The Shulker is one of those mobs that redefines what “annoying” means in Minecraft. It sits inside an End City looking like just another purpur block — blending into the walls, floors, and ceilings like a deadly piece of furniture. Then you walk too close, its shell pops open, and it shoots a homing projectile at your face that makes you float uncontrollably into the sky. If the fall does not kill you, the next bullet will send you right back up for round two.

Shulkers are the guardians of End Cities and End Ships, and they take that job personally. They are the main reason looting these structures feels less like exploration and more like navigating a building full of sentient turrets. Every hallway is a potential ambush, every corner a possible launch pad into the void. But the reward for dealing with them is enormous — shulker shells are the key ingredient for crafting shulker boxes, which are arguably the single most useful storage item in the entire game.

Love them or hate them (you will hate them), shulkers are a mob you need to understand if you ever plan on raiding End Cities. And since shulker boxes are basically mandatory for any serious inventory management, understanding how these things work is not optional — it is survival.

Appearance

A shulker looks like a purpur block with a living creature hiding inside it. When the shell is closed, it is nearly indistinguishable from the purpur blocks that make up End Cities — which is exactly the point. The shell is a box with the same texture as a purpur block on all sides, and the creature inside is a small yellow-green head with two beady eyes.

When the shell opens, the lid lifts up to reveal the mob’s actual body — a tiny, squishy-looking head peeking out from inside. The opening animation is smooth and deliberate, like a treasure chest that wants to kill you. The shell can attach to any face of a block, meaning shulkers can sit on walls, ceilings, and floors, which makes them even harder to spot before they start shooting.

Shulkers can be dyed in all 16 colors using commands or by being hit by a shulker bullet from another shulker (in Java Edition, this is part of the duplication mechanic). The default color is the standard purpur purple, which matches their End City habitat perfectly. Dyed variants retain the same shape and animation but sport a tinted shell matching the dye color.

Behavior & AI

  • Targeting: Shulkers target any player within 16 blocks that they have line of sight to. They do not aggro on other mobs by default. Once a target is acquired, the shulker opens its shell and begins firing.
  • Shell Mechanics: The shell stays closed when no target is nearby. When a target is detected, the shell opens for 1-5 seconds to fire a bullet, then closes again briefly before reopening. While the shell is closed, the shulker has 20 natural armor points, making attacks deal almost no damage. Hitting a closed shulker is mostly a waste of time and durability.
  • Stationary Behavior: Shulkers do not move in the traditional sense. They are attached to the surface of a block and stay locked in place. They can face any direction — up, down, north, south, east, west — and remain attached to their block until provoked into teleporting.
  • Teleportation: When a shulker is hit and its health drops below half (below 15 health points), it has a chance to teleport to a nearby valid block surface within a 17x17x17 cube centered on itself. It searches for a solid block face with an air block for its body. This teleportation makes them tricky to pin down in tight End City corridors.
  • Despawning: Shulkers do not despawn naturally. They are persistent mobs, which means every shulker you leave alive will still be there next time you visit. This also means killing them has permanent consequences — once they are gone from an End City, they are gone (unless you use the duplication mechanic).
  • Water and Lava: Shulkers can survive in water and are not damaged by it. They do take damage from lava. If their attached block is removed, they attempt to teleport to a new valid surface.
  • Idle Behavior: When no players are nearby, shulkers remain with their shell closed, perfectly blending into the purpur block architecture. They occasionally peek open briefly even without a target, which can give away their position if you are watching carefully.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Shulker Bullet: The shulker’s primary and only attack. When the shell opens, the shulker fires a single guided projectile called a shulker bullet. This bullet tracks the target player, changing direction to home in on them. The bullet moves slowly but persistently, following the player around corners and through doorways. It deals 4 damage (2 hearts) on impact regardless of difficulty.
  • Levitation Effect: On hit, the shulker bullet inflicts Levitation for 10 seconds. This causes the player to float upward at a rate of about 0.9 blocks per second. In an End City — which is a tall, narrow structure floating over the void — this is absolutely devastating. You float up, the effect wears off, and then gravity introduces you to either the ground at terminal velocity or the endless void below.
  • Bullet Behavior: Shulker bullets travel along one axis at a time, making sharp 90-degree turns to track their target. They can be destroyed by hitting them with any attack (including a bare fist), by another projectile, or by colliding with a block. They also have a maximum lifespan and will despawn after about 60 seconds if they have not hit anything. Shields block shulker bullets completely.
  • Fire Rate: A shulker fires approximately one bullet every 1-5.5 seconds while the shell is open. The shell closes periodically between shots, creating windows where the shulker cannot fire but also cannot be effectively damaged.
  • Armor While Closed: The 20 armor points while the shell is closed reduce incoming damage significantly. A diamond sword hit against a closed shulker deals roughly 2-3 damage instead of the full 7. Always wait for the shell to open before attacking.
  • Immunity to Projectiles (Closed): Arrows and tridents bounce off a closed shulker shell. The projectile is deflected and deals no damage. Only melee attacks deal reduced damage to a closed shell. When the shell is open, projectiles work normally.

Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms

Shulker Duplication (Java Edition)

  • Mechanic: In Java Edition, when a shulker is hit by a shulker bullet from another shulker, there is a chance the hit shulker will duplicate — spawning a new shulker nearby. The chance depends on how many shulkers are already in the area. If fewer than 6 shulkers are within an 8-block radius, the hit shulker has a chance to spawn a new one.
  • Color Inheritance: The duplicated shulker spawns with a random color that does not necessarily match the original. This is the only way to obtain naturally colored shulkers without commands.
  • Farming Implications: This mechanic is the foundation of renewable shulker farms in Java Edition. By positioning two shulkers so they shoot each other, players can create an infinite supply of shulkers and, by extension, shulker shells. This was a game-changing addition in 1.17.
  • Bedrock Edition: This duplication mechanic does not exist in Bedrock Edition. Shulkers in Bedrock are a finite resource within each End City, making shulker shells significantly harder to stockpile.

Dyed Shulkers

  • Colors: Shulkers can exist in all 16 dye colors. In survival, colored shulkers only appear through the duplication mechanic (Java Edition). In creative or via commands, any color can be assigned.
  • Visual Difference: The shell texture is tinted to match the dye color. The body inside remains the same yellow-green regardless of shell color.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location End Cities in the outer End islands
Biomes End Midlands, End Highlands (wherever End Cities generate)
Y-Level Range Any Y-level within the End City structure (typically Y 40-100+)
Light Level Any (light level does not affect shulker spawning)
Required Block Shulkers spawn as part of End City structure generation. They do not spawn dynamically — they are placed when the structure is first generated.
Group Size Java: Varies by End City layout; typically 2-6 per tower section
Bedrock: Same distribution as Java
Weight N/A (structure-based spawning, not weight-based mob cap spawning)
Edition Differences Spawn behavior is identical between Java and Bedrock. The key difference is that Java Edition allows shulker duplication (1.17+), effectively making them a renewable mob. Bedrock has no duplication mechanic.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Endermen: Shulkers and Endermen can coexist in End Cities without conflict. However, if a shulker bullet accidentally hits an Enderman, the Enderman will teleport away but will not retaliate against the shulker. Endermen can also teleport into spaces occupied by shulkers, sometimes causing visual overlap.
  • Other Shulkers: In Java Edition, shulker bullets hitting other shulkers trigger the duplication mechanic. This is the only meaningful shulker-to-shulker interaction and it is enormously important for farming.
  • Iron Golems: Shulkers will target and fire at iron golems within range. The levitation effect applies to golems as well, which is both funny and useless since golems have no practical reason to be in End Cities.
  • Block Attachment: If the block a shulker is attached to is destroyed, the shulker attempts to teleport to a nearby valid surface. If no valid surface exists within range, the shulker falls and reattaches to whatever block it lands on. They can attach to any solid block face — top, bottom, or any side.
  • Pistons: Shulkers can be moved by pistons. When pushed, they detach from their current block and reattach at the destination. This is used in some advanced farm designs to reposition shulkers.
  • Boats and Minecarts: Shulkers can be placed in boats and minecarts using precise timing or commands. This is primarily useful for transporting them in farm builds. They continue to fire at targets while riding.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Shulker Shell 0-1 50% Each level of Looting adds 6.25% to the drop chance: 56.25% with Looting I, 62.5% with Looting II, 68.75% with Looting III. You need 2 shells to craft one shulker box.
Experience 5 Guaranteed Dropped when killed by a player or tamed wolf.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Shulker Boxes: The entire reason you care about shulkers. Two shulker shells plus one chest crafts a shulker box — a portable storage container that keeps its contents when broken. Each box holds 27 stacks of items. This single item revolutionizes inventory management, especially for long mining trips, building projects, and moving bases. There is no substitute.
  • Shulker Farming (Java Edition): The duplication mechanic in Java Edition allows players to build farms that produce unlimited shulker shells. The basic principle: position two shulkers so they can shoot each other, collect the duplicated shulkers, and kill them for shells. Designs range from simple two-shulker setups to elaborate automated farms using pistons, water streams, and entity processing. Expected rates vary by design but a well-built farm can produce 100+ shells per hour.
  • Shulker Farming (Bedrock Edition): Since Bedrock has no duplication mechanic, “farming” shulkers means raiding End Cities. Players need to explore the outer End islands, locate End Cities, and kill every shulker they find. Bring Looting III to maximize shell drops. This is significantly more time-consuming than Java farming, so Bedrock players tend to treat shulker shells as a more precious resource.
  • Levitation Source: Shulker bullets are the only survival-obtainable source of the Levitation effect. Some creative players use shulkers in builds to create elevators — positioning a shulker to shoot players upward through a vertical shaft. Impractical but impressive.
  • Key Farm Design Principles (Java): Keep the shulker count below 6 within an 8-block radius to maintain duplication rates. Use solid blocks for the shulkers to attach to and open air for bullets to travel. Water streams or minecart collection systems move duplicated shulkers to a kill chamber. Lava blades or entity cramming can automate the killing, but player kills are needed for XP.

Commands & NBT

Here are some useful commands for working with shulkers:

/summon minecraft:shulker ~ ~ ~ {Color:0b}

Summons a white shulker. Color values range from 0 (white) to 15 (black), matching the standard dye color IDs.

/summon minecraft:shulker ~ ~ ~ {AttachFace:0b,NoAI:1b}

Summons a shulker facing down (attached to the bottom of a block above) with no AI. Useful for decoration or controlled farm setups.

/summon minecraft:shulker ~ ~ ~ {Health:1f,Invulnerable:0b}

Summons a shulker with 1 health point — one hit and it is done.

/summon minecraft:shulker ~ ~ ~ {Peek:100b}

Summons a shulker with its shell fully open. Peek values range from 0 (closed) to 100 (fully open).

Notable NBT keys:

  • Color — Byte value 0-15 controlling shell color. Default is 16 (purple, the natural color).
  • Peek — Byte value 0-100 controlling how far the shell is open. Purely visual when set manually; the AI overrides this during normal behavior.
  • AttachFace — Byte value 0-5 controlling which face the shulker is attached to. 0 = down, 1 = up, 2 = north, 3 = south, 4 = west, 5 = east.
  • APX, APY, APZ — Integer coordinates of the block the shulker is attached to.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Type Tag: minecraft:shulker — can be targeted in commands and datapacks.
  • Mob Category: Falls under the monster mob cap category for spawning purposes, though this is largely irrelevant since shulkers spawn as part of structure generation, not the regular mob spawning cycle.
  • Loot Table Path: minecraft:entities/shulker — can be modified via datapacks to change drop rates, add new drops, or adjust Looting scaling.
  • Entity Tags: Shulkers are included in the following entity type tags:
    • #minecraft:fall_damage_immune — shulkers take no fall damage
    • #minecraft:non_controlling_rider
  • Gamerule Interactions: mobGriefing does not affect shulkers since they do not modify blocks. doMobLoot controls whether shulker shells drop on death.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Difficulty Scaling: Unlike most hostile mobs, shulker bullet damage does not scale with difficulty — it deals 4 damage (2 hearts) on all difficulty levels. The Levitation duration remains 10 seconds across all difficulties as well. The real difficulty scaling is indirect: on Hard, other End City hazards (like Endermen) are more dangerous, and the consequences of falling from Levitation are the same regardless.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Duplication: The most significant edition difference. Java Edition (1.17+) allows shulkers to duplicate when hit by another shulker’s bullet, making shells a renewable resource. Bedrock Edition has no such mechanic, meaning shulker shells are limited to what spawns in End Cities.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Teleportation: The teleportation behavior is functionally the same in both editions, but Bedrock shulkers may teleport slightly more aggressively in tight spaces due to differences in pathfinding calculations.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Bullet Tracking: Shulker bullets behave identically in both editions — axis-aligned movement with 90-degree turns to track the player. Both editions allow bullets to be deflected by hitting them.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Color: The default shulker color byte is 16 in Java (rendering as the natural purple). In Bedrock, the default color is also purple but the internal handling differs slightly. Functional behavior is the same.

Sounds & Audio

  • Ambient: entity.shulker.ambient — a soft, clicking sound the shulker makes periodically. Subtle but distinctive enough to alert you that one is nearby.
  • Open: entity.shulker.open — the sound of the shell opening. This is your cue that a bullet is incoming.
  • Close: entity.shulker.close — the shell snapping shut. This tells you the armor is back up and attacking is pointless.
  • Hurt: entity.shulker.hurt — a crunchy, block-like sound when the shulker takes damage.
  • Hurt (Closed): entity.shulker.hurt_closed — a duller, muffled version played when hitting a closed shell. If you hear this, you are wasting your time.
  • Death: entity.shulker.death — the satisfying crunch of a defeated shulker.
  • Bullet Hit: entity.shulker_bullet.hit — the impact sound when a bullet connects with a player or entity.
  • Bullet Hurt: entity.shulker_bullet.hurt — plays when a bullet is destroyed by the player.
  • Teleport: entity.shulker.teleport — similar to an Enderman teleport sound. Tells you the shulker just relocated and you need to find it again.

History & Major Changes

  • Java 1.9 (15w31a): Shulkers added to the game as part of the Combat Update, alongside End Cities and End Ships. Originally the only way to obtain shulker shells.
  • Java 1.9 (15w33c): Shulker shells added as drops. Before this snapshot, shulkers dropped nothing — making them pointless to kill.
  • Java 1.9 (15w34a): Shulkers can now be pushed by pistons.
  • Java 1.11: Shulker boxes added to the game, giving shulker shells their purpose. This is when shulker farming became relevant.
  • Java 1.17 (21w03a): Shulker duplication mechanic added. When hit by a shulker bullet, a shulker can spawn a new shulker if fewer than 6 are nearby. This was the single biggest quality-of-life change for late-game storage, making shulker shells renewable.
  • Bedrock 1.0.0: Shulkers added to Bedrock Edition alongside the End dimension content.
  • Bedrock 1.27.0 (anticipated): As of current versions, Bedrock still does not have the duplication mechanic.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Invisible Shulkers: In some versions, shulkers that teleport into unloaded chunks can become invisible when the chunk reloads. They are still there — they still shoot — you just cannot see them. Getting hit by a levitation bullet from an invisible source is a special kind of terrifying.
  • Shulker Stacking: Multiple shulkers can occupy the same block space if spawned via commands. This creates a cursed turret that fires multiple bullets simultaneously. Fun in creative, nightmarish in survival.
  • Bullet Through Walls: Shulker bullets can occasionally clip through thin walls (especially single-block walls at certain angles) due to their axis-aligned movement and entity collision handling. This is rare but memorable when it happens.
  • Teleport Into Void: In rare cases, shulkers near the edge of End City platforms can teleport to a position with no valid block below them. They fall into the void and die, taking their potential shell drop with them. Frustrating if it was the last shulker in the structure.

Advancements / Achievements

  • Monster Hunter (Java): Kill any hostile mob. Shulkers count toward this advancement.
  • Monsters Hunted (Java): Kill one of every hostile mob. Shulkers are on this list, so you need to kill at least one to complete it.
  • Adventuring Time (Java): Not directly related, but you need to visit the End biomes where shulkers live.
  • Monster Hunter (Bedrock): Kill a hostile mob. Same as Java — shulkers qualify.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Name Origin: “Shulker” is a portmanteau of “shell” and “lurker” — which is exactly what they do. They lurk inside a shell. The name is more honest than most mob names in this game.
  • Real-World Inspiration: Shulkers are loosely inspired by box molds and barnacles — organisms that encase themselves in hard shells and are fixed to surfaces. The homing projectile has no real-world equivalent, which is probably for the best.
  • Community Nickname: Players commonly refer to shulker boxes simply as “shulkers,” which creates confusion since the mob and the crafted item share the same shorthand. Context is everything.
  • Minecraft Dungeons: Shulkers do not appear in Minecraft Dungeons as enemies, though End-themed content has been discussed by the community.
  • Shulker Box Revolution: Before shulker boxes were added in 1.11, large-scale inventory management in Minecraft was a logistical nightmare. Ender chests helped, but shulker boxes fundamentally changed how players interact with storage. They are one of the most important items ever added to the game.
  • Texture Camouflage: The shulker’s closed shell texture is identical to the purpur block texture. This was an intentional design choice by Mojang to make End City exploration more dangerous and to reward players who observe their surroundings carefully.
