Sulfur Cube

The Sulfur Cube is the slime’s pale yellow cousin that decided violence was not the answer. It lives deep in sulfur caves, hops around with the vacant stare of someone who walked into a room and forgot why, and it never attacks you. Then you hand it a block, and everything changes.

Feed a large sulfur cube a full block and it swallows it whole. The block sits visibly inside its body, the cube stops moving, and it turns into a physics toy. Depending on what you fed it, you now own a soccer ball, a hockey puck, a curling stone, a red-hot hazard, or, if you handed it TNT, a very bad idea you can kick.

The sulfur cube arrived with the Chaos Cubed game drop on June 16, 2026 (Java Edition 26.2 and Bedrock Edition 26.30). Below is everything you need: all twelve block archetypes, where to find sulfur cubes, how to carry them home, and the mechanics that make a harmless blob the best minigame ball in the game.

Overview / Quick Stats

Attribute Details
Name Sulfur Cube
Namespaced Entity ID minecraft:sulfur_cube
Alignment Passive. It never attacks. However, it spawns in the Monster category, so it counts toward the hostile mob cap and despawns when no player is nearby.
Dimensions/Hitbox Large: 0.98 blocks wide × 0.98 blocks tall
Small: 0.49 blocks wide × 0.49 blocks tall
Health Large: 8 HP (4 hearts)
Small: 4 HP (2 hearts)
Armor No armor value listed. Its real defense is absorbing a block, which makes it immune to most damage types (see Abilities).
Base Damage No attacks of its own. Explosive archetype (TNT inside) max damage:
  • Easy: 22.5 (11.25 hearts)
  • Normal: 43 (21.5 hearts)
  • Hard: 64.5 (32.25 hearts)

Explosion damage drops off with distance. The Hot archetype (magma block inside) deals 1 HP (half a heart) every 10 ticks (0.5 seconds) on contact.

Movement Speed Large: 0.4 (movement speed attribute)
Small: 0.3 (movement speed attribute)
Once it absorbs a block, it stops moving on its own entirely.
Knockback Resistance Varies by archetype, from -2.0 (Bouncy and Sticky, where the negative value amplifies knockback) up to 0.8 (Slow Sliding).
Follow/Detection Range Large cubes follow players holding an absorbable block and move toward absorbable block items on the ground. Small cubes are tempted by slimeballs.
Experience Drop Large: 1–2
Small: 0
Spawn Location Sulfur Caves biome (Overworld, underground)
First Added Java: 26.2 (first appeared in 26.2-snapshot-1, April 7, 2026)
Bedrock: 26.30 (experimental in 26.20)
Full release in both editions on June 16, 2026, as part of Chaos Cubed.
Last Major Change Java 26.2 Snapshot 6 (May 5, 2026): added the Slow Bouncy and Hot archetypes and the “Uh Oh” advancement.

Appearance

  • Model: A cube with a translucent outer shell, built on the same body plan as the slime and magma cube. Whatever block it has absorbed floats in the middle of that shell, fully visible.
  • Color: A very pale yellow that is close to white. That makes it easy to spot against the saturated yellow sulfur and red cinnabar of its home cave.
  • Face: A simple face locked in a permanently blank, mildly confused expression. It looks like it is trying to remember a password.
  • Small vs. Large: Small sulfur cubes are exactly half the size (0.49 blocks) with the same look. They cannot hold blocks, so they are always empty.
  • Absorbed Blocks: The block inside renders exactly like it does when placed, including its material textures under Vibrant Visuals. A froglight inside a cube glows visually, but it does not actually light up the area.
  • Invisibility: Hit a filled cube with a splash potion of Invisibility and the cube vanishes, leaving what looks like a lone block bouncing around on its own.
  • Animations: Empty cubes use the classic squash-and-hop jump of slimes. Filled cubes sit still until struck, then tumble, slide, or bounce based on their archetype.

Behavior & AI

  • Idle Behavior: Empty cubes hop around aimlessly. In this state they take damage from everything, just like any other passive mob.
  • Targeting/Aggro: None. The only things it chases are blocks. Large cubes follow players holding an absorbable block and waddle toward absorbable block items lying on the ground.
  • Absorbing Blocks: A large cube absorbs a block when it touches a dropped block item, when you use a block on it, or when a dispenser fires a block into it. Picking up dropped blocks is disabled when mob_griefing is off, but hand-feeding still works.
  • Filled State: Once it holds a block, its AI shuts off. It stops hopping, stops following you, and only moves when something knocks it around.
  • Swapping Blocks: Feed a filled cube a different block and it swaps: the new block goes in and the old one pops out as an item.
  • Climbing: If an empty cube paths into a ladder or vines, it climbs. In Java Edition, a filled cube that gets launched into a climbable block can climb too.
  • Persistence/Despawn: It despawns like a hostile mob when no player is nearby. A name tag or a bucket stops that.
  • Water: Behavior in water depends on the absorbed block. Bouncy, Explosive, Hot, Light, and Regular cubes float. Every other archetype sinks like a brick, sometimes literally.
  • Fire & Lava: A block inside does not protect it from burning. Fire and lava still hurt it, and any fire damage instantly lights a TNT-filled cube.
  • Splitting: When a large cube dies, it splits into two small cubes. The one exception is when it dies from its own TNT explosion, in which case nothing is left. Small cubes do not split further. A named large cube passes its name to both small cubes.

Abilities, Attacks & Status Effects

  • Attacks: None. The sulfur cube cannot hurt you unless you load it with a magma block or TNT.
  • Damage Immunity (Filled): With a block inside, it ignores melee attacks, projectiles, falling blocks (anvils and stalactites included), explosions other than its own, fall damage (including landing on stalagmites), freezing, cactus, sweet berry bushes, magma blocks, and Hot cubes.
  • What Still Hurts It: Fire, lava, suffocation, damage-over-time effects, and entity cramming (Java only). The warden’s sonic boom also goes straight through that immunity.
  • Launching: Instead of taking damage, a filled cube gets launched. Launch power scales with the damage your attack would have dealt, so a diamond sword sends it much farther than a bare fist. Knockback and Punch add extra distance.
  • Launch Direction: The cube flies away from where you hit it, so aiming at its sides and edges lets you steer. Hitting a cube that is already airborne pops it higher, and this effect is stronger in Java Edition than normal airborne knockback.
  • Hot Contact Damage: A magma-filled cube deals 1 HP every 10 ticks (0.5 seconds) to anything touching it, just like standing on a magma block. Frost Walker boots make you immune. A Hot cube touching a TNT cube lights it.
  • Explosive Fuse: A TNT-filled cube lit by fire or redstone gets a 120-tick (6-second) fuse, two seconds longer than placed TNT. If another explosion sets it off, the fuse is a random 15–44 ticks (0.75–2.2 seconds).
  • Primed State: Once lit, a TNT cube cannot be damaged, bucketed, or sheared. There is no take-backs button. Mojang specifically confirmed you cannot extinguish it.
  • Ignition Sources: Flint and steel (by hand or dispenser), fire charges, fire, lava, campfires, magma blocks, flaming arrows, Fire Aspect weapons, nearby explosions (including firework explosions and other sulfur cubes), and redstone power. Fire Resistance does not stop ignition.
  • Status Effects Inflicted: None directly. The Nausea you get in sulfur caves comes from potent sulfur gas in the pools, not from the cubes.

Food, Taming, Breeding & Growth

  • Food: Small sulfur cubes eat slimeballs. Holding one tempts them to follow you, and feeding it cuts down their remaining growth time.
  • Growth: A small cube grows into a large one after 20 minutes on its own. Slimeballs speed that up.
  • Staying Small: Feed a small cube a golden dandelion and it stops growing permanently. Useful if you want a tiny desk pet, less useful if you wanted a soccer ball.
  • Breeding: Not possible. New sulfur cubes only come from natural spawns or from large cubes splitting on death.
  • Taming: Not tameable. It has no owner and no loyalty, only an appetite for blocks.
  • Bucket: Use an empty bucket on a large cube to get a Bucket of Sulfur Cube. It keeps its absorbed block, and the tooltip shows which block is inside. Small cubes cannot be bucketed.
  • Bucket Naming: In Java Edition, a named cube’s bucket takes just the cube’s name. In Bedrock Edition, it becomes “Bucket of [name]”.
  • Bucket Persistence: A cube placed from a bucket does not count toward the mob cap and never despawns. If it later dies and splits, those small cubes can despawn.
  • Leash: You can put a lead on a sulfur cube only while it holds a block.
  • Shears: Shearing a filled cube ejects the block and switches its AI back on. Dispensers loaded with shears work too.

Variants, Jockeys & Special Forms

The sulfur cube has no color variants and no jockeys. Its “variants” are the twelve archetypes set by the block it absorbs. Each one changes knockback resistance, bounciness, ground friction, air drag, and launch power. Blocks not on these lists, including slabs, stairs, glass, and sand, cannot be absorbed at all.

Regular (Soccer Ball)

  • Blocks: Dirt, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, grass block, podzol, mud, packed mud, muddy mangrove roots, clay, bone block, block of coal, and all concrete powder.
  • Feel: Medium speed, medium bounce, medium friction, low air drag. The default ball.
  • Values: Knockback resistance -1.0, bounciness 0.5, friction 0.3, air drag 0.1.
  • Water: Floats.

Bouncy (Rubber Ball)

  • Blocks: Planks, logs, stripped logs, wood, stripped wood, bamboo mosaic, block of bamboo, and block of stripped bamboo.
  • Feel: Fast, very bouncy, low air drag. Hit it hard indoors and it will ricochet around the room like it pays rent there.
  • Values: Knockback resistance -2.0, bounciness 0.9, friction 0.3, air drag 0.01.
  • Water: Floats.

Fast Flat (Golf Ball)

  • Blocks: Coral blocks (live and dead), sponge, wet sponge, dried kelp block, moss block, pale moss block, block of resin, resin bricks, chiseled resin bricks, pumpkin, carved pumpkin, jack o’lantern, melon, hay bale, and froglights.
  • Feel: Fast, low bounce, low air drag. It has the strongest horizontal launch of any archetype, which is exactly what you want for golf.
  • Values: Knockback resistance -1.0, bounciness 0.5, friction 0.2, air drag 0.01, horizontal launch power 0.9125.
  • Water: Sinks.

Fast Sliding (Hockey Puck)

  • Blocks: Blue ice, packed ice, and snow block.
  • Feel: Fast, zero bounce, almost no friction. It skates along the ground instead of hopping.
  • Values: Knockback resistance 0.5, bounciness 0.1, friction 0.05, air drag 0.01.
  • Water: Sinks.

Slow Sliding (Curling Stone)

  • Blocks: Brown and red mushroom blocks, mushroom stem, mycelium, nether wart block, warped wart block, and shroomlight.
  • Feel: Slow, no bounce, low friction. It glides a short, controlled distance, which makes it the precision option.
  • Values: Knockback resistance 0.8 (the highest of any archetype), bounciness 0.1, friction 0.05, air drag 0.01.
  • Water: Sinks.

Light (Beach Ball)

  • Blocks: Wool of any color.
  • Feel: Slow and floaty with maximum bounce and very high air drag. It hangs in the air long enough for everyone to get a hit in.
  • Values: Knockback resistance -1.0, bounciness 1.0, friction 0.3, air drag 1.8.
  • Water: Floats.

Slow Bouncy

  • Blocks: Most stone-type blocks, including stone, cobblestone, deepslate variants, andesite, diorite, granite, tuff, calcite, sandstone variants, bricks, nether bricks, blackstone variants, quartz blocks, prismarine, purpur, end stone, obsidian, crying obsidian, sulfur and cinnabar blocks, concrete, terracotta (plain, stained, and glazed), observers, redstone lamps, sea lanterns, glowstone, and the coal, lapis, redstone, diamond, and emerald ores. Blocks of diamond, emerald, lapis, and amethyst also land here.
  • Feel: Slow but still bouncy, with medium air drag. It has the highest vertical launch power of any archetype.
  • Values: Knockback resistance 0.4, bounciness 0.6, friction 0.3, air drag 0.05, vertical launch power 0.24.
  • Water: Sinks.

Slow Flat (Medicine Ball)

  • Blocks: Blocks of iron, gold, copper (all oxidation stages, plus cut copper, chiseled copper, and copper bulbs), netherite, raw iron, raw gold, and raw copper, along with iron, gold, copper, and nether gold ore and ancient debris.
  • Feel: Slow, heavy, low bounce. Hit it and it thuds a short distance and stops.
  • Values: Knockback resistance 0.5, bounciness 0.4, friction 0.4, air drag 0.1.
  • Water: Sinks.

High Resistance

  • Blocks: Soul sand and soul soil.
  • Feel: Barely moves. Even a Knockback sword struggles to shift it. Think of it as a paperweight with a face.
  • Values: Knockback resistance 0.7, bounciness 0.2, friction 1.0, air drag 0.01.
  • Water: Sinks.

Sticky

  • Blocks: Honeycomb block only.
  • Feel: It launches fast off a hit but has zero bounce and extreme ground friction, so it slams down and sticks where it lands.
  • Values: Knockback resistance -2.0, bounciness 0.0, friction 2.0, air drag 0.01.
  • Water: Sinks.

Hot

  • Blocks: Magma block only.
  • Feel: Handles like the Regular archetype, but it burns anything that touches it for 1 HP every 0.5 seconds.
  • Values: Knockback resistance -1.0, bounciness 0.5, friction 0.3, air drag 0.1.
  • Water: Floats.

Explosive

  • Blocks: TNT only.
  • Feel: Regular-style movement with high air drag, plus a 6-second fuse once lit. It is a bomb you can dribble.
  • Values: Knockback resistance -1.0, bounciness 0.5, friction 0.3, air drag 0.3.
  • Water: Floats.

Small Sulfur Cube

  • Origin: Two appear whenever a large cube dies, unless it died in its own explosion. They never spawn naturally.
  • Limits: Cannot absorb blocks, cannot be bucketed, and drop nothing (not even experience) when killed.
  • Growth: Grows into a large cube in 20 minutes, faster with slimeballs, or never with a golden dandelion.

Spawning

Spawn Condition Details
Location Overworld, inside the sulfur caves biome only. Look for a sulfur spring on the surface: these rare pools of sulfur and magma mark a sulfur cave directly below.
Biomes Sulfur Caves. On rare occasions the biome breaks through to the surface, and sulfur cubes can appear there too.
Y-Level Range No fixed range. They spawn wherever the sulfur caves biome generates underground.
Light Level Any light level. Torching up the cave will not stop them.
Required Block No special block. Any valid spawning space inside the biome works.
Group Size Java: 2–4
Bedrock: 2–4
Weight Java: 100 out of 315 (a 31.75% share of Monster-category spawns in the biome)
Bedrock: 150
Edition Differences Spawn weights differ as shown above. In both editions, only large cubes spawn naturally, and they compete with hostile mobs such as cave spiders for Monster-category spawn space.

Interactions with Environment & Other Mobs

  • Mobs That Attack It: Zoglins, the wither, and wardens will attack a sulfur cube even while it holds a block. The warden’s melee does nothing to a filled cube, but its sonic boom can kill it.
  • Tamed Wolves: Your wolves will attack any sulfur cube you attack. Keep that in mind before a friendly soccer match with the dogs around.
  • Pufferfish: In Java Edition, sulfur cubes are on the not_scary_for_pufferfish tag, so pufferfish do not puff up at them.
  • Cave Spiders: Sulfur caves spawn cave spiders instead of regular spiders. It is the first place cave spiders spawn naturally outside of spawners, so cube hunting comes with poison.
  • Potent Sulfur Gas: Sulfur pools release a gas cloud at the water’s surface. Players and mobs entering nearby water get Nausea.
  • Geysers: Potent sulfur sitting above a magma block becomes a geyser that erupts roughly every 50 seconds, pushing entities above it upward for 4–5 seconds. A cube parked on top goes for a ride.
  • Explosion Chains: Any explosion near a TNT cube primes it with a short 0.75–2.2 second fuse, so a group of TNT cubes can chain-react like dominoes.
  • Hot Meets Explosive: A Hot cube that touches a TNT cube lights it. Store them apart unless you enjoy surprises.
  • Dispensers: A dispenser can fire a block into a cube whose hitbox overlaps the space directly in front of it, remove a block with shears, or release a cube from a Bucket of Sulfur Cube.
  • Redstone: A TNT cube is primed when the center of its hitbox sits where placed TNT would be powered. Oddly, it also primes when it shares a space with an active redstone component, such as a comparator, even if that space is not technically powered.

Drops & Loot

Item Quantity Chance Notes
Absorbed Block 1 Guaranteed (if the cube holds one) You get back exactly the block you fed it, including any custom anvil name. A TNT cube that explodes uses up its TNT, so nothing comes back.
Experience 1–2 Large cubes only Small cubes drop no experience.
Small Sulfur Cubes 2 Every large cube death Not an item, but the main thing a large cube “drops.” Skipped if the cube died in its own explosion.
Slimeballs 0 Never Unlike slimes, sulfur cubes drop no slimeballs. They eat them instead.

Player Uses & Farming

  • Minigames: This is the main event. Regular cubes make soccer balls, Fast Flat cubes make golf balls, Fast Sliding cubes on ice make hockey pucks, Slow Sliding cubes make curling stones, and Light cubes make beach balls for volleyball.
  • Mobile TNT: Feed a cube TNT, light it with flint and steel or a Fire Aspect weapon, then smack it toward your target. The 6-second fuse gives you time to line up the shot and, ideally, run.
  • Hazards and Mob Control: A Hot cube is a movable magma block. Use it for obstacle courses or to herd mobs, but keep it away from villagers and animals you care about.
  • Redstone Builds: Dispensers can load, unload, and deploy cubes. Redstone power primes TNT cubes, and High Resistance or Sticky cubes make solid stoppers at the end of a launch track.
  • Transport and Pets: Bucket a cube to carry it anywhere. Bucketed cubes never despawn and do not count toward the mob cap, which makes them the easiest way to keep one at your base.
  • Decoration: A cube holding a nice block is a living display case. Just remember that glowing blocks inside do not light the room.
  • Farming Reality Check: There is nothing worth farming. They drop 1–2 experience and no slimeballs, and they cannot breed. Killing large cubes and letting the small ones regrow will multiply your herd, but that is ranching for fun, not for loot.
  • Growing Your Herd: Name tag a large cube before killing it and both small cubes inherit the name, which keeps them from despawning. Feed them slimeballs to skip most of the 20-minute wait.
  • Edition Caveat: In Java Edition, packing too many cubes into one small pen triggers entity cramming damage, and a block inside will not save them. Give them room.

Commands & NBT

Summon a basic sulfur cube in either edition:

/summon minecraft:sulfur_cube ~ ~ ~

Java Edition: a named cube that never despawns:

/summon minecraft:sulfur_cube ~ ~ ~ {CustomName:"Kickabout",PersistenceRequired:1b}

Java Edition: a frozen, unkillable display cube:

/summon minecraft:sulfur_cube ~ ~ ~ {NoAI:1b,Invulnerable:1b,PersistenceRequired:1b}

Bedrock Edition: a named cube:

/summon minecraft:sulfur_cube "Kickabout" ~ ~ ~

Java Edition: inspect everything the nearest cube stores, which is the quickest way to find the current data keys:

/data get entity @n[type=minecraft:sulfur_cube]

Clear every sulfur cube in loaded chunks:

/kill @e[type=minecraft:sulfur_cube]
  • CustomName: Sets the cube’s name. A named large cube passes the name to both small cubes when it splits.
  • PersistenceRequired: Set to 1b to stop despawning.
  • NoAI: Set to 1b to freeze an empty cube in place.
  • Invulnerable: Set to 1b to block almost all damage.
  • Silent: Set to 1b to mute all of its squishing.
  • Absorbed block and growth data: Commands can load any block into a cube, even ones it would normally refuse. Mojang has not published the exact field names yet, so feed a cube in-game and run /data get to see the current keys before building commands around them.

Tags, Gamerules & Datapack Hooks

  • #minecraft:sulfur_cube_swallowable (Java item tag): Every item a large cube can absorb.
  • #minecraft:sulfur_cube_food (Java item tag): Every item that can be fed to a small cube.
  • #minecraft:sulfur_cube_archetype/<name> (Java item tags): Assigns blocks to archetypes. There are twelve: bouncy, regular, slow_flat, fast_flat, light, fast_sliding, slow_sliding, sticky, high_resistance, explosive, hot, and slow_bouncy.
  • #minecraft:sulfur_cube_archetype_<name> (Bedrock item tags): The Bedrock equivalents, using an underscore instead of a slash. In Bedrock, these tags alone decide what a cube can absorb.
  • #minecraft:sulfur_cube_with_block_immune_to (Java damage type tag): Every damage type a filled cube ignores.
  • #minecraft:not_scary_for_pufferfish (Java entity tag): Includes the sulfur cube.
  • Cube mob predicate: The slime entity sub-predicate type was renamed to cube_mob in 26.2 Snapshot 3, since it now covers slimes, magma cubes, and sulfur cubes.
  • Archetype definitions (Java data packs): Archetypes are data-driven. Optional fields include explosion (with a fuse time), contact_damage (with an amount), and knockback_modifiers (with horizontal_power and vertical_power).
  • Mob griefing: mob_griefing (Java) or mobgriefing (Bedrock) set to false stops cubes from picking up dropped blocks. Hand-feeding still works.
  • TNT explosions: TNT cubes respect tnt_explodes (Java) and tntexplodes (Bedrock). With it off, lit cubes will not detonate.
  • Entity cramming: max_entity_cramming (Java) controls how many cubes you can pack together before they start taking damage.

Difficulty & Edition Differences

  • Difficulty: The sulfur cube is passive on every difficulty. The only thing that scales is TNT cube explosion damage: up to 22.5 HP on Easy, 43 HP on Normal, and 64.5 HP on Hard.
  • Spawn Weight: 100 in Java versus 150 in Bedrock. Group size is 2–4 in both.
  • Launched Climbing: Only Java Edition lets launched, filled cubes climb ladders and vines.
  • Airborne Launches: Hitting a cube in midair sends it noticeably higher in Java Edition.
  • Entity Cramming: Filled cubes take cramming damage in Java Edition only.
  • Bucket Names: Java uses just the cube’s name. Bedrock uses “Bucket of [name]”.
  • Tags and Sounds: Java archetype tags use a slash (sulfur_cube_archetype/bouncy) while Bedrock uses an underscore (sulfur_cube_archetype_bouncy). Sound events use entity. in Java and mob. in Bedrock.

Sounds & Audio

  • Jump: entity.sulfur_cube.jump (Java), mob.sulfur_cube.jump (Bedrock)
  • Landing: entity.sulfur_cube.squish (Java), mob.sulfur_cube.landing (Bedrock)
  • Absorb Block: entity.sulfur_cube.absorb (Java), mob.sulfur_cube.absorb (Bedrock). The subtitle reads “Sulfur Cube full.”
  • Eject Block: entity.sulfur_cube.eject (Java), mob.sulfur_cube.eject (Bedrock)
  • Hurt: entity.sulfur_cube.hurt (Java), mob.sulfur_cube.hurt (Bedrock)
  • Death: entity.sulfur_cube.death (Java), mob.sulfur_cube.death (Bedrock)
  • Small Cube Sounds (Java): entity.small_sulfur_cube.jump, .squish, .hurt, .death, and .eat. The eating subtitle reads “Small Sulfur Cube puts on mass.”
  • Small Cube Sounds (Bedrock): mob.sulfur_cube.small.jump, .landing, .hurt, and .death. Eating uses the generic random.eat.
  • Ball Sounds (Java): Each archetype has its own kick and push sounds, following the pattern entity.sulfur_cube.<archetype>.hit and entity.sulfur_cube.<archetype>.push. A wooden ball, for example, uses entity.sulfur_cube.bouncy.hit.

History & Major Changes

  • March 2026: Announced at Minecraft Live alongside the Chaos Cubed drop and the sulfur caves biome.
  • Java 26.2-snapshot-1 (April 7, 2026): Added the sulfur cube, the Bucket of Sulfur Cube, and the spawn egg. It launched as a passive mob with 8 HP that spawns and despawns like a hostile mob.
  • Java 26.2 Snapshot 3 (April 14, 2026): The slime entity sub-predicate was renamed to cube_mob to include sulfur cubes.
  • Java 26.2 Snapshot 5 (April 28, 2026): Added the Explosive archetype. TNT cubes got a 6-second fuse when lit by fire or redstone and a randomized fuse when set off by other explosions.
  • Java 26.2 Snapshot 6 (May 5, 2026): Added the Slow Bouncy (stone) and Hot (magma) archetypes, the “Uh Oh” advancement, and new data pack fields for explosions, contact damage, and knockback modifiers.
  • Bedrock 26.20: Sulfur cubes available behind the experimental toggle.
  • Java 26.2 / Bedrock 26.30 (June 16, 2026): Full release as part of Chaos Cubed. The explosion-triggered fuse now sits at 15–44 ticks (0.75–2.2 seconds).

Notable Bugs & Quirks

  • Fake Lighting: Froglights, sea lanterns, and other light sources glow inside a cube but produce zero actual light. Your mob-proofing plan cannot rely on them.
  • Hidden Block Names: A cube can absorb a renamed block and keeps the name when you get it back, but the name never displays above the cube.
  • Comparator Priming: A TNT cube sharing a space with an active comparator gets primed even if that space is not technically powered.
  • Fire Resistance Does Not Help: A TNT cube with Fire Resistance still ignites the moment it takes fire damage.
  • Bucket Loophole: Bucketed cubes never despawn, but the small cubes they split into on death can.
  • Snapshot-Era Bugs: During 26.2 testing, players reported filled cubes shaking inside powder snow as if freezing (MC-307297) and small cubes appearing large on the client after being fed a slimeball (MC-307864). Check Mojira for their current status.

Advancements/Achievements

  • Uh Oh (Java, Husbandry): Have a sulfur cube absorb a block of TNT. The name says it all.
  • Bedrock Edition: No sulfur cube achievement has been documented at the time of writing. Check your in-game achievements list for updates.

Spin-offs, Culture & Trivia

  • Sports Nicknames: Several archetypes carry sports nicknames: football/soccer ball, rubber ball, golf ball, hockey puck, beach ball, medicine ball, and curling stone. Mojang clearly built this mob for backyard games.
  • Community Challenges: To celebrate the launch, Bedrock players were challenged to feed 10 million sulfur cubes TNT and to spawn 50 million sulfur cubes. Rewards included a Brawler Helmet and a Sulfur Cube Head for the Character Creator.
  • Add-Ons: Chaos Cubed: Pixel Party is a free official Marketplace add-on built around the drop, and the Chaos Cubed: Cursed Cube add-on was a community challenge reward.
  • Theme Music: The Chaos Cubed drop added the “Bounce” music disc by fingerspit. You find it in chest minecarts inside mineshafts that pass through sulfur caves.
