Panda

The panda is one of those mobs that exists purely to make you go “aww” right before it rolls off a cliff and dies. Found exclusively in jungle biomes — and more commonly in bamboo jungles — the panda is a rare neutral mob with more personality than most players expect. It eats bamboo, it eats cake, it sneezes, it lies on its back, and depending on its genetic personality, it might even attack you if you look at it wrong.

What makes pandas genuinely interesting is their genetics system. Every panda spawns with a main gene and a hidden gene, and the combination of those genes determines its personality. There are seven distinct personality types — normal, aggressive, lazy, worried, playful, weak, and brown — each with unique behaviors, appearances, and quirks. The brown variant is so rare that naturally finding one feels like winning a very adorable lottery.

Pandas were added in the Village and Pillage update and remain one of the most behaviorally complex passive-ish mobs in the game. They cannot be tamed, they have special breeding requirements that will trip up anyone used to just tossing wheat at animals, and their babies have a tiny chance of sneezing out a slimeball. Because of course they do.

Appearance

Pandas are chunky, blocky, and immediately recognizable. The default panda model is wider than most passive mobs — roughly the footprint of a cow but lower to the ground. Their standard look is white with black patches around the eyes, ears, arms, and legs, matching the real-world giant panda coloring.

Each personality type has a unique facial expression that makes identification possible at a glance. Normal pandas have a neutral face. Aggressive pandas have distinct angry eyebrows. Lazy pandas wear a permanent smile. Worried pandas have wide, pleading eyes. Playful pandas stick their tongues out. Weak pandas look perpetually miserable with teary eyes and a runny nose. Brown pandas are the visual standout — entirely brown and white instead of the standard black and white — and they wear a subtle frown.

Baby pandas are scaled-down versions of the adults with the same personality-based facial features. They have noticeably larger heads relative to their body, following the standard Minecraft baby mob proportions. Pandas have sitting, eating, rolling, lying down, and sneezing animations depending on their personality and current behavior.

Behavior & AI

  • General Temperament: Most panda personalities are functionally passive. They wander aimlessly, sit down to eat, and generally mind their own business. However, pandas are technically classified as neutral because they will retaliate once when struck — similar to llamas and bees. Aggressive pandas are the exception and will attack continuously until the target dies or leaves detection range.
  • Following: Pandas follow any player holding bamboo within approximately 16 blocks. If the player moves beyond that range, the panda stops following and goes back to doing panda things.
  • Eating: Adult pandas actively seek out bamboo and cake items on the ground. When they find one, they pick it up, sit down, and eat it with a dedicated animation. Worried pandas do not eat bamboo or cake on their own.
  • Sneezing: Baby pandas have a 1/6,000 chance (0.01666%) every game tick of sneezing. Weak baby pandas sneeze far more frequently at a 1/500 chance (0.2%) per tick. When a baby panda sneezes, all adult pandas within 10 blocks will briefly jump in reaction. Sneezing has a rare chance to drop a slimeball.
  • Rolling: Playful pandas roll around as part of their idle behavior. This looks adorable and is also potentially lethal — they can roll themselves right off a cliff edge and take fatal fall damage.
  • Lying Down: Lazy pandas frequently lie on their backs. In Java Edition, a lazy panda lying on its back will not follow a player holding bamboo. In Bedrock Edition, the lazy panda will get up and follow.
  • Thunderstorm Behavior: Worried pandas react to thunderstorms by shaking and hiding their faces. All pandas whimper during thunderstorms regardless of personality.
  • Water Movement: Pandas move faster in water than most other land mobs, similar to polar bears.
  • Despawning: Pandas are persistent mobs and do not despawn naturally.
  • Peaceful Difficulty: Pandas do not attack on Peaceful difficulty, even the aggressive variant.
  • Leads: A lead cannot be attached to a panda through normal gameplay. However, a panda can be leashed via NBT editors or by leashing the boat it is riding in.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Melee Attack: When a non-aggressive panda is hit, it retaliates with a single melee strike and then stops. This is a one-and-done reaction — it will not chase you or keep fighting. Aggressive pandas, on the other hand, will pursue and attack continuously until the target is dead or out of range.
  • Attack Damage: Pandas deal 2 damage (1 heart) on Easy and Normal, and 3 damage (1.5 hearts) on Hard. Nothing devastating, but enough to be annoying if you accidentally punch one next to its aggressive friends.
  • Group Aggro (Aggressive Only): When a panda is attacked near aggressive pandas (and is not killed in one hit in Java Edition), nearby aggressive pandas will become hostile toward the attacker. Think of it as their neighborhood watch program.
  • Sneeze Slimeball Drop: Baby panda sneezes have a 1/700 chance to produce a slimeball when they sneeze. This is not a reliable farming method — it is more of a fun surprise.
  • No Status Effects: Pandas do not inflict any status effects on players or other mobs.
  • No Immunities: Pandas have no special damage immunities. They take full damage from all sources including fire, lava, fall damage, and drowning.

Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth

  • Food: Pandas eat bamboo and cake. These are the only two items they will pick up from the ground and consume. Bamboo is also the item used for breeding.
  • Taming: Pandas cannot be tamed. Period. You cannot put them on a leash through normal gameplay, you cannot ride them, and they will not defend you. You can make them follow you by holding bamboo, but that is the extent of your influence over them.
  • Breeding Requirements: This is where pandas get particular. Feeding two pandas bamboo will cause them to enter love mode, but only if there is enough bamboo nearby. In Java Edition, there must be at least one bamboo block (not bamboo shoots) within a 5-block radius. In Bedrock Edition, there must be at least 8 bamboo blocks within a 5-block radius of each panda. If the bamboo requirement is not met, the pandas will shake their heads and refuse to breed. In Bedrock Edition, if you feed a panda bamboo without enough bamboo blocks nearby, it simply sits and eats the bamboo instead of entering love mode. In Java Edition, failing to meet the requirements can cause nearby pandas to become hostile toward you.
  • Offspring Genetics: Baby pandas inherit genes from their parents through a genetics system. Each parent has a main gene and a hidden gene. There is a 1/32 chance of mutation when breeding, which can produce a completely random gene. The resulting baby’s personality is determined by the combination of its inherited main gene and hidden gene, with dominant genes overriding recessive ones.
  • Growth: Baby pandas grow into adults after 20 minutes (one full Minecraft day cycle). Growth can be accelerated by feeding bamboo — each bamboo fed reduces remaining growth time by 10%.
  • Baby Behavior: Baby pandas occasionally roll over and jump around. They sneeze at random intervals, and nearby adult pandas react to the sneeze by jumping. Baby pandas from breeding are passive toward the player who bred them, even if the parent was aggressive.

Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms

Normal Panda

  • Gene Type: Dominant
  • Visual: Standard black and white coloring with a neutral facial expression.
  • Behavior: No unique personality quirks. Wanders, eats bamboo and cake, and retaliates once when attacked. The default panda experience.
  • Rarity: Most common personality type.

Aggressive Panda

  • Gene Type: Dominant
  • Visual: Black and white with thick, angry eyebrows and a frowning expression.
  • Behavior: The only panda personality that is truly neutral. Attacks continuously when provoked rather than just striking once. Does not panic when harmed. Will also become hostile when nearby pandas are attacked (unless the attacked panda dies in one hit in Java Edition).
  • Rarity: Uncommon.

Lazy Panda

  • Gene Type: Dominant
  • Visual: Black and white with a permanent smile.
  • Behavior: Frequently lies on its back. Moves at half the normal speed (0.07), making it the slowest natural land mob in the game. In Java Edition, does not follow players holding bamboo while lying on its back. In Bedrock Edition, gets up to follow.
  • Rarity: Uncommon.

Worried Panda

  • Gene Type: Dominant
  • Visual: Black and white with wide, pleading eyes reminiscent of a puppy-dog expression.
  • Behavior: Avoids players and most hostile mobs (except slimes, magma cubes, ghasts, shulkers, phantoms, and the ender dragon). Shakes and hides its face during thunderstorms. Does not eat bamboo or cake items on its own — you have to hand-feed it for breeding.
  • Rarity: Uncommon.

Playful Panda

  • Gene Type: Dominant
  • Visual: Black and white with its tongue sticking out.
  • Behavior: Rolls around and jumps even as an adult. The rolling can — and regularly does — send it tumbling off ledges to its death. Nature gave it joy but not self-preservation instincts.
  • Rarity: Uncommon.

Weak Panda

  • Gene Type: Recessive
  • Visual: Black and white with teary eyes and a snotty, runny nose.
  • Behavior: Has only 10 health (5 hearts) instead of the standard 20. Baby weak pandas sneeze significantly more often (1/500 chance per tick vs 1/6,000 for normal babies), making them the best source of sneeze-dropped slimeballs — not that this is a practical farming method.
  • Rarity: Rare (recessive gene required).

Brown Panda

  • Gene Type: Recessive
  • Visual: Brown and white instead of the standard black and white, with a frowning expression.
  • Behavior: No unique personality behaviors. The brown panda is purely a visual variant. Its rarity is what makes it special — it requires the recessive brown gene to express, making natural spawns exceptionally uncommon.
  • Rarity: The rarest panda variant. Based on the real-world Qinling panda, a subspecies of the giant panda.

Baby Zombie Jockey (Bedrock Edition Only)

  • Platform: Bedrock Edition only.
  • Behavior: Baby zombie variants can ride pandas as jockeys. The rarest mob in Bedrock Edition is a baby husk with full equipment and armor riding a brown panda — which has approximately a 1 in 3.472 trillion chance of spawning naturally. If you ever see one, screenshot it immediately because nobody will believe you.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Surface level, on grass blocks with at least 2 blocks of open space above.
Biomes Jungle and Bamboo Jungle. Significantly more common in Bamboo Jungle biomes.
Y-Level Range Surface level (varies by terrain generation). Must be on a grass block.
Light Level 9 or higher.
Required Block Grass block. Pandas do not spawn on podzol, despite bamboo jungles being heavily covered in it.
Group Size Java: 1–2
Bedrock: 1–2
Weight Rare spawn. 5% of spawns are baby pandas.
Edition Differences No significant spawning differences between Java and Bedrock. Both editions use the same biome, block, and light level requirements.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Villager Reaction (Java Edition): If a player attacks a panda near a villager, that villager displays angry particles. However, this does not actually affect the player’s popularity or trading prices — it is purely cosmetic. The villagers are judging you, but they will not do anything about it.
  • Baby Zombie Jockeys (Bedrock Edition): Baby zombie variants can mount and ride pandas. This includes baby zombies, baby husks, baby drowned, and baby zombie villagers.
  • Worried Panda Mob Avoidance: Worried pandas actively avoid most hostile mobs, including creepers, skeletons, spiders, zombies, and more. However, they do not flee from slimes, magma cubes, ghasts, shulkers, phantoms, or the ender dragon — apparently those threats did not make the worry list.
  • Boats: Pandas can be placed in boats, which is the most practical method of transporting them over long distances since leads do not work. You can also leash the boat itself as a workaround.
  • Minecarts: Pandas can ride in minecarts, though getting them in requires some creative use of rails and positioning.
  • Iron Golems: Iron golems do not defend pandas. If a player attacks a panda, the iron golem will not intervene.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Bamboo 0–2 Guaranteed Roll Dropped on death. Not affected by Looting enchantment.
Slimeball (Baby Sneeze) 1 1/700 per sneeze Only dropped by baby pandas when they sneeze. Weak baby pandas sneeze more often, increasing practical drop rate slightly. Not a death drop — the baby sneezes it out while alive.
Experience (Kill) 1–3 XP Guaranteed Dropped only by adult pandas killed by a player or tamed wolf. Baby pandas drop no items or experience.
Experience (Breeding) 1–7 XP Guaranteed Awarded upon successful breeding.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Slimeball Source (Niche): Baby panda sneezes can drop slimeballs, making pandas a technically renewable source of slime in biomes where slime chunks are unavailable. In practice, the drop rate is so low that this is more of a novelty than a viable farming strategy. If you need slimeballs, find a slime chunk.
  • Bamboo Farming Companion: Since pandas require bamboo jungles and bamboo for breeding, they pair naturally with bamboo farms. The bamboo itself is the more useful resource — fuel, scaffolding, and crafting material.
  • Decorative / Zoo Builds: Pandas are popular additions to player-built zoos, sanctuaries, and decorative builds. Their varied personalities and animations make them more visually interesting than most passive mobs. Collecting all seven personality types is a common completionist goal.
  • Brown Panda Breeding: Players who want a brown panda without relying on the tiny natural spawn chance can breed for one. Both parents need to carry the brown gene (either as main or hidden) for the offspring to have a chance of expressing it. Since brown is recessive, both the main gene and hidden gene of the baby must be brown for the brown appearance to show. This can take many breeding cycles.
  • Transport Considerations: Moving pandas to a base is a project. Boats are the most reliable method — pandas cannot be leashed, and holding bamboo only works within 16 blocks. Plan a water route or build a canal if possible. Nether portals with rail systems are the fastest long-distance option but require significant infrastructure.

Commands & NBT

The panda has unique NBT tags for its genetics system. Both Java and Bedrock support gene manipulation through commands, though the syntax differs.

/summon minecraft:panda ~ ~ ~ {MainGene:"normal",HiddenGene:"normal"}
/summon minecraft:panda ~ ~ ~ {MainGene:"aggressive",HiddenGene:"aggressive"}
/summon minecraft:panda ~ ~ ~ {MainGene:"lazy",HiddenGene:"lazy"}
/summon minecraft:panda ~ ~ ~ {MainGene:"worried",HiddenGene:"worried"}
/summon minecraft:panda ~ ~ ~ {MainGene:"playful",HiddenGene:"playful"}
/summon minecraft:panda ~ ~ ~ {MainGene:"weak",HiddenGene:"weak"}
/summon minecraft:panda ~ ~ ~ {MainGene:"brown",HiddenGene:"brown"}

To check a panda’s hidden gene in Java Edition:

/data get entity @e[type=minecraft:panda,sort=nearest,limit=1] HiddenGene
/data get entity @e[type=minecraft:panda,sort=nearest,limit=1] MainGene

Notable NBT keys:

  • MainGene — The primary gene that determines the panda’s visible personality and behavior. Valid values: "normal", "aggressive", "lazy", "worried", "playful", "weak", "brown".
  • HiddenGene — The secondary gene carried by the panda. Not visible in-game without commands or NBT editors. Passed to offspring during breeding.
  • Age — Negative values indicate a baby. Set to -24000 for a newborn baby that takes 20 minutes to grow up.
  • ForcedAge — The age value that the panda is forced to after being fed bamboo to accelerate growth.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Type Tag: #minecraft:entity_types/panda — not a standard tag, but pandas are included in several broader tags.
  • Mob Category: Pandas fall under the “creature” mob category for spawn cap purposes.
  • Loot Table Path: minecraft:entities/panda — can be overridden via datapacks to change drops.
  • Gamerule — mobGriefing: Does not directly affect pandas since they do not modify blocks. However, it may affect their ability to pick up items in some contexts.
  • Gamerule — doMobSpawning: Controls whether pandas can spawn naturally. Setting to false prevents new panda spawns.
  • Sound Category (Java): Pandas use the “Friendly Creatures” sound category.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Peaceful: Pandas do not attack on Peaceful difficulty, even aggressive variants. They still spawn normally.
  • Easy / Normal / Hard: Attack damage scales slightly on Hard (3 damage vs 2 on Easy/Normal). No other significant difficulty-based changes.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Breeding Requirements: Java Edition requires at least 1 bamboo block within 5 blocks for breeding. Bedrock Edition requires 8 bamboo blocks within 5 blocks. This is the most significant edition difference for pandas.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Lazy Panda Following: In Java Edition, lazy pandas lying on their backs will not follow a player holding bamboo. In Bedrock Edition, they get up and follow normally.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Failed Breeding Reaction: In Java Edition, failing to meet breeding requirements near pandas can cause them to become hostile. In Bedrock Edition, the panda simply sits and eats the bamboo without entering love mode.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Baby Zombie Jockeys: Baby zombie variants can ride pandas only in Bedrock Edition.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Villager Reaction: Villagers display angry particles when a player attacks a panda nearby only in Java Edition.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Leads: Leads cannot be used on pandas in either edition through normal gameplay.

Sounds & Audio

  • entity.panda.ambient — Idle / ambient sound. Plays periodically while the panda is wandering.
  • entity.panda.hurt — Played when the panda takes damage.
  • entity.panda.death — Played on death.
  • entity.panda.step — Footstep sounds while walking.
  • entity.panda.eat — Eating sound when consuming bamboo or cake.
  • entity.panda.sneeze — Played when a baby panda sneezes.
  • entity.panda.aggressive_ambient — Ambient sound specific to aggressive pandas.
  • entity.panda.worried_ambient — Ambient sound specific to worried pandas.
  • entity.panda.cant_breed — Played when breeding requirements are not met.
  • entity.panda.bite — Attack sound.
  • entity.panda.pre_sneeze — Build-up sound before a baby panda sneezes.

Mojang Studios’ lead sound designer Samuel Åberg traveled to Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou, China to record real-life pandas for the in-game audio. This same approach was used for dolphins.

History & Major Changes

  • 18w43a (Java): Pandas announced at MINECON Earth 2018.
  • 19w07a (Java): Pandas added to the game with all seven personality variants, genetics system, and breeding mechanics.
  • 19w08a (Java): Pandas now have an angry face texture when hit. Various AI fixes.
  • 1.14 (Java — Full Release): Pandas officially released as part of the Village and Pillage update.
  • 1.8.0 beta 1.8.0.8 (Bedrock): Pandas added to Bedrock Edition.
  • 1.8.0 (Bedrock — Full Release): Pandas officially released in Bedrock Edition.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Playful Panda Suicide: Playful pandas can and regularly do roll off cliffs and take lethal fall damage. This is technically working as intended — their rolling behavior does not include edge detection. If you want to keep a playful panda alive, fence it in.
  • Podzol Spawn Block: Despite bamboo jungles being heavily covered in podzol, pandas specifically require grass blocks to spawn. This means large sections of their primary biome technically prevent them from spawning, reducing their natural population density.
  • Bedrock Sound Bug (MCPE-153559): Some panda sounds play less frequently than intended in Bedrock Edition because certain sound events (nosebreath and pant) reference sounds that do not exist in the game files.
  • Eating Anything: Pandas can visually “eat” any item they pick up, including items that make no logical sense. Feeding a panda a spyglass, for example, produces missing texture particles because the game tries to show eating particles for an item that has no food texture.

Advancements / Achievements

  • The Parrots and the Bats (Java): Breed two animals. Breeding pandas counts toward this advancement.
  • Two by Two (Java): Breed all breedable animals. Pandas are one of the required mobs for this advancement, meaning you need a bamboo jungle trip (or a lot of bamboo hauling) to complete it.
  • Plethora of Cats (Bedrock): Pandas are not directly involved in this achievement, but exploring jungle biomes for pandas may lead to discovering jungle cats.

Panda Genetics — How the System Actually Works

Every panda has two genes: a main gene and a hidden gene. The main gene determines what the panda looks like and how it behaves — assuming no gene dominance conflicts. The hidden gene is invisible during normal gameplay and can only be checked using commands or NBT editors.

Genes are classified as either dominant or recessive. Normal, aggressive, lazy, worried, and playful are all dominant genes. Weak and brown are recessive. When determining the panda’s expressed personality, the game follows these rules:

  • If the main gene is dominant, it wins — the hidden gene is ignored regardless of what it is.
  • If the main gene is recessive and the hidden gene is dominant, the dominant hidden gene overrides the recessive main gene.
  • If both genes are recessive, the main gene wins and determines the panda’s personality.

This means getting a brown or weak panda requires both genes to be recessive with the desired gene as the main gene, or both genes to match. In practical terms, the easiest way to guarantee a brown panda is to summon one with both MainGene and HiddenGene set to “brown”.

During breeding, each parent passes one of their two genes (randomly selected) to the offspring. There is also a 1/32 chance per gene of a random mutation occurring, which replaces the inherited gene with a completely random one. This mutation chance is why breeding can occasionally produce unexpected results.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Real-World Inspiration: The brown panda variant is based on the Qinling panda, a real subspecies of the giant panda discovered in the Qinling Mountains of China in the 1960s. Qinling pandas have brown and white fur instead of the typical black and white.
  • Sound Recording Trip: Mojang sound designer Samuel Åberg traveled to Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou, China specifically to record real panda sounds for the game. The same trip was used to record dolphin sounds.
  • Rarest Mob Statistic: The rarest naturally spawning mob configuration in Bedrock Edition involves a baby husk with full equipment riding a brown panda — a combination with roughly a 1 in 3.472 trillion chance of occurring.
  • LEGO Set: Pandas have been featured in LEGO Minecraft sets, reflecting their popularity among the player base.
  • Slowest Land Mob: The lazy panda holds the record for the slowest natural land mob movement speed in the game, excluding speed reductions from status effects like Slowness.
  • Only Mob with Extra Breeding Conditions: The panda is the only animal in Minecraft that requires environmental conditions (nearby bamboo blocks) in addition to the standard food-feeding mechanic to breed. Every other breedable animal just needs the right food item.
