Creaking

The Creaking is a hostile mob added in the Garden Awakens update that plays by rules no other mob in Minecraft follows. It spawns exclusively in the Pale Garden biome from an activated Creaking Heart block, and its entire gimmick revolves around a mechanic straight out of a horror movie — it only moves when you are not looking at it. Stare at it and it freezes in place. Look away and it closes the gap, ready to smack you in the back of the head.

Think of it as Minecraft’s answer to the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who, except made of pale wood and with three glowing orange eyes that watch you through the fog of an already unsettling biome. The Creaking cannot be damaged through conventional means. You can swing a Netherite sword at it all day and accomplish nothing — the only way to actually kill it is to destroy the Creaking Heart block hidden inside a nearby pale oak tree. This makes the Creaking less of a traditional fight and more of a tense game of keep-your-eyes-on-the-horror-tree while frantically chopping through logs to find its weak point.

It is also the key to farming resin, one of the newer crafting materials in the game. Every time you hit a heart-linked Creaking, resin clumps appear on the pale oak logs near its Creaking Heart. So the mob that cannot be killed is also the mob you need to keep alive if you want a steady supply of building materials. Minecraft has a sense of humor like that.

Overview / Quick Stats

Attribute Details
Name Creaking
Namespaced Entity ID minecraft:creaking (spawned via egg/command)
minecraft:creaking_transient (spawned by Creaking Heart)
Alignment Hostile
Dimensions / Hitbox Height: 2.5 blocks, Width: 1.0 block
Health 1 heart (2 HP) — however, heart-linked Creakings are completely immune to all damage. Only Creakings spawned via spawn egg or /summon can be damaged.
Armor 0
Base Damage Melee attack (unarmed):
  • Easy: 2 damage (1 heart)
  • Normal: 3 damage (1.5 hearts)
  • Hard: 3 damage (1.5 hearts)

Damage is consistent across Normal and Hard difficulty.

Movement Speed Slow — cannot outrun a sprinting player. Moves only when unobserved.
Knockback Resistance 1.0 (100%) when frozen by player line of sight. Heart-linked Creakings are also fully immune to knockback from all sources.
Follow / Detection Range Activates when a player looks at it within 12 blocks. Remains active within 32 blocks of its Creaking Heart.
Experience Drop 0 XP from the Creaking mob itself. Destroying a naturally-generated Creaking Heart drops 20–24 XP.
Spawn Location Pale Garden biome, near an activated Creaking Heart block
First Added Java Edition 1.21.4 / Bedrock Edition 1.21.50 (The Garden Awakens)
Last Major Change Java Edition 1.21.5 — named Creakings no longer despawn during the daytime

Appearance

The Creaking looks like a pale oak tree decided to get up and start walking around. Its body is made of the same ashen, desaturated wood textures found throughout the Pale Garden, which means it blends into its environment disturbingly well — especially at night when the biome is already draped in fog and bad vibes.

It stands 2.5 blocks tall with a thin, angular frame and an asymmetrical body shape. The Creaking is actually the first asymmetrical mob ever added to the game, which makes it look naturally uneven and organic, like an actual gnarled tree trunk. Its most recognizable feature is the set of three horizontal glowing orange eyes arranged in a row on its face. Those eyes are bright enough to spot through the dark, which is both helpful and deeply unsettling.

When idle, the Creaking’s eyes glow dimly. Once it activates and starts paying attention to you, those eyes light up considerably brighter. The texture design allows it to camouflage with surrounding pale oak trees, similar to how a Creeper blends into grass. You might walk past one without even noticing it — until it moves.

Behavior & AI

  • Targeting / Aggro: The Creaking becomes alerted when a player in Survival or Adventure mode looks at it while within 12 blocks. It returns to its idle state when no player is nearby, or if the player switches to Creative or Spectator mode.
  • Freeze Mechanic: When a player is directly looking at the Creaking, it cannot move or attack. It locks in place with full knockback resistance. This only works in Survival and Adventure mode — the Creaking does not care about Creative or Spectator players.
  • Carved Pumpkin Exception: If a player is wearing a carved pumpkin as a helmet, looking at the Creaking does NOT freeze it. The Creaking treats pumpkin-wearing players as if they are not looking at all. So no, you cannot cheese this mechanic with headwear.
  • Movement: When no player is looking at it, the Creaking moves toward the nearest player and attacks. It is not fast — a sprinting player can outrun it — but in the dense, foggy Pale Garden, turning your back on it for even a second lets it close ground.
  • Leash Range: A Creaking will not move beyond 32 blocks from its Creaking Heart. If pushed or knocked beyond that radius by any means, it disintegrates and despawns instantly.
  • Idle Behavior: When not activated, a heart-linked Creaking wanders aimlessly through the Pale Garden with dimly lit eyes, not posing any threat until you get close enough.
  • Daylight: Heart-linked Creakings despawn when daytime arrives. They only exist at night or during thunderstorms. Creakings spawned via spawn egg or /summon persist through both day and night.
  • Named Creakings: As of Java 1.21.5, named Creakings (via name tag) do not despawn during the daytime.
  • Despawn: Heart-linked Creakings despawn at dawn. Egg/command-spawned Creakings follow normal hostile mob despawn rules.
  • Water/Lava: The Creaking is immune to fire and lava damage. It can walk on magma blocks and swim through lava without taking any damage. It can also walk on powdered snow without sinking or taking freeze damage.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Melee Attack: The Creaking deals 3 damage (1.5 hearts) on Normal and Hard difficulty, and 2 damage (1 heart) on Easy. It attacks with an unarmed melee strike when the player is not looking at it. This is notably low damage for a mob with such dramatic presentation — less than a zombie on Hard difficulty.
  • Complete Damage Immunity (Heart-Linked): A Creaking spawned from a Creaking Heart cannot take any form of damage. Swords, axes, arrows, TNT, lava, fire, Iron Golems, Wardens, Zoglins, Withers — none of it works. The only way to kill it is to destroy its Creaking Heart.
  • Damage Vulnerability (Egg/Command-Spawned): Creakings spawned from a spawn egg or the /summon command are NOT linked to any heart. These can take damage normally and have only 1 heart (2 HP), making them die to a single punch.
  • Particle Trail: When a player or their tamed pet hits a heart-linked Creaking, a trail of orange particles appears between the Creaking and its Creaking Heart. This is the game’s way of telling you where the heart is hidden. Additionally, 2–3 resin clumps will appear on pale oak logs near the heart.
  • Sway Animation: When hit, the Creaking sways back and forth instead of taking knockback. This is a visual response only — no actual damage is dealt to it.
  • Knockback Immunity: Heart-linked Creakings are completely immune to knockback at all times, not just when frozen by player vision.
  • Status Effect Resistance: Creakings cannot be affected by the Wind Charged, Infested, Oozing, or Weaving status effects.
  • Suffocation Immunity: Unlike nearly every other mob in the game, the Creaking cannot be suffocated. You cannot trap it in blocks and wait for it to die.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Within 32 blocks of an activated Creaking Heart
Biomes Pale Garden (exclusively — the Creaking Heart block only naturally generates here)
Y-Level Range Any Y-level where a Pale Garden generates with valid pale oak trees containing Creaking Hearts
Light Level Not affected by light level. Spawning is based on the day/night cycle, not ambient light. Torches will not prevent spawning.
Required Block A Creaking Heart placed between two pale oak logs (stripped or unstripped, same axis orientation). The heart must be “activated” — this means it is sandwiched between two pale oak logs along the same axis.
Group Size 1 Creaking per activated Creaking Heart
Weight Not part of the standard mob spawning pool. Spawns are entirely dictated by Creaking Hearts.
Edition Differences Core spawning mechanics are the same across Java and Bedrock. In Java 1.21.5, named Creakings persist through daytime.

An important detail: not all naturally generated pale oak trees in the Pale Garden contain a Creaking Heart. Only some trees have one hidden inside. You cannot grow a pale oak tree with bone meal and expect it to contain a Creaking Heart — only naturally generated trees have this chance. The number of Creakings in a Pale Garden at night is directly equal to the number of activated Creaking Hearts present.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Illagers: All Illagers are afraid of the Creaking and will actively run away from it. Yes, even the Vindicator. The “Johnny” variant (who normally attacks almost everything) is also scared of the Creaking but still considers it a valid target, leading to the bizarre behavior of running up to it and then immediately fleeing. It is one of the funniest AI interactions in the game.
  • Iron Golems: Iron Golems attempt to attack the Creaking, but their attacks deal no damage to heart-linked Creakings. The Golem just swings at an invincible tree forever. A tragic display of wasted effort.
  • Wardens: Wardens cannot damage heart-linked Creakings despite being the strongest mob in the game. The Creaking’s damage immunity overrides everything.
  • Zoglins and Withers: Also cannot damage heart-linked Creakings. The damage immunity is absolute.
  • Boats: Creakings will not enter boats.
  • Tamed Pets: When a player’s tamed pet (such as a wolf) hits the Creaking, it triggers the same particle trail and resin clump generation as a player hit.
  • Creaking Heart Connection: If the Creaking Heart that spawned a Creaking is destroyed, the Creaking plays a twitching death animation and disintegrates immediately. There is no fight — the heart dies, the Creaking dies.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Nothing (from mob) 0 100% The Creaking itself drops absolutely nothing — no items, no experience orbs. It is one of the few mobs in the entire game with a completely empty loot table.
Resin Clump (from heart) 1–3 100% Dropped when destroying a Creaking Heart without Silk Touch. Fortune increases the maximum by 1 per level, up to 6 with Fortune III.
Creaking Heart (from heart) 1 100% Only drops when broken with a Silk Touch enchanted tool. This allows you to relocate the heart and set up Creaking spawns wherever you want.
Resin Clump (from hitting Creaking) 2–3 100% Generated on pale oak logs near the Creaking Heart every time a player or tamed pet hits a heart-linked Creaking. This is the primary method for farming resin.
Experience (from heart) 20–24 XP 100% Dropped when a naturally-generated Creaking Heart is destroyed in Survival mode. Player-placed hearts do not drop XP.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Resin Farming: The Creaking’s primary utility is as an infinite resin generator. Place a Creaking Heart between two pale oak logs, wait for nightfall, and then hit the spawned Creaking repeatedly. Each hit produces 2–3 resin clumps on the nearby pale oak logs. You can do this indefinitely without killing the Creaking — just keep hitting it and collecting the resin that appears. One hit every few seconds is all you need.
  • Farm Setup: For a simple resin farm, place a Creaking Heart between two pale oak logs in a confined area where you can keep the Creaking in your line of sight. Build walls around it so it cannot wander far. Hit the Creaking, collect the resin from nearby logs, and repeat. You do not need to kill it.
  • Resin Uses: Resin clumps can be crafted into resin blocks, resin bricks, resin brick slabs, resin brick walls, resin brick stairs, and other decorative blocks. These are popular building materials with a warm, amber-toned look.
  • Creaking Heart Crafting: A Creaking Heart can be crafted from 9 resin clumps and 2 pale oak logs, meaning you can create new hearts and set up farms anywhere with the right materials.
  • Guard Mob / Prank: Because the Creaking attacks any player who is not looking at it, placing a Creaking Heart setup inside a friend’s base on a multiplayer server is one of the more terrifying pranks available. The Creaking will spawn at night, camouflage with the pale wood, and attack anyone who turns their back on it.
  • Edition Caveats: The core farming mechanics work identically in Java and Bedrock. Make sure the Creaking Heart is activated (between two correctly oriented pale oak logs) or nothing will spawn.

Commands & NBT

The Creaking has two separate entity IDs depending on how it was created. Naturally spawned (heart-linked) Creakings use creaking_transient, while egg or command-spawned Creakings use creaking. This distinction matters for commands and datapacks.

/summon minecraft:creaking ~ ~ ~

This summons a Creaking that is NOT linked to any Creaking Heart. It will have 1 heart of health, can take damage, and persists through daytime. It does not generate resin when hit.

/summon minecraft:creaking ~ ~ ~ {NoAI:1b}

Summons a stationary Creaking — useful for decoration or map-making.

/summon minecraft:creaking ~ ~ ~ {CustomName:'{"text":"Harold"}',CustomNameVisible:1b}

Summons a named Creaking. As of Java 1.21.5, named Creakings do not despawn during the daytime.

  • home_pos — NBT key used by the creaking_transient entity to store the position of its linked Creaking Heart block.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Tags: The Creaking is included in the standard hostile mob entity tags. The creaking_transient entity type is used for naturally spawned (heart-linked) Creakings, and creaking for egg/command-spawned ones.
  • Loot Table Path: minecraft:entities/creaking_transient — this is the loot table for heart-linked Creakings. It is empty by default but can be modified via datapacks.
  • Creaking Heart Activation: The Creaking Heart block responds to the dimension’s environment attributes. The creaking_heart_active environment attribute controls whether hearts become active, which is tied to the day/night cycle by default.
  • Advancement Trigger: Destroying a Creaking Heart uses the minecraft:player_killed_entity trigger on the creaking_transient entity for advancement tracking.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Easy: The Creaking deals 2 damage (1 heart) per hit.
  • Normal: The Creaking deals 3 damage (1.5 hearts) per hit.
  • Hard: The Creaking deals 3 damage (1.5 hearts) per hit. The damage does not increase from Normal to Hard, which makes it one of the least threatening hostile mobs in terms of raw damage output. A zombie hits harder on Hard difficulty.
  • Peaceful: Creakings do not spawn on Peaceful difficulty.
  • Java vs. Bedrock (Entity ID): Java uses minecraft:creaking and minecraft:creaking_transient. Bedrock uses creaking as the entity value.
  • Java 1.21.5 Change: Named Creakings no longer despawn during the daytime in Java Edition. This behavior may not yet be present in Bedrock.
  • Core Mechanic Parity: The freeze-when-observed mechanic, Creaking Heart link, resin generation, and damage immunity all function identically across both editions.

Sounds & Audio

The Creaking has a distinctive set of eerie, woody sound effects that fit perfectly into the unsettling atmosphere of the Pale Garden. You will often hear a Creaking before you see it.

  • Java Edition:
    • entity.creaking.ambient — idle wooden creaking sounds
    • entity.creaking.activate — when the Creaking notices a player
    • entity.creaking.deactivate — when the Creaking returns to idle
    • entity.creaking.attack — melee strike
    • entity.creaking.death — destruction/twitching animation
    • entity.creaking.freeze — when frozen by player line of sight
    • entity.creaking.unfreeze — when the player looks away
    • entity.creaking.spawn — initial spawn from heart
    • entity.creaking.step — footstep sounds
    • entity.creaking.sway — sway animation when hit
    • entity.creaking.twitch — death twitch when heart is destroyed
  • Bedrock Edition:
    • mob.creaking.ambient
    • mob.creaking.activate
    • mob.creaking.deactivate
    • mob.creaking.attack
    • mob.creaking.death
    • mob.creaking.freeze
    • mob.creaking.unfreeze
    • mob.creaking.spawn
    • mob.creaking.step
    • mob.creaking.sway
    • mob.creaking.twitch

History & Major Changes

  • Java Edition 1.21.4 / Bedrock Edition 1.21.50: The Creaking was added to the game as part of “The Garden Awakens” game drop, alongside the Pale Garden biome, Creaking Heart block, pale oak wood set, eyeblossoms, and resin.
  • Java Edition 1.21.5: Named Creakings no longer despawn during the daytime. This change allows players to use name tags to keep a Creaking around permanently.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • The Creaking was initially affected by knockback from wind charges and Punch-enchanted bows, which contradicted its intended knockback immunity. These were fixed in subsequent patches.
  • Pufferfish had no hit delay on Creakings, causing a loud, constant buzzing sound when a pufferfish was near one. This was also patched.
  • Evokers run away from Creakings faster than other Illagers do, suggesting the Evoker has a higher “fear value” for the Creaking than its Illager peers.
  • The Creaking particle trail (showing the connection to its heart) cannot be seen if the player has particle settings set to “Minimal.” If you are wondering why you cannot find the heart, check your particle settings.
  • Despite having low health (1 heart), naturally spawned Creakings cannot be defeated by even the Warden’s attacks due to their complete damage immunity.
  • Creakings could be pushed around by entities and players when standing on soul sand or mud, despite their knockback immunity. This was flagged as a bug.

Advancements / Achievements

  • Monster Hunter (Java): Destroying a Creaking Heart (which kills the linked creaking_transient entity) counts toward the “Monster Hunter” advancement. The Creaking is one of the 37 hostile mobs required for this advancement.
  • Monsters Hunted (Java): The Creaking (via creaking_transient) is also required for the “Monsters Hunted” advancement, which requires killing one of every hostile mob.
  • Note: Destroying a Creaking Heart with player-activated TNT did not originally grant the Monster Hunter advancement. This was reported as a bug (MC-277101).

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • The Creaking’s mechanic of freezing when observed is directly inspired by the Weeping Angels from the television series Doctor Who and SCP-173 from the SCP Foundation. The Minecraft community noticed this immediately.
  • The Creaking is the first asymmetrical mob ever added to Minecraft. Every other mob in the game has a symmetrical model — the Creaking breaks that pattern with its uneven, gnarled shape.
  • A group of Creakings is officially called a “crunch.”
  • The Creaking’s eye pattern mirrors the open eyeblossoms found in the Pale Garden biome, creating a thematic visual connection between the mob and its environment.
  • A LEGO Minecraft Creaking minifigure has been produced as part of Minecraft’s merchandise line.
  • The Creaking’s texture is designed to camouflage with pale oak trees, similar to how the Creeper’s texture was originally designed to blend into grass blocks.
  • Despite being presented as a terrifying new threat, the community quickly noted that the Creaking deals less damage than a zombie on Hard difficulty, leading to widespread feedback requesting a damage buff. As of the latest versions, Mojang has not increased its damage.
