Enderman

The Enderman is three blocks of pure unsettling energy wrapped in a dark, lanky frame with glowing purple eyes. It wanders the Overworld, Nether, and End like it owns the place — which, in the case of the End, it literally does. Endermen are neutral mobs, meaning they will leave you completely alone until you do the one thing the game practically begs you to do: look at them.

The moment your crosshair lands on an Enderman’s upper body, congratulations — you have made a mortal enemy. It opens its mouth, starts shaking with rage, and teleports directly into your personal space to rearrange your health bar. The kicker? It is three blocks tall, hits like a truck, and can teleport away from most of your attacks. Fighting an Enderman unprepared is like picking a fistfight with someone who can apparate.

Endermen are also the only reliable source of Ender Pearls, which you absolutely need to find the End Portal and fight the Ender Dragon. So no matter how much they terrify you, you are going to have to deal with them eventually. That is just how Minecraft works — the thing you need most is always attached to something that wants to kill you.

Appearance

The Enderman is one of the tallest non-boss mobs in the game, standing just under three blocks high. Its body is impossibly thin and dark — almost entirely black with a faint dark purple tint. The proportions are deliberately wrong in a way that makes it look alien: long arms that hang past its knees, a small head on a narrow body, and legs that seem too long for anything to actually walk on.

Its eyes are the standout feature. They glow a bright purple-pink and are the only part of the Enderman that emits light. When it is calm, the eyes just stare blankly into the middle distance. When you provoke it, its jaw drops open to reveal a gaping mouth, the eyes widen, and it starts shaking like a blender full of rage. Purple particles constantly drift off its body, the same particles you see when an Ender Pearl lands or an End Portal activates.

When an Enderman is carrying a block — which it often is — the block floats between its hands at about chest height. It is oddly adorable watching a terrifying three-block-tall shadow creature gently cradling a block of dirt like it is a precious treasure.

Behavior & AI

  • Neutral Until Provoked: Endermen wander peacefully until you either look directly at their upper body (head or torso) with your crosshair or attack them. Looking at their legs does not trigger aggro. The crosshair must rest on the upper half of the hitbox for the stare to register.
  • Stare Mechanic: If you look at an Enderman from up to 64 blocks away, it freezes in place, turns to face you, and begins shaking. If you break eye contact, it immediately teleports toward you and attacks. If you keep staring, it stays frozen — but the moment you look away or close the distance, it charges.
  • Teleportation: Endermen teleport constantly, both as idle behavior and in combat. They teleport to avoid projectiles (arrows, tridents, snowballs, eggs — everything), to close distance on a target, and randomly during normal wandering. They can teleport up to 32 blocks in any direction.
  • Block Picking: Endermen pick up and place certain blocks as part of their idle behavior. They can carry grass blocks, dirt, sand, gravel, clay, podzol, mycelium, rooted dirt, moss blocks, mud, muddy mangrove roots, mushroom blocks, pumpkins, melons, cacti, TNT, and flowers. They place these blocks randomly, which is why your carefully landscaped yard sometimes has mysterious holes in it.
  • Water and Rain Damage: Endermen take damage from water and rain. Contact with water deals 1 damage per half-second. When it rains, Endermen teleport frantically to try to find shelter, and if they cannot, they eventually die. This is one of the most reliable ways to deal with them if you are unprepared — lure them into water or fight during rain.
  • Daylight Behavior: Endermen are not harmed by sunlight, but they become passive during the day in the Overworld and will teleport away if a player approaches. At night, they resume normal behavior.
  • Persistence / Despawn: Endermen follow standard mob despawn rules. They despawn when more than 128 blocks from the nearest player and have a chance to despawn when more than 32 blocks away if no interaction has occurred recently. Named Endermen or those that have picked up items persist.
  • Pathfinding: When aggro, Endermen do not path around obstacles — they teleport through them. This makes walls largely useless against an angry Enderman unless the ceiling is two blocks high (they are too tall to fit).

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Melee Attack: Endermen attack with a straightforward melee strike. Their reach is slightly longer than many mobs due to their size, so do not assume you are safe just because there is a small gap.
  • Teleportation (Offensive): When aggro, Endermen teleport directly behind or beside the player before attacking. This makes kiting them in open spaces extremely difficult — they close gaps instantly.
  • Teleportation (Defensive): Endermen teleport away from all projectiles. Arrows, tridents, snowballs, eggs, splash potions (if thrown directly), and fire charges all trigger a defensive teleport. The only ranged attacks that reliably hit are lingering potions and splash potions that land near their feet rather than hitting them directly.
  • Water Vulnerability: Water deals continuous damage to Endermen (1 HP per half-second). They will attempt to teleport away from water immediately, but if trapped, the water will kill them.
  • Fire and Lava: Endermen take fire damage normally but will teleport out of fire and lava. They are not immune, just very good at escaping it.
  • Immunities: Endermen are immune to projectile damage because they teleport before the projectile connects. They are not immune to the damage type itself — they simply dodge every time.
  • Knockback: Endermen have no knockback resistance, so a weapon with Knockback can keep them at a distance. However, they may teleport back immediately after being knocked away.
  • Shield Interaction: Blocking an Enderman’s attack with a shield negates the damage. The Enderman does not have a special shield-disabling mechanic.

Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms

Endermite (Related Spawn)

  • Trigger: When a player throws an Ender Pearl, there is a 5% chance an Endermite spawns at the landing location.
  • Enderman Reaction: Endermen are hostile toward Endermites and will attack them on sight. This is the only mob Endermen will naturally target without provocation.
  • Farm Exploitation: This aggro behavior is the foundation of nearly every Enderman XP farm. An Endermite placed on a platform lures Endermen toward it, where they fall into a kill chamber. More on this in the farming section.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Overworld, Nether (Warped Forest, Soul Sand Valley), The End
Biomes Overworld: All biomes (rare). Nether: Warped Forest (very common), Soul Sand Valley (uncommon). The End: All End biomes (extremely common).
Y-Level Range Overworld: Any valid spawnable Y-level. Nether: Y 0–127. The End: Any valid Y-level on end stone.
Light Level Overworld: Light level 0 (Java) / 7 or below (Bedrock). Nether and End: Any light level.
Required Block Requires a solid, opaque block with 3 blocks of air above it (Endermen need vertical clearance due to their height).
Group Size Java: 1–4 (Overworld), 4 (Warped Forest), 1 (End)
Bedrock: 1–2 (Overworld), 1–4 (Warped Forest), 1 (End)
Weight Overworld: 10 (relatively rare among hostile mobs). Warped Forest: 1 (but it is the only mob that spawns there, so it dominates the spawn cap). The End: Overwhelmingly dominant — nearly all mob spawns in the End are Endermen.
Edition Differences Java requires light level 0 for Overworld spawns. Bedrock allows spawns at light level 7 or below, making Endermen slightly more common on the surface in Bedrock.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Endermite Hostility: Endermen attack Endermites on sight with no provocation needed. This is their only natural mob-versus-mob aggression. It exists because Endermites are canonically parasites from the End dimension.
  • Iron Golem Interaction: If an Enderman is provoked by a player near a village, nearby Iron Golems may engage the Enderman. The Enderman will fight back against the golem.
  • Block Griefing: Endermen picking up and placing blocks can ruin builds, farms, and landscapes. They can pick up blocks from farms, displace redstone contraptions, and generally cause low-level chaos. This is purely their idle behavior — they are not targeting your builds on purpose, it just feels that way.
  • Boats and Minecarts: Endermen can be trapped in boats and minecarts. Once trapped, they cannot teleport out, which is extremely useful for both transport and neutralizing them. An Enderman in a boat is basically a very angry, very tall passenger who is going wherever you decide.
  • Pumpkin Head Immunity: Wearing a carved pumpkin on your head prevents Endermen from becoming aggravated when you look at them. Your vision is severely limited by the pumpkin overlay, but the Enderman does not detect the stare. This is the safest way to walk through the End without starting a riot.
  • The End Dimension: Endermen are everywhere in the End. The outer End islands are carpeted with them. Moving through the End without provoking at least one is essentially impossible unless you wear a pumpkin head or keep your crosshair pointed at the ground.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Ender Pearl 0–1 Guaranteed Roll Drops 1 extra per level of Looting (max 0–4 with Looting III). Only drops when killed by a player or tamed wolf.
Held Block 1 100% (if carrying) If the Enderman was carrying a block when killed, that block drops as an item.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Ender Pearl Source: Endermen are the primary renewable source of Ender Pearls. You need Ender Pearls to craft Eyes of Ender (combined with Blaze Powder), which are required to locate and activate the End Portal. After that, Ender Pearls remain useful as a teleportation tool — throw one and you teleport to where it lands, taking 5 fall damage in the process.
  • XP Farming: Enderman farms are among the most efficient XP farms in the game. They drop 5 XP per kill, spawn in massive numbers in the End, and can be funneled using Endermite aggro. A well-built End-based Enderman farm can yield 30+ levels in minutes.
  • Classic Enderman Farm Design: Build a platform at Y=1 or in the void area of the End (at least 128 blocks from any spawnable surface). Place an Endermite in a minecart on the platform so Endermen across the End islands can see it. Endermen path toward the Endermite, fall off the edge into a 43-block drop (leaving them at 1 HP), and collect at the bottom where the player finishes them with one hit.
  • Overworld Farming: Less efficient but possible. Build a dark room at least 3 blocks tall with a water trench around the kill zone. Endermen will spawn in the dark room and avoid the water, funneling toward the player. Rates are much lower than End farms because Overworld spawn pools include every hostile mob, not just Endermen.
  • Warped Forest Farming: The Warped Forest in the Nether is an excellent mid-game Enderman farming spot because only Endermen spawn there. Build a simple platform with Endermite bait and a fall trap. Rates are better than Overworld farms and you do not need End access.
  • Pearl Stasis Chambers: Ender Pearls can be suspended mid-flight in unloaded chunks. When the chunk loads, the pearl lands and teleports the player. This is used for instant long-distance travel on servers and in technical play.

Commands & NBT

Here are common commands for summoning and customizing Endermen:

/summon minecraft:enderman ~ ~ ~

Summon a basic Enderman at your location.

/summon minecraft:enderman ~ ~ ~ {carriedBlockState:{Name:"minecraft:grass_block"}}

Summon an Enderman holding a grass block. The carriedBlockState tag accepts any valid block ID.

/summon minecraft:enderman ~ ~ ~ {CustomName:'{"text":"Gerald"}',CustomNameVisible:1}

Summon a named Enderman that will not despawn.

/summon minecraft:enderman ~ ~ ~ {Attributes:[{Name:"generic.max_health",Base:100}],Health:100}

Summon an Enderman with 100 HP (50 hearts) instead of the default 40.

  • Notable NBT Keys:
  • carriedBlockState — Defines the block the Enderman is holding. Uses {Name:"block_id"} format.
  • AngerTime — Ticks remaining on the Enderman’s aggro state. Set to 0 to calm a provoked Enderman.
  • AngryAt — UUID of the entity the Enderman is angry at.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Type Tag: #minecraft:enderman — Note: Endermen do not have a dedicated entity type tag group by default, but they are part of general mob tags.
  • Mob Griefing Gamerule: /gamerule mobGriefing false disables Enderman block-picking behavior entirely. This is one of the most common gamerule changes on servers specifically because of Enderman griefing.
  • Loot Table Path: minecraft:entities/enderman — Modify this in datapacks to change Enderman drops.
  • Spawn Egg: Available in Creative mode as “Enderman Spawn Egg” (dark green with black spots).

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Easy vs. Normal vs. Hard Damage: Enderman melee damage scales with difficulty: 4.5 damage on Easy, 7 on Normal, 10.5 on Hard. Their health, speed, and teleportation behavior remain the same across all difficulties.
  • Java vs. Bedrock Spawning: Java requires light level 0 for Overworld Enderman spawns, while Bedrock allows light level 7 or below. This means you will see more surface Endermen in Bedrock Edition.
  • Java vs. Bedrock Teleportation: Teleportation behavior is slightly different between editions. In Java, Endermen attempt to teleport up to 32 blocks in a random direction. In Bedrock, the teleportation range and frequency can differ slightly, and Endermen may teleport more aggressively when taking damage.
  • Java vs. Bedrock Provocation: The stare detection works the same in both editions, but Bedrock players occasionally report slightly different crosshair sensitivity for triggering aggro. The mechanic itself is identical — crosshair on upper body within 64 blocks.
  • Warped Forest Spawning: Both editions feature Enderman spawning in Warped Forests, but spawn rates may vary slightly due to different spawn algorithms between Java and Bedrock.

Sounds & Audio

  • Idle / Ambient: entity.enderman.ambient — A low, distorted sound that plays randomly while the Enderman wanders. It is actually a reversed and pitch-shifted recording of “hi” and “what’s up” from the game’s sound designer.
  • Stare (Aggro Warning): entity.enderman.stare — A distinctive, rising, unsettling sound that plays when you look at an Enderman. This is your cue to either commit to the fight or look away very carefully.
  • Scream (Attack): entity.enderman.scream — Plays when the Enderman becomes fully aggravated and charges. It is loud, it is distorted, and it is designed to make you panic.
  • Hurt: entity.enderman.hurt — Plays when the Enderman takes damage.
  • Death: entity.enderman.death — Plays when the Enderman is killed.
  • Teleport: entity.enderman.teleport — The “vwoop” sound that plays whenever an Enderman teleports. You will hear this constantly in the End.

History & Major Changes

  • Beta 1.8 (Adventure Update): Endermen added to the game. Originally had green eyes and dropped diamonds instead of Ender Pearls.
  • 1.0.0 (Official Release): Eyes changed to purple. Ender Pearls added as their primary drop. End dimension and Ender Dragon added, giving Endermen their dimensional home.
  • 1.4.2: Endermen could now pick up additional block types. Their block-picking list was expanded significantly.
  • 1.8: Endermen became slightly more aggressive and their teleportation AI was improved. They could now teleport to avoid most projectile attacks more reliably.
  • 1.9 (Combat Update): Endermen received adjustments to work with the new combat mechanics. Shield blocking was confirmed to work against Enderman attacks.
  • 1.10: Endermen could now spawn in Nether wastes (rare). This gave players a Nether source for Ender Pearls before the full Nether Update.
  • 1.16 (Nether Update): Warped Forest biome added, where Endermen are the dominant (and only) mob spawn. This became a hugely popular mid-game farming location. Soul Sand Valley also added as an Enderman spawn location.
  • 1.17 (Caves & Cliffs Part 1): Endermen could now pick up additional new blocks like moss blocks and rooted dirt.
  • 1.19 (The Wild Update): Endermen could pick up mud and muddy mangrove roots.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Boat Trapping: Endermen cannot teleport out of boats. This is technically intended behavior, but it feels like an exploit because it completely neutralizes their most dangerous ability. A boated Enderman is harmless and hilarious.
  • Rain Panic: During rain, Endermen teleport so frantically trying to escape the water damage that they sometimes teleport into caves, ravines, or other enclosed spaces and get stuck. You can sometimes find random Endermen deep underground after a rainstorm.
  • Stare Through Glass: Looking at an Enderman through glass or glass panes does not trigger aggro in Java Edition. This is intentional and useful — you can safely observe them through windows. In Bedrock, this behavior is consistent as well.
  • Piston Block Duplication: In certain configurations, Endermen picking up blocks that are simultaneously being pushed by pistons have historically caused duplication glitches. Most of these have been patched, but new ones surface occasionally.
  • Suffocation in Low Ceilings: Because Endermen are nearly 3 blocks tall, they can take suffocation damage if they teleport into a space with a 2-block ceiling. Building a shelter with a 2-block-high ceiling is one of the oldest Enderman-proofing strategies in the game.

Advancements / Achievements

  • Monster Hunter (Java): Kill any hostile mob. Endermen count toward this advancement.
  • Monsters Hunted (Java): Kill one of every hostile mob. Endermen are on this list and must be killed for the advancement.
  • Adventure (Java): Kill at least one of 34 mob types, or be killed by at least one. Endermen qualify.
  • Monster Hunter (Bedrock): Kill a hostile mob. Same idea as Java — Endermen count.
  • Eye Spy (Java): Follow an Eye of Ender to a stronghold. Not directly about Endermen, but you need their Ender Pearls to craft the Eyes of Ender that trigger this advancement.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Origin of the Design: The Enderman was inspired by the Slender Man internet creepypasta — a tall, thin, dark figure that you should not look at. Notch (Markus Persson) confirmed this influence during development.
  • Sound Design Easter Egg: The Enderman’s idle sounds are reversed and pitch-shifted human speech. If you reverse the audio files, you can hear phrases like “hi,” “hey,” “what’s up,” and “look for the eye.” This is one of the creepiest Easter eggs in the game.
  • Enderman Language: The End Poem and the Enderman’s reversed speech have led to extensive community lore about a lost Enderman civilization and language. None of this is officially canon, but Mojang has never denied it either.
  • Minecraft Dungeons: Endermen appear in Minecraft Dungeons as enemies with similar teleportation abilities. They are just as annoying in an action-RPG as they are in the base game.
  • Merchandise: The Enderman is one of the most merchandised Minecraft mobs, appearing on clothing, toys, figurines, and plushies. The combination of distinctive silhouette and purple eyes makes it instantly recognizable.
  • Cultural Impact: “Don’t look at the Enderman” has become a common phrase in gaming culture, extending beyond Minecraft to describe any situation where acknowledging something makes it worse.
