The Hoglin is the Nether’s answer to the question nobody asked: “What if a warthog was made of blocks, lived in a hellscape, and wanted to kill you on sight?” These massive hostile mobs roam the crimson forests of the Nether, and they are one of the only sources of food in an entire dimension that otherwise wants you dead and hungry. That alone makes them important. The fact that they hit like a freight train makes them terrifying.
Hoglins are breedable, huntable, and — if you know their one bizarre weakness — avoidable. They are scared of warped fungus and Nether portals, which is the Minecraft equivalent of a heavyweight boxer being afraid of a houseplant. Understanding how Hoglins work is the difference between a sustainable Nether food supply and getting launched into a lava lake by an angry pig-thing you did not see coming.
They are also the only hostile mob in the game that you can breed, which makes them uniquely useful for farming. And if you drag one into the Overworld, it transforms into a Zoglin — a zombified version that attacks everything in sight, including you, other mobs, and any remaining sense of order in your world. So maybe keep them in the Nether.

Appearance
Hoglins look like oversized, blocky warthogs built from dark brown and pinkish-tan textures. They have a massive head that makes up a disproportionate amount of their body — a design choice that really sells the “I’m going to headbutt you into next week” energy. Two large tusks jut forward from their lower jaw, and their small beady eyes sit above a wide snout. The overall silhouette screams “do not pet.”
Their body is stocky and rectangular, supported by four stubby legs that somehow still carry them at alarming speed. The skin texture alternates between dark reddish-brown on the back and lighter pinkish tones on the underbelly and face, giving them a grimy, Nether-appropriate color palette.
Baby Hoglins are exactly half the size of adults but keep the same proportions, which means they look like angry little bricks with tusks. They are hostile too, though they deal far less damage. Do not underestimate them — a baby Hoglin can still ruin your day if you are already low on health.
Behavior & AI
- Aggression: Hoglins are hostile to players on sight within 16 blocks. They will charge and attack immediately with no provocation needed. Unlike most hostile mobs, they do not require darkness or any special conditions — if they see you, they are coming for you.
- Attack Style: Hoglins charge at their target and deliver a melee attack that flings the target into the air. The vertical knockback is significant and can easily launch you off a cliff, a bridge, or into lava. The attack itself is painful, but the environmental hazards from the knockback are what really kill you.
- Warped Fungus Fear: Hoglins are afraid of warped fungus (the blue mushroom from warped forests). If a warped fungus, warped fungus planted in a pot, or a Nether portal is within 7 blocks, Hoglins will actively flee from it. This is the single most useful piece of Hoglin knowledge in the game — plant warped fungus around your Nether base and they will never bother you.
- Nether Portal Avoidance: Hoglins also retreat from Nether portals within 7 blocks. Between this and the warped fungus fear, you have two reliable ways to keep them at bay without swinging a sword.
- Group Behavior: When one Hoglin is attacked, nearby Hoglins within 16 blocks may become aggressive toward the attacker. They do not always swarm immediately, but hitting one in a group is a good way to have a very bad time very fast.
- Baby Hoglin Behavior: Baby Hoglins are also hostile and will attack players, but their damage is significantly lower and they do not launch you into the air. They are annoying more than dangerous, but “annoying” in the Nether can still get you killed.
- Idle Behavior: When not aggroed, Hoglins wander aimlessly through crimson forests. They do not interact with blocks or the environment in any meaningful way — they just pace around waiting for something to headbutt.
- Despawning: Hoglins follow standard mob despawn rules. They will despawn if no player is within 128 blocks. Hoglins that have been bred or interacted with (named, leashed, etc.) will not despawn.
- Lava and Fire: Hoglins are not immune to fire or lava. They can and will walk into lava and die, which is both darkly funny and occasionally inconvenient if you were trying to farm them.
Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects
- Melee Fling Attack: The Hoglin’s signature move. It charges and headbutts the target, dealing damage based on difficulty and launching the target upward. The upward knockback scales with difficulty — on Hard, you can be launched several blocks into the air. This is not regular knockback; it is specifically vertical.
- Knockback Resistance: With 60% knockback resistance, Hoglins are extremely difficult to push back with standard attacks. Knockback enchantments still work but are noticeably less effective. You are not going to kite a Hoglin easily.
- No Status Effects Inflicted: Hoglins do not apply any status effects with their attacks. The damage and knockback are purely physical. Small mercies.
- No Fire Immunity: Unlike many Nether mobs, Hoglins take full fire and lava damage. This is exploitable for farming but also means stray lava pools can kill the Hoglins you were trying to breed.
- Shield Interaction: Blocking a Hoglin’s attack with a shield in Java Edition negates the damage and most of the knockback. In Bedrock Edition, shields work against Hoglins as well but the timing can feel slightly different due to combat mechanics.
Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth
- Breeding Food: Crimson fungus. Hold it in your hand and Hoglins will follow you — yes, the thing that wants to kill you will calmly follow you around if you wave a red mushroom at it. Right-click two adult Hoglins with crimson fungus to breed them.
- Taming: Hoglins cannot be tamed. They will attack you before, during, and after you feed them. The breeding interaction is purely transactional — they take your fungus, make a baby, and then immediately try to kill you again.
- Baby Growth: Baby Hoglins take 20 minutes (one full Minecraft day) to grow into adults. You can speed this up by feeding them crimson fungus — each feeding reduces the remaining growth time by 10%.
- Leashing: Hoglins can be leashed with a lead. This is useful for moving them to specific locations for farming, though they will continue trying to attack you the entire time. It is like walking a very angry, very blocky dog.
- No Saddle/Mount: You cannot ride Hoglins. They cannot be equipped with saddles, armor, or chests. They are purely a combat and food source mob.
Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms
Zoglin (Zombified Hoglin)
- Transformation Trigger: When a Hoglin enters the Overworld or the End, it begins shaking and converts into a Zoglin after 15 seconds (300 ticks). This transformation is permanent and cannot be reversed.
- Zoglin Behavior: Zoglins are hostile to all mobs except Creepers and other Zoglins. They attack players, villagers, Iron Golems, and pretty much anything with a heartbeat. They are chaos incarnate.
- Zoglin Stats: Zoglins retain the 40 health points and knockback resistance of the Hoglin but cannot be bred, cannot be lured with crimson fungus, and drop rotten flesh instead of pork. They are essentially a Hoglin that traded all its useful properties for pure aggression.
- Baby Zoglin: Baby Hoglins also convert into baby Zoglins when brought to the Overworld or End. Baby Zoglins are equally hostile to everything.
- Zoglin Entity ID:
minecraft:zoglin— this is a separate entity, not a variant of the Hoglin.
Baby Hoglin
- Spawning: Baby Hoglins have a 5% chance to spawn naturally as part of Hoglin groups in crimson forests.
- Combat: Baby Hoglins are hostile and attack players, but deal significantly less damage and do not apply the signature vertical knockback. They are still annoying enough to warrant dealing with.
- Drops: Baby Hoglins do not drop any items or experience when killed, unless killed by a player (1 XP only, no food drops). Do not waste your Looting sword on them.
Spawning
| Spawn Condition | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Crimson Forest biome (natural spawning), Bastion Remnant hoglin stables (structure spawning) |
| Biomes | Crimson Forest only (natural spawn) |
| Y-Level Range | Any Y-level within the Nether (0–127) |
| Light Level | Any light level — Hoglins do not have a light level requirement for spawning |
| Required Block | Crimson Nylium (for natural spawning in crimson forests) |
| Group Size | Java: 3–4 per group Bedrock: 3–4 per group |
| Weight | Spawn weight of 20 in crimson forests — they are one of the most common mobs in this biome |
| Edition Differences | Spawning mechanics are functionally identical between Java and Bedrock. Bastion Remnant stables contain pre-spawned Hoglins in both editions. |
Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs
- Piglins (Hunting): Adult Piglins will hunt Hoglins in groups. If there are enough Piglins nearby (generally 3 or more adults with crossbows), they will coordinate attacks on Hoglins. This is one of the few mob-vs-mob interactions in the Nether that happens naturally, and it is genuinely entertaining to watch.
- Piglin Retreat: If there are fewer Piglins than Hoglins in an area, the Piglins will actually flee from the Hoglins. The AI calculates group numbers, and the side with fewer members retreats. It is a surprisingly sophisticated system for a game about punching trees.
- Warped Fungus (Fear Target): Hoglins flee from warped fungus blocks, potted warped fungus, and Nether portals within 7 blocks. This is a hard-coded behavior that overrides their aggression — they will run away even mid-attack.
- Zoglin Conversion: Entering the Overworld or End triggers the 15-second conversion to Zoglin. There is no way to prevent this once the Hoglin is in the wrong dimension. No potions, no enchantments, no amount of pleading.
- Lava Interaction: Hoglins are not fire-resistant and will take damage from lava and fire. Their pathfinding generally avoids lava, but they are not perfect — during combat, they can blunder into lava pools while chasing you.
- Boats and Minecarts: Hoglins can be placed in boats and minecarts using standard methods. A Hoglin in a boat cannot attack and will not flee from warped fungus. This is useful for transporting them to specific locations for farms.
Drops & Loot
| Item | Quantity | Chance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raw Porkchop | 2–4 | Guaranteed Roll | Drops 1 extra per level of Looting (max 2–7 with Looting III). Drops as Cooked Porkchop if the Hoglin dies from fire damage. |
| Leather | 0–1 | Guaranteed Roll | Drops 1 extra per level of Looting (max 0–4 with Looting III). |
| Experience | 5 XP | Guaranteed (player/wolf kill) | Only drops when killed by a player or tamed wolf. Baby Hoglins drop 1 XP and no items. |
Player Uses & Farming
- Nether Food Source: Hoglins are the only reliable source of food in the Nether. Raw porkchop restores 3 hunger points, and cooked porkchop restores 8. Since Hoglins drop 2–4 raw porkchops on death, even a single kill can keep you fed for a while. Kill them with fire for pre-cooked drops.
- Hoglin Farm Design: The most common Hoglin farm uses crimson fungus to breed them in an enclosed area, then drops them into a kill chamber. Since they flee from warped fungus, you can use warped fungus to herd them toward a specific area. A lava blade or campfire kill method cooks the porkchops automatically.
- Breeding Farm: Build a crimson nylium platform in the Nether, enclose it with walls they cannot escape, and breed Hoglins with crimson fungus. The babies grow in 20 minutes. Feed them more crimson fungus to accelerate growth. Use a trapdoor drop to separate adults from babies when ready for harvest.
- Leather Source: Hoglins are a renewable source of leather in the Nether, which is useful for crafting books, item frames, and armor. Not the most exciting use, but leather is leather.
- Fire Kill Method: Killing Hoglins with fire damage (lava, Fire Aspect sword, flint and steel) causes them to drop cooked porkchops instead of raw. This saves fuel and furnace time, making fire-based kill chambers the most efficient design for Hoglin farms.
- Expected Rates: A well-designed breeding farm with manual killing can produce roughly 200–400 cooked porkchops per hour depending on how aggressively you breed and how fast your kill method works. Fully automated designs using lava can push higher but require more complex redstone.
Commands & NBT
Here are common commands for summoning and customizing Hoglins:
/summon minecraft:hoglin ~ ~ ~
/summon minecraft:hoglin ~ ~ ~ {IsBaby:1b}
/summon minecraft:hoglin ~ ~ ~ {IsImmuneToZombification:1b}
/summon minecraft:hoglin ~ ~ ~ {CustomName:'{"text":"Gerald"}',IsImmuneToZombification:1b}
IsBaby: Set to1bto summon a baby Hoglin. Defaults to0b(adult).IsImmuneToZombification: Set to1bto prevent the Hoglin from converting into a Zoglin when in the Overworld or End. Essential for Overworld Hoglin displays or farms. Defaults to0b.TimeInOverworld: Tracks the number of ticks the Hoglin has spent in the Overworld. Conversion triggers at 300 ticks (15 seconds). Reset to 0 to delay conversion. Only relevant ifIsImmuneToZombificationis0b.CannotBeHunted: Set to1bto prevent Piglins from targeting this Hoglin for hunting. Useful for custom maps where you want peaceful coexistence.
Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks
- Entity Type Tags:
#minecraft:hoglin— used in entity type tag checks. Hoglins are also part of#minecraft:dismounts_underwater(passengers dismount if the Hoglin enters water). - Mob Category: Hoglins count toward the hostile mob cap in both editions. This is relevant for farm designs — too many hostile mobs in loaded chunks can prevent new Hoglins from spawning.
- Loot Table Path:
minecraft:entities/hoglin— can be overridden in datapacks to customize drops. mobGriefingGamerule: Hoglins do not grief blocks, so this gamerule has no effect on their behavior.doMobSpawningGamerule: Setting this to false prevents natural Hoglin spawning. Pre-existing Hoglins and those spawned via commands are unaffected.
Difficulty & Edition Differences
- Damage Scaling: Hoglin melee damage scales significantly with difficulty. On Easy, the attack is relatively manageable (2.5–5 damage). On Hard, a single hit can deal up to 12 damage (6 hearts) before accounting for the knockback fall damage. The knockback height also increases with difficulty.
- Armor Scaling: Hoglins do not gain armor points on higher difficulties. Their health remains 40 across all difficulty levels. The increased danger comes entirely from damage output and knockback.
- Java vs. Bedrock — Combat: Java Edition’s combat cooldown system means you need to time your attacks carefully against Hoglins. Bedrock Edition’s spam-click combat makes the fight more of a DPS race. Both approaches work, but the strategy differs.
- Java vs. Bedrock — Piglin Hunting: The Piglin group hunting mechanic works identically in both editions, but the actual AI execution can look slightly different due to pathfinding differences between the two codebases.
- Java vs. Bedrock — Zoglin Conversion: The 15-second (300 tick) conversion timer is consistent across both editions. No mechanical difference here.
- Peaceful Mode: Hoglins do not spawn in Peaceful difficulty. Pre-existing Hoglins are removed when switching to Peaceful.
Sounds & Audio
- Ambient:
entity.hoglin.ambient— a deep, guttural snorting sound. You will learn to recognize it quickly, because it usually means something is about to headbutt you. - Angry:
entity.hoglin.angry— a louder, more aggressive variant of the ambient sound that plays when the Hoglin targets a player. - Hurt:
entity.hoglin.hurt— a squealing sound on taking damage. - Death:
entity.hoglin.death— a final pained squeal. Music to the ears of anyone who just got launched off a cliff five seconds ago. - Attack:
entity.hoglin.attack— plays during the headbutt animation. - Step:
entity.hoglin.step— heavy footstep sounds appropriate for an oversized Nether pig. - Retreat:
entity.hoglin.retreat— plays when the Hoglin flees from warped fungus or a Nether portal. - Converted to Zoglin:
entity.hoglin.converted_to_zombified— a distorted transformation sound when the Hoglin becomes a Zoglin.
History & Major Changes
- 20w06a (Java Snapshot): Hoglin added to the game under the temporary name “Hoglin” (originally referred to as “Piglin Beast” during early development). Initially hostile with basic AI.
- 20w07a: Hoglin renamed from internal “Piglin Beast” designation. Breeding with crimson fungus added. Baby Hoglins added.
- 20w09a: Warped fungus avoidance behavior added. Hoglins now flee from warped fungus blocks and Nether portals.
- 20w14a: Zoglin conversion mechanic added — Hoglins now transform when brought to the Overworld or End.
- 20w19a: Hoglin loot table finalized with raw porkchop and leather drops. Fire death cooked porkchop mechanic confirmed.
- 1.16 (Java) / 1.16.0 (Bedrock): Full release as part of the Nether Update. All mechanics finalized.
- 1.16.2: Piglin hunting behavior refined — group dynamics and retreat thresholds adjusted for better AI coordination.
Notable Bugs & Quirks
- Knockback Into Lava: The vertical knockback from a Hoglin attack can launch you directly into overhead lava pools in the Nether ceiling area. This is technically working as intended, but it feels deeply unfair every single time it happens.
- Breeding While Hostile: You can feed crimson fungus to a Hoglin that is actively trying to kill you. The breeding animation plays, hearts appear, and then it immediately goes back to attacking you. The romantic mood does not last.
- Boat Trapping: Placing a Hoglin in a boat completely neutralizes it — it cannot attack, cannot flee from warped fungus, and just sits there angrily. This is not a bug, but it feels like an exploit.
- Baby Hoglin Pathfinding: Baby Hoglins occasionally get stuck on terrain features that adults navigate without issue, due to their smaller hitbox interacting differently with block collision. Not game-breaking, but you will notice it.
Advancements / Achievements
- Monster Hunter (Java): Kill any hostile mob. Hoglins count toward this advancement.
- Monsters Hunted (Java): Kill one of every hostile mob. Hoglins are on the list, so you need to take at least one down for full completion.
- The Parrots and the Bats (Java): Breed two animals together. Breeding Hoglins with crimson fungus counts toward this advancement — yes, breeding the thing that is actively trying to murder you counts as an animal husbandry achievement.
- Two by Two (Java): Breed all breedable mobs. Hoglins are required for completion.
- Monster Hunter (Bedrock): Kill a hostile mob. Same concept, same Hoglin eligibility.
Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia
- Original Name: During early Nether Update development, Hoglins were referred to as “Piglin Beasts” in internal code and early snapshots. The community voted on the name “Hoglin” during a Twitter poll conducted by Mojang.
- Only Breedable Hostile Mob: Hoglins are the only hostile mob in Minecraft that can be bred. Every other breedable mob is passive or neutral. This makes them mechanically unique in the entire game.
- Only Nether Food Source: Hoglins are the only mob-based food source native to the Nether. Without them, the Nether would be a food desert — you would need to bring all your food from the Overworld or survive on mushroom stew from warped/crimson fungus.
- Zoglin Reference: The name “Zoglin” follows the Minecraft zombie-prefix naming convention (Zombie → Zombified Piglin, Hoglin → Zoglin). The “Z” prefix has become a shorthand in the community for “the undead version of this thing.”
- Minecraft Dungeons: Hoglins appear as enemies in Minecraft Dungeons DLC content, where they function as charging melee attackers similar to their base game behavior.
- Piglin Ecosystem: Hoglins are part of a carefully designed Nether ecosystem alongside Piglins, Piglin Brutes, and Striders. The hunting relationship between Piglins and Hoglins was specifically designed to make the crimson forest feel like a living biome rather than a random collection of hostile mobs.
