The fox is one of those mobs that looks absolutely adorable right up until it steals your stuff and sprints into the woods like a furry little criminal. Foxes are nocturnal neutral mobs that spawn in taiga biomes and their variants, and they come in two flavors — the classic orange-red fox and the snowy white arctic fox. They sleep during the day, hunt chickens at night, and will pick up literally anything you drop on the ground near them, including your best sword.

What makes foxes genuinely unique is their trust mechanic. You cannot tame a fox the way you tame a wolf or a cat. Instead, you breed two wild foxes with sweet berries or glow berries, and the baby fox that results will trust you. That baby will still follow its parents around like a lost toddler, so you need to leash it and walk it away from mom and dad before it becomes your loyal companion. Once it trusts you, it will attack anything that hurts you — which sounds great until you realize it still runs away from wolves and polar bears, its two natural predators.

The fox is also one of the only mobs that can use items it picks up. If a fox grabs a sword off the ground, it deals that sword’s damage when it attacks. If it picks up a totem of undying and takes fatal damage, the totem activates and the fox lives. That is not a glitch — that is a feature that started as a glitch and was so entertaining that Mojang kept it in the game. The fox holds items in its “main hand,” which just happens to be its mouth. Minecraft logic at its finest.

Appearance

Foxes have a compact, low-to-the-ground body with a large head, pointed ears, and a bushy tail — all rendered in the signature Minecraft blocky style. The red fox variant has an orange-brown body with a white underbelly, white-tipped tail, black legs, and black-tipped ears. The snow fox (arctic fox) is almost entirely white with a lighter gray on its paws and ears. Both variants have a distinctive wide face with those slightly goofy sideways-looking eyes that make them look permanently surprised.

Baby foxes are noticeably smaller — roughly half the size of an adult — with the same proportions scaled down. Their hitbox shrinks accordingly, which means they can fit through smaller gaps than adults.

When a fox is holding an item, it visually appears in the fox’s mouth. When sleeping, the fox curls up and its head slowly bobs up and down. Before a pounce attack, the fox crouches down low and tilts its head toward the ground, making its body appear shorter. In Bedrock Edition, foxes also visibly shake side to side before pouncing and wave their legs while airborne.

Behavior & AI

  • Nocturnal Schedule: Foxes are active at night and sleep during the day. When daytime arrives (and it is not a thunderstorm), foxes seek out a spot with a sky light level of 14 or less and fall asleep. Block light does not affect this — only sky light matters. If they cannot find shade, they sit down periodically instead.
  • Flee Behavior: Wild foxes flee from players and wolves within approximately 12 blocks. If you sneak toward a fox, it will not run until you reach an adjacent block. This is the key to getting close enough to breed them.
  • Item Pickup: Foxes pick up any dropped item on the ground near them. They prefer food items over non-food items and will swap out a non-food item for food if given the chance. After 30 seconds, a fox eats any food item it is holding (except cake) and receives all status effects from that food — including teleportation from chorus fruit or absorption from enchanted golden apples.
  • Sweet Berry Harvesting: If a stage 3 or 4 sweet berry bush is within 16 blocks, a fox sprints toward it, eats the berries, and drops whatever it was holding. Foxes take no damage and no speed reduction from sweet berry bushes — they are the only mob immune to sweet berry thorns.
  • Prey Targeting: Red foxes prefer to attack chickens, rabbits, and baby turtles on land. Snow foxes prefer to attack cod, salmon, and tropical fish in water. Both variants attack all of these prey types, but they have preferences based on their biome of origin.
  • Pounce Attack: Foxes pounce by crouching low, then leaping up to 2 blocks into the air. This jump is high enough to clear fences and walls. If the target moves during the windup, the pounce misses. In snowy biomes, a fox that pounces into a snow layer gets temporarily stuck face-first, shakes around, then pops back out.
  • Village Wandering: At night, foxes sometimes wander toward villages. Snow foxes prefer snow villages, and red foxes prefer taiga or other village types.
  • Sleeping Quirks: Foxes can drop and pick up items while sleeping. They do not sleep if an armor stand is within 12 blocks. They wake up when a player or mob approaches, or when the sky light at their position reaches 15 or higher. Trusting foxes can fall asleep even while leashed.
  • Nether Behavior: Foxes that have not been bred by the player always sit while in the Nether, even while leashed. They refuse to cooperate in the underworld.
  • Persistence/Despawn: Foxes follow standard passive mob despawning rules. Naturally spawned foxes can despawn if far from players, but any fox that has been interacted with (bred, leashed, named) persists.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Pounce Attack: The fox crouches, tilts its head down, then leaps up to 2 blocks high toward its target. Deals 2 damage (1 heart) base. In Bedrock Edition, the fox shakes side to side before jumping and waves its legs in midair.
  • Weapon Usage: If a fox holds a weapon (sword, axe, etc.), it applies that weapon’s full damage and enchantments when attacking. A fox holding a diamond sword hits for diamond sword damage. A fox holding a Fire Aspect sword sets targets on fire. This works because the item in the fox’s mouth is technically in its “main hand” equipment slot.
  • Enchantment Application: Looting on a held weapon increases drops from the fox’s kills. Fire Aspect sets targets ablaze. In Bedrock Edition, a fox wielding a Fire Aspect sword on a campfire or soul campfire can ignite it.
  • Totem of Undying: If a fox is holding a totem of undying and takes lethal damage, the totem activates exactly as it would for a player — the fox is resurrected, the totem is consumed, and the fox gains Regeneration, Absorption, and Fire Resistance.
  • Food Consumption Effects: Foxes receive all effects from food they eat. An enchanted golden apple gives them Absorption and Regeneration. Chorus fruit teleports them. A spider eye poisons them. Pufferfish give them Nausea, Hunger, and Poison.
  • Sweet Berry Bush Immunity: Foxes take zero damage and zero speed penalty from sweet berry bushes. No other mob in the game has this immunity.
  • Trusting Fox Combat: A fox that trusts a player attacks zombies, drowned, husks, zombified piglins, skeletons, wither skeletons, strays, phantoms, silverfish, endermites, spiders, cave spiders, vexes, vindicators, evokers, pillagers, ravagers, blazes, endermen, goats, and pandas when those mobs attack the trusted player. They do not attack mobs the player attacks proactively — they only retaliate.
  • Limitations: Trusting foxes still flee from wolves and polar bears even while defending you, unless those predators attack the trusted player first. They also do not attack zombie villagers, despite them being a zombie variant.

Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth

  • Breeding Food: Sweet berries or glow berries. Hold the berries and sneak up to two adult foxes to feed them. This triggers love mode and produces a baby fox (kit).
  • Trust Mechanic (Not Taming): You cannot tame a fox in the traditional sense. Baby foxes born from player-bred parents trust the player who bred them. Trusting means the fox does not flee from that player and will attack mobs that harm them. However, the baby will follow nearby adult foxes, so you need to attach a lead and walk it away from its parents to keep it.
  • Baby Growth: Baby foxes take 20 minutes (one full Minecraft day) to grow into adults. This can be accelerated by feeding them sweet berries or glow berries — each berry reduces the remaining growth time by 10%.
  • Cross-Breeding Variants: Breeding a red fox with a snow fox gives the baby a 50/50 chance of being either variant. The baby still trusts the player regardless of color.
  • Leash Behavior: Foxes can be leashed. They will still try to sprint toward prey while leashed, but they cannot break the lead. Trusting foxes can sleep while leashed. Leading is the primary method of relocating a baby fox away from its parents.
  • Spawn Egg Trust: Using a spawn egg on an adult fox produces a baby that trusts the player, behaving the same as a player-bred kit.

Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms

Red Fox

  • Appearance: Orange-brown body, white underbelly and tail tip, black legs and ear tips.
  • Spawn Biomes: Taiga, Old Growth Taiga (Pine and Spruce), Grove.
  • Prey Preference: Prefers land-dwelling prey — chickens, rabbits, and baby turtles — over fish.
  • Village Preference: Wanders toward taiga villages and non-snowy villages at night.

Snow Fox (Arctic Fox)

  • Appearance: Almost entirely white with subtle gray shading on paws and ears.
  • Spawn Biomes: Snowy Taiga, Grove (snowy variants).
  • Prey Preference: Prefers aquatic prey — cod, salmon, and tropical fish — over land mobs.
  • Village Preference: Wanders toward snow villages at night.
  • Snow Pounce: When a snow fox pounces into a snow layer, it gets temporarily stuck face-first in the snow, emits particles while shaking, and then pops back out. This is purely cosmetic and does not deal damage to the fox.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Overworld surface
Biomes Taiga, Old Growth Pine Taiga, Old Growth Spruce Taiga, Snowy Taiga, Grove
Y-Level Range Surface level (standard animal spawn height, typically Y 63+)
Light Level Any light level (spawns more commonly at night due to nocturnal nature)
Required Block Grass Block, Coarse Dirt, Podzol, Snow Block, or Top Snow
Group Size Java: 2–4
Bedrock: 2–4
Baby Chance 5% of spawned foxes are babies
Item in Mouth 20% chance to spawn holding one of: Emerald, Rabbit’s Foot, Rabbit Hide, Egg, Wheat, Leather, or Feather
Edition Differences Foxes spawning in a snowy biome are always the snow (arctic) variant. Foxes can also spawn in taiga villages if the village is within a valid biome. Spawning behavior is functionally identical across both editions.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Wolves (Predator): Wild wolves are aggressive toward foxes within 18 blocks (Java) or 16 blocks (Bedrock). Wolves will chase and attack foxes on sight. Foxes do not fight back against wolves — they just run. Even trusting foxes flee from wolves unless the wolf attacks the trusted player.
  • Polar Bears (Predator): In Java Edition, adult polar bears sneak toward foxes to attack them. Baby polar bears also attempt to attack foxes within 16 blocks, or when their adult attacks one. In Bedrock Edition, adult polar bears attack foxes within 16 blocks. Foxes flee from polar bears and do not retaliate.
  • Chickens, Rabbits, Baby Turtles (Prey): Foxes actively hunt and kill these mobs. Red foxes prioritize them over fish. A fox will wake from sleep if a chicken, rabbit, or fish is nearby.
  • Fish (Prey): Foxes swim to attack cod, salmon, and tropical fish in water. Snow foxes prioritize aquatic prey over land mobs.
  • Sweet Berry Bushes: Foxes are completely immune to sweet berry bush damage and slowdown. They will actively seek out and harvest ripe berry bushes within 16 blocks.
  • Armor Stands: Foxes refuse to sleep if an armor stand is within 12 blocks. No one knows why foxes are terrified of mannequins, but here we are.
  • Boats and Minecarts: Foxes can be placed in boats and minecarts. They sit while inside. This is one method of transporting foxes without a lead.
  • Leads: Foxes can be leashed. They attempt to run toward prey while leashed but cannot break the lead.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Held Item 1 100% Foxes always drop whatever item they are currently holding in their mouth, whether naturally spawned with it or picked up from the ground. Does not drop food items already consumed.
Experience 1–2 (Java) / 1–3 (Bedrock) Guaranteed (adults only) Only dropped when an adult fox is killed by a player or tamed wolf. Baby foxes drop no experience. Breeding foxes drops 1–7 XP.

Foxes have no unique item drops of their own. They drop no meat, no fur, nothing. The only thing you get is whatever they were carrying and a small handful of experience. If you are killing foxes for loot, you are doing it wrong — their real value is alive, not dead.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Trusting Fox as Combat Companion: A trusting fox retaliates against a wide range of hostile mobs that attack you, including zombies, skeletons, spiders, endermen, pillagers, and more. It is not as reliable as a tamed wolf because it still runs from its own predators, but it has the advantage of using held weapons. Hand a trusting fox a diamond sword and watch it become a tiny, furry blender.
  • Sweet Berry Farming: Foxes naturally harvest sweet berry bushes. You can set up a pen with sweet berry bushes and foxes inside, then collect berries the foxes drop as they eat. This is not the fastest farm design, but it is hands-free and oddly satisfying to watch.
  • Item Recovery: You can exploit the fox’s item-swapping behavior. If a fox is holding a valuable item (like the emerald it spawned with), drop a food item near it. The fox drops the non-food item to pick up the food. Free emerald, no killing required.
  • Totem of Undying Holder: If you have spare totems, giving one to a trusting fox effectively gives it an extra life. It also makes for a hilarious moment when a creeper explodes and the fox just shrugs it off.
  • Chicken Farm Integration: Foxes will reliably kill chickens, so some players use them in automated chicken farms where foxes do the killing. The foxes deal damage, chickens drop items, and hoppers collect the loot. Not the most common design, but it works.
  • No Dedicated Fox Farm: There is no reason to build a dedicated fox XP farm. They drop minimal experience, have no unique loot, and are far less efficient than standard mob farms for any farming purpose.

Commands & NBT

Common summon commands for foxes:

/summon minecraft:fox ~ ~ ~

Summon a red fox at your location.

/summon minecraft:fox ~ ~ ~ {Type:"snow"}

Summon a snow (arctic) fox.

/summon minecraft:fox ~ ~ ~ {Type:"red",Age:-24000}

Summon a baby red fox. The negative Age value sets the growth timer — -24000 ticks is a full 20 minutes.

/summon minecraft:fox ~ ~ ~ {HandItems:[{id:"minecraft:diamond_sword",count:1}],HandDropChances:[1.0f]}

Summon a fox holding a diamond sword with a 100% drop chance. A tiny, terrifying soldier.

/summon minecraft:fox ~ ~ ~ {Trusted:[I;0,0,0,0],Type:"red"}

Summon a fox with a trust entry. Replace the four integers with a player’s UUID (as four int values) to make the fox trust that player.

Notable NBT keys:

  • Type — String. Either "red" or "snow". Determines variant.
  • Trusted — List of int arrays. Each entry is a player UUID stored as four ints. The fox trusts these players. If more than two entries, only the first and last are used.
  • Sleeping — Byte (0/1). Whether the fox is currently sleeping.
  • Sitting — Byte (0/1). Whether the fox is sitting.
  • Crouching — Byte (0/1). Whether the fox is in its pre-pounce crouch.
  • HandItems — List of item compounds. Index 0 is the item in the fox’s mouth (main hand).
  • Age — Int. Negative values indicate a baby. -24000 = newborn, counts up to 0 (adult).

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • Entity Tags (Java): Foxes are included in the #minecraft:powder_snow_walkable_mobs tag, meaning they walk on powder snow without sinking. They are also part of general animal-related tags used in spawning and AI.
  • mobGriefing Gamerule: When mobGriefing is set to false, foxes do not pick up items from the ground. They also do not harvest sweet berry bushes. This is the simplest way to stop foxes from stealing your dropped items.
  • Loot Table Path (Java): minecraft:entities/fox — This loot table is essentially empty since foxes have no unique drops. The held item drop is handled by the equipment system, not the loot table.
  • Spawn Data: Fox spawn entries can be customized in biome data files under the creature spawn category for the relevant taiga biomes.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Wolf Aggro Range: Wolves are hostile toward foxes within 18 blocks in Java Edition but only 16 blocks in Bedrock Edition.
  • Polar Bear Behavior: In Java Edition, both adult and baby polar bears attack foxes. In Bedrock Edition, only adult polar bears attack foxes within 16 blocks.
  • XP Drops: Adult foxes drop 1–2 XP in Java and 1–3 XP in Bedrock when killed by a player or tamed wolf.
  • Pounce Animation: In Bedrock Edition, foxes shake side to side before pouncing and their legs wave in midair. Java Edition foxes have a simpler pounce animation.
  • Fire Aspect Campfire Interaction: In Bedrock Edition, a fox wielding a Fire Aspect sword can ignite campfires and soul campfires when attacking a mob standing on one. This does not occur in Java Edition.
  • Screeching Behavior: In Java Edition, foxes screech at night unless a trusted player is nearby. Bedrock Edition foxes also screech at night, but specific range conditions may differ slightly.
  • Difficulty Scaling: Fox base damage does not scale with difficulty. They always deal 2 damage (1 heart) regardless of Easy, Normal, or Hard. Damage only increases from held weapons.

Sounds & Audio

  • entity.fox.ambient — Standard idle sounds during the daytime. Soft, quiet chirps.
  • entity.fox.sleep — Quiet snoring or breathing sounds while sleeping.
  • entity.fox.screech — The loud nighttime screech. If you have heard a horrifying screaming noise in a taiga biome at 2 AM and had no idea what it was, this is the answer. Foxes screech at night unless a trusted player is nearby.
  • entity.fox.hurt — Sharp yelp when taking damage.
  • entity.fox.death — Final yelp on death.
  • entity.fox.aggro — Aggressive sound when targeting prey or defending a trusted player.
  • entity.fox.bite — Sound played during the pounce attack contact.
  • entity.fox.eat — Eating sound when consuming a food item from its mouth.
  • entity.fox.spit — Sound when dropping a held item.
  • entity.fox.sniff — Sniffing sound while searching for items or food.
  • entity.fox.teleport — Played when a fox teleports after eating chorus fruit.

Fun fact: fox sounds in Minecraft are heavily edited and combined cat and dog audio samples. The first and third screech sounds are actually the same sound reversed at different pitches.

History & Major Changes

  • 19w07a (Java): Foxes added to the game. Originally had 20 health points (10 hearts).
  • 19w08a (Java): Foxes now pick up items and can eat food they hold. Breeding with sweet berries implemented.
  • 19w14a (Java): Baby foxes added via breeding.
  • 1.14 Pre-Release 4 (Java): Fox health reduced from 20 to 10 (5 hearts).
  • 1.14 (Java): Official release of foxes in the Village & Pillage update.
  • 1.13.0 (Bedrock): Foxes added to Bedrock Edition.
  • 1.15 (Java): Foxes now spawn in grove biomes (added later with Caves & Cliffs Part 2 biome rework).
  • 1.17 (Java): Powder snow interaction added — foxes can walk on powder snow without sinking.
  • 1.19.4 (Java): Glow berries added as a valid breeding food alongside sweet berries.

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • MC-159882 — Incorrect Hitbox: The fox hitbox does not perfectly match the model. It is slightly too small in depth and slightly too wide. The eye-level indicator is misplaced when the fox is sitting. This has been a known issue since 1.14.4 and persists through current versions.
  • Baby Fox Drowning: Baby foxes are small enough that when swimming, their head goes below water level, causing them to take drowning damage. This is especially noticeable when baby foxes try to attack fish — they can drown in the attempt.
  • Broken Early Model: During initial development, foxes rendered as flat boxes due to a model error. Developer Cory Scheviak has confirmed this was one of the early visual bugs encountered while building the mob.
  • Bedrock Baby Collision: In Bedrock Edition, when a baby fox holds an item, the collision box briefly uses the adult size, making the item appear to float in the air above the baby.
  • Armor Stand Insomnia: Foxes refuse to sleep within 12 blocks of an armor stand. This is intentional behavior, not a bug, but it surprises players frequently. If your foxes will not sleep, check for nearby armor stands.

Advancements / Achievements

  • “The Parrots and the Bats” (Java): Breeding two foxes with sweet berries or glow berries grants this advancement, which requires breeding any two animals.
  • “Two by Two” (Java): Breeding foxes counts toward this advancement, which requires breeding every type of animal. Foxes are one of the required pairs.
  • “Best Friends Forever” (Bedrock): Taming any animal-like mob can work toward this achievement. Breeding foxes to create a trusting kit counts.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Minecon Earth 2018 Vote: Foxes were added to Minecraft because the taiga biome won the community biome vote at Minecon Earth 2018. Sweet berry bushes and campfires were also part of the taiga update package. If a different biome had won, foxes might not exist in the game at all.
  • Weapon in Mouth — Accidental Feature: The fox’s ability to use held weapons started as an unintended side effect of the equipment system. Since the item in the fox’s mouth is coded as its main hand, the game applies weapon damage and enchantments automatically. Mojang found it entertaining and kept it as a feature.
  • Splash Screen Easter Egg: The splash screen text “In case it isn’t obvious, foxes aren’t players” was added in response to bug report MC-166292, which presumably involved some confusion about fox behavior.
  • Tamed Fox Experiment: The trust mechanic loosely mirrors the real-world Soviet domesticated fox experiment led by Dmitry Belyayev, where selective breeding over generations produced foxes that were friendly toward humans.
  • Sound Design: All fox sounds in Minecraft were created by combining and heavily editing real cat and dog audio recordings. The screech sounds are particularly notorious among players who hear them for the first time at night in a taiga biome and assume something terrible is happening.
  • Minecraft Dungeons: Foxes appear in Minecraft Dungeons as pet companions — both the standard fox and arctic fox variants are available as DLC or seasonal adventure pets.
  • Cross-Eyed Appearance: When viewed from the front, foxes appear wall-eyed (eyes looking in slightly different directions). From the side, they look normal. This is a quirk of the 3D model and texture mapping.
