20 Min Read

Silverfish are tiny, hostile arthropod mobs that hide inside infested blocks and swarm you the moment you make the mistake of mining one. They are small, fast, annoying, and almost never worth the trouble they cause. Think of them as the game’s way of punishing you for casually mining stone in the wrong place.

You will most commonly encounter silverfish in strongholds, where they lurk inside infested stone blocks that look identical to regular stone. You mine what you think is a normal block, and suddenly a tiny grey bug pops out and starts chewing on your ankles. Hit it, and every infested block within a 21-block radius wakes up and sends reinforcements. Congratulations, you just started a bar fight with the walls.

Silverfish also spawn from monster spawners inside strongholds and occasionally generate inside infested blocks in mountain biomes. They deal almost no damage on their own, but their strength is in numbers — and they will absolutely show up in numbers if you let them.

Appearance

Silverfish are one of the smallest mobs in the game. They have a flat, segmented body with a dark grey-silver color and a subtle texture pattern that vaguely resembles scales. The model is low to the ground, about a third of a block tall, and wiggles side to side when it moves — like a centipede that skipped leg day.

Their small size makes them easy to lose track of in dark stronghold corridors, which is exactly the problem. They blend into the stone floor like they were designed to be stepped on. There are no baby or adult variants — every silverfish is the same tiny, irritating size.

When idle, they have a slight wiggling animation. When moving toward a target, they scuttle rapidly with their body undulating in a way that is deeply unpleasant if you have any feelings about bugs whatsoever.

Behavior & AI

  • Aggro: Silverfish are hostile on sight and will target any player within 16 blocks. They attack by running directly at you and dealing contact damage.
  • Swarm Mechanic: This is the big one. When a silverfish is hit but not killed, it alerts all other silverfish within a 21-block Manhattan distance. More importantly, it causes nearby infested blocks to break open, releasing additional silverfish. One careless swing can turn a single bug into a full-blown infestation in seconds.
  • Hiding Behavior: If a silverfish is not currently targeting a player and has been idle for a while, it will attempt to burrow into a nearby stone, cobblestone, stone brick, mossy stone brick, cracked stone brick, or deepslate block, converting it into an infested version. This is how infested blocks spread over time in loaded chunks.
  • Pathfinding: Silverfish pathfind directly toward the player. Their small hitbox allows them to fit through 1-block-wide gaps easily. They can also climb but do not have spider-style wall climbing.
  • Persistence: Silverfish that emerge from infested blocks or spawners follow normal despawn rules. They will despawn if the player moves more than 128 blocks away.
  • Daylight: Silverfish are not affected by sunlight. They do not burn during the day.
  • Water/Lava: Silverfish take damage from lava and will attempt to avoid it. They can swim but have no special water behavior and will drown if fully submerged for too long.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Melee Attack: Standard contact damage. They run into you. That is the entire attack. Range is approximately 1 block, cooldown is roughly 1 second between hits.
  • Summon Reinforcements: When damaged but not killed, silverfish call nearby silverfish to their location and cause infested blocks within range to break, releasing more silverfish. This is their only real ability, and it is the reason you should always one-shot them or not hit them at all.
  • Inflicted Effects: None. They deal pure damage with no status effects.
  • Immunities: None. They are vulnerable to all damage types.
  • Shield Interaction: A shield blocks silverfish melee attacks with no durability cost.
  • Knockback: Silverfish have zero knockback resistance, so any hit sends them flying. This is both satisfying and potentially dangerous if it keeps them alive long enough to summon friends.
  • Arthropod Classification: Silverfish are classified as arthropods, which means Bane of Arthropods enchantment deals bonus damage and applies Slowness IV to them. If there was ever a mob that justified keeping a Bane of Arthropods sword in your inventory, silverfish in a stronghold are it.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Strongholds (monster spawner in the End portal room), infested blocks (strongholds, mountain biomes, igloo basements, woodland mansions)
Biomes Any biome containing a stronghold. Infested blocks also generate naturally in windswept hills, windswept gravelly hills, windswept forest, meadow, and stony peaks biomes.
Y-Level Range Strongholds: typically Y -10 to Y 40. Mountain infested blocks: surface level up to Y 320 depending on terrain.
Light Level Spawner: any light level. Infested blocks: any light level (the silverfish emerges when the block is mined, regardless of conditions).
Required Block Spawner requires no specific block below. Infested blocks must be stone, cobblestone, stone bricks, mossy stone bricks, cracked stone bricks, or deepslate.
Group Size Java: Spawner spawns 1-4 at a time
Bedrock: Spawner spawns 1-4 at a time
Weight Not applicable — silverfish do not naturally spawn through the mob spawning cycle. They only come from spawners or broken infested blocks.
Edition Differences Spawning mechanics are functionally identical between Java and Bedrock. Infested blocks generate in the same structures and biomes on both editions.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Infested Blocks: Silverfish have a unique relationship with certain blocks. They can enter stone, cobblestone, stone bricks (and variants), and deepslate to create infested versions. These infested blocks look identical to their normal counterparts but break slightly slower and drop nothing when mined — only the silverfish pops out.
  • Iron Golems: Iron golems will attack silverfish on sight. This is mildly entertaining to watch but rarely useful in practice since silverfish and golems almost never occupy the same space.
  • Other Mobs: Silverfish are ignored by most other hostile mobs. They do not interact with creepers, zombies, skeletons, or other common hostiles.
  • Endermites: Silverfish attack endermites on sight. This is one of the few mob-vs-mob aggression triggers in the game that does not involve the player at all.
  • Boats/Minecarts: Silverfish can be captured in boats and minecarts like most mobs, though there is almost no practical reason to do this.
  • Warden: Silverfish can trigger sculk sensors with their movement, potentially alerting the warden. In the deep dark, this is yet another reason to hate them.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Nothing 0 100% Silverfish drop no items. No amount of Looting will change this. They exist purely to inconvenience you.
Experience 5 XP Guaranteed on player kill Only drops when killed by a player or tamed wolf. The 5 XP is the only reward for dealing with these things.

Player Uses & Farming

  • XP Farming: Silverfish spawners in strongholds can be converted into XP farms. The spawner in the End portal room is the most common candidate. Build a collection chamber, funnel them into a kill zone, and hit them one at a time. The XP per mob is decent at 5 orbs each, and the spawner produces them reliably.
  • Farm Design Basics: Surround the spawner with a small room (no larger than 9×9×3 to stay within spawner range). Use water streams to push silverfish into a central drop or collection point. A 1-block-wide slit lets you melee them without them reaching you. Avoid splash damage methods — if you damage one without killing it, it may summon reinforcements from any infested blocks in the area.
  • Bane of Arthropods: A sword with Bane of Arthropods V one-shots silverfish easily, making it the ideal weapon for farming. The Slowness IV effect it applies also prevents them from scattering if you somehow fail to kill one in a single hit.
  • Identifying Infested Blocks: In Java Edition, infested blocks break slightly slower than normal when mined with a pickaxe but faster when mined by hand. In Bedrock Edition, infested blocks always break instantly regardless of tool. This hand-mining speed difference is the easiest way to spot them on Java.
  • Silk Touch: Mining an infested block with Silk Touch drops the normal version of the block without spawning a silverfish. This is the safest way to clear infested areas if you want to avoid swarms entirely.
  • Stronghold Navigation Trick: Some players deliberately mine suspicious stone blocks by hand to check for silverfish. If the block breaks faster than it should with no tool, it is infested. This trick helps you find and clear infested blocks before they become a problem during the Ender Dragon fight prep.

Commands & NBT

/summon minecraft:silverfish ~ ~ ~
/summon minecraft:silverfish ~ ~ ~ {Health:100f,Attributes:[{Name:"generic.max_health",Base:100}]}
/summon minecraft:silverfish ~ ~ ~ {NoAI:1b}
  • Health — Current health value. Default is 8.0f.
  • NoAI — Set to 1b to freeze the silverfish in place. Useful for decorative purposes or controlled testing.
  • PersistenceRequired — Set to 1b to prevent the silverfish from despawning.
  • Silent — Set to 1b to mute all sounds from the silverfish.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Type Tags: minecraft:silverfish is a member of the #minecraft:arthropod tag, which governs Bane of Arthropods behavior.
  • Mob Category: Classified as a monster for mob cap purposes.
  • Gamerule — mobGriefing: When set to false, silverfish cannot enter blocks to create infested versions. This completely disables their hiding/burrowing behavior.
  • Loot Table: minecraft:entities/silverfish — The default table is empty (no drops). Can be overridden via datapack to add custom drops.
  • Infested Block Tags: All infested blocks belong to the #minecraft:infested_blocks block tag, which is useful for custom /fill or /execute commands.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Damage Scaling: Silverfish deal 1 damage (0.5 hearts) on Easy and Normal, and 1.5 damage (0.75 hearts) on Hard. The damage increase is minimal — the real danger scaling is that more mobs spawn and they are more aggressive on higher difficulties.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Infested Block Detection: On Java Edition, infested blocks break more slowly with a pickaxe and faster by hand compared to their normal counterparts. On Bedrock Edition, infested blocks break instantly regardless of tool, making them harder to identify before mining.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Spawner Behavior: Spawner mechanics are nearly identical on both editions. Minor tick-rate differences may affect exact spawn timing, but the practical outcome is the same.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Reinforcement Call: The swarm-summoning mechanic works the same way on both editions, but the exact block search radius for infested blocks may vary slightly due to rounding in pathfinding calculations.

Sounds & Audio

  • Ambient: entity.silverfish.ambient — A faint, skittering chittering sound. Quiet enough that you might not notice it until there are several of them.
  • Hurt: entity.silverfish.hurt — A short, high-pitched squeal.
  • Death: entity.silverfish.death — A slightly longer version of the hurt sound with a dying fade.
  • Step: entity.silverfish.step — Rapid, light footsteps. Multiple silverfish stepping at once creates the unsettling sound of a swarm closing in.

History & Major Changes

  • Beta 1.8 (September 2011): Silverfish added to the game alongside strongholds. Initially could only spawn from the End portal room spawner and infested stone blocks within strongholds.
  • Java 1.0 (November 2011): Infested stone bricks added as part of stronghold generation refinements.
  • Java 1.1 (January 2012): Silverfish spawning expanded. Infested blocks now generate in extreme hills (now windswept hills) biomes, giving mountain explorers an unwelcome surprise.
  • Java 1.4.2 (October 2012): Silverfish added to superflat world customization options.
  • Java 1.17 (June 2021): Infested deepslate added. Infested blocks now take slightly longer to mine than their normal counterparts (instead of the same time), making them marginally easier to detect. Infested blocks no longer drop their block form — only the silverfish.
  • Java 1.18 (November 2021): Stronghold generation depth adjusted due to world height changes, affecting where silverfish spawners appear.
  • Java 1.21 (June 2024): No major silverfish-specific changes, but general mob AI improvements apply.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • The Silent Infestation: Silverfish that burrow into blocks do so silently and without any visual indicator. A stronghold that has been loaded for a long time can have significantly more infested blocks than when it originally generated, because idle silverfish keep converting regular stone into infested stone. Leaving a stronghold loaded in the background is basically letting the silverfish redecorate at their own pace.
  • Suffocation Immunity (Historical): In older versions, silverfish could sometimes avoid suffocation damage due to their small hitbox clipping through blocks. This has been largely fixed but can still occasionally occur at block boundaries.
  • Spawner Location: The silverfish spawner in the End portal room is one of the few spawners in the game that many players deliberately leave intact for farming, rather than destroying immediately.

Advancements / Achievements

  • Monster Hunter (Java): Kill any hostile mob. Silverfish count toward this advancement.
  • Monsters Hunted (Java): Kill one of every hostile mob. Silverfish are on the checklist, so you need to kill at least one to complete it.
  • Monster Hunter (Bedrock): Kill a hostile mob. Silverfish qualify.
  • Adventure Time (Java): Visit all biomes. Not directly related to silverfish, but you will likely encounter infested blocks in mountain biomes while working toward this.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Real-World Inspiration: Silverfish in Minecraft are loosely based on the real-world silverfish insect (Lepisma saccharina), a small, wingless insect known for infesting buildings and eating paper, glue, and starchy materials. The Minecraft version captures the “suddenly there are a bunch of them in your house” energy perfectly.
  • Infested Block Trap: Some players use infested blocks as traps on multiplayer servers. Building a floor or wall out of infested stone bricks looks completely normal until someone mines it — then chaos.
  • The Most Annoying Mob Debate: Silverfish consistently rank among the most annoying mobs in community polls, usually competing with phantoms and baby zombies. They deal almost no damage and drop nothing, but the swarm mechanic and the fact that they hide inside blocks makes them uniquely frustrating.
  • Minecraft Dungeons: Silverfish appear in Minecraft Dungeons as minor enemies, behaving similarly to their main-game counterparts — small, fast, and showing up in groups.
  • Endermite Rivalry: Silverfish attack endermites on sight, which is one of the more obscure mob interaction facts in the game. Nobody is entirely sure why they hate each other, but the leading theory in the community is that endermites were originally planned to be related to silverfish in some way.
