The Parched is what happens when a skeleton spends too long in the desert and decides sunscreen is for quitters. It is a desert-only skeleton variant wrapped in sandy rags, and it does the one thing regular skeletons never learned to do: it stands in full noon sun and keeps shooting at you.
Every arrow it fires is tipped with Weakness. That means one bad exchange in the dunes and your diamond sword suddenly hits like a pool noodle for the next 30 seconds. It is not the toughest mob in the game, but it punishes the classic desert habit of sprinting into a fight and swinging.
The Parched arrived in the Mounts of Mayhem game drop (Java Edition 1.21.11 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.130) alongside the Camel Husk, and the two of them come as a package deal. The good news: once you learn its rhythm, it is also the easiest renewable source of Arrows of Weakness in the game.

Appearance
- Model: Uses the standard skeleton model — thin limbs, boxy skull, bow in hand. If you can recognize a skeleton, you can recognize the outline.
- Color and texture: The bones are a darker, muddy tan instead of bleached white. Strips of sandy, parchment-like cloth are wrapped around the body and head, like a mummy that got halfway through getting dressed.
- Face: Pale sandy-yellow eyes and a dark gray mouth. At night against the sand, the eyes are often the first thing you notice.
- Vibrant Visuals (Bedrock): With Vibrant Visuals turned on, the Parched’s eyes are emissive and glow in the dark.
- Baby form: None. There are no baby Parched, which is honestly a mercy.
- Animations: Same as a skeleton — arms raise and the bow draws back when it aims, and it strafes while shooting.
Behavior & AI
- Targeting: Attacks players and iron golems on sight, just like a regular skeleton, and fights back against anything that hits it. It also scares armadillos into rolling up.
- Combat pathing: Keeps its distance and strafes sideways while drawing its bow. It does not rush you unless it has swapped its bow for a sword.
- Daylight: Does not burn in sunlight. This is the whole point of the mob. Daytime desert travel is no longer the safe window it used to be.
- Wolves: Runs away from both wild and tamed wolves, like every other skeleton variant. Bring a dog.
- Water: Cannot swim and sinks, but it does not drown. Unlike the Husk, it does not convert into anything after sitting underwater.
- Powder snow: Takes freezing damage and never converts into a Stray. It just freezes. Like the Bogged, it is a dead end for conversions.
- Picking up items: Some Parched spawn able to pick up weapons, shields, and armor. In Java they grab items they happen to walk over. In Bedrock they actively walk toward dropped gear.
- Persistence and despawn: Despawns like any hostile mob unless it picks up an item or gets a name tag. A Parched wearing your old chestplate is staying forever.
- Turtle eggs: Seeks out and tramples turtle eggs, same as other undead.
Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects
- Arrows of Weakness: Every shot is an extended Arrow of Weakness. A hit applies Weakness for 30 seconds, which in Java cuts your melee damage by 4 (2 hearts) per hit.
- Fire rate: Slower than a skeleton. It fires once every 3.5 seconds on Easy and Normal, and every 2.5 seconds on Hard. That gap between shots is your window to close in.
- Attack range: Starts shooting from up to 15 blocks away. Beyond that, it walks toward you until it has a shot.
- Melee: Only if it picks up a sword or another non-bow weapon. It then deals 2 HP on Easy and Normal, 3 HP on Hard, plus the weapon bonus.
- Weakness immunity: Immune to Weakness itself. This barely matters since arrows are not affected by Weakness anyway, but it means you cannot turn its own ammo against it.
- Undead traits: Hurt by Instant Health, healed by Instant Damage, immune to Poison and Regeneration, and takes extra damage from Smite. The Wither ignores it.
- Shields: A raised shield blocks its arrows completely, and blocking one earns the “Not Today, Thank You” advancement. It can carry a shield in its offhand but never actually blocks with it.
Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms
Camel Husk Jockey
- How it spawns: When a Husk spawns naturally in a spot with room for a Camel Husk, it has a 10% chance to spawn as a Camel Husk jockey. The Husk rides in front with a spear, and a Parched sits in the back seat.
- Why it hurts: You get melee spear pokes and Weakness arrows from the same fast-moving platform. Both riders ignore sunlight, so this can happen at any hour.
- Counterplay: Take out the Parched first. Its 16 HP goes down fast, and once it is gone you are only dealing with the spear.
Spider Jockey (Bedrock Only)
- How it spawns: Spiders and cave spiders that spawn in deserts have a 1% chance to be a spider jockey. In that case, the rider has an 80% chance to be a Parched.
- Java: Does not happen naturally. Desert spider jockeys in Java use regular skeletons.
Armored and Enchanted Parched
- Gear: Can spawn wearing armor and holding an enchanted bow, which scales with regional difficulty. A Power bow on a Hard-mode Parched is a problem.
- Left-handed: In Java, 5% spawn holding the bow in their left hand. Purely cosmetic.
- Halloween (Java only): On October 31, a Parched has a 22.5% chance to spawn wearing a carved pumpkin and a 2.5% chance to wear a jack o’lantern.
Spawning
| Spawn Condition | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Overworld desert surface only. Follows the Husk’s spawn rules, so it never spawns in caves. |
| Biomes | Desert |
| Y-Level Range | No fixed range. It spawns wherever the surface is, as long as the block has a direct view of the sky. |
| Light Level | Block light level 0, at night or during thunderstorms |
| Required Block | Any valid spawnable block (usually sand or sandstone) with 2 blocks of clear space above and direct sky access |
| Group Size | Java: 4 Bedrock: 1–2 per the spawn rules table (some sources list 2–4) |
| Weight | Java: 50 out of 515 total desert monster weight (about 9.71% of monster spawns) Bedrock: 40 |
| Edition Differences | In Java, Parched replace 50% of skeleton spawns in deserts. In Bedrock, they replace about one-third. Only Bedrock uses Parched as desert spider jockey riders. |
Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs
- Wolves: The Parched flees from wolves, and wolves hunt skeleton variants on their own. A tamed pack is the lazy player’s desert escort.
- Iron golems: Desert village golems will fight any Parched that wanders in. The Parched shoots back, so expect a few Weakness arrows to hit your golem.
- Creepers: In Java, a Creeper killed by a Parched arrow drops a random music disc, because the Parched counts as a skeleton for that rule.
- Friendly fire: Like all skeletons, a stray arrow can hit another mob and start a fight. Husks and Parched occasionally end up brawling.
- Breezes (Bedrock): Parched do not retaliate against Breezes, and Breezes do not retaliate against them — a leftover from the skeleton trial chamber rules.
- Parrots: In Java, parrots can imitate Parched sounds. Great for a jump scare in your own base.
- Camel Husks: Rides as the second passenger in a Camel Husk jockey. In Bedrock, it can no longer be forced onto a Camel Husk.
- Boats and minecarts: Can be pushed into boats and minecarts like any skeleton-sized mob, which is handy for moving one or trapping it.
Drops & Loot
| Item | Quantity | Chance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bone | 0–2 | Guaranteed Roll | Each Looting level raises the maximum by 1 (0–5 with Looting III). Average rises from 1 to 2.5 in Java and from 1 to 2 in Bedrock. |
| Arrow | 0–2 | Guaranteed Roll | Regular arrows. Each Looting level raises the maximum by 1 (0–5 with Looting III). |
| Arrow of Weakness | 0–1 (Java) 0–1, up to 0–4 with Looting III (Bedrock) |
50% base | Only drops when killed by a player (or a tamed wolf in Java). In Java, Looting raises the chance to 75%, 87.5%, and 91.67% but never more than 1 arrow. In Bedrock, the chance stays at 50% but Looting adds 1 to the maximum per level. |
| Bow | 1 | 8.5% | Naturally spawned bow. Drops damaged and may be enchanted. Chance rises to 9.5%, 10.5%, and 11.5% with Looting I–III. |
| Armor | 1 per piece | 8.5% | Naturally spawned armor follows the same 8.5% chance (up to 11.5% with Looting III). Anything it picked up off the ground drops 100% of the time with its original durability. |
| Skeleton Skull | 0 | Never | Unlike a regular skeleton, a Parched does not drop a head when killed by a charged Creeper. |
Player Uses & Farming
- Cheap zombie villager cures: This is the big one. Shoot an Arrow of Weakness at a zombie villager, then feed it a golden apple. No brewing stand, no Nether trip, no fermented spider eyes.
- Bone meal: Bones from a Parched work exactly like skeleton bones. Farm them for crops, flowers, and dyes.
- Free arrows: Both regular arrows and Weakness arrows stack up fast if you kill Parched by hand with a Looting sword.
- Farm principle — sky access: The Parched only spawns where it can see the sky. A classic dark-room cave farm will never produce one. You need an open-top spawning platform in a desert biome.
- Farm principle — the kill: Weakness arrows only drop on player kills (or tamed wolves in Java). Design the farm to drop mobs to low health, then finish them yourself with a Looting III sword.
- Farm principle — competition: Husks share the same spawn rules, and zombies, spiders, and creepers still spawn in deserts. Light up nearby surface areas and caves so they do not eat your mob cap.
- Expected rates: Modest and night-only. Parched are a slice of desert spawns rather than the main event, so treat a farm as a steady trickle of Weakness arrows, not a flood.
- Edition caveat: In Bedrock, mobs spawn 24–44 blocks from the player, so the platform has to sit inside that ring around your AFK spot. Java’s spawn sphere is much larger and less picky.

Difficulty & Edition Differences
- Fire rate by difficulty: One shot every 3.5 seconds on Easy and Normal, and every 2.5 seconds on Hard in Java. Bedrock matched the Hard-mode rate in 26.30; before that, including 26.0, Bedrock used 3.5 seconds on every difficulty.
- Arrow damage: Java damage depends on arrow speed and difficulty. Bedrock rolled a random 3–5 HP until 26.40, when it switched to the same velocity-based system.
- Spawn share: Replaces 50% of desert skeletons in Java versus about 33% in Bedrock.
- Group size: Groups of 4 in Java; smaller groups in Bedrock.
- Jockeys: Bedrock-only spider jockey rider. Both editions have the Camel Husk jockey.
- Item pickup: Java Parched pick up gear they walk over. Bedrock Parched actively go looking for it, and will only swap their bow for a sword.
- Weakness arrow drop: Java allows tamed wolf kills and caps at 1 arrow. Bedrock requires a player kill but can drop up to 4 with Looting III.
- Hitbox: 1.99 blocks tall in Java versus 1.9 blocks in Bedrock.

History & Major Changes
- Java 25w44a: Parched added, alongside the Camel Husk, as part of the Mounts of Mayhem game drop.
- Java 25w46a: Parched became immune to Weakness. The leg texture was shifted by 1 pixel.
- Java 1.21.11-pre1: Parched can no longer pick up spears.
- Java 1.21.11: Full release in December 2025.
- Bedrock Preview 1.21.130.24: Parched added. In this preview, a Parched would stop everything — including attacking you — to run toward any Camel Husk within 16 blocks and ride it.
- Bedrock Preview 1.21.130.26: Parched stopped hunting for Camel Husks to ride.
- Bedrock Preview 1.21.130.27: Added as desert spider jockey riders. Base damage lowered from 3 HP to 2 HP to match Java. Can no longer be forced onto a Camel Husk.
- Bedrock 26.0 (Preview 26.0.23): Parched can no longer pick up spears.
- Bedrock 26.30 (Preview 26.30.20): Hard and Hardcore fire rate changed to one shot every 2.5 seconds, matching Java.
- Bedrock 26.40 (Preview 26.40.27): Arrow damage now depends on arrow velocity and difficulty instead of a random range.
Notable Bugs & Quirks
- The pointless immunity: Parched are immune to Weakness, but they fight with arrows, which Weakness does not affect. It is a rule that exists mostly to be a trivia answer.
- The camel obsession (fixed): Early Bedrock previews let Parched ignore players entirely to chase down a Camel Husk to ride. It was removed before release.
- No stray, no skeleton: Freeze it in powder snow and it just takes damage. Drown it and nothing happens. It is the one desert undead that refuses to transform.
- Shield decoration: A Parched that picks up a shield wears it in its offhand but never blocks with it.
- Headless: No skull drop from charged Creepers, even though it is a skeleton in every other way.
Advancements/Achievements
- Monster Hunter: Killing a Parched counts as killing a hostile monster (both editions).
- Monsters Hunted (Java): The Parched is one of the 41 monsters you need to kill for this challenge. If you are chasing it, you now need a desert trip.
- Sniper Duel (Bedrock achievement): Killing a Parched with an arrow from 50 or more blocks away counts.
- Not Today, Thank You (Java): Block one of its arrows with a shield.
- It Spreads: Kill a Parched near a sculk catalyst, since it drops experience.
- General mob advancements: Adventure, Take Aim, A Throwaway Joke, Arbalistic, Mob Kabob, and Over-Overkill can all be earned on a Parched.
Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia
- Mob family: The Parched is the second new skeleton variant in recent years, following the swamp-dwelling Bogged. Both share the slower fire rate and tipped-arrow gimmick.
- Official artwork: Mojang’s Mounts of Mayhem promo art shows Parched riding Camel Husks and fighting the characters Zuri and Noor.
- Dev diaries: The Parched appears in Mojang’s “THE HORROR OF MINECRAFT” video.
- Plural: The plural is still “Parched.” One Parched, five Parched, far too many Parched.
- Design logic: It follows the Husk template exactly — desert variant, darker tan palette, sunlight immunity, no cave spawns.
