Trader Llama

The trader llama is what happens when a regular llama gets a job. These carpet-wearing, spit-slinging pack animals spawn exclusively alongside the wandering trader, acting as his personal bodyguard detail — two llamas per trader, every time. They look fancier than their wild cousins, they are slightly more aggressive, and they are completely convinced that their spit attack is going to save the day. It usually does not.

What makes trader llamas interesting is the weird limbo they occupy between tamed and wild. They spawn leashed to the wandering trader and will defend him if anything gets hostile, but they are not technically tamed when they first appear. If the wandering trader despawns or dies and the leash breaks, these llamas stick around as regular entities in your world — and that is when things get useful. A trader llama that has lost its trader is basically a free llama with a decorative carpet already equipped.

Whether you want them for their carpet, their storage capacity, or just because you collect every mob like Pokemon, trader llamas are worth understanding. They have some quirks that set them apart from normal llamas, and a few behaviors that will catch you off guard if you are not expecting them.

Appearance

Trader llamas look identical to regular llamas in terms of body shape — tall, blocky, rectangular body with a long neck and that signature flat face that only a mother could love. They come in the same four skin variants as normal llamas: creamy, white, brown, and gray. The game picks one randomly when they spawn.

The dead giveaway that you are looking at a trader llama and not a regular one is the carpet. Every trader llama spawns wearing a unique blue and gold decorated carpet that you cannot obtain through normal crafting. This is the “trader llama” carpet style, and it only appears on these llamas. It features a blue base with gold trim patterns — think of it as the wandering trader’s company uniform.

If you remove the trader carpet and place a different colored carpet on a trader llama, it uses the same carpet textures as a regular llama. The unique blue-and-gold design is exclusive to the default trader llama carpet. Baby trader llamas are smaller versions of the adult, proportionally scaled down to about half size, and they do not spawn naturally — they can only be bred.

Behavior & AI

  • Leash Following: Trader llamas spawn leashed to the wandering trader with invisible leads. They follow the trader as he wanders, forming a small caravan. If the trader moves, they follow. If the trader stops, they stop. It is a simple life.
  • Defensive Spitting: Trader llamas are more aggressive than regular llamas. They actively spit at hostile mobs (zombies, skeletons, illagers, etc.) that come within 16 blocks, even if those mobs are not targeting the llamas themselves. They are defending their trader, not just themselves.
  • Player Retaliation: If a player hits a trader llama, it and any nearby trader llamas will spit at the player. They forgive after a few seconds and go back to their business. One spit does 1 damage (0.5 hearts), so it is more insulting than dangerous.
  • Despawn Behavior: While leashed to a living wandering trader, trader llamas do not despawn. When the wandering trader despawns (after 40–60 minutes) or is killed, the leads drop as items and the llamas become persistent — they will never despawn. They effectively become permanent world entities at that point.
  • Idle Behavior: When not following a trader or retaliating, trader llamas wander aimlessly, occasionally looking around. They avoid cliffs and water the same way regular llamas do.
  • Wandering After Trader Loss: Once their trader is gone, unleashed trader llamas behave almost identically to wild llamas. They roam, they spit at things they do not like, and they stand around looking decorative.
  • Caravan Forming: Trader llamas can form caravans just like regular llamas. If you leash one, up to 9 other nearby llamas (trader or regular) will follow in a line behind the leashed one.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Spit Attack: The trader llama’s only attack. It launches a llama spit projectile at its target, dealing 1 damage (0.5 hearts). The spit has a range of about 10 blocks and travels in an arc, similar to a thrown egg. The spit has a slight cooldown of about 3 seconds between shots.
  • Spit Strength: Trader llamas have a hidden “strength” stat that ranges from 1 to 5, randomly assigned at spawn. This determines their inventory slot count (3 slots per strength point) but does NOT affect spit damage — it is always 1 damage regardless of strength.
  • No Status Effects: Trader llama spit does not inflict any status effects. It is just a glob of projectile disappointment.
  • Knockback: Spit applies a small amount of knockback to the target. Not enough to push a mob off a cliff in most cases, but enough to be annoying.
  • Immunities: Trader llamas are not immune to any damage types. They can burn, drown, fall, and take every other kind of damage just like most mobs.
  • Friendly Fire: If a trader llama’s spit accidentally hits another llama, the hit llama will spit back. This can start a llama spit war, which is exactly as chaotic and pointless as it sounds. They do eventually stop, but not before several llamas have expressed their displeasure.

Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth

  • Taming: Trader llamas can be tamed by repeatedly mounting them until hearts appear, identical to regular llamas. Each mount attempt has a random chance of success based on the llama’s hidden “temper” value, which increases each time you mount. Feed them hay bales or wheat to increase temper faster.
  • Food — Wheat: Restores 2 health (1 heart). Increases temper by 3 when taming. Speeds baby growth by 10 seconds.
  • Food — Hay Bale: Restores 10 health (5 hearts). Increases temper by 6 when taming. Speeds baby growth by 90 seconds. Required to trigger breeding mode (love mode).
  • Breeding: Feed two tamed trader llamas (or one trader llama and one regular llama) a hay bale each to breed them. The baby is always a trader llama if at least one parent is a trader llama. The baby inherits the higher strength stat of its parents, with a chance to gain +1 or -1 strength (capped at 1 minimum, 5 maximum).
  • Baby Growth: Baby trader llamas take 20 minutes (one full Minecraft day) to grow into adults. This can be sped up by feeding them wheat or hay bales.
  • Chest Storage: Once tamed, a chest can be placed on a trader llama by right-clicking with a chest. Inventory size is 3, 6, 9, 12, or 15 slots depending on the llama’s strength stat (1–5). The chest cannot be removed without killing the llama.
  • Carpet / Decor: A tamed trader llama can wear any carpet color. Placing a new carpet replaces the old one (the old carpet drops as an item). The default trader carpet drops when replaced.
  • Riding: You can mount a tamed trader llama, but you cannot control its movement. There is no saddle slot. You just sit there while the llama goes wherever it wants. Think of it less as “riding” and more as “being tolerated.”
  • Leads: Trader llamas can be leashed with a lead. Leashing one llama causes up to 9 other nearby llamas to follow in a caravan behind it.

Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms

Skin Variants

  • Creamy: Light tan/beige body. The most common look and arguably the most “default llama” appearance.
  • White: Solid white body. Slightly less common.
  • Brown: Dark brown body. Looks like it has been out in the sun too long.
  • Gray: Dark gray body. The edgy llama of the group.

All four variants are purely cosmetic. There is no gameplay difference between them — same health range, same spit damage, same everything. The variant is chosen randomly at spawn.

Trader Llama vs. Regular Llama

  • Entity ID: Trader llamas use minecraft:trader_llama instead of minecraft:llama. They are technically a separate entity type.
  • Aggression: Trader llamas are more aggressive than regular llamas. They will spit at hostile mobs proactively to defend their wandering trader, while regular llamas only spit when directly provoked.
  • Despawn Rules: Trader llamas that have lost their trader become persistent and never despawn. Regular wild llamas follow normal despawn rules.
  • Default Carpet: Trader llamas spawn with the unique blue-and-gold trader carpet. Regular llamas spawn without any carpet.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Spawns exclusively with the wandering trader, near players in loaded chunks
Biomes Any biome where the wandering trader can spawn (virtually all Overworld biomes)
Y-Level Range Any Y-level where the wandering trader spawns (surface level, near the player)
Light Level Any light level — spawns with the trader regardless of light conditions
Required Block Needs a solid block to spawn on (same requirement as the wandering trader)
Group Size Always 2 per wandering trader
Weight N/A — spawning is tied directly to the wandering trader spawn cycle, not mob spawn weights
Edition Differences Java: Wandering trader attempts to spawn every 24,000 ticks (20 minutes) with increasing probability. Starts at 25% chance and increases by 25% each failed attempt (caps at 75%).
Bedrock: Similar timer-based spawn cycle, but the exact probabilities and timers can differ slightly in implementation.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Wandering Trader: This is the trader llama’s whole reason for existing. They spawn leashed to the trader and follow him everywhere until the leash breaks or the trader despawns/dies. They will spit at any mob that attacks the trader.
  • Hostile Mobs: Trader llamas proactively target hostile mobs within 16 blocks. Zombies, skeletons, spiders, illagers — if it is hostile and nearby, the trader llama is going to spit at it. The 1 damage is rarely enough to kill anything, but it does aggro the mob away from the trader temporarily.
  • Wolves: Wolves can attack and kill trader llamas. The llamas will spit back, but wolves in a pack will overwhelm a llama quickly. Tamed wolves will not attack trader llamas unless commanded.
  • Other Llamas: Trader llamas can form caravans with regular llamas. They can also breed with regular llamas. If spit accidentally hits another llama, expect a brief spit fight.
  • Iron Golems: Iron golems ignore trader llamas and vice versa. No interaction.
  • Boats & Minecarts: Trader llamas can be pushed into boats and minecarts. A llama in a boat is a valid transportation method, though calling it “practical” would be generous.
  • Water: Trader llamas can swim but avoid water when pathfinding. If they end up in deep water they will swim to shore but are not fast about it.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Leather 0–2 Guaranteed Roll Drops 1 extra per level of Looting (max 0–5 with Looting III).
Lead 1–2 Conditional Each leashed trader llama drops its lead when the trader despawns, the lead is broken, or the trader/llama dies. Two llamas per trader means up to 2 leads per trader encounter.
Carpet (Trader) 1 Conditional Drops the equipped carpet only if one is currently equipped when the llama dies. The default trader carpet cannot be re-obtained through crafting.
Chest Contents All Conditional If a chest was equipped, all stored items drop on death. The chest itself is not recoverable as an item.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Free Leads: The most practical reason to care about trader llamas. Every wandering trader arrives with 2 leashed llamas, which means 2 free leads. Leads are surprisingly annoying to craft (requiring slimeballs), so many players just wait for wandering traders and harvest the leads when the trader despawns or is killed. This is arguably the primary “farm” value of trader llamas.
  • Portable Storage: Once tamed and equipped with a chest, trader llamas carry 3–15 inventory slots depending on their strength stat. Caravan mechanics mean you can leash one llama and have up to 9 more follow behind it, creating a walking storage train. Not as fast as a donkey, but the capacity scales well with numbers.
  • Breeding for Strength: Since babies inherit the higher strength of their parents with a chance to gain +1, you can selectively breed trader llamas (or cross-breed with regular llamas) to maximize strength and get 15-slot pack animals. It takes patience, but strength 5 llamas are the best mobile storage option behind donkeys.
  • Decoration: Trader llamas accept any carpet color, making them surprisingly good for decorating bases and builds. Line them up in a pen with matching carpets and you have a functional and colorful stable.
  • No Dedicated Farm: You cannot build a trader llama farm the way you would a mob farm. Their spawn is entirely dependent on the wandering trader cycle, which is timer-based and limited. The best strategy is to tame any trader llamas you find, breed them, and build your herd over time.

Commands & NBT

Here are common commands for spawning and customizing trader llamas:

/summon minecraft:trader_llama ~ ~ ~ {Variant:0, Strength:5, Tame:1b, Owner:"PlayerName"}

Spawn a tamed trader llama with maximum strength (5) and the creamy skin variant.

/summon minecraft:trader_llama ~ ~ ~ {Variant:2, DecorItem:{id:"minecraft:red_carpet",count:1}}

Spawn a brown trader llama wearing a red carpet.

/summon minecraft:trader_llama ~ ~ ~ {Age:-24000}

Spawn a baby trader llama that will take 20 minutes to grow up.

  • Variant: Integer 0–3. Controls skin color: 0 = creamy, 1 = white, 2 = brown, 3 = gray.
  • Strength: Integer 1–5. Determines inventory capacity (3 slots per point) and affects breeding outcomes.
  • Tame: Byte tag. Set to 1b to spawn already tamed.
  • Owner: UUID or player name string. Assigns ownership of the tamed llama.
  • DecorItem: Compound tag containing the carpet item data. Controls which carpet the llama wears.
  • ChestedHorse: Byte tag. Set to 1b to spawn with a chest equipped.
  • Items: List tag. Contents of the chest inventory.
  • DespawnDelay: Integer. Controls despawn timer for trader llamas still attached to a living wandering trader. Set to 0 for immediate despawn eligibility.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Type Tag: #minecraft:llama — Trader llamas are included in this tag alongside regular llamas, which affects certain interactions and AI behaviors.
  • Loot Table: minecraft:entities/trader_llama — Can be overridden with datapacks to customize drops.
  • Gamerule — mobGriefing: Does not directly affect trader llamas, as they do not modify blocks.
  • Gamerule — doMobSpawning: Setting this to false prevents wandering traders (and therefore trader llamas) from spawning naturally.
  • Gamerule — doTrading (Bedrock): Affects the wandering trader’s trading ability but does not prevent trader llama spawning.
  • Spawn Event (Bedrock): minecraft:from_wandering_trader — The spawn event triggered when trader llamas are created alongside a wandering trader.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Spit Damage Across Difficulties: Trader llama spit always deals 1 damage (0.5 hearts) regardless of difficulty. Easy, Normal, Hard — does not matter. The llama is equally unimpressive on all settings.
  • Java — Separate Entity: In Java Edition, trader_llama is a distinct entity type from llama. This means they have separate loot tables, spawn rules, and can be targeted independently in commands and datapacks.
  • Bedrock — Entity Variant: In Bedrock Edition, trader llamas are a variant of the base llama entity using component groups and spawn events rather than being a fully separate entity. The functional result is similar but the under-the-hood implementation differs for addon creators.
  • Leash Drop Behavior: When the wandering trader despawns in Java, leads drop as items at the llama’s location. In Bedrock, the behavior is the same but the timing can occasionally differ due to despawn tick differences.
  • Persistence After Trader Loss: In both editions, trader llamas become persistent after their trader leaves. In Java, they also receive a DespawnDelay tag that counts down before they become fully persistent. In Bedrock, persistence is applied immediately when the leash connection is broken.

Sounds & Audio

  • Ambient: entity.llama.ambient — The casual humming/bleating sound. Plays randomly while idle.
  • Hurt: entity.llama.hurt — A distressed bleat when taking damage.
  • Death: entity.llama.death — The final bleat. Slightly more dramatic than the hurt sound.
  • Angry: entity.llama.angry — Plays when the llama is aggravated or about to spit.
  • Spit: entity.llama.spit — The wet, coughing projectile sound. Iconic.
  • Chest: entity.llama.chest — Plays when a chest is placed on the llama.
  • Eat: entity.llama.eat — Plays when the llama consumes wheat or hay bales.
  • Swag: entity.llama.swag — Plays when a carpet is equipped. Yes, the sound event is actually called “swag.” No, that is not a joke.

History & Major Changes

  • Java 1.14 (2019): Trader llamas added alongside the wandering trader as part of the Village & Pillage update. They spawn as a pair leashed to every wandering trader.
  • Bedrock 1.10.0 (2019): Trader llamas added to Bedrock Edition with the same wandering trader mechanics.
  • Java 1.16: Minor pathfinding improvements for all llama types, including trader llamas.
  • Java 1.17: Adjusted despawn behavior to ensure trader llamas persist correctly after their trader despawns.
  • Java 1.20: Updated spawn mechanics and refined leash interaction behavior when the wandering trader despawns.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Spit Wars: If a trader llama accidentally spits on another llama, both llamas start spitting at each other in an endless cycle of mutual annoyance. This can escalate if multiple llamas are nearby. It is hilarious and completely useless.
  • Trader Despawn Orphans: When a wandering trader despawns, the two trader llamas are left behind permanently. Over time, a long-running world can accumulate dozens of these orphaned trader llamas wandering around near your base. Some players consider this a bug. Others consider it a free llama army.
  • Lead Duplication Edge Case: In rare cases, if a wandering trader is killed at the exact moment a lead would break naturally, the lead can drop twice — once from the kill event and once from the natural break. This is inconsistent and version-dependent.
  • Carpet Persistence: If you replace a trader llama’s default carpet with a regular carpet and then the llama dies and is re-summoned via commands, it spawns with the default trader carpet again. The trader carpet is tied to the entity type, not to the specific instance.

Advancements / Achievements

  • The Parrots and the Bats (Java): Breeding two trader llamas (or a trader llama with a regular llama) counts toward the “breed a pair of animals” advancement. The baby must be produced for the advancement to trigger.
  • Two by Two (Java): Breeding trader llamas counts toward this advancement, which requires breeding all breedable animal types.
  • Best Friends Forever (Bedrock): Leashing a trader llama with a lead counts toward this achievement.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Sound Event Name: The carpet equip sound is literally named entity.llama.swag in the game files. This is one of the few genuinely funny things hidden in Minecraft’s code, and it has been there since llamas were added.
  • Free Lead Farm: The trader llama’s most celebrated contribution to the Minecraft community is as a source of free leads. Entire Reddit threads and YouTube videos are dedicated to the simple act of waiting for a wandering trader, killing him, and picking up the 2 leads from his llamas. The llama is secondary to the lead. It knows it. We all know it.
  • Llama Accumulation: On servers that run for months or years, trader llamas often become the most common passive mob in the area around spawn because they never despawn after their trader leaves. Some server admins consider them a mild performance concern.
  • Intentional Separate Entity: Mojang chose to make trader llamas a distinct entity type rather than just a regular llama with a carpet. This means they could give them different AI (more aggressive defensive spitting) without affecting wild llama behavior.
  • Minecraft Dungeons: Llamas appear in Minecraft Dungeons as both enemies and allies, though the “trader llama” distinction does not carry over into that game.
