The Bogged is what happens when a skeleton spends too long sitting in a swamp — it gets mossy, grows mushrooms out of its skull, and starts shooting poison arrows at anyone who wanders too close. Added in the 1.21 Tricky Trials Update, the Bogged is a skeleton variant that trades raw durability for chemical warfare. It has less health and a slower fire rate than a regular skeleton, but every arrow it lands comes with a side of Poison that keeps ticking away at your health bar after the initial hit.
Think of it as the swamp’s answer to the Stray. Strays hang out in frozen biomes and fire Slowness arrows. Bogged hang out in swamps and mangrove swamps and fire Poison arrows. Same concept, different flavor of misery. You will also run into them inside trial chambers, where they serve as the ranged mob for certain trial spawners — the ones decorated with bone blocks and podzol topped with red mushrooms.
The Bogged blends into swamp terrain disturbingly well. That mossy green skin and the mushrooms growing out of its head make it look like part of the scenery until it puts an arrow in your back. Swamps were already home to witches, slimes, and questionable water, so naturally Mojang thought what they really needed was a skeleton that poisons you.

Appearance
The Bogged uses the standard skeleton model as its base, but someone at Mojang clearly had fun with the texture work. The entire body is covered in a dark greenish-brown layer of moss and muck, giving it the look of something that crawled out of a peat bog after being there for a few centuries. Two mushrooms — one red and one brown — grow directly out of the top of its skull, which is simultaneously the most disgusting and most useful thing about this mob (more on that later).
Its eyes glow with the same hollow white light as a regular skeleton, but the rest of the model has a distinctly organic, decayed quality to it. Vines and algae-like textures wrap around its ribcage and limbs. The overall color palette is swamp-green and earthy brown, which means it blends into its home biome almost perfectly — especially at night, when the dark swamp terrain makes it hard to spot until you are already taking damage.
The Bogged carries a bow in the same manner as a regular skeleton, held in either the right hand (89% chance) or left hand (11% chance in Java Edition). When sheared with shears, the mushrooms on its head visually disappear, leaving a bald, mossy skeleton that looks slightly less ridiculous but is still just as hostile.
Behavior & AI
- Targeting: The Bogged targets players within 16 blocks and attacks by firing arrows of Poison from its bow. It follows standard skeleton targeting AI — if it sees you, it is already drawing its bow.
- Fire Rate: This is the big difference. A regular skeleton reloads in 2.0 seconds. A Bogged takes 3.5 seconds between shots. That extra 1.5 seconds is noticeable and gives you a wider window to close distance or return fire.
- Pathfinding: Standard skeleton pathfinding. It will strafe sideways while shooting, back away from players who get close, and path around obstacles. It avoids cliffs, fire, lava, and cactus.
- Sunlight: The Bogged is undead, so it burns in direct sunlight just like a regular skeleton. It will seek shade or water to avoid burning. If it is wearing a helmet, the helmet absorbs the fire damage until it breaks.
- Water: Bogged sink in water and cannot swim. They walk along the bottom. They do not take drowning damage because, well, they are already dead. Being underwater does make them significantly less dangerous since arrow physics get ruined by water.
- Powder Snow: Unlike regular skeletons, the Bogged does not convert into a Stray when exposed to powder snow. It simply takes freezing damage and dies. This is one of the key behavioral differences from the standard skeleton.
- Despawning: Follows standard hostile mob despawn rules. Will despawn if the player is more than 128 blocks away, and may randomly despawn if the player is more than 32 blocks away. Persistent if name-tagged or picked up items.
- Idle Behavior: Wanders aimlessly when no player is in range. Will pick up items off the ground, including weapons and armor, same as a regular skeleton.
Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects
- Poison Arrows: Every arrow fired by a Bogged is a tipped arrow of Poison. On hit, the target takes the initial arrow damage (varies by difficulty) plus a Poison effect lasting 4 seconds that deals 3 additional damage (1.5 hearts) over its duration. Poison cannot kill you — it will leave you at half a heart — but the arrow damage certainly can.
- Reload Speed: 3.5 seconds between shots, compared to 2.0 seconds for a regular skeleton. This slower rate is the trade-off for the poison. In practice, it means the Bogged fires roughly 57% as fast as a skeleton.
- Arrow Accuracy: Same as a regular skeleton. Accuracy decreases at longer range and on higher difficulties the arrows are more precise. Strafing is your friend.
- Melee Fallback: If given a melee weapon through commands or item pickup, a Bogged will drop its bow and charge into melee, same as a skeleton. Without a weapon, it has no melee attack.
- Undead Properties: Healed by Instant Damage potions, harmed by Instant Health potions. Takes extra damage from the Smite enchantment. Immune to Poison and Regeneration effects. Can be targeted by the Wither but is still attacked by iron golems.
- Shield Interaction: Arrows can be fully blocked with a shield. Since poison is applied by the arrow, blocking the arrow also blocks the poison. A shield is one of the most effective counters to the Bogged.
Spawning
| Spawn Condition | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Surface and underground in swamp biomes; Trial Chambers via trial spawners |
| Biomes | Swamp, Mangrove Swamp |
| Y-Level Range | Any valid spawning Y-level within the biome (follows standard hostile mob height rules) |
| Light Level | 0 (same as standard hostile mob spawning in the Overworld) |
| Required Block | Spawns on any solid block with sufficient space above (2 blocks of air needed) |
| Group Size | Java: Up to 4 Bedrock: Up to 4 |
| Weight | Shares spawning pool with other hostile mobs in swamp biomes; does not replace regular skeleton spawns entirely |
| Edition Differences | No major spawning differences between Java and Bedrock. Both editions support natural spawning in swamp biomes and trial spawner spawning in trial chambers. |
In trial chambers, the Bogged is assigned as a possible ranged mob for trial spawners. You can identify a Bogged trial spawner by the bone blocks and podzol with red mushrooms decorating it. In single-player, three Bogged spawn initially, and one more spawns each time you kill one, up to a total of six from a single spawner.
Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs
- Iron Golems: Iron golems will attack Bogged on sight, same as any hostile mob. The Bogged will retaliate with poison arrows, though the golem could not care less about poison since it is immune to status effects.
- Wolves: Tamed wolves will attack Bogged. Wild wolves are neutral toward them.
- Witches: Since Bogged share the swamp biome with witches, you can sometimes end up being poisoned from two different sources at once. The swamp becomes a Poison party nobody asked for.
- Creepers: If a Bogged accidentally shoots a Creeper, the Creeper becomes hostile toward the Bogged. Standard skeleton-Creeper interaction rules apply — which means a Creeper killed by a Bogged arrow will drop a music disc.
- Other Skeletons: Bogged can coexist with regular skeletons. They do not fight each other. Friendly fire from other skeletons can redirect aggro as normal.
- Boats and Minecarts: Bogged can ride in boats and minecarts. A Bogged trapped in a boat will still shoot at nearby players, which can be both dangerous and hilarious depending on the context.
- Wither: The Wither will attack Bogged since they are undead mobs. This is standard Wither behavior — it targets everything that is not also a Wither.
Drops & Loot
| Item | Quantity | Chance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bone | 0–2 | 100% | Maximum increases by 1 per level of Looting, up to 0–5 with Looting III. |
| Arrow | 0–2 | 100% | Maximum increases by 1 per level of Looting, up to 0–5 with Looting III. |
| Arrow of Poison | 1 | 50% | Only drops when killed by a player or tamed wolf. Chance increases with Looting: ~62.5% at Looting I, ~75% at Looting II, ~93.75% at Looting III. The dropped arrow has a 5-second poison duration. |
| Bow (damaged) | 1 | 8.5% | Only drops when killed by a player or tamed wolf. Chance increases with Looting: 9.5% at Looting I, 10.5% at Looting II, 11.5% at Looting III. The bow is always damaged and may be enchanted. |
| Mushroom (via Shearing) | 2 | 100% | Using shears on a living Bogged drops 2 mushrooms — either red, brown, or one of each. The mushrooms on its head visually disappear after shearing. Does not kill the mob. Can only be sheared once. |
| Experience Orbs | 5 | 100% | Dropped when killed by a player or tamed wolf. Extra 1–3 XP per naturally spawned equipment piece. |
Player Uses & Farming
- Poison Arrow Farming: The Bogged is the easiest renewable source of arrows of Poison in the game. Building a Bogged farm in a swamp biome gives you a steady supply of tipped arrows without needing to brew a single potion or mess around with a cauldron and lingering potions. For players who use tipped arrows, this is a significant time-saver.
- Mushroom Farming: Shearing Bogged provides a unique, renewable source of mushrooms. While there are easier ways to get mushrooms, the Bogged method is the only one that involves combat, which is either a feature or a flaw depending on your perspective. Trap one in a boat, shear it, and you have two free mushrooms.
- Farm Design Basics: A Bogged farm works on the same principles as a skeleton farm. You need a spawnable area in a swamp or mangrove swamp biome, a collection system (water channels pushing Bogged to a kill chamber), and a way to deal the final blow yourself or with a tamed wolf so the poison arrows actually drop. Looting III sword is highly recommended to push that poison arrow drop rate up to roughly 94%.
- XP Farming: At 5 XP per kill, Bogged are comparable to regular skeletons for experience farming. The slower fire rate actually makes them slightly safer to deal with in a manual kill chamber.
- Trial Chamber Farming: Trial spawners with Bogged offer a good source of arrows of Poison alongside trial chamber loot. Since trial spawners regenerate, this is a repeatable source — though less efficient than a dedicated overworld farm.
- Edition Note: Farm designs work in both Java and Bedrock, though as with all mob farms, spawn rates and mechanics may differ slightly between editions. Always test your farm on your specific edition.
Commands & NBT
Here are some useful commands for working with the Bogged:

Summons a basic Bogged at your location.
/summon minecraft:bogged ~ ~ ~ {HandItems:[{id:"minecraft:bow",Count:1b,components:{"minecraft:enchantments":{levels:{"minecraft:power":5}}}}]}
Summons a Bogged with a Power V bow. Now that is just mean.
/summon minecraft:bogged ~ ~ ~ {PersistenceRequired:1b,CustomName:'"Swamp Thing"'}
Summons a persistent, named Bogged that will not despawn. Perfect for guarding your swamp base.
/summon minecraft:bogged ~ ~ ~ {NoAI:1b}
Summons a Bogged with no AI — it just stands there looking mossy. Useful for decoration or map making.
Notable NBT keys for the Bogged (Java Edition):
PersistenceRequired— Set to1bto prevent despawning.HandItems— Controls what the Bogged holds. First slot is main hand (bow by default).ArmorItems— Four slots: feet, legs, chest, head. Can equip armor to Bogged via commands.CustomName— Assigns a visible name tag to the mob.NoAI— Disables all AI behavior. The Bogged stands still and does nothing.LeftHanded— Set to1bto make the Bogged left-handed.CanPickUpLoot— Controls whether the Bogged can pick up dropped items.
Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks
- Entity Tags (Java):
#minecraft:skeletons— the Bogged is included in this tag, meaning any data pack or command targeting skeletons also targets the Bogged. - Entity Tags:
#minecraft:undead— included as an undead mob, affected by Smite and undead-specific mechanics. - Gamerule:
doMobSpawning— controls whether Bogged can naturally spawn. Set tofalseto disable. - Gamerule:
doMobLoot— controls whether Bogged drop items on death. Set tofalseto disable drops. - Loot Table Path (Java):
minecraft:entities/bogged— can be overridden in data packs to customize drops. - Shearing Loot Table (Java):
minecraft:shearing/bogged— controls what drops when a Bogged is sheared. - Spawn Egg: Available in Creative mode. In Bedrock Edition, spawn events include
minecraft:entity_bornandminecraft:entity_spawned.
Difficulty & Edition Differences
- Easy: Arrow damage is 3 (1.5 hearts). Poison still deals 3 damage over 4 seconds. Total potential damage per hit: 6 (3 hearts).
- Normal: Arrow damage is 4 (2 hearts). Total potential damage per hit: 7 (3.5 hearts).
- Hard: Arrow damage is 5 (2.5 hearts). Total potential damage per hit: 8 (4 hearts). Bogged are more likely to spawn with armor and enchanted bows on Hard.
- Java vs. Bedrock — Hitbox: Java hitbox is 0.6 × 1.99 blocks. Bedrock hitbox is 0.6 × 1.9 blocks. Slightly shorter on Bedrock.
- Java vs. Bedrock — Handedness: Java Edition has an 11% chance for left-handed Bogged. Bedrock Edition Bogged are always right-handed.
- Java vs. Bedrock — Powder Snow: In both editions, Bogged die from freezing damage instead of converting to Strays. Only regular skeletons undergo the Stray conversion.
- Java vs. Bedrock — Trial Chambers: Trial spawner mechanics are consistent across both editions. Three Bogged spawn initially in single-player, with up to six total per spawner.
Sounds & Audio
entity.bogged.ambient— The idle sound. Similar to a skeleton’s rattle but with a wetter, more organic quality.entity.bogged.hurt— Played when the Bogged takes damage.entity.bogged.death— Played when the Bogged is killed.entity.bogged.step— Footstep sounds when the Bogged walks.entity.bogged.shear— The sound played when shears are used on the Bogged to harvest mushrooms.
History & Major Changes
- Java 24w07a (February 2024): Bogged added as an experimental mob for the 1.21 update. Initial version included poison arrows and swamp spawning.
- Java 24w09a (February 2024): Shearing mechanic added — players can use shears on a Bogged to harvest mushrooms from its head.
- Java 1.21 (June 2024): Bogged officially released as part of the Tricky Trials Update. No longer experimental.
- Bedrock 1.21.0 (June 2024): Bogged added to Bedrock Edition with the same update.
Notable Bugs & Quirks
- Bogged arrows technically fire poison-tipped arrows, but the poison only applies if the arrow actually connects. Arrows blocked by shields do not apply the Poison effect.
- A sheared Bogged retains its hitbox and behavior — it is purely a visual change. You cannot shear the same Bogged twice.
- Bogged do not convert to Strays in powder snow, which is inconsistent with how regular skeletons behave. This is intentional, not a bug — Mojang confirmed it is by design.
- In rare cases, a Bogged can spawn riding a spider, creating a Bogged Spider Jockey. This is the same jockey mechanic that applies to regular skeletons. A poison-arrow-firing spider mount is exactly as annoying as it sounds.
Advancements / Achievements
- Monster Hunter (Java): Kill any hostile mob. The Bogged counts toward this advancement.
- Monsters Hunted (Java): Kill one of every hostile mob. The Bogged is included in this list as of 1.21.
- Adventure (Java): Kill at least one of every hostile mob type, or at least one of a subset — the Bogged counts.
- Monster Hunter (Bedrock): Kill any hostile mob. Same as Java.
Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia
- The Bogged was officially revealed on Valentine’s Day 2024 — Mojang called it their “Valentine” for the year, which is either charming or concerning depending on your dating standards.
- The name “Bogged” is a reference to the idiom “bogged down,” meaning to be stuck or slowed. It also likely references bog bodies — real-world mummified remains found preserved in peat bogs, which is a genuinely creepy inspiration for a Minecraft mob.
- The Bogged completes a biome-specific skeleton trio: regular skeletons spawn everywhere, Strays spawn in cold biomes, and Bogged spawn in swamps. If Mojang follows this pattern, we might eventually get skeleton variants for deserts, jungles, or oceans — though that is pure speculation.
- The shearing mechanic is shared with only one other mob in the game — the Mooshroom. Both drop mushrooms when sheared, and both visually change afterward. The Bogged is the first hostile mob that can be sheared.
- The Bogged has quickly become a favorite among builders and map makers because its mossy, overgrown design fits perfectly into ruins, abandoned temples, and swamp-themed adventure maps.
