Pufferfish

The pufferfish is Minecraft’s answer to the question: “What if a fish could ruin your entire day just by existing near you?” This tiny aquatic mob looks harmless enough swimming around warm ocean biomes — until you get within a few blocks of it and it balloons up like an angry little spike ball and poisons you. No attack animation. No warning sound. It just puffs up and suddenly you are taking Poison damage and rethinking your decision to go for a casual swim.

Pufferfish are passive in the sense that they do not chase you down or target you intentionally. They are defensive — get close and they inflate, dealing damage and inflicting Poison on any mob or player within range. Think of them as the underwater equivalent of stepping on a Lego. They did not mean to hurt you, but they absolutely did, and they do not feel bad about it.

Beyond being a hazard to swimmers, pufferfish are genuinely useful. They are a key ingredient in brewing Potions of Water Breathing, which makes them one of the most important fish in the game for anyone who wants to explore ocean monuments without drowning. You can also use them in crafting suspicious stew recipes and feeding them to cats for taming purposes. So yes — the fish that poisons you is also the fish that lets you breathe underwater. Minecraft logic at its finest.

Appearance

In its default deflated state, the pufferfish is one of the smallest mobs in the game — a little yellow-brown fish with a stumpy body and big dark eyes. It looks completely non-threatening, which is part of the problem. Players tend to swim right up to it without a second thought.

When a player or mob gets within roughly 2 blocks, the pufferfish enters its half-inflated state. Its body expands slightly, and small spikes begin to protrude from its surface. This is your warning shot. If you keep getting closer, it fully inflates into a round, spiky ball roughly twice its original size. The spikes are clearly visible and the whole body becomes rounder and blockier — the Minecraft equivalent of a cactus that decided to become a fish.

Once the threat moves away, it deflates in stages — fully inflated to half-inflated, then half-inflated back to normal. The whole deflation process takes a few seconds, so even after you back off, it stays dangerous for a moment. The inflation and deflation is purely visual and collision-based — there is no particle effect or sound cue, which makes it easy to stumble into the damage zone without realizing it.

Behavior & AI

  • Idle Behavior: Pufferfish swim aimlessly in warm ocean waters, drifting slowly in random directions. They have no goal, no target, no agenda. They are just vibing until something gets too close.
  • Inflation Trigger: When any mob or player comes within approximately 2 blocks, the pufferfish begins inflating. It transitions from deflated to half-inflated after about 1 second, and from half-inflated to fully inflated after another second. It does not chase — it simply reacts to proximity.
  • Deflation: Once all entities leave the trigger radius, the pufferfish stays fully inflated for a few seconds before deflating back through half-inflated and then to its resting state.
  • Targeting: Pufferfish do not target anything. They inflate indiscriminately — players, mobs, even other fish swimming too close can trigger the reaction. They will poison anything that touches them while inflated, including armor stands in Bedrock Edition.
  • Water Dependency: Pufferfish require water to survive. On land, they flop around helplessly and take suffocation damage, dying within about 10 seconds. They cannot pathfind on land at all.
  • Persistence / Despawn: Pufferfish follow standard mob despawning rules. They despawn if no player is within 128 blocks and can despawn randomly when no player is within 32 blocks. Named pufferfish or those picked up in a bucket persist and will not despawn.
  • Buckets: You can scoop up a pufferfish using a water bucket, creating a Bucket of Pufferfish. Placing it back down spawns the same pufferfish with its data preserved. This is the safest way to transport them.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Poison Sting: When fully inflated, any entity that touches the pufferfish takes 1 point (0.5 hearts) of direct damage and receives a Poison effect. The Poison level and duration scale with difficulty — Poison I for 7 seconds on Easy, Poison II for 7 seconds on Normal, and Poison IV for 7 seconds on Hard. This is a contact-based effect, not a projectile.
  • Repeated Damage: The contact damage and Poison application can trigger repeatedly if you remain in contact with the inflated pufferfish. Each tick of contact can re-apply the sting, making it extremely punishing to stay close.
  • Passive to Undead: Poison does not harm undead mobs — it heals them. So a pufferfish sting actually heals zombies, skeletons, and drowned. A drowned wandering through a pufferfish zone is getting a free health boost, which is both ironic and annoying.
  • Armor Does Not Help (Much): Armor reduces the 0.5 hearts of direct contact damage, but Poison bypasses armor entirely. Your full netherite set will not save you from the Poison effect — only Milk, a Honey Bottle, or Poison resistance will clear it.
  • No Knockback: The pufferfish does not deal knockback with its sting. You are free to float there and absorb every tick of Poison like a champion if you choose to.
  • Shield Interaction: Shields do not block pufferfish Poison. The effect is applied on contact with the entity’s hitbox, not as a blockable attack.

Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms

Inflation States

The pufferfish has three distinct visual states, which technically function as variant forms even though they are the same entity:

  • Deflated (State 0): The default resting state. Small, flat body with no visible spikes. Completely harmless in this state — no Poison, no contact damage. This is the only state where you can safely touch the pufferfish.
  • Half-Inflated (State 1): The body expands slightly and small spikes emerge. This is the transitional state and acts as a visual warning. The pufferfish does not deal Poison or contact damage in this state in Java Edition, but in Bedrock Edition it can begin dealing damage during this phase.
  • Fully Inflated (State 2): Maximum size with clearly visible spikes covering the body. This is the dangerous state — contact triggers Poison and direct damage. The hitbox grows noticeably larger in this form.

There are no color variants, baby forms, or naturally spawning special versions of the pufferfish. What you see is what you get — one fish, three sizes, one bad attitude.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location In water blocks within warm ocean biomes
Biomes Warm Ocean, Lukewarm Ocean, Deep Lukewarm Ocean
Y-Level Range Y 50 to Y 63 (ocean surface to moderate depth)
Light Level Any light level
Required Block Water block
Group Size Java: 1–3
Bedrock: 3–5
Weight 15 (uncommon compared to tropical fish and cod)
Edition Differences Bedrock spawns pufferfish in slightly larger groups. Both editions restrict spawning to warm ocean variants only. Pufferfish cannot spawn in cold, frozen, or standard ocean biomes.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Other Fish: Pufferfish can inflate when other fish swim too close, but since fish are small and move quickly, this rarely results in actual damage to them. Tropical fish in particular tend to trigger inflation just by existing in the same general area.
  • Drowned: Drowned mobs swimming near pufferfish will trigger inflation and receive the Poison effect — but since drowned are undead, the Poison actually heals them instead. The pufferfish is accidentally helping the enemy.
  • Axolotls: Axolotls actively hunt pufferfish and will attack them on sight. The pufferfish will inflate when the axolotl gets close, but axolotls are fast enough to kill the pufferfish before the Poison does any serious damage. In practice, axolotls are the pufferfish’s natural predator.
  • Guardians & Elder Guardians: Guardians will attack pufferfish. This means ocean monuments are not safe zones for these little guys either.
  • Boats & Minecarts: Pufferfish can be pushed into boats but cannot ride in them like other mobs. They flop awkwardly and usually die from suffocation if removed from water.
  • Wolves: If a wolf touches an inflated pufferfish, it takes the Poison and contact damage just like any other mob. There is no special immunity.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Pufferfish (item) 1 100% Always drops exactly 1 pufferfish item. Not affected by Looting enchantment.
Bone Meal 1 5% Java Edition only. Drops as a bonus roll on death.
Experience 1–3 100% Drops when killed by a player or tamed wolf only.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Potion of Water Breathing: This is the big one. Combine a pufferfish with an Awkward Potion in a brewing stand to create a Potion of Water Breathing (3 minutes). This is the primary reason most players want pufferfish, and it makes ocean monument raids dramatically more survivable. You can extend the duration to 8 minutes with Redstone Dust.
  • Eating (Not Recommended): You can eat a pufferfish. It restores 1 hunger point and gives you Hunger III for 15 seconds, Nausea II for 15 seconds, and Poison II for 60 seconds. This is one of the worst foods in the entire game. The only reason to eat one is to earn the “A Furious Cocktail” or “How Did We Get Here?” advancements, which require having multiple status effects active simultaneously.
  • Cat Taming: Pufferfish can be used to tame stray cats, just like raw cod and raw salmon. Given how easy cod is to get, this is rarely the practical choice, but it works if pufferfish is all you have.
  • Fishing: Pufferfish can be caught while fishing with a 13% base chance (from the “fish” loot table, which itself has a base ~85% chance, making pufferfish roughly an 11.1% overall catch rate). Luck of the Sea does not affect fish catch rates — it only shifts the balance between fish, junk, and treasure categories.
  • Farming via Buckets: The most reliable way to stockpile pufferfish is to visit warm oceans with a stack of water buckets, scoop them up, and bring them home. You can release them into a contained water area for later harvesting.
  • Automatic Farms: Pufferfish farms are possible but impractical compared to just fishing or bucket-collecting. Since pufferfish only spawn in warm ocean biomes, any spawning-based farm must be built in or over a warm ocean. Most players find it easier to just fish for them.

Commands & NBT

/summon minecraft:pufferfish ~ ~ ~

Summons a pufferfish at your current location. It needs water to survive, so either summon it in water or have a water source ready.

/summon minecraft:pufferfish ~ ~ ~ {PuffState:2}

Summons a pufferfish that is already fully inflated. PuffState values: 0 = deflated, 1 = half-inflated, 2 = fully inflated. Note that without a nearby entity to keep it inflated, it will begin deflating on its own.

/give @s minecraft:pufferfish_bucket

Gives yourself a Bucket of Pufferfish item, which can be placed in water to release a pufferfish.

  • Notable NBT Keys:
  • PuffState — Integer (0, 1, or 2). Controls the current inflation level of the pufferfish. 0 is deflated, 1 is half-inflated, 2 is fully inflated.
  • FromBucket — Boolean. If true, the pufferfish was released from a bucket and will not despawn naturally.
  • NoAI — Boolean. When set to 1, the pufferfish will not move or inflate. Useful for decorative builds.
  • Silent — Boolean. Suppresses all sounds from the entity.
  • Invulnerable — Boolean. Prevents the pufferfish from taking any damage.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Tags (Java): #minecraft:axolotl_hunt_targets — Pufferfish are included in this tag, which is why axolotls attack them on sight.
  • Entity Tags (Java): #minecraft:aquatic — Groups pufferfish with all other water-based mobs for general aquatic mob rules.
  • Entity Tags (Java): #minecraft:not_scary_for_pufferfish — Entities in this tag do not trigger pufferfish inflation. Currently empty by default, but can be modified by datapacks to prevent specific mobs from causing inflation.
  • Loot Table: minecraft:entities/pufferfish — Can be overridden in datapacks to change drops.
  • Gamerule: mobGriefing — Does not affect pufferfish, as they do not modify blocks.
  • Gamerule: doMobSpawning — Set to false to prevent pufferfish (and all mobs) from spawning naturally.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Easy: Poison I for 7 seconds. Deals minimal total Poison damage — more of an annoyance than a real threat. Combined with the 0.5 hearts of contact damage, you will survive easily with any reasonable amount of food.
  • Normal: Poison II for 7 seconds. Noticeably more damage. If you are already hurt from fighting drowned or guardians, a pufferfish sting can put you in serious danger.
  • Hard: Poison IV for 7 seconds. This hurts. A lot. On Hard difficulty, a single pufferfish sting can drain 6 hearts from Poison alone, plus the direct contact damage. If you are not at full health, this can be lethal — which is an absurd thing to say about a fish.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Inflation Damage: In Java Edition, the pufferfish only deals damage and applies Poison when fully inflated (State 2). In Bedrock Edition, it can begin dealing damage during the half-inflated state (State 1), making it slightly more dangerous on Bedrock.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Group Size: Java spawns pufferfish in groups of 1–3, while Bedrock spawns them in groups of 3–5. You will encounter more of them per cluster on Bedrock.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Bone Meal Drop: The 5% bone meal drop on death exists only in Java Edition.

Sounds & Audio

  • entity.pufferfish.ambient — Idle ambient sound. A quiet, bubbly noise that plays periodically while the pufferfish is swimming.
  • entity.pufferfish.blow_up — Inflation sound. Plays when the pufferfish transitions to a higher inflation state. A short, airy pop sound.
  • entity.pufferfish.blow_out — Deflation sound. Plays when the pufferfish returns to a lower inflation state.
  • entity.pufferfish.death — Death sound. Plays when the pufferfish is killed.
  • entity.pufferfish.flop — Flopping sound. Plays when the pufferfish is on land and flopping around helplessly.
  • entity.pufferfish.hurt — Hurt sound. Plays when the pufferfish takes damage from any source.
  • entity.pufferfish.sting — Sting sound. Plays when the pufferfish’s Poison effect is applied to an entity that touches it.

History & Major Changes

  • Java 1.7.2 (13w36a): Pufferfish item added as a fishing loot drop. The mob itself did not exist yet — you could only obtain the item by fishing.
  • Java 1.13 (18w10a): Pufferfish mob added as a living entity as part of the Update Aquatic. Spawns in warm oceans with full inflation mechanics.
  • Java 1.13 (18w10b): Pufferfish can now be collected in water buckets.
  • Bedrock 1.4.0 (beta 1.2.20.1): Pufferfish mob added to Bedrock Edition as part of the Update Aquatic.
  • Java 1.14: Pufferfish can now be used to tame cats (stray cats replaced ocelot taming).
  • Java 1.17: Pufferfish are now targeted and hunted by axolotls.
  • Java 1.19.4: Entity tag #minecraft:not_scary_for_pufferfish introduced, allowing datapacks to control what triggers inflation.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Armor Stand Inflation (Bedrock): In Bedrock Edition, pufferfish can inflate when near armor stands, treating them as entities that trigger the defense response. This does not occur in Java Edition.
  • Poison Heals Undead: Since Poison heals undead mobs, pufferfish in warm oceans actively benefit drowned that swim near them. This is technically working as intended, but it feels like a bug when a defensive mob is accidentally buffing the thing that is trying to kill you.
  • Inflation Through Walls: Pufferfish can detect entities through thin walls (1 block thick), causing them to inflate even when there is no direct line of sight. This is a hitbox detection quirk rather than a proper bug, but it can be surprising when you see a pufferfish puff up through a glass pane.
  • Land Inflation: If a pufferfish is on land (flopping and dying), it can still inflate if a player walks near it. It will poison you while suffocating to death, which is commitment.

Advancements / Achievements

  • Fishy Business (Java): Catch any fish with a fishing rod. Pufferfish count toward this advancement.
  • A Furious Cocktail (Java): Have every status effect applied at the same time. Eating a pufferfish gives you three effects at once (Hunger, Nausea, Poison), which is a convenient — if painful — shortcut for stacking effects.
  • How Did We Get Here? (Java): Have every effect applied at the same time. This is the extreme version of A Furious Cocktail, and eating a pufferfish is part of most strategies for completing it.
  • Tactical Fishing (Java): Catch a fish using a water bucket. Scooping up a pufferfish with a bucket qualifies.
  • The Cutest Predator (Java): Catch an axolotl in a bucket. Not directly related to pufferfish, but the axolotl-pufferfish predator-prey relationship is part of why this advancement exists.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Real-World Basis: The Minecraft pufferfish is based on real pufferfish (family Tetraodontidae), which inflate their bodies as a defense mechanism and contain tetrodotoxin — one of the most potent natural toxins known. The in-game Poison effect is a simplified version of this real-world defense.
  • Fugu Connection: In real life, pufferfish (known as fugu in Japan) is considered a delicacy despite being potentially lethal if prepared incorrectly. The Minecraft version captures this duality perfectly — it poisons you if you eat it, but it is also one of the most valuable fish for brewing.
  • Before the Mob: The pufferfish item existed for nearly six years (Java 1.7.2 through 1.12.2) before the actual pufferfish mob was added in 1.13. For all that time, players could fish up pufferfish, eat them, and brew with them — but the living creature did not exist in the game.
  • Smallest Defensive Mob: The pufferfish is arguably the smallest mob in the game that can deal damage to the player. It is smaller than a silverfish when deflated and still manages to be more annoying per cubic block than almost anything else in the ocean.
  • Minecraft Dungeons: Pufferfish do not appear as enemies in Minecraft Dungeons, but the pufferfish item exists as a consumable artifact that creates a poisonous area around the player.
