Copper Golem

The Copper Golem is Minecraft’s answer to the question every hoarder has asked at 2 AM while staring at forty unlabeled chests: “Can somebody else please deal with this?” It is a knee-high, passive, buildable golem with a lightning rod sticking out of its head, and its entire job is to pull items out of copper chests and file them into wooden chests that already hold the same thing.

It is not fast. It is not smart. It opens every chest one at a time, stares inside for three full seconds like it is reading a menu, and forgets what it saw the moment it walks away. But it works for free, never sleeps, and never gets bored, which already puts it ahead of most storage systems built by actual people.

There is one catch. Copper golems oxidize over time, and a fully oxidized golem eventually freezes into a statue. Keep a honeycomb handy and your little sorting buddy will stay on the clock forever.

Overview / Quick Stats

Attribute Details
Name Copper Golem
Namespaced Entity ID minecraft:copper_golem (Bedrock numeric ID: 148)
Alignment Passive (utility golem). Never attacks anything and panics when hit.
Dimensions/Hitbox 0.49 blocks wide × 0.98 blocks tall. Small enough to walk through one-block-tall gaps.
Health 12 HP (6 hearts)
Armor 0. Made of metal, protected by nothing.
Base Damage None. The copper golem has no attack on any difficulty:
  • Easy: 0
  • Normal: 0
  • Hard: 0

It sorts items. It does not fight for you.

Movement Speed Java: 0.2 (movement speed attribute), a slow and deliberate walk
Bedrock: Comparable slow walking pace
Knockback Resistance None. Unlike the iron golem, it gets knocked back normally.
Follow/Detection Range Searches for chests in a 65 × 17 × 65 block area centered on itself (32 blocks out horizontally, 8 blocks up and down). Can only open chests up to 1 block above or 2 blocks below its feet.
Experience Drop 0
Spawn Location Does not spawn naturally. Built by the player, reanimated from an unoxidized copper golem statue, or summoned with a spawn egg or command.
First Added Java: 1.21.9 (The Copper Age drop, snapshot 25w31a)
Bedrock: 1.21.111 (experimental since Preview 1.21.100.23)
Last Major Change Java: 1.21.9 (lightning deoxidation and statue timing, pre-releases 1 and 2)
Bedrock: 1.21.111 (pathfinding and chest visibility fixes, Preview 1.21.110.25)

Appearance

  • Model: A short, stubby humanoid a little under one block tall, with a wide boxy head, tiny arms, and a copper lightning rod poking straight up from the top of its head. Think of a wind-up toy that got a job at a warehouse.
  • Face: Big yellow eyes and a prominent nose. With Vibrant Visuals enabled, the eyes glow and the body reflects light like polished metal. The golem itself never emits real light, so it will not stop mobs from spawning near it.
  • Oxidation colors: Fresh golems are bright orange copper. Exposed golems look blotchy with green spots, weathered golems turn mostly green with brown patches, and oxidized golems go full teal. The eyes also dim as the copper ages.
  • Poppy: A golem that accepts a poppy from an iron golem wears it on top of its lightning rod like a tiny flag.
  • Held items: When carrying a stack, the golem holds it out in front of itself in both hands.
  • Animations: It occasionally spins its head all the way around, stares at nearby players, leans into chests while examining them, and flails its arms when it panics.
  • Babies: There are no baby copper golems. Every golem comes out of the build full size.

Behavior & AI

  • Targeting/Aggro: None. The copper golem is completely passive toward players and every other mob. If you hit it, it runs around in a panic instead of fighting back.
  • Core loop: An empty-handed golem walks to the nearest copper chest and grabs up to 16 of the first item it finds. A golem holding items walks to the nearest wooden chest or trapped chest and tries to put them away. Repeat forever.
  • Chest examination: Every chest it opens costs 3 seconds of staring. It cannot see inside a chest without opening it and does not remember which chests held which items, so it re-checks everything each trip.
  • Deposit rule: A destination chest must either be completely empty or already contain the same item type. If neither is true, the golem closes it and moves on to the next nearest chest.
  • Memory limit: It remembers up to 9 chests it already checked. After checking 10 without success, it wanders for 7 seconds, wipes its memory, and starts over. A successful deposit also resets its memory.
  • Pathfinding: Wanders aimlessly when idle while avoiding hazards. Its 0.49-block width lets it squeeze through narrow spaces and one-block-tall passages.
  • Doors: Opens and closes non-iron doors, and actively tries to open any door it can. Iron doors stop it cold.
  • Persistence/Despawn: Never despawns. Unlike most passive mobs, it keeps working even when you are more than 32 blocks away.
  • Daylight: Unaffected. It does not burn and works around the clock.
  • Water: Sinks to the bottom and walks along the floor like an iron golem. It cannot swim, but it also cannot drown.
  • Fall damage: Immune, though it still avoids drops that would hurt a normal mob.
  • Taking items from it: Use an empty hand on a golem that is carrying something and it drops the stack on the ground.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Attack types: None. The only thing a copper golem attacks is your storage mess.
  • Item transport: Carries up to 16 items per trip. It interacts only with copper chests (source), wooden chests, and trapped chests (destinations).
  • Ignored containers: Barrels, ender chests, shulker boxes, hoppers, minecarts with chests, boats with chests, and dropped items on the ground are all invisible to it.
  • Item matching: Matches by item type only. It ignores durability, enchantments, custom names, and anything stored inside bundles or shulker boxes.
  • Potions and arrows: In Java Edition, it cannot tell different potions, tipped arrows, or suspicious stews apart. In Bedrock Edition, it can.
  • Reach: Can only open chests no more than 1 block above or 2 blocks below it. If a chest is exactly 2 blocks down, the golem will drop onto it even if it cannot climb back up.
  • Riding: Can still sort while sitting in a minecart or boat, as long as both chests are within reach and it has enough time to finish. In Java, a riding golem only tries chests directly next to it.
  • Immunities: Fall damage and drowning.
  • Inflicted effects: None.

Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth

  • Food: It does not eat anything. Copper golems run on pure dedication.
  • Taming: Not required. A golem is ready to work the instant it is built.
  • Breeding: Not possible. Every new golem needs a fresh block of copper and a carved pumpkin.
  • Leads: Can be leashed. In Bedrock Edition, a leashed golem stops transporting items until you release it.
  • Name tags: Can be named, and it keeps the name after turning into a statue and back.

Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms

Unoxidized Copper Golem

  • Look: Bright, shiny orange copper.
  • How to get: Build it with an unoxidized block of copper, use a spawn egg, or scrape an unoxidized statue with an axe.

Exposed, Weathered & Oxidized Copper Golems

  • Timing: An unwaxed golem advances one stage every 7 hours to 7 hours 40 minutes of real time (420–460 minutes, or 21–23 in-game days).
  • Offline aging: The timer runs on world game time, so the golem keeps aging even in unloaded chunks.
  • Building pre-aged: A golem built from an exposed, weathered, or oxidized block of copper starts at that same stage.
  • Reversing: Use an axe or let lightning strike it to remove one stage of oxidation at a time.

Waxed Copper Golem

  • How to get: Use a honeycomb on the golem. Building from a waxed block of copper does not work; both the golem and the chest come out unwaxed.
  • Effect: Freezes its current oxidation stage, blocks lightning deoxidation, and stops it from ever turning into a statue.
  • Removing wax: Scrape it with an axe.

Poppy-Crowned Copper Golem

  • How to get: Iron golems occasionally hold out a poppy, and a nearby copper golem can take it and stick it on its lightning rod.
  • Removing: Shears pop the poppy off. It also drops when the golem turns into a statue.

Copper Golem Statue

  • Trigger: A fully oxidized, unwaxed golem has a 0.58% chance per tick to petrify, which takes about 8.62 seconds on average. It must be fully in air and within the build height limit, so it cannot petrify underwater or while standing on a slab.
  • Result: Becomes a block (minecraft:oxidized_copper_golem_statue) in a random pose and drops anything it was holding.
  • Poses: Standing, sitting, running, and star. Use the statue to cycle through them. In Bedrock, your hand must be empty.
  • Revival: Scrape the statue with an axe to remove oxidation one stage at a time. Scraping an unoxidized, unwaxed statue brings the golem back to life.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Wherever you build it. Copper golems never spawn naturally.
Biomes Any
Y-Level Range Any height where you can place the blocks. A golem outside the build height limit cannot petrify.
Light Level Any
Required Block A block of copper (any oxidation stage, waxed or unwaxed) with a carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern placed on top. The pumpkin must be placed last, whether by you, a dispenser, or an enderman. The pattern also works sideways or upside down. The copper block turns into a copper chest facing the same way as the pumpkin, and the golem appears where the pumpkin was.
Group Size Java: 1 per build
Bedrock: 1 per build
Weight Not applicable. It has no natural spawn weight.
Edition Differences Build rules are identical. In both editions a spawn egg creates the golem alone with no copper chest, always unoxidized and unwaxed.

One neat trick: if the new copper chest lands next to an existing copper chest facing the same way, the two merge into a large copper chest. The more oxidized half gets reset to match the less oxidized one, and both end up unwaxed.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Iron golems: Occasionally offer poppies, which copper golems accept and wear. Easily the most wholesome interaction in the game.
  • Cats: A cat sitting on a chest blocks it from opening. The golem marks that chest as visited and moves on, so a lazy cat can quietly break your sorting line.
  • Other copper golems: Two golems never open the same chest at the same time. One waits its turn or goes elsewhere.
  • Endermen and dispensers: Either one can place the final pumpkin and complete a golem build.
  • Lightning: A strike removes one stage of oxidation from an unwaxed golem or statue. Waxed golems ignore it.
  • Chest destruction: If a target chest is broken while the golem is walking to it, the golem marks that spot as visited and carries on.
  • Minecarts and boats: Golems can ride both and still sort if the chests are within reach.
  • Pistons: Copper golem statues break and drop as items when pushed. They cannot be pulled and do not stick to slime or honey blocks.
  • Hostile mobs: With only 6 hearts and zero armor, a stray skeleton arrow or Creeper blast can end your golem’s career fast. Keep your sorting room well lit and walled off.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Copper Ingot 1-3 Guaranteed Roll Drops on death. In Java, each Looting level raises the maximum by 1 (1-6 with Looting III, averaging 3.5). In Bedrock, Looting has no effect and the drop stays 1-3.
Poppy 1 100% (if wearing one) Only drops from a golem that took a poppy from an iron golem. Released by using shears on it or when the golem turns into a statue.
Held Items Up to 16 100% (if carrying) Whatever it was carrying drops when it petrifies into a statue or when you use an empty hand on it.
Copper Golem Statue 1 100% (when mined) Not a mob drop, but the statue block drops itself when broken with any tool. A pickaxe is fastest, and the statue keeps its pose as an item.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Automatic sorting: This is the whole point. Dump mixed loot into a copper chest and the golem files it into wooden chests that already contain one of each item type.
  • Seed your chests: Place one item of each type in its destination chest before you start. Empty chests act as catch-alls, so any unmatched item ends up in the first empty chest the golem finds.
  • Use an overflow chest on purpose: Leave exactly one empty chest as a junk bin, placed far from the input, so the golem tries the correct chests first.
  • Keep it flat: Golems can only open chests 1 block above or 2 blocks below them. Stacking chests three high looks tidy and breaks everything.
  • Stay in range: Build the whole system inside the 65 × 17 × 65 search area. Anything farther out does not exist as far as the golem is concerned.
  • Fewer chests per golem is faster: Every chest check costs 3 seconds, and the golem forgets after 10 misses. Large systems work better split into zones, each with its own copper chest and golem.
  • Wax every worker: One honeycomb saves you from coming back to a room full of statues three real-life days later.
  • Trapped chests for alerts: Trapped chests are valid destinations and emit a redstone signal when opened, so you can wire lamps or counters that react to deliveries.
  • Statue redstone: A comparator reads a statue’s pose (standing 1, sitting 2, running 3, star 4). That makes statues surprisingly good combination-lock pieces and decorative switches.
  • Expected rates: Roughly 16 items per trip, with at least 6 seconds of chest staring (one pickup, one drop-off) plus walking time. It is a background helper, not a hopper replacement for high-volume farms.
  • Edition caveat: In Java, all potions look the same to a golem, so a potion sorter needs a different system. Bedrock golems can tell them apart.

Commands & NBT

Summon a basic copper golem (Java):

/summon minecraft:copper_golem ~ ~ ~

Summon an already oxidized golem (Java):

/summon minecraft:copper_golem ~ ~ ~ {weather_state:"oxidized"}

Summon a permanently waxed golem with a name (Java):

/summon minecraft:copper_golem ~ ~ ~ {next_weather_age:-2L,CustomName:"Sorter"}

Place a statue in the star pose (Java):

/setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:copper_golem_statue[copper_golem_pose=star,facing=south]

Summon a copper golem (Bedrock):

/summon copper_golem ~ ~ ~
  • weather_state: The golem’s oxidation stage. Accepts unaffected, exposed, weathered, or oxidized.
  • next_weather_age: The game time tick when the next oxidation stage begins. Set to -1 to roll a random timer 504,000 to 552,000 ticks ahead, or -2 to make the golem waxed.
  • copper_golem_pose (statue block state): standing, sitting, running, or star.
  • CustomName: Standard name tag data. Persists through statue conversion.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity tags (Java): #minecraft:accepts_iron_golem_gift, #minecraft:can_breathe_under_water, #minecraft:fall_damage_immune
  • Block and item tags (Java): #minecraft:copper_golem_statues covers all eight statue variants.
  • Bedrock families: copper golem, mob
  • Loot table: minecraft:entities/copper_golem
  • Gamerules: Death drops follow minecraft:mob_drops in Java 1.21.11 (renamed from doMobLoot) and domobloot in Bedrock.
  • Translation key: entity.minecraft.copper_golem (Java), entity.copper_golem.name (Bedrock)

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Difficulty: No mechanical changes between Peaceful, Easy, Normal, and Hard. The golem is passive, deals no damage, and stays in the world on every difficulty.
  • Looting: Increases copper ingot drops in Java only.
  • Item matching: Java golems cannot separate potion types, tipped arrow types, or suspicious stew types. Bedrock golems can.
  • Leashing: Bedrock golems stop sorting while leashed.
  • Chest visibility: Bedrock golems ignore chests they cannot see.
  • Statue posing: Bedrock requires an empty hand to cycle poses.
  • Statue stacking: In Bedrock, statues created by petrification in Survival do not stack with other statues.
  • Sound IDs: Java uses entity.copper_golem.* events while Bedrock uses mob.copper_golem.*, and Bedrock has extra “look” sounds.

Sounds & Audio

  • Spawn: entity.copper_golem.spawn (Java), mob.copper_golem.spawn (Bedrock)
  • Take item from copper chest: entity.copper_golem.no_item_get (Java), mob.copper_golem.chest_interaction.take_item (Bedrock)
  • Fail to take item: entity.copper_golem.no_item_no_get (Java), mob.copper_golem.chest_interaction.take_item_fail (Bedrock)
  • Place item in chest: entity.copper_golem.item_drop (Java), mob.copper_golem.chest_interaction.put_item (Bedrock)
  • Fail to place item: entity.copper_golem.item_no_drop (Java), mob.copper_golem.chest_interaction.put_item_fail (Bedrock)
  • Hurt: entity.copper_golem.hurt, entity.copper_golem_weathered.hurt, entity.copper_golem_oxidized.hurt (Java); mob.copper_golem.hurt, mob.copper_golem.weathered.hurt, mob.copper_golem.oxidized.hurt (Bedrock)
  • Death: entity.copper_golem.death, entity.copper_golem_weathered.death, entity.copper_golem_oxidized.death (Java); mob.copper_golem.death and matching weathered and oxidized variants (Bedrock)
  • Head spin: entity.copper_golem.spin and weathered and oxidized variants (Java); mob.copper_golem.regular.spin and variants (Bedrock)
  • Footsteps: entity.copper_golem.step and weathered and oxidized variants (Java); mob.copper_golem.step and variants (Bedrock)
  • Look around (Bedrock only): mob.copper_golem.regular.look, mob.copper_golem.weathered.look, mob.copper_golem.oxidized.look
  • Petrify: entity.copper_golem_become_statue (Java), mob.copper_golem.becoming_statue (Bedrock)
  • Audio note: Exposed golems share the regular sound set. Weathered and oxidized golems get their own creakier versions, so you can hear a golem aging.

History & Major Changes

  • October 13, 2021: Announced as a Minecraft Live 2021 mob vote candidate alongside the allay and the glare. The original pitch had it randomly pressing copper buttons.
  • October 16, 2021: Lost the final round of the vote to the allay with 45.7% of the votes.
  • July 1, 2025: Announced for The Copper Age drop, completely redesigned as an item-sorting mob.
  • Java 25w31a: Added copper golems and copper golem statues.
  • Java 25w33a: Iron golems can now give copper golems poppies, removable with shears.
  • Java 25w34a: Eyes turn invisible with Invisibility; sorting sounds made quieter.
  • Java 25w35a: Hitbox height reduced to 0.98 blocks.
  • Java 25w37a: Width set to 0.49 blocks for narrow pathfinding; golems can now open doors.
  • Java 1.21.9-pre1: Lightning now deoxidizes copper golems.
  • Java 1.21.9-pre2: Golems can petrify as soon as they become fully oxidized.
  • Bedrock Preview 1.21.100.23: Added behind the “Drop 3 2025” experimental toggle.
  • Bedrock 1.21.111: Fully released, including petrification, door opening, poppies, one-block-tall pathfinding, and the leashed-golem sorting stop.
  • Java 1.21.11 and Bedrock 26.0: No changes to the mob itself. Java’s gamerule rename changes doMobLoot to minecraft:mob_drops.
  • Later updates: Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50 add oxidized copper golem statues to abandoned camps.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • No advancement credit: In Java, waxing or scraping a copper golem does not grant Wax On or Wax Off, even though doing the same to a statue does.
  • The one-way drop: A golem will jump down onto a chest 2 blocks below it even if it has no way to climb back up. Design your rooms accordingly or enjoy your new pit employee.
  • Goldfish memory: It never learns which chest holds what, so it checks the same wrong chests over and over.
  • Stack avoidance: It deposits into the frontmost open slot and avoids topping off partial stacks elsewhere, so chests can fill with half stacks.
  • Bedrock statue stacking: Statues created through natural petrification in Survival do not stack with others (MCPE-225273, resolved as Won’t Fix).
  • Slab immunity: A golem standing on a slab or other partial block can never petrify, which works as a free, honeycomb-less way to keep it active.

Advancements/Achievements

  • Unique advancements: None are tied specifically to the copper golem.
  • Wax On / Wax Off (Java): Can be earned by waxing or scraping a copper golem statue, but not the living golem.
  • General mob advancements (Java): Adventure, Take Aim, A Throwaway Joke, Mob Kabob, Arbalistic, and Over-Overkill all count copper golems as valid targets. Hitting your own sorting staff is not recommended.
  • Achievements (Bedrock): Overkill, Over-Overkill, and Mob Kabob can technically be earned on a copper golem.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Designer: The original copper golem concept was pitched by Mojang developer Ulraf, who teased it with emojis weeks before the 2021 vote.
  • Mob vote comeback: It is one of the few mob vote losers to make it into the game, four years after losing to the allay and with an entirely different job.
  • Record holder: “Waxed Weathered Copper Golem Statue” is the longest block name currently in Java Edition at 35 characters with spaces.
  • Lightning rod hat: The rod on its head is not just decoration. A lightning strike knocks off a stage of oxidation, so a thunderstorm counts as a free spa day for an unwaxed golem.
  • Golem friendship: The poppy exchange echoes the iron golem’s classic habit of handing flowers to villagers.
