Happy Ghast

The happy ghast is what happens when the game takes one of its most terrifying Nether mobs and says, “What if we made it nice?” And honestly, it works. This massive floating marshmallow is the friendly counterpart to the regular ghast — same general shape, same ghostly vibes, but instead of screaming fireballs at your face, it smiles at you and lets you ride it through the sky like some kind of blocky hot air balloon.

Added in the Chase the Skies update (Java 1.21.6 / Bedrock 1.21.90), the happy ghast is Minecraft’s first true flying mount. Not a glider like the Elytra, not a bouncy slime launcher, not a creative mode cheat — an actual living, breathing (well, floating) creature that you and up to three friends can climb aboard and pilot through the clouds. Getting one requires a bit of patience and a trip to the Nether, but once you have a fully grown happy ghast with a harness strapped on, the entire Overworld becomes your playground.

The catch? You cannot just find one wandering around. Happy ghasts do not spawn naturally anywhere. You have to grow one from a dried ghast block, nurture it through its ghastling phase, and wait for it to mature. Think of it as Minecraft’s most rewarding pet adoption program — except the pet is four blocks wide and floats.

Last Major Change Bedrock: 1.21.100 — added XP drops on kill, increased ride sound volume.

Appearance

The happy ghast looks like someone took a regular ghast and taught it what joy feels like. It shares the same general cubic, jellyfish-like silhouette — a large blocky white body with dangling tentacles underneath — but the face tells a completely different story. Instead of the ghast’s iconic crying, miserable expression, the happy ghast has a wide, genuine smile. It looks like it just got told the best joke in the Nether.

The body is slightly smaller than a regular ghast but still measures a hefty 4 × 4 × 4 blocks. The tentacles are shorter and stubbier compared to its hostile cousin. Under the white skin you can spot pink gills, adding a subtle detail that makes it feel more alive and less like a floating box of sadness.

When a harness is equipped, the happy ghast wears a pair of goggles on top of its head. The moment a player mounts up, those goggles flip down over its eyes — a small animation that tells you the happy ghast is now in piloting mode. The harness itself wraps around the body and comes in 16 different colors depending on the wool or dye used in crafting. If a lead is attached with a quad connection, an additional rope layer visually wraps around the happy ghast.

Ghastlings — the baby form — are significantly smaller, just slightly bigger than a single block. They have the same happy expression and pink gills but with even shorter tentacles relative to their size. Think of them as the happy ghast before it hit its growth spurt.

Behavior & AI

  • Passive alignment: The happy ghast will never attack you. Not on Easy, not on Hard, not if you punch it in the face. It is completely, unconditionally passive.
  • Home position: Every happy ghast has a “home” location that it remembers. Without a harness, it roams within a 64-block radius. With a harness equipped, that tightens to 32 blocks. When leashed, it stays within 10 blocks. The home position updates when a harness is placed or removed, when the happy ghast is unleashed or dismounted, or when it stops being tempted by an item.
  • Idle roaming: When no player is mounted or standing on it, the happy ghast floats around near its home position and tries to stay close to solid blocks. The goggles flip up during idle mode.
  • Tempting: Happy ghasts are tempted by snowballs and by a harness (only if they do not already have one equipped). Hold either item and a nearby happy ghast will float toward you.
  • Platform behavior: If a player stands on top of an unharnessed happy ghast, it immediately stops moving and aligns itself to the nearest cardinal direction. This turns it into a flat, stable platform — even without a harness. The same applies to harnessed happy ghasts when someone stands on top.
  • Descent after dismount: If all players dismount while the happy ghast is mid-air, it will slowly descend toward the ground before resuming its roaming behavior. It does not just hover in place forever.
  • Health regeneration: The happy ghast passively regenerates health at a rate of about 1 health point every 30 seconds under normal conditions. This rate jumps dramatically to 1 health point per second during rain or snow, or when the happy ghast is flying at cloud level (around Y 187–196). Fly into the clouds during a rainstorm and your happy ghast essentially becomes unkillable.
  • No despawning: Happy ghasts are persistent. They will not despawn, so once you have one, you have it until something kills it or you do.
  • Fire and lava vulnerability: Unlike its Nether-dwelling cousin, the happy ghast is not immune to fire or lava. It can also drown if submerged in water for too long. Keep it away from hazards.
  • No panic: The happy ghast does not panic or move erratically when damaged. It takes the hit with dignity.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Flight mount: The happy ghast is Minecraft’s first rideable flying mob. When harnessed and mounted, the pilot controls movement with WASD keys in the direction they are looking. The jump key (spacebar) makes it ascend, and the sneak key dismounts the player.
  • Multi-rider capacity: Up to 4 players can ride a single harnessed happy ghast simultaneously. The first player to mount becomes the pilot and sits in front, above the face. Additional riders are placed in slots clockwise from the pilot.
  • Entity transport: Mobs can be leashed to the happy ghast. Larger mobs like horses, donkeys, mules, camels, and sniffers use a special quad-connection leash. Boats and chest boats can also be leashed to it, allowing you to transport smaller mobs and items through the air. The leash snapping distance for happy ghasts is 16 blocks, compared to the standard 12 blocks.
  • Building platform: Players standing on top of the happy ghast can build from its back. Since it acts as a stable platform, this makes constructing tall structures in Survival mode significantly easier.
  • No attacks: The happy ghast has no attacks whatsoever. No fireballs, no ram, no retaliation. It is purely a utility mob.
  • No status effects: The happy ghast does not inflict any status effects. It also has no special immunities beyond being a passive mob.

Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth

  • Growth cycle: The happy ghast lifecycle goes: dried ghast block → ghastling (baby) → happy ghast (adult). The dried ghast must be submerged in water for approximately 20 minutes to hatch into a ghastling. The ghastling then takes another 20 minutes to grow into a full happy ghast.
  • Feeding snowballs: Feeding snowballs to a ghastling accelerates its growth, just like feeding other baby mobs speeds up their maturation. Snowballs also tempt both ghastlings and happy ghasts.
  • Imprinting: Ghastlings imprint on the nearest player or friendly mob when they hatch. They will follow that player around, staying within 32 blocks of their home position. They also follow adult happy ghasts and other adult passive/neutral mobs within 16 blocks.
  • No breeding: Happy ghasts cannot be bred. There is no way to create more happy ghasts other than hydrating additional dried ghast blocks.
  • Harness (mount equipment): To ride a happy ghast, you must craft and equip a harness. The recipe is 3 leather, 2 glass blocks, and 1 wool block (any color) in a crafting table. The wool color determines the harness color, and you can re-dye it with any of the 16 dyes. Use shears to remove a harness from a happy ghast.
  • Leash behavior: Happy ghasts can be leashed to a fence post to keep them from roaming away. While leashed, they roam within only 10 blocks of the leash point.

Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms

Ghastling

  • The baby form: Ghastlings are the juvenile version of the happy ghast. They hatch from a dried ghast block after 20 minutes of waterlogging.
  • Size: Slightly larger than a single block. Can fit through 2-block-wide openings.
  • Behavior: Ghastlings follow the nearest player, adult happy ghast, or adult passive mob within range. They cannot be harnessed or ridden. They idle within 32 blocks of their home position when no suitable entity is nearby.
  • Feeding: Snowballs accelerate growth. Without feeding, maturation takes approximately 20 minutes.
  • Drowning immunity: Ghastlings do not take drowning damage, which makes sense given they literally hatch from a block sitting in water.
  • Spawn egg chance: Using a happy ghast spawn egg has a 5% chance of spawning a ghastling instead of an adult.

Harnessed Happy Ghast

  • Visual change: Goggles appear on the happy ghast’s head. They flip down when a player mounts.
  • Functional change: Allows up to 4 players to mount and ride. Reduces roaming radius from 64 blocks to 32 blocks.
  • 16 color variants: The harness color matches the wool used in crafting or can be changed with dye afterward.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Does not spawn naturally. Must be grown from a dried ghast block placed in water in the Overworld (or any dimension with water).
Dried Ghast Source Found near Nether Fossil structures in Soul Sand Valley biomes. Can also be crafted (1 soul sand + 8 ghast tears) or obtained via piglin bartering (~2.13% chance per gold ingot).
Hydration Time ~20 minutes of continuous waterlogging to hatch a ghastling. The dried ghast progresses through 3 visual states (sad → neutral → happy) roughly every 5 minutes with green particles.
Growth Time ~20 minutes from ghastling to adult happy ghast. Accelerated by feeding snowballs.
Hydration Reversal If removed from water before hatching, the dried ghast reverts to its initial dry state on the same timescale. You cannot pause and resume the process.
Group Size N/A — each dried ghast produces exactly one ghastling.
Edition Differences Mechanics are consistent between Java and Bedrock. Bedrock initially had the health set to 40 (20 hearts) but this was reduced to 20 (10 hearts) in beta 1.21.80.27 to match Java.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Ghastling following: Ghastlings follow adult happy ghasts, players, and adult passive or neutral mobs within range. This means if you have multiple happy ghasts, the babies will flock to the adults like a little floating family.
  • Leash transport system: Boats and chest boats can be leashed to happy ghasts using leads. This allows you to put mobs in boats and fly them anywhere. Larger mobs (horses, donkeys, mules, camels, sniffers) use a special quad-connection leash that visually shows four leads extending from the happy ghast. Mobs leashed to a happy ghast take no fall damage when the happy ghast descends onto a flat surface.
  • No mob hostility: Iron golems, snow golems, and other defensive mobs do not target happy ghasts. They are recognized as fully passive entities.
  • Player collision: The happy ghast’s top surface acts as a solid platform only when a player is standing on it. Other entities phase through a mobile happy ghast — it only enables collision during its stationary state.
  • Water interaction: Flying a happy ghast into a water column will dismount the pilot. The happy ghast itself can drown if fully submerged for too long.
  • Avoidance blocks: Happy ghasts avoid certain blocks, as defined by the #happy_ghast_avoids block tag. This prevents them from flying directly into hazards during their roaming AI.
  • Lead theft protection: Other players cannot steal leashed entities from your happy ghast. Leash connections are protected.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Harness 1 100% (if equipped) Only drops if the happy ghast was wearing a harness at the time of death. Retains its dye color.
Experience 1–3 Guaranteed (player kill) Only drops when killed by a player. No XP from environmental damage kills.

The loot table for the happy ghast is, frankly, terrible. There is no practical reason to kill one. You get a handful of XP and a harness you could have removed with shears. The happy ghast is worth far more alive than dead. Do not kill the happy ghast.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Overworld flight: The primary use of the happy ghast is aerial travel without requiring Elytra or access to the End. For players in the mid-game who have Nether access but have not beaten the Ender Dragon yet, this is the first legitimate way to fly.
  • Multiplayer transport: Carrying up to 4 riders makes the happy ghast the best group travel option in the game. One pilot, three passengers, no questions asked.
  • Aerial building: Because the happy ghast acts as a stable platform when a player stands on it, you can park it at any height and build outward. This is a game-changer for survival builders working on tall structures, sky bases, or anything that would normally require an absurd amount of scaffolding.
  • Mob transport: The leash system allows you to airlift horses, camels, sniffers, and other large mobs. Put smaller mobs in boats and leash the boats. This replaces the old nightmare of pushing animals through hundreds of blocks of terrain.
  • Farming dried ghasts: You can farm dried ghast blocks through piglin bartering (2.13% chance per gold ingot) or by crafting them (1 soul sand + 8 ghast tears). A ghast farm in the Nether can supply a steady stream of ghast tears, and a gold farm can supply the bartering materials.
  • Not farmable for XP: With only 1–3 XP per kill and the effort required to grow one, the happy ghast is not a viable XP source. You are much better off with a standard mob farm.

Commands & NBT

Summon a happy ghast:

/summon minecraft:happy_ghast ~ ~ ~

Summon a ghastling (Java):

/summon minecraft:happy_ghast ~ ~ ~ {Age:-999}

Summon a ghastling (Bedrock):

/summon happy_ghast ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ minecraft:spawn_baby

Notable NBT keys (Java):

  • Age — Set to a negative integer to spawn a ghastling. The ghastling matures when Age reaches 0. Default for adults is 0.
  • flying_speed — The generic.flying_speed attribute now applies to happy ghasts (as of 1.21.6), allowing datapack creators to modify flight speed.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity tags: #can_equip_harness — entities that can equip harness items. #followable_friendly_mobs — non-baby entities that ghastlings will follow.
  • Item tags: #happy_ghast_food — items that can be fed to happy ghasts. #happy_ghast_tempt_items — items that tempt happy ghasts (snowballs and harnesses by default).
  • Block tags: #happy_ghast_avoids — blocks that happy ghasts avoid getting close to during roaming. #triggers_ambient_dried_ghast_block_sounds — blocks that trigger ambient sounds when a dried ghast is placed on them.
  • Loot table: minecraft:entities/happy_ghast
  • Attribute: generic.flying_speed now applies to happy ghasts, giving datapack and mod creators the ability to adjust flight speed.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Difficulty levels: Difficulty has no meaningful effect on the happy ghast itself since it is passive and does not deal damage. Hostile mobs can still damage it on all difficulties, so protecting your happy ghast from skeletons and other threats is your responsibility regardless of the difficulty setting.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — health history: Bedrock initially launched the happy ghast with 40 health (20 hearts) in the first beta, but this was quickly reduced to 20 health (10 hearts) to match Java Edition in beta 1.21.80.27.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — XP drops: Bedrock did not initially drop XP when killing a happy ghast. This was added in Bedrock beta 1.21.100.22.
  • Summon command syntax: The command to summon a ghastling differs between editions. Java uses the {Age:-999} NBT tag, while Bedrock uses the minecraft:spawn_baby event.
  • Core mechanics: Flight controls, harness behavior, leashing, and the dried ghast hydration process are otherwise identical between Java and Bedrock.

Sounds & Audio

  • entity.happy_ghast.ambient — Idle sounds when the happy ghast is floating around. Distinctly softer and more cheerful than the regular ghast’s haunting cries.
  • entity.happy_ghast.hurt — Played when the happy ghast takes damage.
  • entity.happy_ghast.death — Played when the happy ghast is killed.
  • entity.happy_ghast.ride — Looping ambient sound while a player is riding the happy ghast. Volume was increased in Bedrock 1.21.100.
  • entity.ghastling.ambient — Baby ghastling idle sounds.
  • item.harness.equip / item.harness.unequip — Played when equipping or shearing off a harness.

History & Major Changes

Advancements / Achievements

  • “Stay Hydrated!” (Husbandry): Unlocked when a player places a dried ghast block into water. This is the entry point for the entire happy ghast progression — place the block, start the process, and the advancement is yours.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • A group of happy ghasts or ghastlings is officially called a “chuckle.” Mojang really went with that.
  • The concept of a friendly, rideable ghast originated from Minecraft Legends, where ghast mounts were depicted as a gameplay feature.
  • In A Minecraft Movie, ghasts appear chained and mistreated by piglins, used as floating war machines. The happy ghast is essentially the feel-good redemption arc for the entire species.
  • The happy ghast is the first flying mount ever added to Minecraft, beating out years of community requests for rideable phantoms, parrots, or bees.
  • Despite being a ghast variant, the happy ghast is not immune to fire. It spent too long in the Overworld and lost its Nether privileges.
  • The dried ghast block can be crafted with 1 soul sand and 8 ghast tears, which means technically you are building a baby out of a sand block and the tears of its hostile relatives. Minecraft lore gets dark if you think about it too hard.
