The Zombie Horse spent twelve years as the game’s worst-kept secret. It was coded into the game back in 2013, fully modeled, fully animated, and completely unobtainable without commands. Players knew it existed the way you know there is one more cookie in the jar you are not allowed to touch.
That changed with the Mounts of Mayhem drop. Zombie horses now spawn naturally at night on plains and savannas, carrying a zombie rider armed with an iron spear. Together they form a zombie horseman, which is exactly as unpleasant to meet in the dark as it sounds.
Here is the good news. The horse itself never attacks you. Knock the zombie off its back and you get a passive, tameable undead mount with solid average speed. Just keep it out of the sun, because it burns like every other rotting thing in this game.
Overview / Quick Stats
| Attribute | Details |
|---|---|
| Name | Zombie Horse |
| Namespaced Entity ID | minecraft:zombie_horse |
| Alignment | Passive on its own. Hostile when ridden by a zombie, because the rider controls its pathfinding. Classified as undead, and counts as a monster for mob cap purposes. |
| Dimensions/Hitbox | Java: Adult 1.3965 × 1.6 blocks, Baby 0.6982 × 0.8 blocks Bedrock: Adult 1.4 × 1.6 blocks, Baby 0.7 × 0.8 blocks |
| Health | 25 HP (12.5 hearts). Fixed value, not randomized like a regular horse. |
| Armor | 0 by default. Can wear any horse armor once tamed. |
| Base Damage | None. The zombie horse never attacks. All damage in a zombie horseman encounter comes from the zombie rider and its iron spear. |
| Movement Speed | Java: 9.22–12.29 blocks/second (average ~10.75) Bedrock: 8.85–11.87 blocks/second (average ~10.36) |
| Jump Height | Jump strength 0.5–0.7, clearing roughly 1.7–3.1 blocks (average ~2.4 blocks). |
| Knockback Resistance | 0 |
| Follow/Detection Range | The horse has no targeting of its own. When ridden, it follows whatever the zombie rider targets. |
| Experience Drop | 1–3 XP when killed by a player or tamed wolf. Babies drop nothing. |
| Spawn Location | Overworld grass blocks in plains, sunflower plains, snowy plains, savanna, savanna plateau, and windswept savanna, in darkness, as a zombie horseman. |
| First Added | Java: 1.6.1 (13w16a, 2013) Bedrock: Pocket Edition 0.15.0 (2016) |
| Last Major Change | Java: 1.21.11 (Mounts of Mayhem, December 9, 2025) Bedrock: 1.21.130 (Mounts of Mayhem, December 9, 2025) |
Appearance
- Model: Same body shape as a regular horse — long blocky torso, four legs, a tall neck, and a boxy head. Mounts of Mayhem gave it a refreshed design, and the Bedrock version was made symmetrical during testing.
- Color: A washed-out, moldy green with a dark mane. Patches of bone poke through the flesh in places, which is a nice touch if you enjoy your mounts looking slightly decomposed.
- Eyes: Dark and hollow, like a zombie that has seen too many nights on the plains.
- Baby vs. Adult: Babies are half-size (0.8 blocks tall) with the same texture. They never spawn naturally — only from spawn eggs (20% chance) or commands.
- Equipment Visuals: Saddles and every tier of horse armor render on the model, including netherite horse armor added in the same drop.
- Animations: Rears up, swishes its tail, and lowers its head as if grazing. Like other horses, the grazing animation never actually eats the grass.
Behavior & AI
- Targeting/Aggro: The zombie horse has no attack and no target of its own. When a zombie is riding it, the zombie steers, so the horse charges straight at you anyway. Kill or dismount the rider and the horse goes back to wandering like nothing happened.
- Idle Behavior: Wanders, stops, rears, and pretends to graze. It behaves like any wild horse.
- No Panic: Unlike most passive mobs, it does not run away when you hit it. It just stands there and takes it.
- Daylight: Burns in direct sunlight like other undead. Horse armor fully protects it, and since horse armor has no durability, it never wears out doing this job.
- Water: Can breathe underwater, and unlike skeleton horses, it floats instead of sinking. Horses, including zombie horses, no longer sink when ridden by a swimming player as of Mounts of Mayhem.
- Fall Damage: Safe for falls up to 6 blocks, and takes reduced damage beyond that. A rider takes the same fall damage the horse does.
- Persistence/Despawn: Untamed zombie horses despawn like hostile mobs until a player interacts with them. After the first interaction, they become persistent and stop counting toward any mob cap. Tamed ones never despawn.
- Regeneration: Slowly heals on its own over time, about 1 HP every 45 seconds on average in Java.
- Zombie Sieges: In Java, zombie horsemen are never created by a siege, but a naturally spawned one nearby will join in and act like any other zombie.
Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects
- Attacks: None from the horse. The real threat is the zombie rider, which uses an iron spear with reach and charge damage that scales with the horse’s speed. A zombie horseman closing distance at full gallop is the part you need to respect.
- Undead Traits: Harmed by Instant Health, healed by Instant Damage, immune to Poison and Regeneration, and takes extra damage from Smite.
- Wither Neutral: The Wither ignores it, like all undead.
- Armadillos: Armadillos treat it as a threat and roll up into their shells.
- Dismounting the Rider: A spear charge at high enough speed can knock the zombie clean off the horse. Mounted jousting against a zombie horseman is one of the best ways to split them up.
- Jump Boost: Has no effect on zombie horses.
Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth
- Taming: Same as a regular horse. Mount it with an empty hand, get bucked off, and keep trying until hearts appear. The rider must be gone first.
- Food: Red mushrooms are its only food. Feeding one heals 3 HP, and holding one will tempt the horse to follow you.
- Breeding: Not possible. Every zombie horse you own is one you pulled out of the night yourself.
- Baby Growth: Babies exist only from spawn eggs or commands. They cannot be saddled or ridden.
- Equipment: Two slots — saddle and horse armor. Shears remove equipment one piece at a time, armor first, then saddle.
- Chest Capacity: None. It cannot carry a chest.
- Leash Behavior: Can be leashed as long as no zombie is riding it. A leashed zombie horse will swim after you if you get in a boat. It cannot ride in boats itself, but it can ride in minecarts.
- Riding: Needs 2.75 blocks of clearance for horse and rider. Uses the charged jump bar, auto-climbs one-block slopes, and can go through Nether and End portals with you on its back.
Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms
Zombie Horseman
- What It Is: A zombie holding an iron spear, riding a zombie horse. This is the only way zombie horses spawn naturally.
- Rider Gear: The spear may be enchanted, and the zombie occasionally spawns wearing armor, which may also be enchanted.
- Rider Rules: Only regular zombies become horsemen. Husks and zombie villagers do not.
- Bonus Drop: The zombie rider has a chance to drop a red mushroom — conveniently, the one thing its horse eats.
Baby Zombie Jockey (Bedrock Only)
- How It Forms: In Bedrock, 15% of nearby baby zombies, husks, or drowned may hop onto an untamed adult zombie horse.
- Rarity: Uncommon, since it needs a wild zombie horse and a baby zombie in the same place.
Baby Zombie Horse
- How to Get One: 20% of zombie horse spawn egg uses produce a baby. Never spawns naturally.
- Limits: Cannot be saddled, armored, or ridden until it grows up.
Spawning
| Spawn Condition | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Overworld, at night or in any dark enough spot. Mostly on the surface, since grass blocks are rare underground. |
| Biomes | Plains, Sunflower Plains, Snowy Plains, Savanna, Savanna Plateau, Windswept Savanna. Bedrock also lists Ice Spikes, but see Edition Differences. |
| Y-Level Range | Any height with a valid grass block. Practically, the surface. |
| Light Level | Java: Block light 0 Bedrock: Below 7 |
| Required Block | Grass block |
| Group Size | Java: 1 Bedrock: 1 |
| Weight | 5 in each listed biome. In Java, that works out to 5/520, or about 0.96% of monster spawn attempts. |
| Edition Differences | Java spawns riderless zombie horses on Peaceful, unlike other monsters. Bedrock always spawns them with a rider. Bedrock’s Ice Spikes entry never actually works, because that biome’s surface is snow blocks, not grass. |
Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs
- Iron and Snow Golems: Golems ignore the zombie horse itself but will go after its zombie rider.
- Villages: A zombie horseman spawning near a village during a Java zombie siege will join the siege.
- Armadillos: Roll up when a zombie horse gets close.
- Wither: Will not target it.
- Parrots: In Java, parrots can imitate zombie horse sounds like they do for other hostile mobs.
- Boats and Minecarts: Cannot ride boats. Can ride minecarts.
- Rider Restrictions: Zombies spawned in rider configuration will only ride zombie horses, so you will not see a horseman zombie wander off and climb onto a chicken.
Drops & Loot
| Item | Quantity | Chance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rotten Flesh | 2-3 | Guaranteed Roll | Each level of Looting adds up to 1 more, for 2-6 with Looting III. Same in Java and Bedrock. |
| Saddle | 1 | 100% if equipped | Only drops if the horse was wearing one. |
| Horse Armor | 1 | 100% if equipped | Drops whatever armor tier the horse was wearing. |
| Experience | 1-3 XP | Player or tamed wolf kill | Baby zombie horses drop no items and no experience. |
Player Uses & Farming
- Transportation: The main reason to want one. Java speeds range from about 9.2 to 12.3 blocks per second. A regular horse can go higher at the top end, but a regular horse can also roll a painfully slow floor. Every zombie horse is at least decent.
- Night Travel: Put horse armor on it and the sun stops being a problem. Without armor, a daytime ride turns into a slow roast for your mount.
- Jousting: A fast mount makes spear charges hit harder. A good zombie horse and a spear are a natural pairing from the same update.
- Taming Tip: Kill the rider, then tame or leash the horse right away. Interacting with it makes it persistent, so it will not despawn while you go get a saddle.
- Healing Tip: Carry red mushrooms or Harming splash potions. Regular healing potions hurt it because it is undead.
- Farming: There is no reason to build a dedicated farm. Zombie horses cannot be bred, the spawn weight is tiny, and rotten flesh is easier to get from almost anywhere else.

Tame— 1 or 0. Whether the horse is tamed.Owner— UUID of the player who tamed it. Has no effect on behavior.Temper— 0 to 100. Higher values make it easier to tame.EatingHaystack— Whether it is currently playing the grazing animation.Bred— Legacy horse flag. Zombie horses cannot breed, so it does nothing useful here.Age— Negative values make a baby.equipment.saddle/equipment.body— The saddle and horse armor slots.

Difficulty & Edition Differences
- Peaceful: Java still spawns zombie horses on Peaceful, just without riders. Bedrock does not, because its horses always spawn with a zombie.
- Easy/Normal/Hard: The horse’s stats do not change with difficulty. The rider’s damage and gear chances do, following normal zombie rules.
- Speed: Java ranges from ~9.22 to ~12.29 blocks/second. Bedrock ranges from ~8.85 to ~11.87 blocks/second.
- Light Level: Java needs light level 0. Bedrock allows anything below 7, so horsemen can appear in slightly brighter spots.
- Jockeys: Only Bedrock lets baby zombies, husks, and drowned hop onto wild zombie horses.
- Hitbox: Java is 1.3965 blocks wide. Bedrock rounds to 1.4.

History & Major Changes
- Java 1.6.1 (13w16a): Zombie horses added alongside regular horses, with models based on DrZhark’s Mo’ Creatures horses. Unobtainable in survival.
- Java 1.7.2 (13w36a): The
/summoncommand made them reachable without third-party tools. - Java 1.9 (15w38b): Became undead mobs, picking up Smite weakness and inverted healing.
- Java 1.11: Split into their own entity ID,
zombie_horse, instead of being a horse type value. - Bedrock PE 0.15.0: Zombie horses added to Bedrock (then Pocket Edition), still commands and spawn eggs only.
- September 27, 2025: Announced for survival at Minecraft LIVE as part of Mounts of Mayhem, with a new design.
- Java 25w41a (1.21.11 snapshot): Natural spawning as zombie horsemen, 25 HP, variable speed and jump, burning in daylight, taming, 2-3 rotten flesh drops, and inclusion in Best Friends Forever.
- Java 1.21.11 / Bedrock 1.21.130 (December 9, 2025): Mounts of Mayhem released. Zombie horses no longer sink when ridden while swimming, and netherite horse armor arrived.
Notable Bugs & Quirks
- Missing Half-Heart: The health bar only shows 12 hearts even though it has 12.5. The last half-heart is there, you just cannot see it.
- Ice Spikes Ghost Spawn: Bedrock’s spawn rules include Ice Spikes, but they never spawn there because the biome has no grass blocks.
- Monster With Friendly Sounds: It counts as a monster for spawning and advancements but plays its sounds through the Friendly Mobs volume slider.
- Lifted by Leads: A player riding a zombie horse that is being pulled on a lead gets dragged along, and can even be lifted into the air.
Advancements/Achievements
- Best Friends Forever (Java): Taming a zombie horse counts.
- Monster Hunter (Java and Bedrock): Killing a zombie horse counts as killing a hostile monster.
- Monsters Hunted (Java): The zombie horse is on the required list. Yes, you have to kill one. Tame the second one you find.
- It Spreads (Java and Bedrock): Kill one near a sculk catalyst. It drops XP, so it qualifies.
- General Mob Advancements: Adventure, Take Aim, A Throwaway Joke, Mob Kabob, Arbalistic, and Over-Overkill can all be earned on a zombie horse.
Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia
- For over twelve years, the zombie horse was the most famous mob that did not naturally exist. The community asked for survival spawning constantly until Mojang finally delivered in 2025.
- A zombie horse was quietly hinted in a photo in the 1.21.8 article, about two months before the official reveal.
- The April Fools snapshot 20w14∞ let zombie horses spawn naturally in some randomly generated dimensions — the only survival spawning they got before Mounts of Mayhem.
- DrZhark, creator of Mo’ Creatures, is credited in the game’s end credits for his work on horses, including this one.
- The baby zombie horse is technically still an unused variant. It only exists because of spawn eggs.
