Warden

The Warden is the single most terrifying thing Mojang has ever added to Minecraft, and that includes the entire concept of Hardcore mode. This is not a mob you fight. This is a mob you avoid, sneak past, and pray does not notice you exist. Standing over three blocks tall and hitting harder than any other mob in the game — including the Ender Dragon and the Wither — the Warden is a blind, rage-fueled nightmare that hunts entirely by sound and smell.

Found exclusively in the deep dark biome, the Warden does not spawn naturally on its own. It is summoned by sculk shriekers when a player triggers them too many times, rising out of the ground like something from a horror movie. Once it arrives, you have one job: do not make noise. Do not attack it. Do not try to be a hero. The Warden has 500 health points (250 hearts), which is more than the Ender Dragon and the Wither combined. Your diamond sword is a toothpick to this thing.

The Warden was added in the 1.19 Wild Update and represents a completely unique design philosophy — a mob built not to be defeated, but to be feared. It is the game telling you, in no uncertain terms, that not everything underground belongs to you.

Appearance

The Warden is enormous. At 2.9 blocks tall, it towers over the player and most other mobs in the game. Its body is a dark teal color, covered in sculk-like textures that make it look like it grew straight out of the deep dark biome itself. The chest has a glowing core that pulses with a teal bioluminescent light, and that glow intensifies as the Warden becomes more agitated — which is a very helpful visual cue that things are about to go badly for you.

It has no eyes. That is not a design oversight — it is completely blind and the exposed ribcage-like structure on its head contains the soul-like tendrils that function as its sensory organs. The tendrils on top of its head move and twitch in response to vibrations, giving you a visual indicator of what it is detecting.

When emerging from the ground, the Warden claws its way up through the floor in an animation that takes about 6.7 seconds. When it despawns, it burrows back down the same way. The heartbeat sound it produces gets faster as its anger level rises, and the bioluminescent spots across its body flicker more intensely the closer it gets to attacking.

Behavior & AI

The Warden has one of the most sophisticated AI systems of any mob in Minecraft, built around a unique anger mechanic that makes it genuinely unpredictable and dangerous. Understanding how it detects, tracks, and decides to attack you is the difference between looting an ancient city and losing everything.

  • Blind but deadly: The Warden cannot see. It detects players through vibrations (sound events) within 16 blocks and through sniffing within 20 blocks horizontally and 6 blocks vertically. It does not care about line of sight because it does not use sight at all.
  • Anger system: The Warden tracks an internal anger value for each entity it detects. Vibrations increase anger by 10, getting sniffed increases anger by 35, and direct contact (touching or attacking it) increases anger by 100. Once anger reaches 80, the Warden locks on and attacks. Anger decreases by 1 per second when not detecting anything from that entity.
  • Three detection phases: The Warden cycles through calm, agitated, and angry states. Its heartbeat sound and chest glow intensity change with each phase, giving you audio and visual warning before it commits to attacking.
  • Vibration priority: Not all sounds are equal. Projectile impacts, player footsteps, block placement, and container interactions all register as vibrations. Sneaking reduces your vibration output, and wool blocks completely absorb vibrations — they are your best friend in the deep dark.
  • Sniffing: Every 5 seconds, the Warden sniffs the air. If a player is within range, this adds 35 anger toward that player. Sneaking does not prevent sniffing detection — only distance matters.
  • Darkness effect: The Warden inflicts the Darkness status effect on all players within 20 blocks every 6 seconds. This effect reduces your visibility to almost nothing, shrinking your render distance dramatically. It is disorienting and terrifying by design.
  • Digging and despawning: If the Warden does not detect any vibrations for 60 seconds, it burrows back into the ground and despawns. It also digs down immediately if it touches water or is in a liquid. The Warden will not persist indefinitely — stay quiet long enough and it goes away.
  • Pathfinding: The Warden can pathfind across most terrain, break through obstacles indirectly by shoving mobs out of the way, and will not fall for simple pillar-up strategies because of its ranged sonic boom attack. It is immune to knockback, so you cannot push it into pits either.
  • Persistence: The Warden does not naturally despawn like normal hostile mobs. It only leaves by burrowing into the ground after 60 seconds of inactivity, or by dying (good luck with that).

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

The Warden has two attacks, and both of them will ruin your day. Its melee hit is the hardest-hitting attack from any non-boss mob in the game, and its ranged attack ignores every defensive measure you own.

  • Melee attack: Deals 30 damage (15 hearts) on Normal difficulty. This can kill a player in full netherite armor in two hits. The attack has a short cooldown of about 0.9 seconds and can disable shields for 5 seconds (Java Edition). On Hard, a single melee hit deals 45 damage (22.5 hearts), which is enough to one-shot an unarmored player twice over.
  • Sonic boom (ranged): When the Warden cannot reach its target within melee range for a few seconds, it fires a sonic boom — a visible shockwave that travels in a straight line up to 15 blocks. This attack deals 10 damage (5 hearts) on Normal and bypasses armor, shields, enchantments, and the Resistance effect entirely. There is no way to reduce this damage except the Protection enchantment in Bedrock Edition. The sonic boom has a 5-second cooldown.
  • Shield interaction: In Java Edition, the Warden’s melee attack disables shields for 5 seconds, just like an axe attack. Shields do not block the sonic boom at all.
  • Darkness effect: The Warden passively inflicts Darkness on nearby players every 6 seconds within a 20-block radius. This is not an attack but a constant environmental hazard that limits visibility and creates panic.
  • Knockback immunity: 100% knockback resistance. You cannot push, pull, or reposition the Warden with any attack, enchantment, or piston. It goes where it wants to go.
  • Lava and fire immunity: The Warden is immune to fire and lava damage. Do not bother leading it into a lava pool — it will walk through it and still hit you.
  • Suffocation immunity: The Warden cannot take suffocation damage. Burying it in blocks does not work.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Deep Dark biome — summoned by sculk shriekers, not natural spawning
Biomes Deep Dark
Y-Level Range Typically below Y=-1, wherever the deep dark biome generates (commonly Y=-20 to Y=-50)
Light Level Any — light level does not affect spawning. The sculk shrieker triggers the summon regardless of light.
Required Block Sculk shrieker with can_summon tag set to true (only naturally generated shriekers have this tag)
Group Size 1 — only one Warden can exist within a 48-block radius. A shrieker will not summon another if one is already present.
Trigger Mechanism A sculk shrieker must be activated 4 times total (player receives a warning level 0-3). On the 4th activation (warning level 3), the Warden is summoned. Warning level decreases by 1 every 10 minutes without triggering a shrieker.
Edition Differences Spawning mechanics are functionally identical between Java and Bedrock editions.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

The Warden does not just hunt players. It reacts to any entity that produces vibrations or gets too close, which leads to some chaotic interactions in the deep dark.

  • Mob targeting: The Warden will attack any mob that triggers its anger threshold, not just players. Other hostile mobs, passive mobs, and even other Wardens can become targets if they make enough noise. This can be exploited by throwing projectiles to redirect its attention.
  • Projectile distraction: Throwing snowballs, eggs, or arrows away from your position creates vibrations at the impact point, which the Warden investigates. This is the primary strategy for navigating around an active Warden — throw distractions and sneak past while it walks the other way.
  • Iron Golems: An Iron Golem will fight a Warden if provoked, but this fight is almost comically one-sided. The Warden will destroy an Iron Golem in a few hits. Do not rely on golems for protection.
  • Water behavior: If the Warden touches water or enters any liquid, it immediately begins its burrowing animation and despawns. This is one of the few reliable ways to make a Warden disappear on demand — lure it into water.
  • Sculk interaction: The Warden does not interact with sculk sensors or sculk catalysts in any special way. Its footsteps do produce vibrations that can trigger sculk sensors, which can chain into more shrieker activations if you are unlucky.
  • Boats and minecarts: The Warden cannot be trapped in boats or minecarts. It is immune to this classic mob-control strategy.
  • Wool: The Warden’s vibration detection is blocked by wool blocks. Vibrations cannot pass through wool, making it the most important block in the deep dark. Carpet also works. Build wool pathways and walls if you are planning a serious ancient city raid.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Sculk Catalyst 1 100% Always drops exactly 1 sculk catalyst on death. This is the only guaranteed drop.
Experience 5 XP 100% Drops only 5 XP when killed by a player. For a mob with 500 HP, this is intentionally terrible — Mojang does not want you farming these.

Player Uses & Farming

Let us be direct about this: the Warden is not meant to be farmed, and the game is designed to discourage it at every turn. The drops are bad, the XP is laughable, and the risk-to-reward ratio is the worst in the game. That said, here is what you should actually know.

  • Sculk catalyst source: Killing a Warden gives you a sculk catalyst, which you can also get by mining one in the deep dark with Silk Touch. There is no reason to fight a Warden for this item when you can just pick one up off the ground.
  • Ancient city loot: The real value of the deep dark is the ancient city loot chests, which contain swift sneak enchantments, echo shards for crafting recovery compasses, ward armor trim smithing templates, silence armor trim smithing templates, and other rare items. The Warden is the obstacle between you and those chests, not the prize itself.
  • Avoidance strategy: Bring wool blocks, wool carpet, and snowballs. Place wool on floors and walls to block vibrations. Throw snowballs to distract any Warden that spawns. Sneak everywhere. Do not sprint, do not break blocks near sculk sensors, and do not open chests near active shriekers without clearing them first.
  • Shrieker deactivation: You can break sculk shriekers with a hoe (fastest tool) to prevent Warden spawns. Clear shriekers in an area before looting. Player-placed shriekers do not have the can_summon tag, so only naturally generated ones are a threat.
  • Kill methods (if you insist): The most reliable way to kill a Warden involves trapping it in a deep pit and using ranged attacks from beyond its sonic boom range (more than 15 blocks away). TNT, end crystals, and large amounts of arrows can eventually bring it down. Expect it to take a very long time and a lot of resources. A fully enchanted bow with Power V deals minimal damage relative to its 500 HP pool.

Commands & NBT

Here are the most useful commands for spawning and customizing Wardens in Java Edition. These are handy for map makers, testing, or just seeing what this thing does up close in Creative mode.

/summon minecraft:warden ~ ~ ~

Summons a Warden at your position. It will immediately begin detecting vibrations and sniffing. Make sure you are in Creative mode or prepared to die.

/summon minecraft:warden ~ ~ ~ {AngerLevel:80}

Summons a Warden that is already fully angry and will immediately attack the nearest entity. Useful for testing combat scenarios.

/summon minecraft:warden ~ ~ ~ {PersistenceRequired:1b}

Summons a Warden that will not burrow and despawn due to inactivity. It will stay above ground indefinitely.

  • AngerLevel: Integer value controlling the Warden’s anger state. 0 = calm, 80+ = attacking. Can be set per-entity using the anger management system.
  • anger: Compound tag containing the per-entity anger tracking data. Each suspected entity has its own anger value stored here.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity type tag: minecraft:warden — can be referenced in @e[type=minecraft:warden] selectors.
  • Mob category: Falls under the monster mob category for spawn cap purposes, though it does not count toward the regular hostile mob cap since it is summoned by shriekers.
  • Loot table: minecraft:entities/warden — can be overridden in datapacks to customize drops.
  • Entity tags: The Warden is included in the following entity type tags:
    • #minecraft:can_breathe_under_water — though it despawns on water contact, this tag exists
    • #minecraft:freeze_immune_entity_types — immune to powder snow freezing
  • Gamerule doMobSpawning: Setting this to false prevents sculk shriekers from summoning the Warden.
  • Gamerule mobGriefing: The Warden’s sonic boom can destroy certain blocks if mobGriefing is true (though block destruction from sonic boom is minimal).

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Easy difficulty: Melee deals 16 damage (8 hearts). Sonic boom deals 6 damage (3 hearts). Still extremely dangerous for unprepared players, but survivable in full netherite.
  • Normal difficulty: Melee deals 30 damage (15 hearts). Sonic boom deals 10 damage (5 hearts). Two melee hits will kill most armored players. The sonic boom bypasses all armor.
  • Hard difficulty: Melee deals 45 damage (22.5 hearts). Sonic boom deals 15 damage (7.5 hearts). A single melee hit can kill a player without full Protection IV netherite armor. This is the hardest-hitting melee attack from any mob in the game.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — melee: In Java Edition, the Warden’s melee attack disables shields for 5 seconds. In Bedrock Edition, shields are simply bypassed entirely since Bedrock does not have the shield disable mechanic.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — sonic boom: In Java Edition, the sonic boom ignores all armor, enchantments, shields, and the Resistance effect. In Bedrock Edition, Protection enchantments can reduce sonic boom damage slightly.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — spawning: The sculk shrieker warning system and Warden summoning mechanics are functionally identical between editions.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Darkness effect: The visual implementation of Darkness varies slightly between editions, but the mechanical effect (reduced visibility within 20 blocks) is the same.

Sounds & Audio

The Warden has some of the best sound design in Minecraft. Its audio cues are not just atmospheric — they are survival information. Learn what each sound means and you can gauge its state without ever seeing it.

  • Ambient (calm): entity.warden.ambient — low rumbling sound, slow heartbeat. Indicates the Warden is in its passive state.
  • Heartbeat: entity.warden.heartbeat — increases in speed as the Warden’s anger level rises. The faster the heartbeat, the closer you are to being attacked.
  • Agitated: entity.warden.agitated — deeper, more frequent growling. The Warden is actively suspicious and sniffing.
  • Angry: entity.warden.angry — roaring and aggressive vocalizations. It has locked on to a target and is about to attack.
  • Listening: entity.warden.listening — subtle clicking sound when the Warden detects a vibration and turns toward the source.
  • Sniff: entity.warden.sniff — distinct sniffing sound played every 5 seconds during its detection cycle.
  • Sonic boom: entity.warden.sonic_boom — a deep, resonant blast sound. If you hear this, it is already too late to dodge.
  • Hurt: entity.warden.hurt — surprisingly restrained for a mob this large.
  • Death: entity.warden.death — prolonged fading groan as it collapses.
  • Emerge: entity.warden.emerge — the sound of it clawing out of the ground. Takes about 6.7 seconds.
  • Dig: entity.warden.dig — the burrowing sound when it despawns underground.
  • Roar: entity.warden.roar — played when it first locks onto a target before engaging in combat.

History & Major Changes

  • Minecraft Live 2020: The Warden was first announced during the Caves & Cliffs preview. It was originally planned for 1.17 alongside the deep dark biome.
  • 1.17 (Caves & Cliffs Part 1): The Warden and deep dark biome were delayed and did not appear in this update.
  • 1.18 (Caves & Cliffs Part 2): Still no Warden. The deep dark biome and Warden were pushed to 1.19 for additional development time.
  • 1.19 (The Wild Update): The Warden was officially added alongside the deep dark biome, ancient cities, sculk blocks, and the entire sensor/shrieker/catalyst ecosystem. Java Edition 1.19 and Bedrock Edition 1.19.0 both received the Warden simultaneously.
  • 1.19 snapshots and betas: During development, the Warden’s sonic boom attack was added after playtesting showed that players could easily pillar up and attack it with ranged weapons. The sonic boom was specifically designed to counter cheese strategies.
  • 22w15a (snapshot): The sonic boom was added, and the Warden’s behavior was refined significantly. The anger system was tuned to its current values.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Water despawn exploit: Luring a Warden into even a single block of water causes it to immediately start burrowing and despawn. This is technically intentional behavior but feels like an exploit given how easy it is to place a water bucket.
  • Anger persistence through dimensions: The Warden’s anger data is entity-specific, so fleeing through a nether portal does not reset its anger — it will still be angry if you return before the anger decays naturally.
  • Vibration through unloaded chunks: In some edge cases, vibration detection can behave oddly near chunk borders, particularly in multiplayer where chunk loading is inconsistent.
  • Creative mode detection: The Warden can still detect players in Creative mode through vibrations and sniffing, though it will not deal damage. It will still chase and attempt to attack, which can be disorienting during testing.
  • Stacking sonic booms: If multiple Wardens exist (via commands) and all fire sonic booms simultaneously, the damage stacks and can instantly kill even a player with maximum health and armor.

Advancements / Achievements

  • “Sneak 100” (Java Edition advancement): Triggered by sneaking near a sculk sensor or Warden without being detected. The advancement ID is minecraft:adventure/avoid_vibration. You must sneak within 8 blocks of a sculk sensor, sculk shrieker, or Warden without triggering it.
  • “Caves & Cliffs” (Bedrock Edition achievement): Related to the deep dark exploration but not specifically Warden-focused.
  • “It Spreads” (Java Edition advancement): Kill a mob near a sculk catalyst, which the Warden drops. Advancement ID: minecraft:adventure/kill_mob_near_sculk_catalyst.
  • No advancement for killing the Warden: Mojang intentionally did not add an advancement for killing the Warden. This reinforces their design philosophy that you are supposed to avoid it, not fight it.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Design inspiration: The Warden was inspired by the concept of a mob that makes the player feel genuinely afraid in a game that is not traditionally a horror title. Lead developer kingbdogz described it as a “natural disaster” rather than a traditional enemy.
  • Most health in the game: With 500 HP, the Warden has more health than the Ender Dragon (200 HP) and the Wither (300 HP on Java, 600 HP on Bedrock). It is the tankiest mob in Java Edition by a significant margin.
  • Not a boss mob: Despite its stats, the Warden is classified as a regular hostile mob. It does not have a boss health bar, does not drop unique items (beyond the sculk catalyst), and is not tied to any progression gate.
  • Intentionally unrewarding: The 5 XP drop and single sculk catalyst drop were deliberately chosen to discourage farming. Mojang wanted the Warden to be a threat, not a resource.
  • Community reaction: The Warden’s announcement generated massive discussion about whether a “do not fight” mob belongs in Minecraft. It remains one of the most polarizing additions to the game.
  • Sonic boom counter-cheese origin: The sonic boom was added specifically because early playtesters kept pillar-jumping to 4 blocks high and shooting the Warden with arrows. Mojang added the ranged attack to punish exactly this behavior.
  • Sculk ecosystem lore: The deep dark biome and its sculk blocks are heavily implied to represent the remains of an ancient civilization consumed by the sculk. The Warden appears to be a guardian of this dead world, which explains why it protects the ancient cities so aggressively.
