Rabbit

The rabbit is one of those mobs that exists in a weird limbo between “adorable pet” and “completely useless distraction.” They hop around the Overworld looking cute, raiding your carrot farms when you are not paying attention, and getting absolutely annihilated by every predator in a three-chunk radius. Rabbits are small, fast, and fragile — the glass cannons of the passive mob world, except without the cannon part.

Do not let their size fool you into thinking they are insignificant. Rabbits drop rabbit hide, raw rabbit, and the ever-elusive rabbit’s foot — a key ingredient for potions of Leaping. They are also one of the few mobs with biome-dependent fur colors, a secret Easter egg skin, and a hidden hostile variant that references one of the greatest comedy films ever made. There is more going on with this tiny hopper than most players realize.

Whether you are trying to breed them, farm them for resources, or just wondering why they keep disappearing from your taiga base (spoiler: wolves), this guide covers everything you need to know about the Minecraft rabbit from spawning mechanics to combat strategies against its unhinged cousin, the Killer Bunny.

Overview / Quick Stats

Attribute Details
Name Rabbit
Namespaced Entity ID minecraft:rabbit
Alignment Passive (Hostile for Killer Bunny variant — Java Edition only)
Dimensions / Hitbox Adult: 0.4 blocks wide × 0.5 blocks tall
Baby: 0.2 blocks wide × 0.25 blocks tall
Health 3 (1.5 hearts)
Armor 0
Base Damage 0 (normal rabbit). Killer Bunny variant:
  • Easy: 5 (2.5 hearts)
  • Normal: 8 (4 hearts)
  • Hard: 12 (6 hearts)

Killer Bunny is exclusive to Java Edition.

Movement Speed ~1.0–2.2 blocks/second (hopping, varies). When fleeing, rabbits move significantly faster — roughly matching player sprint speed.
Knockback Resistance 0
Follow / Detection Range 8 blocks (follows player holding carrots, golden carrots, or dandelions). Killer Bunny detects players within 16 blocks.
Experience Drop 1–3 XP orbs on kill. 1–7 XP orbs on successful breeding.
Spawn Location Overworld — deserts, flower forests, taigas, snowy biomes, meadows, groves, snowy slopes, and old growth taigas (Java). Bedrock adds frozen oceans, frozen rivers, and snowy beaches.
First Added Java: 1.8 (14w27a)
Bedrock: 0.13.0
Last Major Change 1.9 (Java) — Rabbits made significantly smaller. Combat Update reduced their size from nearly chicken-sized to the tiny model used today.

Appearance

Rabbits are among the smallest mobs in the game. The adult model is just 0.4 blocks wide and 0.5 blocks tall, making them shorter than a slab. They have a compact rectangular body, tall upright ears, a stubby tail, and small legs that animate in a hopping motion. Baby rabbits are half the size of adults, which makes them approximately the size of an endermite — blink and you will miss them.

There are six natural fur colors that correspond to the biome where the rabbit spawns. Brown, black, and salt-and-pepper rabbits appear in flower forests, taigas, and meadows. White and black-and-white rabbits show up in snowy biomes like snowy taigas, snowy plains, groves, and snowy slopes. Creamy (golden) rabbits are exclusive to deserts. The fur color is purely cosmetic — it does not affect behavior, drops, or stats.

Two special skins exist outside the normal six. The Toast skin is a black-and-white patterned rabbit activated by naming any rabbit “Toast” with a name tag. This Easter egg was added as a memorial to a real missing rabbit belonging to a player’s girlfriend. The Killer Bunny has pure white fur with horizontal blood-red eyes, visually distinct from the normal white rabbit whose eyes are vertical and dark. The Killer Bunny also spawns with a nameplate reading “The Killer Bunny” above its head.

Behavior & AI

  • Idle Movement: Rabbits hop around aimlessly when undisturbed. They do not walk like other mobs — they use a unique hopping animation and movement pattern that makes them erratic and unpredictable to hit.
  • Fleeing: Rabbits flee from players (unless the player is holding a carrot, golden carrot, or dandelion), wolves, foxes, and stray cats. Their flee speed is fast enough to match or nearly match player sprint speed, which is why chasing a rabbit on foot feels like an exercise in futility.
  • Following: Rabbits follow a player within 8 blocks if the player holds a carrot, golden carrot, or dandelion. They will ignore nearby threats while focused on following, which is how most players lure them into pens.
  • Crop Raiding: If mobGriefing is set to true, rabbits actively seek out and eat mature carrot crops. In Java Edition they only eat fully grown carrots (growth stage 7). In Bedrock Edition they eat carrots at growth stage 2 or higher. Each nibble reduces the growth stage by one. Leave your carrot farm unprotected near a rabbit and you will come back to bare dirt.
  • Despawning: Rabbits are passive mobs and do not despawn naturally in Java Edition. In Bedrock Edition, passive mobs can despawn under certain conditions if they are far from players. Named rabbits and rabbits that have been interacted with (bred, fed, leashed) never despawn.
  • Daylight: Rabbits are active during the day. They can spawn and exist at night but do not have any special nocturnal behavior.
  • Water: Rabbits avoid water and cannot swim effectively. They float and bob in water but will try to exit it immediately. They can drown if trapped in deep water.
  • Jumping: Rabbits can jump up 1 block naturally through their hop movement. They cannot jump over fences (1.5 blocks tall), making fences effective containment.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Normal Rabbits: Normal rabbits have no attacks whatsoever. They are entirely passive and will never fight back, even when cornered. Their only defense is running away, which they do enthusiastically.
  • Killer Bunny Attack (Java Edition only): The Killer Bunny lunges at targets with a melee attack dealing 5/8/12 damage on Easy/Normal/Hard. It leaps toward the target in a spider-like movement pattern, making it surprisingly hard to track. After being struck, it briefly retreats before returning to attack.
  • Killer Bunny Detection: The Killer Bunny detects players within a 16-block radius and prioritizes them. If no player is nearby, it targets foxes and wolves, including tamed wolves.
  • Thorns Immunity: The Killer Bunny is immune to the Thorns enchantment. Your thorns armor will not damage it on contact.
  • Status Effects: Rabbits do not inflict or are naturally immune to any status effects. They can receive effects from splash/lingering potions like any other mob.

Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth

  • Food Items: Carrots, golden carrots, and dandelions. All three work identically for breeding and growth acceleration.
  • Taming: Rabbits cannot be tamed. This was possible in very early snapshots but was removed before the full 1.8 release. You can lead them with the food items above, but they will never become a loyal companion. They are fundamentally unreliable.
  • Breeding: Feed two adult rabbits any of the three food items to trigger breeding. The baby inherits the fur type of one parent (47.5% chance each) or has a 5% chance of receiving the fur type matching the current biome. Breeding has a 5-minute cooldown per parent. Successful breeding drops 1–7 XP.
  • Baby Growth: Baby rabbits take 20 minutes (one full Minecraft day) to grow into adults. Feeding them carrots, golden carrots, or dandelions reduces the remaining growth time by 10% per feeding.
  • Killer Bunny Breeding: Yes, you can breed Killer Bunnies with regular rabbits or with each other. The offspring has a chance of being a Killer Bunny. This is one of the most chaotic things the game allows you to do willingly.
  • Leash: Rabbits can be attached to leads. Given how fast they are and how small they are, this is genuinely the most practical way to move them.

Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms

Natural Fur Variants

  • Brown (RabbitType: 0): Spawns in flower forests, taigas, meadows, and old growth taigas. The “default” rabbit.
  • White (RabbitType: 1): Spawns in snowy taigas, snowy plains, groves, and snowy slopes. White fur with dark eyes.
  • Black (RabbitType: 2): Spawns in flower forests, taigas, and meadows. Solid black fur.
  • Black & White (RabbitType: 3): Spawns in snowy biomes including snowy taigas and snowy plains. Spotted black and white pattern.
  • Gold / Creamy (RabbitType: 4): Exclusive to deserts and desert variants. The most common rabbit color overall because deserts have no natural predators for them.
  • Salt & Pepper (RabbitType: 5): Spawns in flower forests, taigas, and meadows. Brown-grey mottled fur.

Toast (Easter Egg)

  • Activation: Name any rabbit “Toast” using a name tag. The fur texture changes to a unique black and white pattern distinct from the normal black-and-white variant.
  • Origin: Added as a memorial to a missing rabbit belonging to the girlfriend of Reddit user xyzen420. Developer Ryan Holtz implemented the texture.
  • Breeding Note: Toast rabbits that breed produce offspring with colors matching the parents’ original (pre-rename) fur type, not the Toast pattern. The Toast skin is cosmetic and tied to the name tag, not genetics.
  • Killer Bunny + Toast: If you rename a Killer Bunny to “Toast,” the texture changes to the Toast skin, but the rabbit remains hostile. A wolf in sheep’s clothing — literally.

The Killer Bunny (Java Edition Only)

  • Spawning: Does not spawn naturally. Must be summoned with /summon rabbit ~ ~ ~ {RabbitType:99}.
  • Appearance: Pure white fur with horizontal blood-red eyes. Spawns with the nameplate “The Killer Bunny.”
  • Behavior: Hostile toward players within 16 blocks, foxes, and wolves (including tamed wolves). Uses a spider-like lunge attack. Retreats briefly when struck, then resumes attacking.
  • Reference: A direct reference to the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It was previously named “The Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog” in earlier snapshots.
  • History: The Killer Bunny originally spawned naturally in early 1.8 snapshots. Jens Bergensten (Jeb) decided to remove natural spawning because he felt hostile mobs should look like monsters, not cute animals.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Overworld surface
Biomes Java: Deserts, flower forests, taigas, old growth taigas, snowy taigas, snowy plains, meadows, groves, snowy slopes
Bedrock: Same as Java, plus frozen oceans, frozen rivers, and snowy beaches. Also spawns up to 3 kits in flower forests.
Y-Level Range Surface level, any Y where valid spawn blocks exist
Light Level Java: 9 or higher
Bedrock: 7 or higher
Required Block Grass block, snow block, snow layer, or sand
Group Size Java: 1 adult + 1–2 babies (groups of 2–3)
Bedrock: 1 adult + 1–2 babies; up to 3 kits in flower forests
Weight Relatively low spawn weight compared to other passive mobs. Rabbits are uncommon in most biomes, especially in taigas where wolves and foxes quickly kill them after spawning.
Edition Differences Bedrock allows rabbit spawning in frozen aquatic biomes (frozen oceans, frozen rivers, snowy beaches) where Java does not. Java includes old growth taigas. Bedrock light level requirement is 7+ vs. Java’s 9+.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Wolves: Wild wolves actively hunt and kill rabbits on sight. Tamed wolves will not attack rabbits unless the player hits the rabbit first. This is why rabbit populations in taigas tend to be nonexistent — the wolves get them within seconds of spawning.
  • Foxes: Foxes also hunt and kill rabbits. Combined with wolves, taiga biomes are basically rabbit deathtraps.
  • Stray Cats: Stray (untamed) cats will chase and kill rabbits. Tamed cats do not.
  • Killer Bunny vs. Wolves/Foxes: The Killer Bunny will attack wolves and foxes if no player is nearby. These mobs fight back, often resulting in mutual destruction. A tamed wolf will be attacked by the Killer Bunny, which can lead to some very unpleasant surprises.
  • Carrot Farms: Rabbits will eat and destroy mature carrot crops if mobGriefing is true. Fence off your carrot farms or turn off the gamerule if you are farming near rabbit-spawning biomes.
  • Boats & Minecarts: Rabbits can be placed in boats and minecarts, which is an effective way to transport them. They are too erratic on leads over long distances.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Rabbit Hide 0–1 Guaranteed Roll Maximum increased by 1 per level of Looting (max 0–4 with Looting III). Four rabbit hides craft into one leather.
Raw Rabbit Java: 1
Bedrock: 0–1
Guaranteed Roll Java guarantees 1 raw rabbit; Bedrock rolls 0–1. Maximum increased by 1 per level of Looting (Java max 1–4, Bedrock max 0–4 with Looting III). Drops as cooked rabbit if killed while on fire.
Rabbit’s Foot 1 10% Only drops when killed by a player or tamed wolf. Chance increases by 3% per level of Looting (max 19% with Looting III). Used to brew potions of Leaping.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Rabbit’s Foot: The primary reason to farm rabbits. Rabbit’s foot is a brewing ingredient for the potion of Leaping, which grants Jump Boost. The 10% base drop rate (19% with Looting III) means you need to kill a decent number of rabbits to get a reliable supply.
  • Rabbit Hide: Four rabbit hides combine in a 2×2 crafting grid to make one leather. This is an alternative leather source if cows are scarce, but the conversion rate is not great.
  • Raw Rabbit / Cooked Rabbit: Raw rabbit restores 3 hunger points (1.5 drumsticks). Cooked rabbit restores 5 hunger points (2.5 drumsticks) and 6 saturation. Cooked rabbit is also an ingredient in rabbit stew, which restores 10 hunger points (5 drumsticks) and 12 saturation — one of the best food items in the game, but not stackable.
  • Rabbit Stew Recipe: Crafted from cooked rabbit + carrot + baked potato + any mushroom + bowl. An excellent food source but the inability to stack it limits its practicality for long expeditions.
  • Farm Design Basics: A simple rabbit farm uses a fenced area with rabbits bred using carrots. For automated drops, push rabbits into a lava blade or campfire kill chamber using water streams. Keep the breeding area and kill area separate. Use hoppers to collect drops.
  • Farm Rates: Rabbit farms are slow compared to other mob farms. The 5-minute breeding cooldown and only 1 baby per breeding cycle limit throughput. These are supplemental farms, not primary resource generators.
  • Predator-Proofing: If building a rabbit farm in a taiga or similar biome, use solid walls or double-height fences. Foxes can jump over single fences, and they will absolutely massacre your rabbit population overnight.

Commands & NBT

Common /summon examples for spawning rabbits with specific properties:

/summon rabbit ~ ~ ~ {RabbitType:0}

Spawns a brown rabbit (Java Edition).

/summon rabbit ~ ~ ~ {RabbitType:99}

Spawns the Killer Bunny (Java Edition only). It appears with the nameplate “The Killer Bunny.”

/summon rabbit ~ ~ ~ {RabbitType:1,Age:-24000}

Spawns a baby white rabbit (Java Edition). The negative Age value keeps it as a baby for 24,000 ticks (20 minutes).

/summon rabbit ~ ~ ~ {CustomName:'"Toast"'}

Spawns a rabbit with the Toast Easter egg skin (Java Edition).

/summon rabbit ~ ~ ~ minecraft:as_baby

Spawns a baby rabbit (Bedrock Edition).

  • Notable NBT Keys (Java Edition):
  • RabbitType — Integer (0–5 for normal variants, 99 for Killer Bunny). Values above 5 (except 99) render as brown rabbit texture.
  • MoreCarrotTicks — Set to 40 when a carrot crop is eaten. Decreases by 0–2 per tick. Functionally unused; exists as an internal cooldown tracker.
  • Age — Negative values indicate a baby; counts up toward 0 to become adult. Set to -24000 for a full growth cycle.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Tags (Java): Rabbits are tagged under #minecraft:rabbits. The Killer Bunny variant is categorized under hostile creature sound events despite sharing the rabbit entity ID.
  • Gamerule — mobGriefing: Controls whether rabbits eat carrot crops. Set to false to prevent crop destruction. This also affects other mob griefing behaviors like Endermen picking up blocks and Creeper explosions.
  • Loot Table Path: minecraft:entities/rabbit — Can be customized via datapacks to modify drop rates, add new drops, or adjust Looting scaling.
  • Spawn Conditions: Rabbit spawning can be modified through custom biome JSON files in datapacks by editing spawner data for the creature category in relevant biomes.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Killer Bunny Damage Scaling: Easy: 5 damage (2.5 hearts). Normal: 8 damage (4 hearts). Hard: 12 damage (6 hearts). Only relevant in Java Edition.
  • Killer Bunny Availability: Java Edition only. The Killer Bunny does not exist in Bedrock Edition in any form — it cannot be summoned, spawned, or accessed.
  • Raw Rabbit Drop Difference: Java guarantees at least 1 raw rabbit per kill. Bedrock rolls 0–1, meaning you can kill a rabbit in Bedrock and get zero meat. This is one of those small differences that actually matters if you are relying on rabbits for food.
  • Crop Eating Threshold: Java rabbits only eat fully mature carrot crops (growth stage 7). Bedrock rabbits eat carrots at growth stage 2 or higher, making them more destructive to farms in Bedrock.
  • Light Level for Spawning: Java requires light level 9+. Bedrock requires light level 7+.
  • Biome Availability: Bedrock allows rabbit spawning in frozen oceans, frozen rivers, and snowy beaches. Java includes old growth taigas but not the frozen aquatic biomes.
  • Flower Forest Spawning: Bedrock spawns up to 3 kits in flower forests, while Java uses the standard 1 adult + 1–2 baby group size.

Sounds & Audio

  • Ambient: entity.rabbit.ambient — Soft, quiet squeaking. Barely audible unless you are standing right next to the rabbit.
  • Hurt: entity.rabbit.hurt — A brief, higher-pitched squeak.
  • Death: entity.rabbit.death — The internal file is named bunnymurder.ogg, which is one of the greatest asset filenames in the entire game.
  • Jump: entity.rabbit.jump — Plays on each hop. Subtle and easy to miss in normal gameplay.
  • Killer Bunny Attack: entity.rabbit.attack — Plays when the Killer Bunny lands a hit (Java Edition only).
  • Sound Category: Regular rabbits use the Friendly Creatures sound category. The Killer Bunny uses the Hostile Creatures category, meaning its sounds are controlled by a different volume slider in audio settings.

History & Major Changes

  • Java 14w27a (1.8 snapshot): Rabbits added to the game. Initially larger and tameable. The Killer Bunny (originally “The Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog”) could spawn naturally.
  • Java 14w33a: Killer Bunny removed from natural spawning. Renamed to “The Killer Bunny.”
  • Java 14w34a: Toast Easter egg skin added.
  • Java 1.8: Full release of rabbits. Taming removed. All current breeding and behavior mechanics established.
  • Java 1.9 (Combat Update): Rabbits made significantly smaller. The model shrank from approximately chicken-sized to the current tiny dimensions. This is when they became the hard-to-hit nuisances we know today.
  • Bedrock 0.13.0: Rabbits added to Bedrock Edition.
  • Java 1.17: Rabbits now spawn in meadow biomes as part of the Caves & Cliffs update.
  • Java 1.18: Rabbits added to grove and snowy slopes biomes.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Tiny Hitbox: The rabbit’s hitbox is notoriously small — 0.4 × 0.5 blocks. Combined with their erratic hopping movement, hitting them with a sword or arrow in survival mode without aim assistance is genuinely challenging. Many players resort to using a Looting sword and cornering them against a wall.
  • Predator Wipeout: In taigas, rabbits often spawn only to be immediately killed by wolves or foxes. You can spend significant time in a taiga biome and never see a living rabbit because they get hunted to extinction within seconds.
  • Toast + Killer Bunny: Renaming a Killer Bunny “Toast” changes its appearance but not its hostility. New players sometimes discover this the hard way when a cute black-and-white rabbit lunges at their face for 8 damage.
  • MoreCarrotTicks NBT: This NBT tag is set when a rabbit eats a carrot crop and counts down internally, but it has no actual gameplay effect. It exists in the code as a leftover from development.

Advancements / Achievements

  • “The Parrots and the Bats” (Java): Breed two animals. Breeding rabbits counts toward this advancement.
  • “Two by Two” (Java): Breed all breedable animal types. Rabbits are one of the required animals. This is the advancement that forces completionists to actually track down a pair of rabbits.
  • “A Furious Cocktail” / “How Did We Get Here?” (Java): These advancements require the Leaping effect, which comes from potions brewed with rabbit’s foot.
  • “Monster Hunter” (Java): Killing the Killer Bunny counts toward this advancement since it is classified as a hostile mob.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Monty Python Reference: The Killer Bunny is a direct homage to the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog from Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975). The movie scene features a seemingly harmless white rabbit that brutally attacks the Knights of the Round Table. Minecraft’s version captures that energy perfectly — an unassuming little critter that will absolutely wreck you.
  • Toast Memorial: The Toast Easter egg skin is named after a real missing rabbit belonging to the girlfriend of Reddit user xyzen420. Developer Ryan Holtz added it as a tribute. It is one of the more genuinely touching Easter eggs in the game.
  • Death Sound Filename: The rabbit’s death sound file is internally named bunnymurder.ogg. Someone at Mojang had a sense of humor when naming that asset.
  • Original Mob Concept: Rabbits were one of the earliest mobs considered for Minecraft’s Java Edition Classic, but negative community feedback at the time delayed their addition by several years. They finally arrived in 1.8.
  • Rabbit Stew: Rabbit stew is one of the best food items in the game by raw hunger and saturation values, but its inability to stack makes it impractical for most situations. It exists in a strange space where everyone knows it is good but almost nobody uses it.
  • Size Reduction: When rabbits were first added, they were roughly the size of chickens. The 1.9 Combat Update shrunk them dramatically, making them much harder to hit and much easier to lose track of. Some players still miss the larger version.
