mob in the game that has a dedicated health bar across the top of your screen, because the game wants you to watch your progress — and your hope — slowly tick away.

Every survival world builds toward this fight. You gather Ender Pearls, craft Eyes of Ender, locate a stronghold, activate a portal, and jump into a dimension that looks like someone deleted the ground and forgot to put it back. The Ender Dragon circles overhead, heals itself from End crystals on top of obsidian towers, and periodically dive-bombs you with the enthusiasm of a freight train that learned to fly. If you have never fought it before, you will die at least once. Probably more. That is not a prediction — it is a tradition.

Defeating the Ender Dragon for the first time activates the exit portal, spawns a dragon egg, triggers the credits sequence, and unlocks access to the outer End islands where you can find End cities, Elytra, and Shulker boxes. You can also resummon it by placing four End crystals on the exit portal, which means you can relive this traumatic experience as many times as you want.

Appearance

The Ender Dragon is the largest mob in Minecraft and it looks exactly like what you would get if you asked a dragon to be built entirely out of blocks. Its body is dark gray to black, with bright purple eyes that glow in the dim light of the End. A pair of massive wings stretch out from its body, and they actually animate — flapping in smooth sweeping motions as the dragon circles the island.

The model is made up of multiple connected segments: a large angular head, a series of neck segments, a wide body, two articulated wings, and a segmented tail. The mouth opens during the charge attack and when perched on the exit portal fountain. Purple particle effects trail behind it constantly, like a visual reminder that this thing is not from your dimension and does not play by your rules.

When the dragon takes damage, it flashes red briefly. When it is perching on the fountain and using its breath attack, a purple-pink cloud of particles billows from its mouth. There are no baby, variant, or alternate forms of the Ender Dragon — there is exactly one, and that is more than enough.

Behavior & AI

The Ender Dragon has the most complex AI of any mob in the game, operating on a phase-based system with multiple distinct behaviors. Understanding these phases is the difference between a clean fight and getting launched into the void.

  • Phase System: The dragon cycles through multiple phases — circling, strafing, charging, landing/perching, and sitting. The phase it enters depends on the state of the End crystals and a degree of randomness.
  • Circling Phase: The default behavior. The dragon flies in wide circles around the central End island, orbiting the obsidian pillars. During this phase, it does not directly attack but will deal contact damage if you collide with its wings or body. It targets specific “nodes” in the sky and moves between them.
  • Strafing Phase: The dragon targets a player and launches a fireball (Ender Acid / Dragon Fireball) while flying past. This projectile lands and creates a lingering area-of-effect damage cloud on the ground.
  • Charging Phase: The dragon turns and flies directly at a player at high speed. This is the dive-bomb. It deals heavy contact damage and significant knockback — enough to send you flying off the island if you are near the edge.
  • Perching Phase: The dragon descends onto the exit portal fountain in the center of the island. While perched, it breathes Dragon’s Breath — a purple cloud of area damage — in front of it. This is your best window to deal melee damage to the head, which takes bonus damage compared to other body parts.
  • Targeting: The dragon always targets players. It does not attack Endermen, and Endermen do not attack the dragon. If multiple players are present, it can switch targets between phases.
  • Crystal Healing: While End crystals are active on top of the obsidian pillars, a visible healing beam connects the nearest crystal to the dragon, regenerating 1 HP per tick (20 HP per second). The dragon prioritizes circling near crystals while they are intact.
  • Block Destruction: The Ender Dragon destroys almost every block it flies through except end stone, obsidian, bedrock, end portal frames, end portal blocks, iron bars, and crying obsidian. Your carefully placed blocks mean nothing to this mob.
  • Despawning: The Ender Dragon never despawns. It does not follow standard mob despawn rules. If you leave the End and come back, it will still be there, circling, waiting, judging you.
  • Void Interaction: The dragon cannot be knocked into the void by players. If it somehow gets too low, it will fly back up. You, on the other hand, have no such protection.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Wing/Body Contact: When the dragon flies through a player during its circling or charging phase, it deals direct damage and heavy knockback. The knockback is the real threat here — on Hard difficulty, it can launch you 10+ blocks, which near the island edge means a one-way trip to the void.
  • Dragon Fireball (Ender Acid): Launched during the strafing phase. This is not an Ender Charge like a Ghast fireball — it cannot be deflected. The projectile itself deals no impact damage but creates a lingering area-effect cloud (purple particles) that deals 6 magic damage per second (3 hearts/sec) to anything standing in it. The cloud lasts approximately 30 seconds.
  • Dragon’s Breath: Used while perched on the fountain. The dragon spews a purple particle cloud in front of it that deals the same magic damage as the Ender Acid cloud — 6 damage per second. You can collect this with glass bottles to obtain Dragon’s Breath items, which are used to make Lingering Potions.
  • Damage Zones (Hitbox): Different parts of the dragon take different amounts of damage. The head takes full damage from all sources. The body, wings, and tail take only 25% of melee and projectile damage. Always aim for the head, especially during the perching phase when it is accessible.
  • Immunities: The Ender Dragon is immune to fire, lava, poison, Instant Damage potions, Wither effect, drowning, suffocation, and all status effects. Arrows of Harming, Poison, and other tipped arrows have no special effect beyond their base arrow damage. Beds explode in the End, and yes, that explosion does damage the dragon — this is a real strategy.
  • Knockback Immunity: The dragon is 100% immune to knockback from any source. No punch bow, no knockback sword, no explosions move it.
  • Shield Interaction: Shields can block the wing/body contact damage but the knockback still applies. Shields do not block the breath or acid cloud damage since it is area-effect magic.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location The End — central island only (coordinates centered on 0, 0)
Biomes The End biome (the_end)
Y-Level Range Spawns above the exit portal fountain, approximately Y=64 and above. Flies between Y=40 and Y=120+ during combat.
Light Level Any — light level is irrelevant. The End has an ambient light level of 0.
Required Block None — the dragon spawns in the air above the portal. Resummoning requires 4 End crystals placed on the exit portal’s bedrock edges.
Group Size 1 — always exactly one Ender Dragon at a time
Weight N/A — does not use the standard mob spawning weight system. It is a scripted boss spawn.
Edition Differences The initial spawn and resummoning process works the same on both Java and Bedrock. On Bedrock, the dragon fight can occasionally bug out during resummoning, with crystals not properly triggering the respawn sequence — save and reload the world if this happens.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Endermen: The dragon and Endermen completely ignore each other. Endermen will not attack the dragon even if hit by its wing, and the dragon does not target Endermen. During the fight, Endermen mostly just stand around being tall and menacing, occasionally getting angry at you for looking at them at the worst possible time.
  • Block Destruction: The dragon destroys nearly all blocks it contacts during flight. The exceptions are: end stone, obsidian, bedrock, end portal frames, end portal blocks, iron bars (used to cage some End crystals), and crying obsidian. Any blocks you place for cover — ladders, cobblestone, dirt — will be obliterated on contact.
  • End Crystals: The dragon has a direct mechanical relationship with End crystals sitting on top of the obsidian pillars. Each active crystal heals the dragon at a rate of 1 HP per tick when the dragon is within range. Destroying a crystal while its healing beam is active deals 10 damage to the dragon. Crystals explode when destroyed with a power of 6 (same as a Charged Creeper).
  • Exit Portal: The dragon perches on the bedrock fountain (exit portal structure) during its landing phase. When killed, the exit portal activates, and a dragon egg spawns on top of the portal (first kill only).
  • Obsidian Pillars: The pillars regenerate each time you resummon the dragon, along with fresh End crystals on top. Some crystals spawn inside iron bar cages, requiring you to break through the cage first.
  • Boats & Minecarts: The dragon destroys boats and minecarts on contact. Do not bring a boat to the End fight expecting it to help.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Experience Orbs 12,000 XP (first kill) / 500 XP (subsequent kills) Guaranteed The first kill drops the most XP of any single mob in the game. XP orbs rain down from the dragon’s death animation. Subsequent kills via resummoning only drop 500 XP. Looting enchantment has no effect.
Dragon Egg 1 First kill only Spawns on top of the exit portal. The egg is a gravity-affected block that teleports when clicked directly. Use a piston to push it off the portal, or break the block underneath it and catch it with a torch. Only one exists per world — do not lose it.
Exit Portal Activation 1 Guaranteed (first kill) The bedrock fountain fills with the exit portal, allowing you to return to the Overworld and triggering the end credits sequence.
End Gateway Portal 1 Guaranteed A small bedrock gateway portal spawns at the edge of the main island after each kill (up to 20 total). These teleport you to the outer End islands where End cities and Elytra can be found.
Dragon’s Breath Variable Collectible during fight Not a traditional drop. Use glass bottles on the Dragon’s Breath or Ender Acid clouds during the fight to collect Dragon’s Breath items. Used to brew Lingering Potions.

Player Uses & Farming

  • First Kill — Progression Gate: The first dragon kill is the single most important mob kill in Minecraft. It activates the exit portal (allowing return to the Overworld with credits), spawns the dragon egg (unique trophy), and generates the first End gateway portal (access to outer End islands, End cities, Elytra, and Shulker boxes). Everything endgame flows through this fight.
  • XP Source: The first kill drops 12,000 XP — enough to jump from level 0 to roughly level 68. Subsequent kills drop only 500 XP, so dragon farming for XP is not worth the effort compared to a good Enderman farm.
  • End Gateway Generation: Each dragon kill generates a new End gateway at the island perimeter, up to 20 total. If you need multiple gateway access points to different outer island locations, resummoning and killing the dragon repeatedly is the way to get them.
  • Dragon’s Breath Farming: Bring a stack of glass bottles to the fight. During the perching phase, run up and right-click the purple breath cloud with bottles instead of (or in addition to) attacking. Each bottle fills with one Dragon’s Breath item. You need these to brew Lingering Potions, which are also required for tipped arrows.
  • Dragon Egg: The egg is purely decorative — it has no functional use. But there is only one per world, making it the rarest block in the game. Collect it by using a piston to push it, or by removing the block below it so it falls onto a torch.
  • Bed Strategy: Beds explode when you try to use them in the End (and the Nether). This explosion deals massive damage. Placing a bed near the dragon’s head during the perching phase and clicking it is one of the fastest ways to kill the dragon. Bring several beds, a blast protection chestplate, and accept that you will take damage from your own explosions. The beds are cheap, the strategy is effective, and the irony of killing a dragon with bedroom furniture never gets old.
  • Resummoning: To fight the dragon again, place 4 End crystals on the edges of the exit portal (one on each side). This regenerates the obsidian pillars, spawns fresh crystals on top, and brings back the dragon. Each End crystal requires 7 glass, 1 Eye of Ender, and 1 Ghast Tear — so the total cost is 28 glass, 4 Eyes of Ender, and 4 Ghast Tears per resummon.

Commands & NBT

The Ender Dragon has some unique quirks with commands. It does not behave like a normal mob when summoned, and many standard mob NBT tags either do not apply or do not work as expected.

/summon minecraft:ender_dragon ~ ~ ~

This summons an Ender Dragon at your location. Fair warning: a summoned dragon still destroys blocks, still flies around, and still wants you dead. It will not have the fight phases or End crystal healing unless you are in the End with the proper structure.

/summon minecraft:ender_dragon ~ ~ ~ {DragonPhase:0}

Summons a dragon in the circling phase (phase 0). The DragonPhase NBT tag controls which behavior phase the dragon starts in.

/summon minecraft:ender_dragon ~ ~ ~ {DragonPhase:10}

Summons a dragon in the perching/sitting phase (phase 10). The dragon will land and stay put — useful for screenshots, testing, or just enjoying the view of a dragon that is not actively trying to murder you.

  • DragonPhase (int): Controls the current AI phase. Key values: 0 = circling, 1 = strafing, 2 = landing approach, 3 = perching, 6 = charge attack, 10 = sitting idle. Other values exist for transitional states.
  • Health (float): Sets the dragon’s health. Default is 200.0f.
  • Invulnerable (byte): Setting to 1b makes the dragon completely invincible. Useful for cinematic builds or custom maps.
  • NoAI (byte): Setting to 1b disables AI entirely. The dragon will float in place, motionless. Combine with DragonPhase:10 for a stationary perched dragon.
  • CustomName (string): Yes, you can name the Ender Dragon. The custom name displays on the boss bar at the top of the screen. {CustomName:'"Gerald"'} is a popular choice for reasons nobody can fully explain.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Type Tag: minecraft:ender_dragon — no broader entity type tags apply since it is the only boss mob of its kind.
  • mobGriefing gamerule: Setting /gamerule mobGriefing false prevents the Ender Dragon from destroying blocks on contact. This is extremely useful on multiplayer servers where you do not want the dragon demolishing builds during a resummoned fight.
  • doMobLoot gamerule: Setting to false prevents the XP orbs from dropping on dragon death. The dragon egg and exit portal still activate regardless.
  • Loot Table Path: minecraft:entities/ender_dragon — the dragon’s loot table is essentially empty by default (XP is handled separately by code, not loot tables). You can override this in datapacks to add custom drops.
  • Datapack Boss Customization: Advanced datapacks can modify the dragon fight significantly — custom phases via function triggers, modified crystal behavior, and altered loot. The minecraft:ender_dragon entity tag and #minecraft:dragon_immune block tag are key hooks.
  • #minecraft:dragon_immune block tag: Controls which blocks the dragon cannot destroy. By default includes bedrock, obsidian, end stone, end portal, end portal frame, end gateway, iron bars, and crying obsidian. You can add blocks to this tag via datapacks to make them dragon-proof.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Difficulty Scaling (Damage): The dragon’s contact damage scales with difficulty — 6 damage on Easy, 10 on Normal, 15 on Hard. The Dragon’s Breath and Ender Acid cloud damage remains constant across difficulties at 6 damage per second.
  • Difficulty Scaling (Behavior): On Hard difficulty, the dragon is more aggressive with its charge attacks and perches less frequently, giving you fewer melee windows. The overall fight duration tends to be significantly longer on Hard.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Perching Behavior: On Java Edition, the dragon perches on the fountain more reliably and predictably. On Bedrock, the dragon sometimes refuses to perch for extended periods, making the fight longer and more frustrating if you are relying on melee damage during the landing phase.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Dragon’s Breath Collection: Both editions allow collecting Dragon’s Breath with glass bottles. On Bedrock, the hitbox for collecting the breath cloud can be slightly inconsistent — aim at the densest part of the particles.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Bed Explosions: Beds explode in the End on both editions and both deal significant damage to the dragon. The explosion radius and self-damage are comparable, though exact damage values can differ slightly due to explosion calculation differences between editions.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Resummoning Bugs: Bedrock Edition has a known issue where placing the 4 End crystals on the exit portal sometimes fails to trigger the resummoning sequence. Saving, quitting, and reloading the world usually fixes it.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — XP Orbs: On Java, the 12,000 XP drops as multiple orbs that scatter around the portal area. On Bedrock, the XP drops in the same way but orb collection radius can vary slightly.

Sounds & Audio

  • Ambient (Roar): entity.ender_dragon.ambient — the deep, echoing roar the dragon makes while circling. You hear this the moment you enter the End and it immediately sets the tone for what is about to happen.
  • Flap: entity.ender_dragon.flap — the heavy wingbeat sound. Plays continuously during flight and gets louder as the dragon passes close to you.
  • Growl: entity.ender_dragon.growl — a lower, rumbling vocalization. Plays during phase transitions and when the dragon targets a player.
  • Hurt: entity.ender_dragon.hurt — plays when the dragon takes damage. You will hear this a lot if you are doing the fight correctly.
  • Death: entity.ender_dragon.death — the dramatic death sound that plays during the dragon’s extended death animation. It rises in the air, glows white, and explodes into XP orbs. One of the most satisfying sounds in the entire game.
  • Shoot (Fireball): entity.ender_dragon.shoot — plays when the dragon launches its Ender Acid fireball during the strafing phase.
  • Dragon’s Breath: entity.dragon_fireball.explode — the sound of the acid cloud forming when a fireball lands or when the dragon breathes while perched.

History & Major Changes

  • Java 1.0.0 (November 2011): The Ender Dragon was added alongside the End dimension as part of Minecraft’s official release. The original fight was far simpler — the dragon circled, shot acid, and that was about it.
  • Java 1.3.1: Experience orb drops were adjusted. The dragon became one of the most rewarding mobs in terms of XP.
  • Java 1.9 — The Combat Update (February 2016): The dragon fight was completely reworked. This update added the phase-based AI, the perching mechanic, Dragon’s Breath, the ability to resummon the dragon with End crystals, End gateway portals, and iron bar cages around some crystals. This is the version of the fight that exists today.
  • Java 1.9: Dragon’s Breath was added as a collectible item during the fight, enabling Lingering Potions and tipped arrow crafting.
  • Bedrock Edition 1.0 (December 2016): The Ender Dragon and End dimension were added to Bedrock, with the post-1.9 fight mechanics included from the start.
  • Java 1.20+: Minor bug fixes and interaction improvements. The dragon fight has been largely unchanged since 1.9 in terms of core mechanics.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • The Perching Lottery (Bedrock): On Bedrock Edition, the dragon occasionally enters a loop where it refuses to perch on the fountain for an unusually long time. If you have destroyed all the End crystals and the dragon just keeps circling, this is likely what is happening. Patience (or a lot of arrows) is your only option.
  • End Crystal Placement Failure (Bedrock): When resummoning, placing the four End crystals on the exit portal edges sometimes does not trigger the respawn. This is a known bug. Save and reload the world, then try again.
  • Dragon Egg Duplication: Various dragon egg duplication glitches have existed throughout Minecraft’s history. Most have been patched, but new ones occasionally surface with updates. If you are on a server, keep your egg secure.
  • Phantom Dragon Hitbox: The dragon’s multi-part hitbox occasionally desyncs visually, especially on high-latency servers. You might see arrows hit the dragon visually but deal no damage because they hit a non-head segment, or miss entirely due to the hitbox being slightly offset from the visible model.
  • Block Destruction Through Walls: The dragon can destroy blocks even slightly behind other blocks if its hitbox clips through. Your one-block-thick cobblestone shelter is less safe than you think.

Advancements / Achievements

  • Free the End (Java) / The End (Bedrock): Awarded for killing the Ender Dragon for the first time. This is one of the most significant advancements in the game and the culmination of the standard survival progression.
  • The Next Generation (Java): Awarded for holding the dragon egg. Requires collecting it from the exit portal after the first kill.
  • The End… Again… (Java) / The End… Again (Bedrock): Awarded for resummoning and killing the Ender Dragon a second time.
  • You Need a Mint (Java): Awarded for collecting Dragon’s Breath in a glass bottle during the fight. A reminder that this boss mob is also a crafting ingredient delivery system.
  • Great View From Up Here (Java): Awarded for levitating up 50 blocks from a Shulker’s attack — technically not a dragon advancement, but the Shulkers only become accessible after killing the dragon and reaching the outer End islands.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Named “Jean?”: Notch, Minecraft’s original creator, jokingly suggested the Ender Dragon’s name is “Jean?” — with the question mark included. This has never been made official in-game, but the community has adopted it as semi-canon lore.
  • The Only Female Mob: Notch also stated that the Ender Dragon is female, making her one of the only mobs in Minecraft with a confirmed gender. She lays an egg when killed, which is consistent with this.
  • Minecraft Dungeons: The Ender Dragon does not appear as a boss in Minecraft Dungeons, though End-themed content and Endermen are present.
  • LEGO Sets: The Ender Dragon has been featured in multiple LEGO Minecraft sets, including “The Ender Dragon” (21117) and “The End Battle” (21151). These are consistently some of the best-selling Minecraft LEGO sets.
  • Plush & Merchandise: The Ender Dragon is one of the most popular Minecraft mobs for merchandise, appearing as plush toys, action figures, and posters. The distinctive black and purple color scheme makes it instantly recognizable.
  • Speedrun Icon: Killing the Ender Dragon is the standard completion condition for Minecraft speedruns. The current world record for Any% Random Seed is measured in minutes, which is humbling when your first dragon fight probably took 45 minutes and three deaths.
  • Bed Meta: The bed explosion strategy for killing the dragon has become one of the most iconic “cheese” strategies in Minecraft. It is technically an exploit of the dimension mechanics (beds explode in the End), but it has been deliberately left in the game because it is too entertaining to remove.
  • Cultural Impact: The Ender Dragon fight and the credits sequence that follows are one of the most emotionally resonant moments in gaming. The “End Poem” written by Julian Gough that plays during the credits has been widely praised and discussed outside of the Minecraft community.
