The Camel Husk is what happens when a desert camel dies and nobody bothers to tell it. It is the undead version of the regular camel, and it rarely shows up alone. When you finally spot one, it usually has a spear-wielding husk in the driver’s seat and a bow-wielding parched riding shotgun, charging at you across the sand at night.
Here is the twist: the camel husk itself never attacks you. It is technically a passive mob that just happens to be driven by two hostile ones. Kill the riders and you are left with a dried-out, sun-proof, two-seat desert mount that will happily let you throw a saddle on it.
Camel husks arrived with the Mounts of Mayhem drop (Java Edition 1.21.11 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.130). They are one of the few undead mobs worth keeping alive on purpose, and one of the few that shrugs at the morning sun.
Overview / Quick Stats
| Attribute | Details |
|---|---|
| Name | Camel Husk |
| Namespaced Entity ID | Java: minecraft:camel_huskBedrock: minecraft:camel_husk (numeric ID 152) |
| Alignment | Passive on its own, but acts hostile while hostile riders control it. Classified as an animal, a monster, and undead all at once. |
| Dimensions/Hitbox | Standing: 1.7 blocks wide, 2.375 blocks tall Sitting: 1.7 blocks wide, 0.945 blocks tall |
| Health | 32 HP (16 hearts) |
| Armor | 0. It cannot wear armor; the only equipment slot is the saddle. |
| Base Damage | None. The camel husk never attacks. The damage comes from its riders:
Rider damage scales with difficulty the same way it does for a husk or parched on foot. |
| Movement Speed | Java: 0.09 movement attribute; when ridden, builds up to 3.885 blocks/second walking and 8.203 blocks/second sprinting Bedrock: Same ridden speeds as a regular camel (about 3.9 blocks/second walking, 8.2 blocks/second sprinting) |
| Knockback Resistance | None |
| Follow/Detection Range | None of its own. Its pathing is controlled by the front rider (the husk first, then the parched if the husk is gone). |
| Experience Drop | 1–3 XP when killed by a player or tamed wolf. Riders drop their own XP separately. |
| Spawn Location | Deserts, at night or during thunderstorms, always as a jockey with riders |

| Last Major Change | Java: 26.1 removed baby camel husks entirely Bedrock: 26.0 stopped them panicking when hit and fixed conduit damage and sleep blocking |
Appearance
Picture a regular camel that has been left in the desert for a few centuries. The camel husk has the same long-necked, two-humped blocky body, but its hide is a dried-out, sun-bleached tan with darker patches that make it look mummified and stitched together.
It has its own saddle texture, too, so a saddled camel husk still looks like it belongs in a tomb rather than a trading caravan. Everything else about the model matches the living camel: same animations for walking, sitting, standing up, and the big forward dash.
- Adult vs. baby: Only adults spawn naturally. Baby camel husks existed in Java 1.21.11 through commands only and were removed in Java 26.1.
- Sitting pose: Like a regular camel, it folds its legs and drops to under a block tall. A sitting camel husk jockey is a very strange sight.
- Jockey look: The standard spawn shows a husk holding an iron spear up front and a parched with a bow behind it. Either rider may also wear armor.
Behavior & AI
- Targeting/aggro: The camel husk has no attack goal. It only “hunts” you because the husk in front is steering it toward you. When the husk dies or dismounts, the parched takes over the reins.
- Once riders are gone: With both riders dead or dismounted, it turns fully passive and behaves like a normal camel. That is your cue to grab the saddle.
- Idle behavior: Wanders, sits down, and stands back up at random, just like a living camel.
- Daylight: Does not burn in sunlight. That means a camel husk jockey can keep patrolling after sunrise. The husk rider does not burn either, so do not count on dawn to clean up the mess.
- Panic: In Java Edition, it no longer panics while being steered by other mobs. In Bedrock Edition, it does not panic when hit at all (since 26.0).
- Persistence/despawn: Counts toward the monster mob cap and can despawn like any hostile mob. The first time a player interacts with it in any way, it becomes persistent and stops counting toward any mob cap.
- Water: Carries the
can_breathe_under_watertag in Java, so it does not drown. It still cannot be ridden underwater, same as a regular camel. - Fall damage: Can fall 6 blocks before taking damage, and takes half the usual fall damage after that. Anything riding it takes the same fall damage it does.
- Natural healing: Has a 1 in 900 chance per game tick to regenerate 1 HP.
- Step height: Walks straight up 1.5-block ledges without jumping, which means fences and walls do not stop it.
Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects
- Attacks: None. The camel husk is the vehicle, not the weapon.
- Rider attacks: The husk pokes you with an iron spear while the parched rains Weakness arrows from the back. Weakness cuts your melee damage right when you are trying to fight through the front rider, which is exactly why this combo is annoying.
- Dash (player-ridden): With a saddle, a player can charge a dash using the jump key. It launches up to 12 blocks forward and 1 block up, with a 2.75-second cooldown. You cannot sprint for a moment after dashing.
- Undead traits: Healed by Instant Damage and hurt by Instant Health. Immune to Regeneration and Poison. Takes extra damage from Smite.
- Wither: Ignored by the wither, like all undead mobs.
Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth
- Food: Rabbit’s feet. Regular camels want cactus; the undead version wants lucky charms. Holding one tempts it, and feeding one heals it.
- Taming: There is no taming step. Kill or dismount the riders, then saddle it and hop on.
- Saddle: One inventory slot, for a saddle. Put one on by using it on the camel husk or through its inventory. Shears remove the saddle.
- Riders: Holds two riders. The front seat steers. If the front rider gets off, the back rider takes control. In Bedrock Edition it stands up the moment you mount it; in Java Edition it stands once you move forward.
- Breeding: Not possible. It is undead, so every camel husk you own is one you found.
- Leash: Can be leashed once no hostile mob is riding it.
- Chest: No chest slot. If you want desert storage on legs, you need a llama or a donkey.
Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms
Camel Husk Jockey
- Makeup: One camel husk, one husk in front with an iron spear, one parched in back with a bow. Either rider may spawn with armor, and weapons or armor may be enchanted.
- Health pool: Husk 20 HP, parched 16 HP, camel husk 32 HP. That is 68 HP of enemy coming at you as one unit.
- Baby husk swap (Java): If a baby husk was supposed to spawn as a chicken jockey but rolls a camel husk instead, the chicken still spawns on its own and the baby husk rides the camel husk.
- Rarity: In Java, roughly 10% of eligible husk spawns, with at most one per spawn pack.
Baby Camel Husk
- Status: Never spawned naturally. In Java 1.21.11 it could be summoned with commands. Java 26.1 removed it, and existing babies now convert to adults.
Spawning
| Spawn Condition | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Overworld, desert surface, at night or during thunderstorms |
| Biomes | Desert only |
| Y-Level Range | No fixed range. It spawns wherever the desert surface sits. |
| Light Level | 0, following the normal hostile mob rules |
| Required Block | Any valid monster spawning surface with enough open space for the 1.7 × 2.375-block camel husk hitbox |
| Group Size | Java: 1 (at most one camel husk jockey per husk spawn pack) Bedrock: 1 |
| Weight | Java: No weight of its own. Each naturally spawning husk has a 10% chance to become a camel husk jockey. Bedrock: 25 in the desert monster spawn list |
| Edition Differences | Java piggybacks on husk spawns; Bedrock gives the jockey its own spawn entry. In both editions it never spawns without riders, and it does not spawn on Peaceful. |
Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs
- Golems: Iron golems and snow golems ignore the camel husk itself, which is rare for an undead mob. They still go after the husk and parched riding it.
- Armadillos: Roll up into their shells when a camel husk comes near, like they do for other undead.
- Zombie sieges (Java): Never spawns as part of a siege. If a jockey spawns naturally nearby during one, though, it joins in and acts like the rest of the zombies.
- Parrots: Because it counts as a monster, a parrot can imitate its sounds.
- Sleeping: In Bedrock 26.0 and later, a nearby camel husk no longer blocks you from sleeping.
- Conduits: In Bedrock 26.0 and later, conduits no longer damage it. Handy if you park one by your ocean base.
Drops & Loot
| Item | Quantity | Chance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rotten Flesh | 2-3 | Guaranteed Roll | Java: Looting raises the maximum by 1 per level (up to 2-6 with Looting III, averaging 4). Bedrock: Looting has no effect, always 2-3. |
| Saddle | 1 | Only if equipped | A saddle you put on it drops when it dies. Natural spawns do not come saddled. |
| Rabbit’s Foot (husk rider) | 1 | 50% (Bedrock) | In Bedrock Edition, a husk that spawned riding a camel husk has a 50% chance to drop a rabbit’s foot. Convenient, since that is exactly what heals the mount you just freed. |
| Rider Equipment | Varies | Standard equipment drop chance | The husk’s iron spear, the parched’s bow, and any armor follow normal mob equipment drop rules. Riders must be killed separately to drop anything. |
Player Uses & Farming
- Desert mount: The main reason to care. You get a two-seat camel with a 12-block dash that does not burn, does not drown, and ignores the golems guarding your village.
- How to claim one: Kill the husk and parched without hitting the camel husk. A Smite weapon is a bad idea here, since the mount is undead too. Plain Sharpness and careful aim work better.
- Fighting the jockey: Use cover to break line of sight with the parched, then deal with the husk. Weakness arrows make trading melee hits a losing game, so a bow or crossbow on the parched first is often the cleaner play.
- Healing: Carry rabbit’s feet. Golden rabbits live in deserts, so the healing item is local.
- Farming: Not worth building a farm around. The only drop is rotten flesh, which zombies already give you in bulk. Husk-based mob farms in deserts will occasionally produce jockeys in Java, but treat them as a bonus, not a target.
- Keep it: Any interaction makes it persistent, so once you have touched it, it will not despawn on you.

Difficulty & Edition Differences
- Peaceful: Does not spawn, even though the camel husk itself is passive.
- Easy/Normal/Hard: The camel husk does not change. The riders deal more damage and are more likely to spawn with armor and enchantments as regional difficulty climbs.
- Hard (Java): The husk rider can call husk reinforcements when hurt, just like any husk.
- Spawning: Java rolls it from husk spawns (10%); Bedrock gives it a weight of 25 on its own.
- Looting: Affects rotten flesh in Java only.
- Panic: Bedrock camel husks never panic when hit. Java camel husks do not panic while mobs are steering them.
- Mounting: Bedrock stands up the instant you mount; Java waits until you move forward.
- Rabbit’s foot drop: The 50% rabbit’s foot from the husk rider is a Bedrock feature.

Notable Bugs & Quirks
- Friendly Mobs sound category: Undead mounts use the Friendly Mobs slider instead of Hostile Creatures. Mojang marked this as working as intended (MC-304386).
- Double “entity” sound IDs: The Java sit and stand sounds are registered as
entity.entity.camel_husk.sitand.stand. - Leftover baby hitbox: In Java 26.1 snapshots, camel husks with an Age value below -24000 kept the old baby hitbox and animation speed (MC-306195, fixed).
- Bedrock saddle sound: Equipping a saddle plays the horse “breathes” subtitle, and removing it with shears has no subtitle at all.
Advancements/Achievements
- Monster Hunter (Java advancement / Bedrock achievement): Killing a camel husk counts, since it is classed as a monster.
- Monsters Hunted (Java): The camel husk is on the required list. If you are chasing this one, you now need to kill a mob you probably wanted to ride.
- It Spreads: Kill it near a sculk catalyst; it drops XP, so it qualifies.
- Adventure: Killing any mob counts, camel husk included.
- Mob Kabob: Hit five mobs in one spear charge. A jockey stack gives you three targets in one spot.
- Take Aim, A Throwaway Joke, Arbalistic, Over-Overkill: Generic mob advancements that the camel husk can count toward.
Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia
- Key art star: Two camel husks appear in the official Mounts of Mayhem key art, and the release date artwork showed them as enemies.
- Nickname: Plenty of players just call it the “zombie camel,” which is not wrong. It even carries the
zombiesentity tag in Java. - The yeet subtitle: The official closed caption for its dash reads “Camel Husk yeets.” Someone at Mojang had a good day.
- Triple identity: It is one of the few mobs that is an animal, a monster, and undead at the same time.
- Sun-proof undead: Unlike almost every other undead mob in the Overworld, it does not burn in daylight.
