Wandering Trader

The wandering trader is the closest thing Minecraft has to a door-to-door salesman — except instead of knocking, he materializes out of thin air in the middle of your base at the worst possible time, accompanied by two llamas who have zero respect for your fence layout. He sells plants, dyes, and the occasional rare item for emeralds, then vanishes like he was never there.

Unlike regular villagers, the wandering trader has no home, no profession block, no bed, and no loyalty to any village. He spawns near you, hangs around for 40 to 60 minutes, and then despawns whether you traded with him or not. You cannot keep him. You cannot trap him. He is, in every sense, a temporary visitor — and a weirdly divisive one at that. Some players love him for bringing biome-specific items they would otherwise have to travel thousands of blocks to find. Others see him as a free pair of leads and nothing more.

Love him or hate him, the wandering trader is actually the only renewable source of sand, red sand, coral blocks, and small dripleaves in the game. So maybe do not stab him on sight. At least check the trades first.

Appearance

The wandering trader uses the same general model as a villager — same proportions, same oversized nose, same crossed-arm pose. But the outfit is a dead giveaway that this is not your average turnip farmer.

He wears a dark blue hooded robe with red and gold trim, which looks like something a merchant would throw on before a long caravan trip through the desert. Underneath the robe, you can spot a green shirt, brown pants, a belt with a gold buckle, and a red face scarf or mask covering the lower half of his face. He also wears sandals, because apparently block worlds do not require proper footwear.

The wandering trader does not have baby or adult variants. He always spawns as a full-sized adult and always looks the same regardless of biome or edition. There are no visual differences between Java and Bedrock versions of this mob.

Behavior & AI

  • Wandering: After spawning, the wandering trader prefers to stay within 16 blocks of its initial spawn point. It wanders aimlessly, occasionally looking at nearby players — basically the Minecraft equivalent of window shopping in reverse.
  • Passive Response to Attack: If a player hits the wandering trader, it panics and runs away. It will never fight back. Not even a little. Its llamas, however, will absolutely spit on you.
  • Avoidance AI: The wandering trader actively avoids zombies (all variants), illagers (all variants), and vexes, maintaining at least 8 blocks of distance. Unlike regular villagers, a wandering trader killed by a zombie does not become a zombie villager.
  • Invisibility Potion Usage: At dusk (around tick 12000), the wandering trader drinks a Potion of Invisibility to protect itself from hostile mobs overnight. At dawn, it drinks milk to remove the effect. If attacked by a hostile mob’s projectile or magic damage, it may also drink an invisibility potion defensively.
  • Despawn Timer: The wandering trader despawns after 48,000 ticks (40 minutes) of being loaded. In Bedrock Edition, a random timer between 2,400 and 3,600 seconds (40–60 minutes) is used instead. Ticks spent with the trade UI open do not count toward this timer.
  • Cannot Be Kept: Name tags do not prevent despawning. Placing the trader in a boat or minecart does not prevent despawning. In Java Edition, even riding another mob as a passenger does not prevent despawning. He is leaving and nothing you do will stop him.
  • Unloaded Chunks: If the wandering trader moves into an unloaded chunk or enters another dimension, the despawn timer freezes until the chunk is loaded again.
  • Doors: Like villagers, wandering traders can open and close wooden doors.
  • Persistence: Only one naturally spawned wandering trader can exist in loaded chunks at a time. Additional traders can exist in unloaded chunks.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Attack: None. The wandering trader has zero offensive capability. It does not deal damage under any circumstances.
  • Trading: Right-click (or the use button) on the wandering trader to open its trade interface. It offers items in exchange for emeralds only — it does not buy anything from the player in Java Edition. In Bedrock Edition, the trader also has two buy-from-player trades.
  • Trade Slots: The wandering trader has 6 random trade offers in Java Edition (5 ordinary + 1 special) and 6 in Bedrock Edition (selected differently from Java). Trades cannot be unlocked or restocked. Once a trade is used up, it is gone forever for that trader.
  • Invisibility: The wandering trader drinks a Potion of Invisibility (8 minutes) at nightfall and removes it with milk at dawn. It also drinks invisibility defensively when attacked by hostile mob projectiles or magic. The leads and llamas remain visible even while the trader is invisible, which somewhat defeats the purpose.
  • Llama Aggro Broadcast: When the trader is attacked by a player, it broadcasts an anger signal to its leashed trader llamas within 10 blocks, causing them to spit at the attacker. The trader itself still just runs.
  • No XP From Trading: In Java Edition, trading with a wandering trader rewards zero experience. In Bedrock Edition, trades do reward some experience, though the trader itself never levels up.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Within 48 blocks of a player in the Overworld. In Bedrock Edition, also near a claimed village bell.
Biomes Any Overworld biome. The wandering trader is not biome-restricted and can spawn in deserts, oceans, mountains, or the middle of your wheat farm.
Y-Level Range Any valid Y-level with enough space. Can spawn underground if the player is deep enough.
Light Level Any. Light level does not affect wandering trader spawning.
Required Block Needs a solid spawnable block with 2 blocks of air above it. Also needs space for the 2 trader llamas.
Group Size Always 1 wandering trader + 2 trader llamas.
Spawn Cycle A timer starts at 24,000 ticks (20 minutes) when the world is created. Each time it reaches zero, a spawn attempt is made and the timer resets. The first attempt has a 2.5% chance of success, increasing by 2.5% per failure, capping at 7.5%. On average, it takes about 14.3 Minecraft days for a wandering trader to spawn.
Edition Differences Java: Controlled by /gamerule doTraderSpawning and /gamerule doMobSpawning. Spawn target is a random player.
Bedrock: Controlled by /mobevent minecraft:wandering_trader_event. Also prioritizes spawning near village bells. Using spawn eggs or /summon always spawns llamas with the trader.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Trader Llamas: Always spawns with 2 trader llamas leashed by leads. If the leads break or the trader dies, the llamas do not despawn and can be tamed. Wild llamas that spot the leashed trader llamas may form a caravan and follow them around — which is hilarious when a chain of six llamas starts marching through your village.
  • Zombie Immunity: Unlike regular villagers, the wandering trader does not convert into a zombie villager when killed by a zombie. He just dies. No second chances.
  • Lightning Immunity (Conversion): Unlike regular villagers, the wandering trader does not transform into a witch when struck by lightning. He takes damage like normal but does not change mob type.
  • Illager Avoidance: The wandering trader flees from all illager types and vexes, keeping at least 8 blocks of distance. During raids, the trader will attempt to escape the area entirely.
  • Iron Golems: Iron golems will defend wandering traders from hostile mobs just as they would defend regular villagers.
  • Boats & Minecarts: The wandering trader can be placed in boats and minecarts, but this does not prevent despawning. In Java Edition, placing a boat near a leashed trader llama can break the lead.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Lead Up to 2 Guaranteed Drops when the trader dies or when the llamas are separated from the trader. Leads drop at the llama positions, not the trader.
Milk Bucket 1 8.5% Java Edition only. Drops if killed while holding the milk bucket or before finishing drinking it. Chance increases by 1% per level of Looting.
Potion of Invisibility 1 8.5% Drops if killed while holding the potion or before finishing drinking it. Chance increases by 1% per level of Looting.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Renewable Sand Source: The wandering trader is the only renewable source of sand and red sand in the game. This matters enormously in superflat worlds, Skyblock challenges, and any long-term survival world where you have dug up every beach in render distance.
  • Renewable Coral: The wandering trader is the only renewable source of coral blocks. Since coral dies when placed outside water and cannot be farmed, the trader is the only way to get more once you have mined your local reef dry.
  • Small Dripleaf: This is another item only renewably available through the wandering trader. Bone meal on big dripleaf does not produce small dripleaf — you need the trader for that.
  • Biome-Specific Items Without Travel: Need jungle saplings but spawned in a tundra? The wandering trader can sell them to you without requiring a 10,000-block hike. This applies to most tree saplings, flowers, seeds, and biome-exclusive plants.
  • Lead Farm: Every wandering trader spawns with 2 leads. Kill the trader or break the leads, and that is a free pair of leads every spawn cycle. Leads require slimeballs to craft, so this is genuinely useful early on.
  • AFK Wandering Trader Farm: Players can build farms in ocean areas to funnel wandering traders through Nether portals for collection. The design involves a large lit platform over an ocean with a central collection pit and water streams leading to a Nether portal. Because only one wandering trader can exist in loaded chunks at a time, the portal sends the current one away so a new one can spawn. These farms are not fast, but they are the only way to automate access to the trader’s items.
  • Trade Rebalance Experiment: With the Villager Trade Rebalance data pack enabled (available as an experimental feature), the wandering trader receives an expanded and restructured trade pool, making it significantly more useful.

Commands & NBT

Summoning a wandering trader with commands is straightforward. Here are some useful examples:

Basic summon:

/summon minecraft:wandering_trader ~ ~ ~

Summon a wandering trader that will not despawn (Java Edition — set DespawnDelay to a very high number):

/summon minecraft:wandering_trader ~ ~ ~ {DespawnDelay:2147483647}

Summon with a custom name (Java Edition):

/summon minecraft:wandering_trader ~ ~ ~ {CustomName:'{"text":"Gerald"}',CustomNameVisible:1}

Bedrock Edition summon with spawn event (spawns with llamas):

/summon minecraft:wandering_trader ~ ~ ~ minecraft:spawned

Bedrock Edition summon without despawning (use managed event):

/summon minecraft:wandering_trader ~ ~ ~ minecraft:managed

Notable NBT keys (Java Edition):

  • DespawnDelay — Integer. The number of ticks remaining before forced despawn. The trader despawns when this reaches 1. Set to a very high value to effectively prevent despawning.
  • Offers — Compound. Contains the trade list. Generated when the trade UI is first opened.
  • Offers.Recipes — List of compound tags, each representing one trade offer.
  • Offers.Recipes[].maxUses — Integer. How many times this specific trade can be used before it locks.
  • Offers.Recipes[].rewardExp — Boolean (1/0). Whether this trade drops XP orbs. Naturally set to 1 for wandering traders in Java Edition despite giving 0 XP in practice.
  • Inventory — List. Up to 8 item slots. Currently unused by the wandering trader’s AI but can be populated via commands.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Type Tag (Java): #minecraft:raiders — The wandering trader is NOT in this tag. It is part of no hostile entity tags.
  • Gamerule (Java): doTraderSpawning — Controls whether wandering traders attempt to spawn. Default: true. Set to false to disable spawning entirely.
  • Gamerule (Java): doMobSpawning — Also must be true for the wandering trader to spawn.
  • Mob Event (Bedrock): /mobevent minecraft:wandering_trader_event — Controls trader spawning in Bedrock Edition.
  • Loot Table (Java): minecraft:entities/wandering_trader — Can be overridden with a datapack to customize drops.
  • Trade Table (Java): Trade pools are defined in data and can be modified via datapack at minecraft:wandering_trader in the trade files.
  • Trade Table (Bedrock): Located at behavior_packs/vanilla/trading/wandering_trader_trades.json.
  • Entity Type Family (Bedrock): wandering_trader, mob. When despawning, also gains wandering_trader_despawning.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Difficulty Scaling: The wandering trader’s behavior does not change across Easy, Normal, and Hard difficulty. It has the same health, same despawn timer, and same trades regardless of difficulty setting. The only indirect effect is that hostile mobs are more dangerous on Hard, which means the trader is more likely to get killed by zombies before you can trade with it.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Trade Count: In Java Edition, the trader has 6 trade slots: 5 random ordinary trades and 1 random special trade. In Bedrock Edition, the trader has 6 random trades selected from a combined pool, plus 2 trades where the trader buys items from the player.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — XP From Trading: Java Edition gives zero XP for trading with the wandering trader. Bedrock Edition gives some XP per trade.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Spawn Control: Java uses /gamerule doTraderSpawning. Bedrock uses /mobevent minecraft:wandering_trader_event.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Llama Spawning: In Bedrock Edition, using spawn eggs or /summon always spawns llamas with the trader. In Java Edition, /summon creates the trader alone unless you manually spawn the llamas.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Hitbox: Java Edition uses a height of 1.95 blocks. Bedrock uses 1.9 blocks.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Milk/Potion Drops: The milk bucket and invisibility potion drops are Java Edition only.

Sounds & Audio

The wandering trader has a distinct voice — similar to a villager’s “hrm” sounds but with a slightly different pitch and tone that makes it immediately recognizable. In Java Edition, these sounds use the Friendly Creatures sound category.

  • Ambient / Idle (Java): entity.wandering_trader.ambient
  • Hurt (Java): entity.wandering_trader.hurt
  • Death (Java): entity.wandering_trader.death
  • Trade Accept (Java): entity.wandering_trader.yes
  • Trade Decline (Java): entity.wandering_trader.no
  • Reappear (Java): entity.wandering_trader.reappeared — Plays when the trader becomes visible again after invisibility wears off.
  • Disappeared (Java): entity.wandering_trader.disappeared — Plays when the trader drinks an invisibility potion.
  • Drink Milk (Java): entity.wandering_trader.drink_milk
  • Drink Potion (Java): entity.wandering_trader.drink_potion
  • Bedrock Sound Files: mob/wandering_trader/idle1-5.fsb, mob/wandering_trader/no1-5.fsb, mob/wandering_trader/yes1-2.fsb, mob/wandering_trader/reappeared1-2.fsb

History & Major Changes

  • Java 18w44a (1.14 snapshot): Wandering trader entity added to the game. Could be spawned with commands but did not yet spawn naturally.
  • Java 19w05a: Wandering traders now spawn naturally in the world with trader llamas.
  • Java 19w05a-19w13a: Various trade pool adjustments and AI fixes during the 1.14 snapshot cycle.
  • Java 1.14 (Village & Pillage): Full release. Wandering trader included as a core feature of the update.
  • Bedrock 1.10.0: Wandering trader added to Bedrock Edition.
  • Bedrock 1.11.0: Wandering trader trade system refined, spawn mechanics adjusted.
  • Java 1.17 (Caves & Cliffs Part 1): Small dripleaf added to the wandering trader’s trade pool.
  • Java 1.17.1: Pointed dripstone and rooted dirt added to wandering trader trades.
  • Java 1.20 (Trails & Tales): Trade Rebalance experimental data pack introduced, offering an expanded trade pool for the wandering trader with biome-specific structure.
  • Java 1.20.2 / Bedrock 1.20.30: Further Trade Rebalance experiment refinements. Wandering traders can now sell items like logs and offer buy-from-player trades in the experiment.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Invisible But Not Hidden: When the wandering trader drinks an invisibility potion, the leads connecting to its llamas remain visible. You can literally follow the floating leads to find the invisible trader. Stealth was never this mob’s strong suit.
  • Spawning Underground: If a player spends a lot of time mining underground, the wandering trader can and will spawn in a cave. Nothing quite like hearing villager sounds 40 blocks below the surface.
  • Spawning on Water: On island worlds or ocean biomes, the trader sometimes spawns on the water surface, with the llamas awkwardly bobbing alongside. It is technically valid but looks absurd.
  • Despawn Ignores Name Tags: Unlike nearly every other mob in the game, name tags do not prevent the wandering trader from despawning. This is intentional, not a bug — but it surprises nearly everyone the first time.
  • Lead Duplication (Historic): In older versions, certain interactions with the trader’s llamas could duplicate leads. Most of these have been patched, but they were a popular “feature” in early 1.14.

Advancements / Achievements

  • What a Deal! (Java): Advancement triggered by successfully trading with a villager or wandering trader. Part of the Adventure tab. ID: minecraft:adventure/trade.
  • What a Deal! (Bedrock): Achievement that also triggers when trading with a wandering trader. Rewards the player with a small amount of Gamerscore.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Minecraft Dungeons: The wandering trader appears in Minecraft Dungeons as an NPC merchant at the player’s camp, selling artifacts and gear. Same blue robe, same energy, very different inventory.
  • Community Reputation: The wandering trader is one of the most polarizing mobs in the game. A significant portion of the player base views the trader as useless — a source of leads and nothing else. Others, particularly challenge players and superflat survivors, consider it one of the most important mobs in the game. The truth depends entirely on your playstyle.
  • The “Free Leads” Meme: Killing the wandering trader for its leads has become a running joke in the community. Multiple meme formats exist showing players immediately attacking the trader on sight without checking trades.
  • Concept Art: Early concept art for the wandering trader showed a mob wearing a hat and using a pre-Texture Update villager design. The final blue-robed look was chosen to make the trader visually distinct from regular villagers at a distance.
  • Only Passive Potion User: The wandering trader and the witch are the only mobs in the game that drink potions. However, the wandering trader is the only passive mob that does so — it drinks for survival rather than combat.
  • Llama Caravan Formation: If wild llamas spot the trader’s leashed llamas, they may form a caravan and follow them around. This can result in surprisingly long chains of llamas marching through the world, which never stops being funny.
