The phantom is Minecraft’s way of punishing you for being productive. You stayed up all night mining diamonds, exploring caves, and building your base — and the game’s response is to send screaming undead sky manta rays to divebomb your face. That is the phantom in a nutshell: a flying, hostile, undead mob that spawns above players who have not slept in a bed for three or more in-game days.
Phantoms were added to the game after winning the Mob Vote at MINECON Earth 2017, beating out three other candidates to earn the title “Monster of the Night Skies.” The community voted for this thing on purpose. They circle overhead at night, leaving trails of gray smoke, and then swoop down to bite you with all the grace of a bat that just discovered it hates you personally. They burn in sunlight like other undead mobs, so if you can survive until dawn, the problem solves itself — assuming you do not get knocked off a cliff first.
Phantoms drop phantom membranes, which are used to repair elytra at an anvil and to brew potions of Slow Falling. So as annoying as they are, you will eventually find yourself intentionally skipping sleep just to farm them. The irony is not lost on anyone.

Appearance
The phantom looks like something that crawled out of the ocean, decided it hated the concept of ground, and grew wings out of spite. Its body is a flat, wide, manta ray-like shape rendered in teal and blue tones with patches of exposed bone visible along its wings and spine. The texture is darker on top and lighter on the underside, giving it a ghostly, deep-sea vibe despite being an airborne mob.
Its eyes glow bright green — the same eerie green that old Enderman eyes used to have — and they are easily the most visible part of the phantom at night. When it flies, gray smoke particles trail from the tips of its wings, making it look like a small haunted airplane leaving contrails across the night sky.
The phantom has no visible mouth (the developers scrapped it because it looked too much like a muppet — their words, not mine). Its wings flap in a smooth, rhythmic animation that gives the mob a surprisingly elegant feel for something that exists solely to ruin your evening. There are no baby phantoms, no gender variants, and no natural size differences — every phantom you encounter in survival is the same size 0 variant.
Behavior & AI
- Targeting: Phantoms exclusively target the player who triggered their spawn by not sleeping. They do not attack other mobs, villagers, or animals. They do not attack players who are sleeping in a bed, even if the player is exposed.
- Circling Pattern: When idle, phantoms fly in a roughly circular orbit 15–25 blocks horizontally and 24–35 blocks vertically from the target player. This circling behavior makes them hard to hit with ranged weapons because they rarely hold still.
- Swoop Attack: Every 10–20 seconds, a phantom breaks from its orbit and dives toward the player in a straight-line swoop. If it connects, it deals damage and knockback, then flies back up to resume circling. If the player hits the phantom during its dive before it lands the bite, it immediately aborts the attack and retreats upward.
- Daylight Behavior: Phantoms burn in direct sunlight, just like zombies and skeletons. They ignite even if given helmets through commands — sunlight protection through equipment does not work for phantoms.
- Water Interaction (Java): Phantoms do not drown in Java Edition. They can fly through water without taking suffocation damage.
- Water Interaction (Bedrock): In Bedrock Edition, a phantom trapped underwater will attempt to fly to the surface and will drown after about 20 seconds if it cannot escape.
- Cat Avoidance: Phantoms try to stay at least 16 blocks away from cats. In Bedrock Edition, they also avoid ocelots. If a tamed cat is near the player, it will hiss at attacking phantoms, effectively scaring them off. This is one of the best passive defenses against phantoms in the game.
- Low Ceiling Limitation: Phantoms cannot attack players who are in spaces with only a 2-block gap between the floor and ceiling. They will attempt to swoop but fail to reach the player. Standing under a tree canopy or inside a low-ceiling room effectively neutralizes them.
- Persistence & Despawning: Phantoms follow standard hostile mob despawn rules. They despawn if the player is more than 128 blocks away, and they burn away at dawn regardless. Named phantoms (via name tag) do not despawn but will still burn in sunlight.
- Invisibility: Under the Invisibility effect, the phantom’s body disappears, but its glowing green eyes and smoke particles remain visible.
Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects
- Swoop Bite: The phantom’s only attack. It dives from altitude toward the player in a straight line, dealing melee damage on contact. The dive inflicts knockback, which can push players off ledges, cliffs, or builds — often more dangerous than the damage itself.
- Damage Scaling (Java): In Java Edition, naturally spawned phantoms (size 0) deal 6 base damage, modified by difficulty. The formula is 6 + Size for the base, but since natural phantoms are always size 0, the base is always 6. Difficulty scaling reduces this to 2 on Easy/Normal and 3 on Hard.
- Damage Scaling (Bedrock): Bedrock phantoms deal 6 base damage before difficulty scaling, resulting in 4 (Easy), 6 (Normal), and 9 (Hard). This makes Bedrock phantoms significantly more threatening.
- No Status Effects: Phantoms do not inflict any status effects on hit. The damage and knockback are the entire package.
- Undead Immunities: As undead mobs, phantoms are immune to Poison and Regeneration effects. They are harmed by Instant Health potions and healed by Instant Damage potions. The Wither ignores them entirely.
- Smite Vulnerability: The Smite enchantment deals bonus damage to phantoms. A Smite V diamond sword can two-shot or even one-shot a phantom if you land a critical hit during its dive.
- Shield Interaction: Blocking with a shield negates the phantom’s swoop damage. Since their attack is melee, shields are fully effective.
Spawning
| Spawn Condition | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Overworld, 20–34 blocks above the target player (Java). In Bedrock, spawns in a 21×15×21 cube centered 28 blocks above the player. |
| Biomes | All Overworld biomes, including Mushroom Fields and the Void. Phantom spawning is completely biome-independent — one of the only hostile mobs that can spawn in Mushroom Fields. |
| Y-Level Range | Java: The player must be above sea level (Y=63) and have no opaque block above them. Phantoms spawn 20–34 blocks above the player. Bedrock: The player must have no light-blocking block above them. Spawn cube is centered 28 blocks up. |
| Light Level | Java: Must be nighttime or during a thunderstorm (internal sky light level is checked). Bedrock: Light level of 7 or less at the spawn location. |
| Required Block | No block with light opacity above 0 can be directly above the player. Leaves (light opacity 2) block phantom spawns. Glass (opacity 0) does not. |
| Group Size | Java Easy: 1–2 Java Normal: 1–3 Java Hard: 1–4 Bedrock Easy: 1–2 Bedrock Normal: 1–3 Bedrock Hard: 1–4 |
| Weight | Phantoms do not use the standard mob spawn weight system. They spawn based on the player’s “Time Since Last Rest” statistic (minimum 72000 ticks / 3 in-game days). Spawn attempts occur roughly every 60–120 seconds. The number of phantoms per group increases with consecutive sleepless nights. |
| Edition Differences | Phantoms count toward the hostile mob cap in both editions but do not adhere to it when spawning — they can spawn even when the cap is full. In Java, spawn frequency scales with the number of sleepless nights. The “Time Since Last Rest” statistic resets when the player enters a bed or dies. |
Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs
- Cats: Tamed cats are the phantom’s natural counter. Phantoms attempt to stay at least 16 blocks away from cats, even if the cat is inside a building. Having a cat nearby while AFKing outdoors at night is one of the simplest ways to prevent phantom attacks.
- Ocelots (Bedrock only): In Bedrock Edition, phantoms also flee from ocelots using the same 16-block avoidance radius. This does not apply in Java Edition.
- Iron Golems: Iron golems do not target phantoms, and phantoms do not target golems. They exist in separate worlds of mutual indifference.
- The Wither: The Wither ignores phantoms entirely because they are undead. Phantoms will not be targeted by Wither skulls.
- Turtle Eggs: Despite being a flying mob, phantoms can trample and destroy turtle eggs if they land on top of them. This is an edge case, but it has caught players off guard on beach builds.
- Boats & Minecarts: Phantoms can get stuck in boats, which is both hilarious and a viable trapping strategy. A phantom caught in a boat at dawn will burn in sunlight while trapped.
- Scaffolding: Phantoms can fly up through scaffolding but cannot fly down through it. This quirk can be exploited for farm designs.
Drops & Loot
| Item | Quantity | Chance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phantom Membrane | 0–1 | Guaranteed Roll | Only drops when killed by a player or tamed wolf. Looting increases the maximum by 1 per level (max 0–4 with Looting III). Does not drop if killed by fire, other mobs, or environmental damage. |
| Experience Orbs | 5 XP | Guaranteed | Only drops when killed by a player or tamed wolf. |
Player Uses & Farming
- Elytra Repair: Each phantom membrane restores 25% durability to an elytra when combined in an anvil. Before you get Mending on your wings, phantom membranes are your only repair option. Carry a few extras whenever you fly long distances.
- Potion of Slow Falling: Brew a phantom membrane with an awkward potion to create a Potion of Slow Falling (1:30 duration). This potion prevents all fall damage and slows your descent, making it invaluable for End exploration, Ender Dragon fights, and building at extreme heights.
- Phantom Farm Design: The simplest phantom farm exploits their swoop behavior. Build a platform high in the sky with a 2-block-tall gap for the player to stand under (so phantoms cannot reach you), with an open area where phantoms dive into a killing mechanism — typically trident killers or lava blades. The player must not sleep for 3+ days to trigger spawns, and having no blocks above the platform ensures maximum spawn rates.
- Key Build Principles: No opaque blocks above the AFK spot. A tamed cat should NOT be present (it repels phantoms). The farm should kill phantoms via player damage or tamed wolf for drops to register. Campfire smoke or water streams can funnel phantoms into kill chambers.
- Expected Rates: A well-designed phantom farm can produce several stacks of membranes per hour on Hard difficulty, since spawn group sizes are larger and spawn attempts happen more frequently the longer you stay awake.
- Edition Caveats: Bedrock phantom farms require different spacing due to the 21×15×21 spawn cube mechanic. Java farms rely on the player being above Y=63 with open sky. Always test in your specific edition.
Commands & NBT
Here are some useful commands for working with phantoms:
/summon minecraft:phantom ~ ~10 ~
Summons a default phantom 10 blocks above you.
/summon minecraft:phantom ~ ~10 ~ {Size:5}
Summons a larger phantom (Java only). Size ranges from 0 to 64. Larger phantoms deal more damage (6 + Size) but always have 20 HP regardless of size. Naturally spawned phantoms are always size 0.
/summon minecraft:phantom ~ ~10 ~ {Passengers:[{id:"minecraft:drowned",HandItems:[{id:"minecraft:trident",Count:1b}]}]}
Summons a phantom jockey — a drowned riding a phantom holding a trident. This does not occur naturally but it is every bit as terrifying as it sounds.
/gamerule doInsomnia false
Disables phantom spawning entirely. The nuclear option for anyone who just wants them gone.
Notable NBT keys (Java Edition):
Size— Integer (0–64). Controls the phantom’s visual size and damage output. Damage = 6 + Size. Default is 0 for naturally spawned phantoms.AX, AY, AZ— The coordinates the phantom circles around when idle. Resets to a point above the target player after each swoop. Defaults to the spawn location if unset.
Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks
- Entity Type Tags (Java):
#minecraft:undead,#minecraft:sensitive_to_smite. The phantom is included in all undead-related tags, which means any datapack targeting undead mobs will affect phantoms automatically. - Gamerule:
doInsomnia— when set tofalse, phantoms will not spawn at all. This is the cleanest way to disable them without affecting other game mechanics. Default istrue. - Loot Table Path:
minecraft:entities/phantom— can be modified via datapacks to change drops, add custom loot, or adjust Looting scaling. - Entity Type Family (Bedrock):
phantom, undead, monster, mob. Used for behavior pack filtering and command selectors.
Difficulty & Edition Differences
- Damage Gap: The most dramatic difference between Java and Bedrock is phantom damage. On Bedrock Easy, phantoms deal 4 damage (2 hearts) — which is already more than Java Hard’s 3 damage (1.5 hearts). On Bedrock Hard, they deal a punishing 9 damage (4.5 hearts) per swoop. Bedrock players take phantom encounters significantly more seriously.
- Group Size Scaling: On Java, group sizes are 1–2 (Easy), 1–3 (Normal), and 1–4 (Hard). Bedrock mirrors these group sizes.
- Spawn Mechanics: Java spawns phantoms 20–34 blocks above the player with a taxicab distance of up to 10 blocks to the side. Bedrock uses a 21×15×21 spawn cube centered 28 blocks above. Both require the player to have gone 3+ in-game days without sleeping.
- Drowning: In Bedrock, phantoms trapped underwater drown after about 20 seconds. In Java, they do not drown at all.
- Ocelot Avoidance: Bedrock phantoms flee from ocelots in addition to cats. Java phantoms only fear cats.
- Cat Avoidance Distance: Phantoms maintain a 16-block distance from cats in both editions.
- Difficulty Scaling (Group Growth): In both editions, the number of phantoms per spawn group and spawn frequency increase the longer the player avoids sleeping. Hard difficulty always produces the largest groups.
Sounds & Audio
The phantom’s sound design is genuinely unsettling, which is fitting for an undead sky predator. Fun fact: the sounds were recorded from developer Samuel Åberg’s baby son screaming. Parenthood, am I right?
- Ambient:
entity.phantom.ambient(Java) /mob.phantom.idle(Bedrock) — A high-pitched, breathy, ghostly hiss. Plays periodically while the phantom circles overhead. Often the first warning you get that phantoms have spawned. - Bite / Attack:
entity.phantom.bite(Java) /mob.phantom.bite(Bedrock) — A sharp snapping sound on contact during a swoop attack. - Swoop:
entity.phantom.swoop(Java) /mob.phantom.swoop(Bedrock) — A rushing, wind-like sound that plays when the phantom dives toward the player. If you hear this, start swinging. - Hurt:
entity.phantom.hurt(Java) /mob.phantom.hurt(Bedrock) — A distorted screech when the phantom takes damage. - Death:
entity.phantom.death(Java) /mob.phantom.death(Bedrock) — A drawn-out wail as the phantom dies. - Flap:
entity.phantom.flap(Java) /mob.phantom.flap(Bedrock) — The rhythmic wing-flapping sound. Subtle but audible when phantoms are circling nearby.
History & Major Changes
- MINECON Earth 2017: The phantom (originally called “Mob B” or “The Monster of the Night Skies”) won the community mob vote, beating out the Barnacle (Mob A), the Wildfire (Mob C), and the Great Hunger (Mob D).
- Java 18w07a (2018): Phantom added to the game for the first time. Initially had a different texture that was quickly revised.
- Java 1.13 (The Update Aquatic, July 2018): Phantom officially released in full. Originally dropped leather instead of phantom membranes.
- Java 18w14b: Phantom drops changed from leather to phantom membranes. Elytra repair material changed from leather to phantom membranes at the same time.
- Bedrock 1.6.0 (2018): Phantom added to Bedrock Edition.
- Java 1.16 (Nether Update, 2020): The
doInsomniagamerule was added, allowing players to disable phantom spawning without affecting other mechanics. This was a direct response to community feedback about phantoms being annoying. - Java 1.16.2: Phantoms no longer spawn in The End dimension (they previously could under certain conditions).
Notable Bugs & Quirks
- Building Intrusion: Phantoms can spawn inside buildings if the player is outside and the building is close enough with a large enough interior cavity. You might come home to find a phantom circling inside your living room.
- Mushroom Fields Spawning: Despite Mushroom Fields biomes normally preventing all hostile mob spawning, phantoms can spawn there. Their spawning mechanic bypasses the biome-based hostile mob restriction entirely.
- Mob Cap Bypass: Phantoms count toward the hostile mob cap but ignore it when spawning. Even if the hostile mob cap is full, phantoms will still appear if the sleep conditions are met.
- Turtle Egg Trampling: Phantoms can destroy turtle eggs despite being a flying mob. If they end up on the ground near eggs (for example, during a swoop), the eggs break.
- Scaffold One-Way: Phantoms can fly up through scaffolding but not down through it, creating an asymmetric movement quirk that can be exploited in farm designs.
- Muppet Mouth: The phantom was originally designed with a visible mouth, but the developers removed it because the model looked like a muppet. The current mouthless design is the result.
Advancements / Achievements
- Monster Hunter (Java): Kill any hostile mob. Phantom counts toward this advancement.
- Monsters Hunted (Java): Kill one of every hostile mob. Phantom is required for this advancement. Since phantoms only spawn when you skip sleep, you need to intentionally stay awake for 3+ days to encounter one.
- Adventure (Java): Kill any entity, or be killed by any entity. Phantom qualifies.
- Monster Hunter (Bedrock): Attack and destroy a hostile mob. Phantom qualifies.
Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia
- Minecraft Dungeons: Phantoms appear in Minecraft Dungeons as enemies. There is also a Phantom Armor set available to players.
- LEGO: A LEGO Minecraft Phantom set exists, because of course it does. Everything in Minecraft eventually becomes a LEGO set.
- Community Reputation: Phantoms are one of the most divisive mobs in Minecraft history. A significant portion of the community regrets voting for them, and the addition of the
doInsomniagamerule was essentially Mojang saying “okay, fine, here’s an off switch.” - Sound Origin: The phantom’s sounds were created from recordings of developer Samuel Åberg’s baby son screaming. So every time a phantom screeches at you from the sky, you are technically being attacked by a baby.
- Mob Vote Legacy: The phantom was the first mob added through a community vote. The voting system has continued with mobs like the Allay and the Armadillo in later years.
- Design Scraps: An earlier red-colored design was scrapped because it looked too much like a Nether mob. The teal/blue color was chosen to make it feel distinctly Overworld.
- Name Origin: The gamerule
doInsomniais a direct reference to the condition that triggers phantom spawning — insomnia literally means the inability to sleep.
