The Breeze is what happens when Mojang looks at the Blaze and says, “What if we made that, but instead of fire, it just ruins your day with wind?” Added in the 1.21 Tricky Trials update, the Breeze is a hostile mob that spawns exclusively inside trial chambers and attacks by launching wind charge projectiles at anything that looks at it funny. It does not burn you. It does not poison you. It picks you up and throws you off a ledge. That is its entire personality.

If you have ever fought a Blaze in a Nether Fortress and thought “this would be worse if it bounced around like a caffeinated rubber ball,” then congratulations, you have imagined the Breeze. This thing does not walk. It does not fly in a straight line. It compresses itself like a spring, launches across the room, and starts shooting wind charges before you can even figure out where it landed. The direct damage is laughable — about half a heart — but the knockback is the real killer. Trial chambers are full of elevated platforms, trap doors, and buttons, and the Breeze knows exactly how to use every single one of them against you.

The Breeze drops breeze rods on death, which are essential for crafting wind charges and the Mace — one of the strongest melee weapons in the game. So yes, you need to fight this windy little menace. And no, you cannot shoot it with arrows. They bounce off. Put the bow away.

Appearance

The Breeze looks like the Blaze’s cooler cousin who moved out of the Nether and discovered air conditioning. Its head is split into two colors — bright purple on top and dark blue on the bottom — with two eyes featuring yellow scleras, black pupils, and big white bushy eyebrows that look like tiny clouds. The expression it gives off is permanent annoyance, like it just found out you exist and is already disappointed.

Beneath the head sit three rods arranged vertically, identical in structure to blaze rods but visually distinct. These are breeze rods, and they serve as the mob’s core body. Surrounding the rods is a constant swirling animation that resembles a small tornado or wind tunnel. The whole thing hovers just above the ground, gently bobbing, which makes it look simultaneously menacing and weirdly graceful.

There is no baby variant, no color variants, and no seasonal outfits. What you see is what you get — a floating, furious wind elemental that looks like it was assembled from spare Blaze parts and a leaf blower.

Behavior & AI

  • Targeting: The Breeze is hostile toward players and iron golems. It detects targets within a 16-block radius and immediately begins its attack cycle once it locks on.
  • Movement: The Breeze does not walk or fly conventionally. It compresses itself like a spring and launches forward in a leaping motion, covering up to 15 blocks horizontally and 5 blocks vertically in a single jump. If it is in lava, it can only jump 1 block into the air.
  • Attack Pattern: After landing from a leap, the Breeze begins shooting wind charges at its target. It fires, repositions with another leap, and fires again. This pattern keeps it constantly moving and extremely difficult to pin down.
  • Close-Range Behavior: If a player closes the distance to within 1-2 blocks, the Breeze stops attacking entirely. It has no melee attack whatsoever. At close range, it will attempt to leap away and re-establish distance. This is its biggest weakness.
  • Idle Behavior: When no target is present, the Breeze hovers in place, gently bobbing. It does not wander or patrol.
  • Persistence: Breezes spawned from trial spawners are persistent — they do not despawn, even if you leave the area. You have to kill them to clear the trial.
  • Neutral Mob Interactions: The Breeze will not retaliate against attacks from skeletons, strays, bogged, zombies, husks, spiders, cave spiders, or slimes. These mobs also will not retaliate when accidentally hit by a Breeze wind charge. It is a mutual non-aggression pact that somehow makes your life harder.
  • Water and Lava: Water does not damage the Breeze but pushes it around. Fire and lava both deal damage to it normally. Dispensed fire charges also work.
  • Daylight: Light level has no effect on the Breeze. It does not burn in sunlight, since it only spawns from trial spawners underground.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Wind Charge (Ranged Attack): The Breeze fires a wind charge projectile at its target. On a direct hit, it deals approximately 1 damage (half a heart). The real threat is what happens next.
  • Wind Burst (Area of Effect): When a wind charge hits an entity or a block, it creates a wind burst that knocks back all nearby entities. The knockback radius and strength from a Breeze’s wind charge is significantly larger than a player-crafted wind charge. This burst can launch players several blocks into the air, causing potentially lethal fall damage.
  • Redstone Interaction: The wind burst can toggle non-iron doors, trapdoors, fence gates, and levers. It can activate buttons and ring bells. It can extinguish lit candles. It breaks decorated pots and chorus flowers. Trial chambers are specifically designed with these redstone components scattered around, meaning the Breeze can activate trap dispensers filled with arrows, fire charges, and other surprises.
  • Projectile Immunity: The Breeze is completely immune to arrows, thrown tridents, snowballs, eggs, and all other projectiles except wind charges. Projectiles are deflected away at the same velocity, potentially hitting other entities including you. This is not a damage reduction — it is a full immunity with a nasty redirect.
  • Wind Charge Deflection: Players can deflect a Breeze’s wind charge back at it by hitting it with a melee weapon or another projectile, similar to deflecting ghast fireballs. Timing is key.
  • Fall Damage Immunity: The Breeze takes no fall damage, much like cats. Knocking it off a ledge accomplishes nothing except giving it a better vantage point to shoot you from.
  • Partial Invisibility Immunity: Applying invisibility to a Breeze hides its head and rods, but the wind particles and glowing eyebrow effects remain visible. So it is still easy to spot, making invisibility essentially useless against it.
  • Shield Interaction: A shield can block the direct hit damage from a wind charge without taking durability damage. However, the wind burst knockback can still affect you.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Trial Chambers (Overworld only)
Biomes Any biome where trial chambers generate underground — not biome-dependent
Y-Level Range Trial chambers generate primarily between Y -20 and Y -40
Light Level Not applicable — spawns from trial spawners regardless of light level
Required Block Trial spawner surrounded by chiseled tuff blocks (distinguishes Breeze spawners from other trial spawners)
Group Size Single-player: spawns 1 at a time, up to 2 total per spawner cycle before 30-minute cooldown
Multiplayer: additional mobs spawn based on number of players within 14 blocks of the trial spawner (up to 6 active mobs total)
Weight Fixed spawn from dedicated trial spawner — not part of normal mob spawning weight tables
Edition Differences Behavior and spawning mechanics are functionally identical across Java and Bedrock editions. Breeze spawners display a rotating miniature Breeze inside them on both editions.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Iron Golems: The Breeze is hostile toward iron golems and will actively attack them. Iron golems are one of the few mobs that can tank the wind charge knockback without much trouble, making them a viable distraction.
  • Trial Chamber Mobs: The Breeze has a non-aggression pact with skeletons, strays, bogged, zombies, husks, spiders, cave spiders, and slimes. If a Breeze accidentally hits one of these mobs with a wind charge, neither mob retaliates. This means you cannot bait other trial chamber mobs into fighting the Breeze for you.
  • Redstone Environment: The Breeze is designed to work with the trial chamber environment. Its wind burst toggles redstone components, meaning it can open trap doors beneath you, flip levers that activate dispensers loaded with arrows or fire charges, and generally turn the room against you. The rooms are not randomly assembled — they are built to give the Breeze home-field advantage.
  • Boats and Minecarts: A Breeze can be placed in a boat or minecart. While in a boat, it loses the ability to jump and attack, though it can still turn. This is likely unintended behavior and could change in future updates.
  • Deflected Projectiles: When the Breeze deflects arrows or other projectiles, those projectiles retain their velocity and can hit other entities, including the player who shot them. Skeletons firing at a Breeze effectively become a hazard to everything except the Breeze.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Breeze Rod 1–2 100% Guaranteed drop on player kill or tamed wolf kill only. Looting increases the maximum by 1 per level: Looting I gives 1–3, Looting II gives 1–4, Looting III gives 1–5. Deaths caused by environmental damage (lava, fall damage from player-placed blocks) do not count as player kills and will not drop rods.
Experience Orbs 5 100% Dropped on player kill or tamed wolf kill. Not affected by Looting enchantment.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Breeze Rod Crafting: Breeze rods are used to craft wind charges (1 breeze rod = 4 wind charges), the Mace (1 breeze rod + 1 heavy core), and to duplicate the flow armor trim smithing template. You can also use breeze rods to repair a Mace in an anvil.
  • Wind Charges: Player-thrown wind charges deal no damage to the player and negate fall damage when used for self-launching, making them a fantastic mobility tool for parkour, building, and exploration.
  • Farming Difficulty: Breeze farming is significantly harder than farming most other mobs. Breezes only spawn from trial spawners, which have a 30-minute cooldown between cycles. You cannot break or move trial spawners. The kill must be attributed to a player or tamed wolf — environmental kills do not drop loot.
  • Tamed Wolf Farms: The most efficient Breeze farms use tamed wolves equipped with armor to kill Breezes, since wolf kills still count as player kills for loot purposes. Thorns-enchanted armor on the player can also trigger player kill credit when the Breeze’s wind charge hits you.
  • Multi-Chamber Rotation: Some players travel between multiple trial chambers on a 30-minute rotation to maximize breeze rod yield. Bringing friends increases the number of Breezes spawned per cycle.
  • Mace Crafting Priority: The Mace is one of the strongest weapons in the game and requires a breeze rod plus a heavy core (from ominous vaults). Getting breeze rods is the easier half of that equation.

Commands & NBT

You can summon a Breeze anywhere using commands. Here are common examples:

/summon minecraft:breeze ~ ~ ~

Summon a Breeze at your current position.

/summon minecraft:breeze ~ ~ ~ {NoAI:1b}

Summon a Breeze with no AI — it will not move or attack. Useful for display builds or testing.

/summon minecraft:breeze ~ ~ ~ {Silent:1b}

Summon a silent Breeze. No ambient sounds, no attack sounds. Perfect for when you want wind without the noise.

/summon minecraft:breeze ~ ~5 ~ {Glowing:1b}

Summon a glowing Breeze 5 blocks above you. The glowing outline makes it easier to track in dark trial chambers or custom maps.

Notable NBT keys for the Breeze:

  • Health — Current health value (default 30.0f)
  • NoAI — Disables all AI behavior when set to 1b
  • Silent — Disables all sounds when set to 1b
  • Invulnerable — Makes the Breeze immune to all damage when set to 1b
  • PersistenceRequired — Prevents despawning (already true for trial spawner Breezes)
  • Glowing — Adds a glowing outline visible through walls when set to 1b

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Tags (Java): The Breeze is included in the #minecraft:deflects_projectiles and #minecraft:immune_to_oozing entity type tags. It is not part of the #minecraft:undead tag — potions of harming deal damage and potions of healing restore health, as expected for a living mob.
  • Gamerules: doMobLoot controls whether breeze rods drop. mobGriefing affects whether the wind burst can interact with redstone components and break blocks like decorated pots.
  • Loot Table Path (Java): minecraft:entities/breeze — this can be overridden in data packs to change what the Breeze drops, add new drops, or modify Looting scaling.
  • Spawn Control: Since Breezes spawn only from trial spawners, they are not affected by /gamerule doMobSpawning. Trial spawners operate on their own system.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Difficulty Scaling: Unlike most hostile mobs, the Breeze does not deal significantly more damage on higher difficulties. The wind charge direct hit is approximately 1 damage across all difficulty levels. The real scaling comes from the environment — on Hard difficulty, other trial chamber mobs are tougher, and the combined pressure of dodging wind charges while fighting zombies and skeletons makes everything more dangerous.
  • Java vs. Bedrock (Spawning): Spawning mechanics are functionally identical. Both editions use trial spawners with chiseled tuff surrounds for Breeze spawners.
  • Java vs. Bedrock (Entity ID): The entity ID is minecraft:breeze on both editions. However, the wind charge projectile entity ID differs — Java uses minecraft:breeze_wind_charge while Bedrock uses minecraft:breeze_wind_charge_projectile.
  • Java vs. Bedrock (Leaping): Some players have reported that the Breeze leaps less frequently on Bedrock Edition compared to Java, though this may be related to room geometry and pathfinding differences rather than an intentional change.
  • Peaceful Mode: The Breeze does not spawn on Peaceful difficulty. Trial spawners will not activate.

Sounds & Audio

  • Ambient Sound: entity.breeze.idle_ground / entity.breeze.idle_air — a subtle, constant whooshing sound. You will hear it before you see the Breeze in many trial chamber rooms.
  • Jump Sound: entity.breeze.jump — a compressed rush of air as it launches.
  • Land Sound: entity.breeze.land — a thud followed by a burst of wind particles.
  • Shoot Sound: entity.breeze.shoot — the firing sound for the wind charge projectile.
  • Wind Charge Impact: entity.breeze.wind_burst — the explosion-like burst when a wind charge hits something.
  • Hurt Sound: entity.breeze.hurt — a strained whoosh when it takes damage.
  • Death Sound: entity.breeze.death — the wind dies. Literally.
  • Slide Sound: entity.breeze.slide — plays when the Breeze moves on the ground between jumps.
  • Inhale Sound: entity.breeze.inhale — plays as the Breeze charges up before firing a wind charge.
  • Deflect Sound: entity.breeze.deflect — plays when a projectile is repelled by the Breeze.

History & Major Changes

  • 23w51a (December 2023): The Breeze was first added to Java Edition snapshots as an experimental feature behind the 1.21 experiment toggle.
  • 24w03a (January 2024): The Breeze became available in standard snapshots without requiring experimental toggles. Initial behavior and attack patterns were established.
  • 24w09a–24w13a (February–March 2024): Multiple iterations refined the Breeze’s leaping distance, wind charge knockback radius, and interaction with redstone components. Deflection mechanics for wind charges were polished.
  • 1.21 Pre-releases (May 2024): Final balance tweaks including drop quantities, trial spawner behavior, and interaction with other trial chamber mobs.
  • Java Edition 1.21 (June 2024): Full release of the Breeze as part of the Tricky Trials update alongside trial chambers, wind charges, the Mace, and the heavy core.
  • Bedrock Edition 1.21.0 (June 2024): Full Bedrock release with matching functionality.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Invisibility Loophole: When an invisibility effect is applied to the Breeze, the head and rods become invisible as expected, but the wind particle effects and glowing eyebrow texture remain fully visible. This means you can still see it. The Breeze is bad at hiding.
  • Boat Behavior: Placing a Breeze in a boat disables its jumping and attacking, but it can still rotate freely. This is unusual because most mobs in boats cannot rotate. Whether this is intentional or a bug is unclear.
  • Lava Jump Limitation: When standing in lava, the Breeze can only jump 1 block vertically instead of its usual 5. This can be exploited to trap Breezes in lava pits, though they will take fire damage and die without dropping loot (since it does not count as a player kill).
  • Close-Range AI Freeze: At 1-2 blocks distance, the Breeze completely stops attacking. Occasionally, its AI can get stuck in a loop where it tries to leap away, fails because of a wall, and just sits there doing nothing. Corner it and it becomes the easiest hostile mob in the game.

Advancements / Achievements

  • Monster Hunter (Java): Kill any hostile mob — the Breeze counts toward this advancement.
  • Monsters Hunted (Java): Kill one of every hostile mob — the Breeze is included in the required list for this advancement since 1.21.
  • Adventure (Java): Kill any entity or be killed — interacting with the Breeze counts.
  • Crafting a New Look (Java): Applies a flow armor trim using breeze rods, unlocking this advancement.
  • Bedrock Achievements: The Breeze counts toward the “Monster Hunter” and “Monsters Hunted” achievement equivalents on Bedrock Edition.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Blaze Parallel: The Breeze is widely considered the elemental counterpart to the Blaze — fire versus wind. The Blaze lives in the Nether, the Breeze lives underground in the Overworld. Both drop themed rods. Both float. Both are annoying. The community has speculated about potential water and earth elemental mobs to complete a classical four-element set, though Mojang has not confirmed this.
  • Minecraft Live 2023 Reveal: Mojang developer Cory “Cojomax99” Scheviak described the Breeze as a “playful hostile mob” during the Minecraft Live 2023 presentation. “Playful” is a generous word for something that yeets you into a pit.
  • Name Origin: The name “Breeze” follows the pattern of understating the mob’s actual threat level. A breeze is a gentle wind. This thing creates localized tornadoes that activate trap rooms. Marketing at its finest.
  • First New Weapon in Five Years: The Mace, which requires breeze rods to craft, was the first new weapon type added to Minecraft since the crossbow in 1.14 (2019). The Breeze is directly responsible for one of the biggest combat additions in years.
  • Community Nickname: Some players refer to the Breeze as the “air Blaze” or “wind Blaze,” which is about as creative as the Breeze is merciful — not very.
