Sniffer

The sniffer is proof that Minecraft players will vote for literally anything if it is cute enough. This six-legged prehistoric behemoth won the 2022 Mob Vote with 55% of the vote — nearly two million players chose an extinct dinosaur over a golem and a cave-dwelling trickster — and honestly, looking at it, you get why. It is enormous, it is adorable, and it digs up ancient seeds like a golden retriever finding tennis balls buried in the yard.

Unlike almost every other mob in the game, the sniffer does not spawn naturally anywhere in your world. It is extinct. Gone. Finished. The only way to bring one back is to find a sniffer egg buried in suspicious sand inside warm ocean ruins, brush it out with a copper brush, place the egg, and wait for a snifflet to hatch. It is basically Jurassic Park, but with more blocks and fewer velociraptors trying to eat you in a kitchen.

Once your snifflet grows up — which takes a full 40 real-time minutes, twice as long as most baby mobs — it will spend its days wandering around, occasionally pressing its massive yellow beak into the ground and digging up torchflower seeds or pitcher pods. These are exclusive decorative plant seeds that no other mob or mechanic in the game can produce. The sniffer is the only way to get them. That alone makes this big leafy dinosaur worth every minute of the underwater archaeology it takes to find one.

Appearance

The sniffer is one of the largest passive mobs in the game, and it looks the part. Its body is a bulky, bushy mass covered in dark green and reddish-brown textures that give it a leafy, overgrown look — like a dinosaur that has been sleeping underground so long that plants started growing on it. Which, lore-wise, is essentially what happened.

It has six stubby legs arranged in a row on each side, making its walk cycle look like a centipede trying its best. On the front sits a massive yellow beak — the nose responsible for all that ancient seed sniffing — flanked by two long, feathery ears that stick up above its eyes. The overall silhouette is somewhere between “friendly dinosaur” and “mobile garden hedge.”

Baby sniffers, called snifflets, share the same basic design but with the classic Minecraft baby proportions: an oversized head relative to a smaller body. They are comically cute. You will want to protect them at all costs, which is convenient because they have the same 14 HP as an adult and absolutely zero ability to defend themselves.

Behavior & AI

  • Idle Behavior: Sniffers wander aimlessly, much like cows or sheep, avoiding hazards like water, lava, fire, and ledges tall enough to cause fall damage. They are not in a hurry to get anywhere, and honestly neither should you be.
  • Sniffing & Digging: Periodically, an adult sniffer will stop, press its nose to the ground, and begin searching for ancient seeds. When it finds one, it performs a “sploot” — lying flat on the ground — and digs with its nose until it uncovers either a torchflower seed or a pitcher pod. After digging, it shakes its head with visible joy.
  • Digging Requirements: The sniffer must be standing on solid ground, not in water, not riding a boat or minecart, and not currently doing anything else. The block beneath its head (defined as 2.25 blocks in front of its center) must be a diggable block and reachable.
  • Digging Memory: A sniffer remembers the last 20 locations where it has dug. It will not dig in the same spot twice until the memory fills up and old locations cycle out.
  • Digging Cooldown: After each successful dig, an 8-minute cooldown starts before the sniffer can dig again.
  • Minimum Space: Sniffers need approximately a 6×6 area of diggable blocks to reliably begin their sniffing behavior.
  • Tempting: Sniffers are attracted to players holding torchflower seeds and will follow the player within approximately 10 blocks.
  • Persistence / Despawn: Sniffers do not despawn naturally. Since they can only exist by being hatched or summoned, they are treated as persistent entities. Name tags are not required to keep them around.
  • Snifflet Behavior: Unlike most baby mobs, snifflets do not follow their parents. They also cannot dig for seeds — only adults can do that.
  • Passive Nature: The sniffer never attacks, even when hit. It just absorbs damage and moves away, like a very large, very peaceful punching bag.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Seed Digging (Unique Ability): The sniffer’s only real ability is digging up ancient seeds — torchflower seeds and pitcher pods — from the following diggable blocks: dirt, grass block, podzol, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, moss block, mud, and muddy mangrove roots. In Java Edition, this list can be modified via the minecraft:sniffer_diggable_block block tag in data packs.
  • No Attacks: The sniffer has no attack of any kind. Zero damage output. It is a 14 HP loot piñata with no defense mechanism whatsoever.
  • No Status Effects: The sniffer neither inflicts nor is immune to any particular status effects. It can be poisoned, withered, and otherwise debuffed like any standard mob.
  • Healing: Feeding a sniffer a torchflower seed restores 2 HP (1 heart).

Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth

  • Food: Torchflower seeds are the only item sniffers eat. Feeding one to a sniffer heals it for 2 HP (1 heart) and is also used for breeding.
  • Taming: Sniffers cannot be tamed. You cannot ride them, leash them to a fence post with a lead (though leads do work to move them around), or equip them with saddles, armor, or chests. They are strictly “look but don’t ride” pets.
  • Breeding: Feed torchflower seeds to two adult sniffers to enter love mode. Instead of spawning a baby mob directly, the parents drop a sniffer egg as an item. Pick it up and place it to hatch a new snifflet. There is a 5-minute breeding cooldown between attempts.
  • Breeding XP: Successfully breeding two sniffers awards 1–7 XP.
  • Growth: Snifflets take 48,000 game ticks (40 real-time minutes, or two full in-game days) to grow into adults. That is twice as long as most baby mobs. Feeding torchflower seeds to a snifflet reduces remaining growth time by 10% per feeding.
  • Egg Hatching: Sniffer eggs placed on any solid block take approximately 20 minutes to hatch. Placing the egg on a moss block cuts that time in half — roughly 10 minutes. The egg visibly cracks twice before the snifflet emerges.
  • Leads: Sniffers can be attached to leads, which is essentially the only way to reliably control their movement since they wander constantly.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Does not spawn naturally. Must be hatched from a sniffer egg or summoned via commands.
Egg Source Brushing suspicious sand in warm ocean ruins (6.7% drop chance per block), or breeding two adult sniffers with torchflower seeds.
Biomes Warm ocean ruins generate in warm ocean biomes. The sniffer itself can exist in any Overworld biome once hatched.
Y-Level Range Warm ocean ruins typically generate between Y 40–63 (ocean floor). Eggs can be placed and hatched at any Y level.
Light Level No light level requirement. The egg hatches regardless of lighting.
Required Block Egg can be placed on any solid block. Moss block halves hatching time (10 minutes vs. 20 minutes).
Group Size N/A — one snifflet per egg.
Edition Differences Spawning mechanics are identical across Java and Bedrock editions. Both require the egg-hatching process.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • No Predators/Prey Relationships: The sniffer does not actively interact with other mobs. It ignores everything and everything ignores it — with a few notable exceptions.
  • Hostile Mob Vulnerability: Wardens can kill a sniffer in a single melee hit. The Wither attacks sniffers on sight like it does all non-undead mobs. Standard hostile mobs like zombies and skeletons do not specifically target sniffers.
  • No Village or Golem Interactions: Iron golems do not protect sniffers, and sniffers have no relationship with villagers or village mechanics.
  • Water: Sniffers avoid water and cannot dig while submerged. They are not immune to drowning — despite hatching from eggs found at the bottom of the ocean, which is a level of irony only Minecraft could deliver.
  • Boats & Minecarts: Baby sniffers can enter boats. In Java Edition, baby sniffers specifically cannot be picked up by boats. If a snifflet enters a boat and grows into an adult while inside, you end up with a comically oversized sniffer stuck in a tiny boat. Sniffers in boats or minecarts cannot dig.
  • Fire & Lava: Sniffers have no fire resistance and will burn like any other passive mob. Keep your investment away from open flames.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Experience Orbs 1–3 Guaranteed Only drops when killed by a player or tamed wolf. Snifflets drop 0 XP.
Torchflower Seed 1 Per dig Not a death drop — obtained from the sniffer’s digging behavior. Equal chance of being a torchflower seed or pitcher pod per dig.
Pitcher Pod 1 Per dig Not a death drop — obtained from the sniffer’s digging behavior. Equal chance of being a pitcher pod or torchflower seed per dig.
Sniffer Egg 1 Per breeding Dropped as an item when two adult sniffers breed. Not a death drop.

The sniffer drops absolutely nothing when killed besides XP. No items, no materials, no “sniffer hide” or “sniffer beak.” Killing a sniffer is one of the least rewarding things you can do in this game. Breed them, farm their seeds, keep them alive. That is the entire value proposition.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Ancient Seed Farming: The sniffer’s sole practical purpose is digging up torchflower seeds and pitcher pods. These grow into torchflowers and pitcher plants — decorative items exclusive to this mechanic. Torchflower seeds double as the sniffer’s breeding food.
  • Farm Design Basics: Build a fenced enclosure at least 6×6 blocks in size with a floor made entirely of diggable blocks (dirt, grass, podzol, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, moss, mud, or muddy mangrove roots). Place two or more adult sniffers inside. Use hoppers or item collection systems beneath or around the area to pick up dropped seeds automatically.
  • Optimizing Dig Space: Because the sniffer remembers its last 20 dig locations, larger pens give it more fresh ground to work with before locations need to cycle out. An area significantly larger than 6×6 is recommended for continuous production.
  • Expected Rates: With an 8-minute cooldown between digs and some randomness in when the sniffer decides to start sniffing, expect roughly one seed every 8–12 minutes per sniffer. Adding more sniffers scales output linearly, so a pen with four or five sniffers keeps seeds coming at a reasonable pace.
  • Self-Sustaining Farms: Since torchflower seeds are both the breeding material and one of the dig outputs, you can build a self-sustaining loop: sniffers dig seeds → you use some seeds to breed more sniffers → more sniffers dig more seeds. The only bottleneck is getting your first two sniffers established.
  • Edition Caveats: The core farming mechanics are identical between Java and Bedrock. The diggable block tag (minecraft:sniffer_diggable_block) is only moddable via data packs in Java Edition.

Commands & NBT

Here are some common commands for working with sniffers:

/summon minecraft:sniffer ~ ~ ~

Summons an adult sniffer at your current location. Simple and effective.

/summon minecraft:sniffer ~ ~ ~ {Age:-48000}

Summons a snifflet (baby sniffer) that will take the full 40 minutes to grow up, same as a naturally hatched one.

/summon minecraft:sniffer ~ ~ ~ {CustomName:'"Truffles"'}

Summons a sniffer with a custom name tag. Because obviously you are going to name it.

/summon minecraft:sniffer ~ ~ ~ {Health:100f}

Summons a sniffer with boosted health — useful for testing or just keeping your prehistoric pal alive longer.

Bedrock Edition syntax:

/summon minecraft:sniffer ~ ~ ~
/summon minecraft:sniffer ~ ~ ~ minecraft:entity_born
/summon minecraft:sniffer ~ ~ ~ minecraft:ageable_grow_up

The minecraft:entity_born spawn event creates a snifflet. The minecraft:ageable_grow_up event forces an immediate growth to adult.

Notable NBT keys (Java Edition):

  • Age — Integer. Negative values indicate a baby. Set to -48000 for a freshly hatched snifflet. Counts up toward 0, at which point it becomes an adult.
  • InLove — Integer. Ticks remaining in love mode after being fed torchflower seeds.
  • ForcedAge — Integer. Ticks added to Age when fed food as a baby, accelerating growth.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Type Tags: The sniffer belongs to the following entity type tags: minecraft:fall_damage_immune (no — sniffers take fall damage), and standard passive mob tags. It is not part of any raider, undead, or arthropod tag.
  • Block Tag: minecraft:sniffer_diggable_block — this is the key tag for data pack creators. It defines which blocks a sniffer can dig into. By default, it includes dirt, grass block, podzol, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, moss block, mud, and muddy mangrove roots. Adding blocks to this tag expands where sniffers can dig.
  • Loot Table: minecraft:entities/sniffer — defines what the sniffer drops on death. By default, nothing besides XP.
  • Relevant Gamerules: doMobLoot affects XP drops. mobGriefing does not affect sniffer digging — the dig animation is cosmetic and does not actually break or change the block.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Difficulty Scaling: Since the sniffer is fully passive and never deals damage, difficulty level has no effect on its behavior. Its health remains 14 HP on Easy, Normal, and Hard alike.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Digging Block Tag: In Java Edition, the diggable blocks list can be modified through data packs using the minecraft:sniffer_diggable_block tag. Bedrock Edition does not support this customization.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Boat Interactions: In Java Edition, baby sniffers cannot be picked up by boats. Bedrock Edition allows baby sniffers to enter boats normally.
  • Java vs. Bedrock — Sound Category: In Java Edition, the sniffer uses the “Friendly Creatures” sound category. Sound category organization differs in Bedrock Edition.
  • Spawn Egg Availability: Both editions include a sniffer spawn egg in Creative mode. Bedrock Edition also supports spawn events (minecraft:entity_born, minecraft:ageable_grow_up) for command-based spawning.

Sounds & Audio

  • Ambient (Idle): entity.sniffer.idle — a soft, low breathing/snuffling sound.
  • Sniffing: entity.sniffer.scenting — a more pronounced sniffing sound when the sniffer begins searching for seeds.
  • Digging: entity.sniffer.digging — block-breaking-style sounds while the sniffer digs into the ground. The subtitle displays as “Block breaking” which is technically correct but slightly confusing (this is intentional per Mojang — MC-260213).
  • Digging Complete: entity.sniffer.digging_stop — the sound when digging finishes and the seed drops.
  • Happy: entity.sniffer.happy — a cheerful sound played when the sniffer shakes its head after a successful dig.
  • Eating: entity.sniffer.eat — played when fed a torchflower seed.
  • Hurt: entity.sniffer.hurt
  • Death: entity.sniffer.death
  • Step: entity.sniffer.step — a heavy, thumping footstep befitting its size.
  • Egg Cracking: block.sniffer_egg.crack — plays when the sniffer egg reaches each cracking stage.
  • Egg Hatching: block.sniffer_egg.hatch — the final hatch sound when the snifflet emerges.
  • Sound Category (Java): Friendly Creatures.

History & Major Changes

  • Minecraft Live 2022: The sniffer was announced as one of three candidates in the Mob Vote alongside the tuff golem and the rascal. It won with approximately 55% of the vote — the largest margin in Mob Vote history at the time.
  • Java 23w07a (February 2023): The sniffer was added to Java Edition as an experimental feature. Initial implementation included basic wandering, sniffing, digging, and seed-dropping behaviors.
  • Java 1.20 / Bedrock 1.20.0 (June 2023): Full release as part of the Trails & Tales update. The sniffer, sniffer egg, torchflower, and pitcher plant were all added as permanent features on both editions simultaneously.
  • Post-1.20 Patches: Various bug fixes related to sniffing AI, digging sound subtitles, and egg placement behavior. No major mechanical changes since the initial full release.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Digging Sound Subtitle: When a sniffer digs, the subtitle reads “Block breaking” instead of something sniffer-specific. Mojang confirmed this is working as intended (MC-260213), but it can confuse players who see the subtitle and start looking around for someone mining nearby.
  • Eating Sound with Last Seed: If you feed a sniffer the last torchflower seed in a stack, the eating sound may not play correctly (MC-260219). A minor audio bug, but noticeable if you are paying attention.
  • Size vs. Health Mismatch: Despite being one of the largest mobs in the game — visually comparable to a ravager — the sniffer only has 14 HP. That is the same as a cow. A Warden one-shots it. This is widely considered undertuned by the community, but there have been no changes to date.
  • Pathfinding on Edges: Due to the sniffer’s large hitbox, its pathfinding can struggle on narrow one-block-wide paths. The developers have acknowledged this was a significant challenge during development.
  • Snifflet Independence: Unlike most baby mobs, snifflets do not follow their parents. Whether this is a deliberate design choice or an overlooked behavior is unclear, but it means newborn snifflets can wander off and get themselves killed if you are not paying attention.

Advancements / Achievements

  • “Little Sniffs” (Java — Advancement): Awarded when the player feeds a snifflet. This is part of the Husbandry advancement tree.
  • “Planting the Past” (Java — Advancement): Awarded when the player plants a torchflower seed or pitcher pod obtained from a sniffer. Also in the Husbandry tree.
  • “Little Sniffs” (Bedrock — Achievement): Earned by feeding a snifflet. Grants 20 Gamerscore.
  • “The Two Birds” (Java — Advancement): The “Two by Two” advancement requires breeding all breedable mob pairs, which includes sniffers. You will need to breed two sniffers to complete it.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Mob Vote Domination: The sniffer received the highest vote share in Mob Vote history at the time — roughly 55%, representing nearly two million votes. Players wanted their prehistoric seed-sniffing dinosaur and they were not subtle about it.
  • Origin Story: The sniffer was originally a doodle made by Mojang artist Nekofresa in their kitchen. It was their first mob ever designed for Minecraft.
  • Walking Animation Inspiration: The sniffer’s six-legged walk cycle was inspired by the leg movement of centipedes. Once you know this, you cannot unsee it.
  • Development Placeholder: During the prototype phase, Mojang used beds as placeholder items for the seeds the sniffer digs up. Imagine a giant dinosaur splooting on the ground and pulling a bed out of the dirt.
  • Plant Design Inspiration: The torchflower is based on the kniphofia genus (commonly called “torch lilies”), and pitcher pods are loosely inspired by real pitcher plants with an orchid-like aesthetic twist.
  • Nickname: Mojang developer Cory Scheviak personally calls sniffers “snuffleupaguses,” which is both endearing and entirely accurate.
  • Trails & Tales Event Items: Minecraft’s Trails & Tales celebration event featured sniffer-themed items including a Sniffer Hat, Sniffer Balloon, and Sniffer Snout Popsicle.
  • Extinct Lore: The reason sniffers do not spawn naturally is that they are canonically extinct in the Minecraft world. The player is essentially performing paleontological resurrection by hatching them from preserved eggs found in ancient ruins.
