The axolotl is the cutest mob in Minecraft that will also absolutely wreck everything else living in the water. These little amphibians look like they belong in a children’s storybook, but drop one into an ocean monument and watch it go to war with guardians like it has a personal grudge. Axolotls are passive toward players, hostile toward almost every other aquatic mob, and surprisingly useful as underwater combat allies.
Found exclusively in lush caves since the 1.18 update, axolotls are one of those mobs that Mojang added to raise awareness about real-world endangered species. The real axolotl is critically endangered and native to Mexico, with roughly 1,200 left in the wild — which is also why the rare blue variant has a 1 in 1,200 breeding chance. Cute, educational, and weirdly violent. That is the axolotl experience.
What makes axolotls genuinely valuable beyond their appearance is what they do for the player in combat. When you kill a mob that an axolotl is also fighting, you get Regeneration I and any Mining Fatigue effect gets removed. That Mining Fatigue removal alone makes axolotls borderline essential for raiding ocean monuments, because elder guardians are significantly less terrifying when your army of tiny pink salamanders is drawing aggro and handing you free health regeneration.

Appearance
Axolotls have a wide, flat body with four stubby legs, a broad tail, and a pair of external gills that fan out from their head like tiny coral branches. The model is low to the ground and wider than it is tall, which gives them a permanently squishy, pancake-like silhouette. They waddle on land and swim with a smooth side-to-side motion underwater.
There are five color variants. Leucistic (pink with dark pink gills) is the most common and the one most players picture when they think of axolotls. Wild (brown with dark brown gills) looks like it crawled out of a swamp. Gold (yellow with golden gills) is the flashy one. Cyan (white with pink gills) is the sleeper favorite. Blue (indigo with orange gills) is the rarest variant in the game and the only color that does not exist in real life — it is a reference to Mudkip from the Pokémon series.
Baby axolotls are scaled-down versions of the adult model at 50% size. They share the same color as one of their parents and follow adult axolotls around. The Dinnerbone name tag trick works on axolotls, but because they are already so flat, the upside-down effect is barely noticeable.
Behavior & AI
- Aggro & Targeting: Axolotls are completely passive toward players — you can punch one in the face and it will not fight back. Toward aquatic mobs, however, they are relentless. They attack fish (cod, salmon, tropical fish, pufferfish), squid, glow squid, drowned, guardians, and elder guardians. They do not attack turtles, dolphins, frogs, or other axolotls.
- Attack Cooldown: After killing a non-hostile mob (like a fish or squid), axolotls enter a two-minute cooldown before they will hunt another non-hostile target. Hostile mobs like drowned and guardians are always prioritized and have no cooldown limitation.
- Pathfinding: Axolotls prefer water at least 2 blocks deep and will actively pathfind to deep water within 16 blocks. On land, they wander up to 8–9 blocks from the water’s edge before turning around. If no water at least 2 blocks deep exists within 16 blocks, they wander randomly on land until they find some — or until the 5-minute drying timer kills them.
- Drying Out: Axolotls die after 6,000 game ticks (5 minutes) out of water. This also applies while they are riding in a boat. Unlike fish, dolphins, and squid, axolotls do not survive rain or thunderstorms — weather does not reset their drying timer.
- Following Players: Holding a bucket of tropical fish makes nearby axolotls swim toward the player. This is how you herd them without a lead.
- Flowing Water: Axolotls cannot be pushed by flowing water, which is unusual for mobs. They are still affected by bubble columns.
- Despawning: Axolotls picked up with a water bucket and released become persistent — they will never despawn. Wild axolotls that have not been bucketed can despawn normally.
- Pufferfish Trigger: Unlike other aquatic mobs, axolotls cause nearby pufferfish to inflate, treating them as a threat.
Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects
- Attack Damage: 2 damage (1 heart) per hit. They attack using a headbutt animation. Not exactly devastating, but they make up for it with persistence and numbers.
- Play Dead: When an axolotl takes damage underwater, it has a chance to play dead. It drops to the ground for 200 game ticks (10 seconds) and gains Regeneration I, recovering 4 health points. Hostile aquatic mobs completely ignore a playing-dead axolotl. The trigger has two conditions: there is a baseline 1 in 3 chance to play dead on any hit, and additionally, if the incoming damage exceeds a random integer from 0–2 or the axolotl’s health is below 50%, it will play dead regardless.
- Player Regeneration: When a player kills a mob that an axolotl is currently fighting, the player receives Regeneration I for 100 game ticks (5 seconds) per axolotl involved in the combat, stacking up to a maximum of 2,400 game ticks (2 minutes) in Java Edition.
- Mining Fatigue Removal: Killing a mob in combat with an axolotl also removes Mining Fatigue from the player. This is the big one — elder guardians inflict Mining Fatigue III, and axolotls are the only mob in the game that can remove it through combat interaction.
- Impaling Vulnerability: As aquatic mobs, axolotls take extra damage from the Impaling enchantment in Java Edition. Keep your tridents pointed at the guardians, not your allies.
Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth
- Food Item: Buckets of tropical fish are the only item axolotls interact with for breeding and growth. Regular tropical fish items do not work — the fish has to be alive in the bucket. This is because real axolotls only eat living prey, and Mojang kept that detail.
- Taming: Axolotls cannot be tamed like wolves or cats. There is no ownership system, no sitting, no teleporting. However, picking an axolotl up in a water bucket and releasing it makes it persistent, which is the closest thing to taming. The community calls this “trust” rather than taming.
- Breeding: Feed two adult axolotls a bucket of tropical fish each. They enter love mode, and a baby axolotl spawns. The baby has a 1 in 1,200 (0.083%) chance of being the rare blue variant regardless of the parents’ colors. Otherwise, it inherits one parent’s color at random. Breeding grants 1–7 XP.
- Breeding Cooldown: Parents cannot breed again for 5 minutes in Java Edition or 1 minute in Bedrock Edition. That Bedrock cooldown is five times faster, which makes blue axolotl hunting dramatically more efficient on Bedrock.
- Baby Growth: Baby axolotls take 20 minutes (24,000 ticks) to grow into adults. Feeding them a bucket of tropical fish reduces the remaining growth time by 10% per use. Babies follow adult axolotls.
- Leads: Axolotls can be attached to leads. When led on land, they move at an exaggeratedly fast speed — a quirk that looks hilarious and is technically a bug that has never been fixed.
- Buckets: Right-clicking an axolotl with a water bucket captures it as a bucket of axolotl item. The bucket preserves the axolotl’s variant, health, age, and other data. This is the primary way to transport them.
Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms
Color Variants
- Leucistic (Lucy): Pink body with dark pink gills. Variant ID 0. The most iconic axolotl and the one used on the spawn egg texture. This is the variant most players encounter first. Approximately 24.98% spawn chance.
- Cyan: Light blue-white body with pink gills. Variant ID 1. Approximately 24.98% spawn chance.
- Gold: Yellow body with golden gills. Variant ID 2. Approximately 24.98% spawn chance.
- Wild: Brown body with dark brown gills. Variant ID 3. Approximately 24.98% spawn chance. Texture file is named “wild.”
- Blue: Indigo body with orange gills. Variant ID 4. Cannot spawn naturally. Only obtainable through breeding (1 in 1,200 chance per baby) or commands. The rarest passive mob variant in Minecraft. The 1 in 1,200 chance references the approximately 1,200 axolotls remaining in the wild. The blue color itself is a reference to Mudkip from Pokémon, suggested by Reddit user Darkiceflame.
A green variant appeared in the Caves & Cliffs Part I announcement trailer but was never added to the game. When asked about it on a livestream, Agnes Larsson said she could not explain why it was removed.
Spawning
| Spawn Condition | Details |
| Location | Underwater in lush caves biome |
| Biomes | Lush Caves only |
| Y-Level Range | Below Y level 63 (sea level) |
| Light Level | 0 (total darkness required) |
| Required Block | A clay block must exist less than 5 blocks below the spawning space. In Java Edition, the block must have the base_stone_overworld tag (stone, deepslate, andesite, diorite, granite, or tuff) less than 5 blocks below. |
| Group Size | Java: 1–4 per spawn attempt Bedrock: 1–4 per spawn attempt |
| Weight | Axolotls are part of the underground water creature spawn category in lush caves |
| Edition Differences | In Java Edition, the blue variant has a 1 in 1,200 natural spawn chance. In Bedrock Edition (and Java 1.17.1+), the blue variant does not spawn naturally at all — it is breeding-only. Both editions require clay below the spawn point and complete darkness. |
Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs
- Targets (attacks): Cod, salmon, tropical fish, pufferfish, squid, glow squid, drowned, guardians, elder guardians. Basically anything aquatic that is not a turtle, dolphin, frog, or another axolotl.
- Attacked By: Drowned and guardians (including elder guardians) attack axolotls on sight. This is what makes them effective as ocean monument combat allies — they draw aggro while you swing your trident.
- Pufferfish Interaction: Axolotls cause nearby pufferfish to inflate as if a player were approaching. Most other aquatic mobs do not trigger this reaction.
- Boats: Axolotls can ride in boats, but they still take drying damage while in a boat. This is a common trap — players put their axolotl in a boat thinking it is safe, and then it dies five minutes later from being out of water.
- Bubble Columns: While immune to flowing water pushback, axolotls are affected by bubble columns from magma blocks and soul sand.
- Iron Golems: Iron golems do not interact with axolotls and do not defend them.
Drops & Loot
| Item | Quantity | Chance | Notes |
| Nothing | 0 | 100% | Axolotls drop no items when killed. They only drop 1–3 experience orbs when killed by a player or tamed wolf. Looting does not affect this mob’s drops because there are none. |
Yes, that table looks sparse. Axolotls are one of the few mobs in Minecraft that drop absolutely nothing — no meat, no materials, no loot. Their value is entirely in what they do alive, not dead. If you are killing axolotls, you are doing it wrong.
Player Uses & Farming
- Ocean Monument Raids: This is the axolotl’s biggest practical use. Bring a handful of bucketed axolotls into an ocean monument, release them, and let them aggro every guardian in sight. When you kill a mob the axolotl is fighting, you get Regeneration I and Mining Fatigue removal. Elder guardians go from nightmares to manageable encounters.
- Aquatic Area Clearing: Axolotls will hunt and kill fish, squid, glow squid, and drowned in any body of water. Release a few into a troublesome underwater area and they clean house.
- Blue Axolotl Breeding Farm: The most common axolotl farm is designed to mass-breed for the blue variant. Build a water enclosure in a lush caves biome, stock it with at least two adult axolotls, and feed them buckets of tropical fish repeatedly. With the 1 in 1,200 odds, expect roughly 1,200 breeding attempts on average — or about 3,600 to hit 95% statistical certainty. Bedrock players have a significant advantage here because the breeding cooldown is only 1 minute versus Java’s 5 minutes.
- Spawning Farm: Build an 8×8 spawning room in a lush caves biome below Y 63 with clay on the floor, water filling the room, and zero light. Axolotls will spawn naturally in groups of 1–4. Use hoppers and water channels to collect them, or bucket them manually.
- Tropical Fish Farming: The bottleneck for any axolotl breeding operation is tropical fish buckets. You need two per breeding attempt, and each bucket requires an iron ingot to craft. Stock up on iron and make trips to warm ocean biomes, or buy buckets from fisherman villagers.
- Transportation: Always transport axolotls in buckets of water. Do not lead them on land for long distances, do not put them in boats without water, and do not assume rain will keep them alive. Bucket is the only safe method.
Commands & NBT
Summon a default (leucistic) axolotl:
/summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~
Summon a blue axolotl in Java Edition:
/summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:4}
Summon a blue axolotl in Bedrock Edition:
/summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ minecraft:axolotl_blue
Summon a baby axolotl in Java Edition:
/summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Age:-24000}
Summon a persistent axolotl (will not despawn) in Java Edition:
/summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {FromBucket:1b}
Notable NBT keys (Java Edition):
Variant— Integer. 0 = lucy (pink), 1 = cyan, 2 = gold, 3 = wild (brown), 4 = blue.FromBucket— Boolean (1b or 0b). When set to 1b, the axolotl is persistent and will never despawn. This is automatically set when an axolotl is released from a bucket.Age— Integer. Negative values indicate a baby. -24000 is a newborn that takes 20 minutes to grow up. 0 or positive is an adult.
Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks
- Entity Tags (Java):
axolotlis tagged under#minecraft:axolotl_always_hostiles(mobs axolotls always attack, like drowned and guardians) and#minecraft:axolotl_hunt_targets(non-hostile mobs axolotls hunt, like fish and squid). The entity itself is part of#minecraft:aquatic. - Gamerule:
doMobSpawningcontrols whether axolotls spawn naturally.mobGriefingdoes not affect axolotls as they do not interact with blocks. - Loot Table Path:
minecraft:entities/axolotl— this loot table is empty by default, but datapack creators can modify it to add drops. - Spawn Category: Axolotls fall under the
underground_water_creaturespawn category, which has its own mob cap separate from passive and hostile mobs.
Difficulty & Edition Differences
- Difficulty Levels: Axolotl behavior does not change across Easy, Normal, and Hard difficulties. Their damage output, health, and spawning conditions remain identical. The enemies they fight (drowned, guardians) do scale with difficulty, which indirectly affects how useful axolotls are in combat — they die faster on Hard because the guardians hit harder.
- Blue Spawning (Java vs. Bedrock): In early Java Edition (1.17.0), blue axolotls could spawn naturally with a 1 in 1,200 chance. From Java 1.17.1 onward and in all Bedrock versions, blue axolotls are breeding-only.
- Breeding Cooldown: Java Edition has a 5-minute breeding cooldown. Bedrock Edition has a 1-minute cooldown. This is a massive difference for blue axolotl farming — Bedrock players can breed five times as fast.
- Regeneration Reward (Java vs. Bedrock): In Java Edition, killing a mob in combat with an axolotl grants Regeneration I for 5 seconds per axolotl, stacking up to 2 minutes. Bedrock Edition behavior is similar but the stacking cap may differ slightly.
- Impaling Enchantment: In Java Edition, Impaling deals extra damage to aquatic mobs including axolotls. In Bedrock Edition, Impaling only deals extra damage to mobs in contact with water, which still affects axolotls when swimming.
- Spawn Block Requirement: Java Edition requires a block with the
base_stone_overworldtag within 5 blocks below the spawn. Bedrock Edition requires clay specifically within 5 blocks below.
Sounds & Audio
Axolotl sounds were created from the tiny hiccup and burp noises real axolotls make when surfacing for air, combined with heavily edited dog sounds. Real axolotls do not vocalize, so the sound designers had to get creative.

History & Major Changes
- Minecraft Live 2020 (October 3, 2020): Axolotls announced as part of the Caves & Cliffs update. Agnes Larsson explained they were added to raise awareness about the endangered real-world species.
- Java 20w51a (December 16, 2020): Axolotls added to the game. At this point they did not spawn naturally and could only be obtained via commands, spawn eggs, or buckets.
- Java 21w13a: Axolotls now spawn naturally underwater in caves. Regeneration I and Mining Fatigue removal on player combat kills added.
- Java 1.17 (June 8, 2021): Axolotls officially released as part of Caves & Cliffs: Part I. Spawned in any underground water.
- Java 1.17.1: Blue axolotls no longer spawn naturally — now breeding-only. Textures for leucistic, cyan, gold, and blue variants updated.
- Java 1.18 (November 30, 2021): Axolotl spawning moved exclusively to lush caves biome. Total darkness and clay block requirement added. This is the major change that made axolotls significantly harder to find.
- Bedrock 1.17.0: Axolotls added to Bedrock Edition.
- Bedrock 1.17.40: Axolotls now only spawn in total darkness.
- Bedrock 1.18.0: Spawning restricted to lush caves with clay requirement, matching Java behavior.
Notable Bugs & Quirks
- Lead Speed Glitch: When led by a lead on land, axolotls move at an absurdly fast speed. This has been in the game since their addition and has never been patched. It looks ridiculous and the community generally considers it a feature at this point.
- Lily Pad Spinning: If an axolotl is spawned on top of a lily pad, it gets stuck and spins endlessly trying to reach water. It cannot pathfind off the lily pad.
- Boat Drying Death: Axolotls in boats still take drying damage despite visually being near water. Many players have lost axolotls this way.
- Play Dead on Land: The play-dead mechanic only triggers underwater. If an axolotl takes damage on land, it will not attempt to play dead.
Advancements / Achievements
- The Parrots and the Bats (Java): Breed two animals. Breeding axolotls with buckets of tropical fish triggers this advancement.
- Two by Two (Java): Breed all the animals. Axolotl breeding counts toward this advancement.
- Tactical Fishing (Java): Catch a fish in a bucket. Using a water bucket on an axolotl counts for this advancement (the game considers it a form of bucket-catching).
- The Healing Power of Friendship! (Java): Team up with an axolotl and win a fight. Triggered by killing a hostile aquatic mob while an axolotl is in combat with the same target. This grants the player Regeneration from the axolotl.
- One Pickle, Two Pickle, Sea Pickle, Four (Bedrock): Not directly related, but Bedrock achievements for aquatic activities are grouped differently from Java advancements.
Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia
- Real-World Inspiration: The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a critically endangered neotenic salamander native to Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City. Mojang added it to Minecraft specifically to raise awareness about its conservation status.
- Blue Variant Origin: The blue color variant was suggested by Reddit user Darkiceflame on r/minecraftsuggestions and is a reference to Mudkip from the Pokémon franchise.
- 1 in 1,200 Chance: The blue variant’s breeding probability (1 in 1,200) is a deliberate reference to the approximately 1,200 axolotls estimated to remain in the wild at the time of development.
- Encrypted Message: In the Minecraft Launcher release notes, an encrypted message reads “The Axolotls are not what they seem” when decoded from the Standard Galactic Alphabet. The meaning has never been officially explained.
- Sound Design: Because real axolotls are almost completely silent, the in-game sounds were created from the tiny hiccups and burps real axolotls occasionally make when surfacing, plus heavily edited dog sounds.
- First Amphibian: Axolotls were the first amphibian mob implemented in Minecraft, though frogs were technically announced first at MINECON Live 2019.
- First “A” Mob: Axolotl was the first Minecraft mob whose name begins with the letter A, followed later by the allay and armadillo.
- Green Variant Mystery: A green axolotl appeared in the Caves & Cliffs trailer but was never added. Agnes Larsson stated she could not reveal why it was cut.
- Minecraft Dungeons: Axolotls appear as pets in Minecraft Dungeons, including golden, leucistic, and wild variants.
- LEGO Sets: Multiple LEGO Minecraft sets feature axolotl minifigures in gold, cyan, and blue variants. As of 2025, no wild (brown) variant has appeared in LEGO sets.
- Music Track: C418 composed an underwater music track titled “Axolotl” before the mob was even added to the game.
